Re: organizing bookmarks
Hi Matthew, Collections refer to special categories of items under the Bookmarks menu, such as "History", the "Bookmarks Bar" (i.e. the most frequently used bookmark entries that appear on the browser page when the Bookmarks Bar is not hidden), the "Bookmarks Menu" (usually, the list of bookmarks not on your Bookmarks Bar), the "Address Book" (for URLs of contacts in your Address Book), "RSS Feeds", if you choose to subscribe to them and have them displayed in Safari. So the table of "Collections" in the "Show All Bookmarks" page of Safari displays these items as well as folders of bookmarks. When you use the "Create new Collection" button you create a folder under the table listing both the categories I listed, and folders of Bookmarks. If you select a category under the table of bookmark collections (whether "History" or a particular bookmarks folder), then stop interacting with the table and navigate to the table of items under that selected collection (e.g. with Command-Shift-T to move to the next table) you can see both individual bookmarks and (sub)folders of bookmarks. The "Create new Collection" button creates a new folder of bookmarks under the Table of Collections. The "Create new Folder" button creates a new folder within the collections you have selected in the Table of Collections -- this could be a sub-folder of a bookmarks folder, or a folder on your Bookmarks Bar, for example. Also, to answer Laura's original question about reordering bookmarks, I find this easiest to do using Safari on the iPad (or iPhone), where after double-tapping the "Bookmarks" button, I can double tap the "Edit" button. either on the top level, where the items are folders, or after selecting a collection like the "Bookmarks Bar" or "Bookmarks Menu". For folders or bookmarks in my synced bookmarks this brings us a "delete" button beside the listed entry on the left side of the screen and a "Reorder . draggable" button on the right side of the screen for the listed folder. Doing a double tap and hold pass through gesture on this button lets me rearrange the order by drag and drop, and produces the burbling noise that the gesture was recognized. As I move my finger up or down the right side of the iPhone screen, I'll hear a "clink" and an announcement like "moved above" (or "moved below"), (and then the name of the bookmark or folder that I just move past in the up or down direction). To check the ordering of the items, just move your finger down the center of the iPhone screen, and scroll (three finger flick up) when you reach the bottom to keep going. Or, you could just flick right or do a "read all" from the current point (two finger flick down), but you'll also hear the delete buttons at the left and the move buttons at the right also listed, in addition to the name of the bookmark. When things are ordered to your satisfaction, double tap the "Done button". I think these will sync back to your Safari bookmarks on the Mac -- at least, this does through MobileMe, and I believe this also works when you sync through connecting your iPhone to iTunes if you have the box for syncing bookmarks checked. (Someone please check me on this.) HTH.
