Re: the cat and cd commands

2010-08-17 Thread Barry Hadder
Hi Sarah,

First of all, if you are in your home directory you need to take the leading /
off the path. / is the root directory and I don't think that's where you have
your Pictures folder.

There are a couple of ways to get there:
cd Pictures/"iphone pics"
cd Pictures/iphone\ pics

The best way is to use tab completion. When working with files and directories
on the command line, tab completion is your friend. Just type enough of the
letters of the path and hit tab. You may have to repeat it several times for a
long path. Also, remember that it is case sensitive. the ~/Pictures starts
with a capital p.

Strictly speaking, unix is case sensitive. The file system that OS10 uses
isn't, but the tab complete is.

The command line has it's quarks and just takes a little practice. I think it
is worth it though.
Hope that helps.

I have no idea if this works with Leopard, but I use control-option-command-H
to navigate headers.

FYI, there's j for form fields, n for auto web spots, and l for links with

Re: NIKE+

I wonder if it is because I am using it on a EGS with iOS 4? What problems
have you experienced? Honestly I have not experienced anything so far. I tend
to start walking on the treadmill before I activate it and it then finds my
sensor every time. I set goals to walk 5 miles or burn 650 calories (via
custom option etc) and it all works great.

I would be interested to know what problems you are experiencing.

Re: webkit question

2010-08-17 Thread Justin Ekis
Actually, webkit remembers this setting after upgrading. You only have to
change that setting once. I install every new build and never have to redo this.

Speaking of upgrading every night, The only thing I would say about webkit is
that I would like to have an option to see a list of changes between each
build. I know that the list would be automatically generated from the log
messages that developers write when submitting changes. These would probably be
very technical messages, but even if I don't entirely understand what I'm
reading I could still guess whether a change might be very experimental in
nature. If it's a significant change I might hold off on upgrading for a few
days in case there are bugs. Likewise, if I see an accessibility fix mentioned,
that's an immediate upgrade in my book.

Re: Using a Mac Mini without a monitor

Buyer is responsible for packaging and shipping costs though. On Fri, 16

I had written up a lot of detail on this some time back which you can find in
the mail archives. Short version is that in the most recent minis they now
bog down unless a monitor is detected. The cheap fix used to be to get a mini
to NTSC/PAL adaptor which made the mini think it was hooked up to something,
but the analog stuff has been dropped from the modern minis. I was able to
work around this by getting a DVI->VGA adapter and a VGA->NTSC adapter.
Worked out well since we did want it hooked up to the TV anyway so the kids
can get their Elmo fix. The detect is actually done by sending signals down
certain pins and getting something back on other pins. With nothing hooked up
this detection fails and weird stuff starts happening. A cheap used VGA
display is probably the cheapest solution. They used to sell VGA terminators
but every place I found on the web had them discontinued. There are tutorials
out there on how to make your own if you know somebody who is good with a
soldering iron. I think these might be the right things for $33, which is
really steep for what should be a $5 plug.

 Please, spare us this!

While I think it would be nice if the mini worked without a monitor,
 please,
don't give us this stuff about being forced to buy something you don't
 need.
Personally, I have a vary old monitor which I keep around just in case I
 get
in to trouble where sighted assistance is necessary. I am sure that most
 of
us who came from windows know that does happen from time to time to even
 the
best of us. So, even though I have never yet had a problem on the mac
 where
sighted assistance was definitely necessary, I have learned that having a
vary inexpensive monitor around is a good idea regardless.

You can buy a used 1 for $50 or less, especially an old 15 inch LCD or
 something like that.

On my mini, I have found that any old monitor would solve the problem and
didn't even have to be turned on. So, I hope we don't go off on the whole
needing a monitor thing, because, it's really trivial!

Re: webkit question

2010-08-17 Thread Esther

Hi Caroly, Chad, and Others,

Blake Sinnett answered this question last month, but to repeat instructions for
how to get back your own home page:

1. Open Terminal (e.g., from Finder, press Command-Shift-U to go to your Utilities
folder, press "T" to select terminal, and press Command-Down Arrow to open the
application).

2. Type or paste in the following line in terminal:
defaults write org.webkit.nightly.WebKit StartPageDisabled -bool YES
and then press return.

3, Relaunch webkit. Your regular home page should appear.  You can also quit
terminal, since you no longer need it.

You only need to go through this once, unless you regularly download new
versions of Webkit.

Has to buy the sensor for 19.99.

And I don't work on this anymore, at least not as the global director.

Hi All,

Since going blind recently, I invested in a treadmill to keep the pounds
off. Obviously if you can't see, the display on the treadmill is not much
use. So I activated the Nike+ app built into the iPhone and from what I can
tell it seems very accessible.

The thing is, I will now have to go out and get the sneakers(trainers) and
Nike+ sensor for it all to work. Does anyone have any experience of the
Nike+ kit etc and is it worth it? Should I just look at something like
iTreadmill, how do they compare?

Chris

says google wehn I arrow to it. IF yours doesn't, it probably still is the

reading down a table column when on the web

2010-08-17 Thread Mary Otten
This is probably easy and I'm overlooking something very obvious. I have not
been able to figure out how to read straight down a column within a table o the
web. If I interact with the table and arrow down, I would expect to be able to
go down the column I'm in. But whether with numpad or regular arrow keys, that
doesn't happen. I turned quick nav off and then moving the regular arrows
doesn't do anything, which, I suppose, is what I suspected would happen.
Surely, there must be a way to do this.

Re: Great workaround for Mac Laptops who want a Control ke ont he right side

2010-08-17 Thread Alfredo
Its good that some of you like my idea. Carolyn, it is easy to setup
just go tot he Keyboard preferences of system preferences, make the
keyboard the selected tab by pressing the spacebar on it. Then arrow
right to Keyboard modifier and you will have a list of keys you can
modify on the left side, and a pop up button for each key on the right
hand you can just spacebar and change the key to do what you want. If
you need further help my tutorial will have step by step instructions
on how to do this but it will come in like 2 weeks.

RE: replying to facebook messages directly from mail?

2010-08-17 Thread Dave Taylor
It is possible to reply to comments on your status, wall posts etc, but not
to inbox messages. You can receive emails to which you can reply on other
people’s comments once you have commented on a status. Your other option is
to set up text messaging. With texts, you can reply to inbox messages,
accept or ignore friend requests and post comments. If you reply to a
comment by text, it now seems to send a message rather than post to the
thread. Alternatively m.facebook.com is very easy to use and takes hardly
any browsing, and in some third world countries you can use 0.facebook.com

Here is the excerpt from slashdot

http://yro.slashdot.org/story/10/08/17/0138259/Legislation-To-Make-Web-Devices-Accessible-To-Disabled-Users?from=rss

This could be used as a fairly heavy argument for adobe to get on the
bandwagon, starting with that damn flash

As a side note, i tried adobe photoshop express and its accessible. Thats
because they coded it with xcode i guess.
