Re: MI-L mobile system reccomendations

2003-05-30 Thread Karl Kliparchuk
Hi. Another Aussie built software is Discover Mobile by ENCOM. It has
been very well received here in Canada to companies that I have shown it
to. www.encom.com.au is their website. We also have some info on our
website, www.mcelhanney.com under Software > Discover.

hiya,

i want to put together a mobile mapping system for some nighttime
shooters
in outback australia and want to see what ideas people here have for
the
project.

the budget will be between $1000-$2000 Australian. (approx 20 bucks
US)

there's no specific requirements yet, so it could be an all-in-one GPS,
or a
combination of PDA/small laptop and GPS etc.

general requirements:

ease of use:
end-user will NOT be interested in programming and fancy stuff, just
knowing
where he is, and some basic plotting and editing. eg, adding fence
lines
and tracks and gates and such, or noting locations of dams and sheds
or
hazards, and perhaps other things such as downed game.

low to medium accuracy:
it's in the outback, they only need to know where they are to within a
few
hundred metres most of the time, but there will nearly always be easy
line
of sight to a whole hemisphere of satellites.

reliability:
this system will be on all night every night. don't want to have to
keep
changing or charging batteries, it should run off the car battery.
the
end-user will not likely suffer down-time, they would rather not use it
if
it requires too much effort to maintain.

robustness:
this system will be in a bumpy car all the time, so it is a definite
requirement that it is NOT delicate. any connections must be solid,
capable
of taking decent knocks.

other ideas:
would like to interface with thermal sensing/night vision equipment.
eg,
rather than shooter having to drive around paddocks at 20km/h for 8
hours
spotlighting for game, it would be nice if they could drive at normal
speeds
with a thermal overlay on the map which indicated heat zones. i know
next
to nothing about this side of things, but if anyone has any ideas i
would
love to hear them.

this system will be within a darkened cabin environment, so requires
easy
access buttons and highly visible display with at-a-glance
operability.
minimal user interaction should be required for it's main functions.
would
also be nice if data were easily transferred to a home computer for a
possible database and for sharing of mapping information with other
users,
and for easy updates to the system for some custom tools etc.

if there is such a system out-of-the-box, then that's great. however
i'm
not scared of putting this together myself. i can do integrated
mapping and
programming and stuff myself, and i won't have any major difficulty
learning
new systems/languages.

anyway, an intermediate system will be good for the short term,
something
that does MOST of the mapping stuff easily, so these guys will be happy
with
a mid-range GPS or something in the mean time while i make a fully
featured
system.

answers to the ideas i've posted will be much appreciated, and i'd love
to
hear any other ideas that would be applicable to such a system.

thanks

ash

MI-L XP Home Edition and MI Pro v7?

2003-03-27 Thread Karl Kliparchuk
Hi. Does anyone have any experience running MI Pro v7 on XP Home
Edition? I have a client that has a Compaq 2GHz laptop with 512 MB of
RAM. He is saying that it is taking over a minute before the MapInfo
splash screen comes on. Also he has some large workspaces, e.g. 400MB,
that take 5-10 minutes to load. He previously had a 400MHz laptop
running Win98 and the same workspaces opened up in less than 1 minute.
Does anyone know if XP Home Edition could be the problem? Thanks in
advance for your replies.

RE: MI-L Orthophoto Format

2002-12-03 Thread Karl Kliparchuk
I agree that ECW is a very good format and allows for fast loading in
MapInfo Pro. MapInfo Pro can read ECW files so you don't need to buy a
plug-in. There is also a free ECW compressor you can download from
www.ermapper.com that allows you to compress images, e.g. TIFF files,
that are 500MB or less into an ECW format. We provide orthophotos in
ECW format to clients here in BC, along with MrSID or TIFF format. ECW
and MrSID are becoming more popular with end-users.

Hi Andre,

Our MapInfo clientele tend to enjoy working with our photography in
.ecw
format. They can pull up an entire market in one seamless image
without
having to "cut" an image for a specific area, zoom in to the maximum
resolution on the fly, and MapInfo redraws much faster while
panning/zooming
with .ecw, than say a GeoTiff (which can become very large in size.)
I
don't mean to plug our product here, but our software also allows users
to
export GeoTiffs from the photography for prints (which is a less
memory
intensive way to plot large areas than printing from .ecw.)

I hope this helps you,

Ryan Morgan

Hello everyone,

We are soon to acquire new orthophotos. What format works best in
MapInfo?
We also use Geomedia Pro in our organization and it had been suggested
that
we go with GeoTiff because hard drive space is cheap, although they
suggest
a compressed format if the orthos are to be used over a network
system.

Any Suggestions?

Re: MI-L Raster Images

2002-11-25 Thread Karl Kliparchuk
Peter. I would recommend compressing the images. You can use the free
ECW compressor from Earth Resource Mapping to do this, just as long as
each image is less than 500 MB. Go to www.ermapper.com to get the
compressor.

Hi Listers,

Here in St Helena we are using MapInfo to record our line plant data.
The map base presently consists of 8 jpeg files that I created by
cutting a 25000 scale map into A4 size pieces and scanning them on a
small scanner. The file size is around 1.5Mb each. These images were
then registered in MI 7.0. Some inaccuracies exist in the registration.

I have ordered from Ordnance Survey a full set of scanned maps of
various scales (eleven in all). These have yet to arrive but I expect
that the file sizes are going to be very large. What is the best way to
deal with this? Divide the files into smaller areas and maybe put up
with small register inaccuracies or use the large file and expect slow
redraw times and hogging of memory?

Grateful for any comments.

Peter.

RE: MI-L digitised lines that jump

2002-10-02 Thread Karl Kliparchuk

One should consider that an image has a fixed resolution. You have
perfect alignment between image and vectors when you are at 100% zoom,
so that you are seeing every pixel along a line in the image. When you
zoom in or out of the image, you are either dropping some pixels in the
image or oversampling. You don't have control over which pixel is shown
and which is not shown when you zoom out for example, so it can appear
that your linework is shifting. For shifts greater than a few pixels,
I have seen that sometimes people have two raster images that have
slightly different registration accuracies. MapInfo has to use one of
the registrations to control the map window, so vectors over that image
should not shift much, but the vectors in the other image (including the
other image) could shift significantly.

Hope this helps.

It seems to be a fairly common problem and one which I have to live
with. I
do however accept that there has to be a "fudge factor" when carrying
out an
excercise like this. A variation of 1 or 2 pixels visually not really
and
issue, but also the lines would be in the right place even though the
raster
is slightly off. (You could never achieve a perfectly registered
raster
tile). If all lines shift by the same amount then they will be relative
to
each other, therefore the distances and relationships would be the
same. If
these are to be produced in a map format what scale is it being shown
at? A
scale of 1:10K will have a bigger error then a scale of 1:50K. Also it
should be worth accepting that the original base data from the OS or
whoever
is flawed as well. So you could be stuck with gaining a truely
inaccurate
answer.
But for a comparison of maps over a period of time it could offer a
solution.

MI-L mapinfo serial numbers

2002-06-18 Thread Karl Kliparchuk

Hi All.

Just a note of information to people upgrading their copies of MapInfo
Pro to the new version. The new version uses a different serial number
from previous versions, at least here in North America. The new serial
number is stuck to the bottom of the MapInfo box. I hope this saves
people a bunch of anxiety and phone calls.

Karl :-)

RE: MI-L Arcinfo table

2002-06-06 Thread Karl Kliparchuk

That's one of the pitfalls I see with the Geodatabase concept. It is harder to share
your data with other clients, unless you export out Shape files, and then you lose the
business logic that is bound up with the spatial data.

Karl

>>> "Stokes, Jonathan (J)" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> 06/06/02 08:46AM >>>
JC
It sounds horribly like you have an ArcGIS Geodatabase. What ArcGIS (or
ArcInfo/ArcView 8.0) allows you to do is store geometry in databases either
as a enterprise geodatabase (i.e. in something like SQL server/Oracle/DB2)
or as a personal geodatabase which uses the Access 2000 format.

I would guess the only way you could do it would be to pass it back to the
supplier and ask them to export the data as a shape file. Or you could go
and have a look at www.safe.com and a product called
FME (which is the basis for the universal translator in MapInfo) and see if
that will do the trick (there is a 30 day free download eval copy on the
website which may well be useful).
Hope this helps

 Dear List
I've an arcinfo table that I need to open to extract the data
without using the actual application. The arcinfo file is in an .mdb
format. Access doesn't open the table. I was wondering if it is possible
to open this file directly into MI. All help is gratefully received.
Kind regards.

MI-L refresh too often?

2002-06-05 Thread Karl Kliparchuk

A client of mine is running MI Pro v6.5 on a Windows 2000 PC. Whenever she clicks on

refreshes before she can use the tool. Has anyone seen this problem and is there a
solution? Thx in advance.

Re: MI-L Offset Line

2002-06-05 Thread Karl Kliparchuk

Hi Ben,

Discover can do this. It has lots of useful tools in it besides feature offset. Here
is a description of how the feature offset works.

You can create multiple copies of a selected object at nominated offsets in the x and
y directions. The selected object can be of any type. Attributes can be copied from
the "seed" object to the offset objects. Up to 10,000 objects offset from the
selected object by specific distances in the x and y directions can be created. You
enter x and y offsets (positive values are up and to the right, negative values are
down and to the left) and the number of objects to create in the x and y directions
(up to 100 in each direction).

If you would like to know more about Discover please contact me, or check
http://www.mcelhanney.com/software/sw_discover.html

MI-L Replies to MIG export

I received a couple of suggestions to this. The first was to use the free Grid

ascii x/y/z but is not free. it does have a 15 day eval though.

We constantly have issues with our HP2500. For instance, the first time you
create a layout and send it to print, it comes out monochrome. We've found
you have to save the Workspace, close out mapinfo, reopen the wkspce and
then print. Sometimes we have to do this a couple of times for it to work.
There have been inumerable other problems over the last few years.

Subject: MI-L Plotter durability and maintenance agreements

Hi,

Our HP 2500 cp plotter appears to suffer from a slow but increasingly
"congestive" CPU and/or other electronic failure.

My question to the fellow MI users is how many of you have purchased annual
maintenance agreements for this machine vs. those that have not? HP wants
about $1600.00 - $1900.00 to just take a look at what might be the problem,
which coincides with the cost of annual maintenance (ofcourse). I am up and
running now for about 4.5 years which equals in maintenance about the cost
of a new plotter.

My impression has always been that HP plotters are virtually indestructible
and go forever?

How long have some of you been able to run trouble free with the HP
plotters?. I still have a 650 that runs like a champ after almost ten years
and many miles of paper!

I appreciate your input.

MI-L Plotting problem summary

2002-04-30 Thread Karl Kliparchuk

Hi and thanks to everyone that responded. There were various suggestions as to
solutions and/or why the problem was occuring. The responses were:

- A problem with XP that was solved by going back to Win98.
- dirty print heads needing to be cleaned
- outdated printer driver
- needing to change printer settings to ECP from EPP

For my client the answer was update the printer driver. That being said, one should
note that in the same printer driver there are many settings that you can modify, so
eventhough you have the most up-to-date driver, you still may have to change some
settings in the printer driver.

was wondering if anyone can give me any leads as to where I can purchase
orthophotos for areas across Canada that are ready to import into MapInfo?
I'm interested in 1:50 000 scale or larger. Which formats are available
and which would be best suited to use with MapInfo?

If orthopotos are not available how much work is it to import airphotos?
Natural Resources Canada has a library of airphotos which are available as
TIF images but they not georeferenced. What are the steps to bring those
airphotos into MapInfo? Should they be rectified using special software
before importing into MapInfo? If so can anyone recommend any good
programs for rectifying airphotos? And how or where can I get control
points for each airphoto so that they can be rectified?

Re: MI-L Vertical Mapper and MapInfo

2002-02-15 Thread Karl Kliparchuk

Ron.

There are a few things that you can do.

1. Run a thematic map. You would need to build an expression, e.g. Height \ 5 = 0.
You will get True for index contours and False for intermediate. You can then
thematically colour the 2 classes.

2. Add an index contour column to your contour table, then using Table> Update column
use the above expression to fill in trues and false. You can then run a thematic map.

3. Use the Query tool and run the above expression to select all index contours then
save them as a new table.

I hope that helps.

maybe there is a Plugin or an application out there which can read the world

job of georeferencing.

Re: MI-L MapInfo and Aerial Images

2001-12-20 Thread Karl Kliparchuk

Hi Jim,

You are going to need to go with option 2, as these things you require are not trivial
to do. I'm a bit biased toward ER Mapper as I use it and sell it, but it is really
powerful software. I promised myself not to work with software that I don't like. ER
Mapper has many wizards to help you through various processes. It also has ECW image
compression, which is similar to MrSID compression, but has been reviewed in various
geomatics magazines as being better. As scanned airphotos can take up a significant
amount of hard disk space, I would recommend compressing them after processing them.
BTW, MapInfo Pro can display ECW files. I hope this info helps.

Hi all,
I'm looking to georeference, orthorectify and perform some image analysis on
multi-spectral aerial photos. I want to end up with a georeferenced,
orthorectify, NDVI image that I can import into MapInfo. I already have the
sights mapped in MapInfo and I was wondering how others on the list managed
this. As I see it I have 2 options:
  1..An add-in (like VM?)
2.. A separate program in which I can process the images and then
translate the georeferenced and orthorectify images into MapInfo.
I have not found anything like option 1 but in option 2 I have looked at
ER Mapper, Idrisi, ENVI , CHIPS and others.

Could anyone offer some advice / opinions/ comments please?

Thanks again all,

Jim

Re: MI-L Albers projection for Canada

2001-11-20 Thread Karl Kliparchuk

Hi all. Just a follow up as I have received a few replies with the BC Albers
projection. This is a projection specific to the province of BC. I am expecting the
central meridian for Albers for Canada to be something like -90 degrees longitude. I
also expect the false easting and northing to be different from the BC Albers.

MI-L OS differences?

2001-10-17 Thread Karl Kliparchuk

Hi all.

I have a client that has different Win operating systems and he gets different results
when plotting and using large raster files. Can anyone shed any light on the
following questions?

Why can you not plot anything over 28000 pixels in Mapinfo Pro for NT, 2000 but
there was a much larger limit in the
Win 98 version? Why are there differences in colours and patterns when plotting
form Win 98 and NT, 2000?

Thanks for your advice.

MI-L spooling question

2001-09-26 Thread Karl Kliparchuk

Hi all.

I have a client that has MI Pro v6.5. This version appears to want to print directly
to the printer and not to the spooler (hence jamming up their system while the
printing is in progress). Other software go to the spooler, so the spooler appears
to
be working. Does anyone know how to force MI Pro v6.5 to send prints through the
spooler?

Thanks for your advice.

RE: MI-L plotter question

2001-08-22 Thread Karl Kliparchuk

You should consider the difference between a plotter and a printer. The 2500 is a
printer. A 450 on the other hand is a plotter. A plotter plots linework precisely on
the paper. It is not meant for colour images/photos. If precision placement of lines
is important to you, e.g. you are a surveyor, then you need a plotter. A printer,
like the 2500, does not have as high printing accuracy. It is used for plotting nice,
full colour images, but you would not make measurements off of the plots from the 2500.

Just some info.

We had the HP 2500 and recently upgraded to the 5000PS. The differences?
The print quality is significantly better, more ram, and it is lightening
fast!!! Processes and prints document so quick! Documents that used to
take an hour (spooling + printing), now takes 10 minutes. Seriously, it's
great.

It's pretty hard to go wrong with an HP750C loaded up with the maximum
onboard memory. The only reason I can see for needing the fancier models is
if you're in a production situation with dozens of maps to produce every
day.

MI-L bordering polygons question

2001-08-07 Thread Karl Kliparchuk

Hi everybody,

Is there an MBX around or some (semi-)automated way to locate all the adjacent
polygons to a target polygon? I know how to do an SQL Select for one polygon, but is
there a way of doing the same query for all polygons? A concrete example of what I
want would be to produce a list of all states that are adjacent to a state? As each
state has a different number of bordering states, you would end up with a list where
each row would be the target state, followed by a list of all the bordering states.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,
Karl Kliparchuk

MI-L graphs not found?

2001-07-30 Thread Karl Kliparchuk

Hi All.

Has anyone experienced this problem with a MI Pro v6.5 upgrade? When I select Window
> New Graph Window, I get the message:

No Graph Tables Found. Please Check Graph Support Files directory preference.

When I check Options > Preferences, I see the path pointing to the graph templates.
The path is not in the same path as the new version of MI Pro v6.5 though. The files
do exist as I checked them through Windows Explorer. The path is to the old directory
of MapInfo Pro.

I tried copying the entire graph directory into the new version of MI Pro and setting
the path under preferences. So it currently points to \program
files\MapInfo\Professional 6.5\graphsupport\templates, but it still does not work.

Has anyone else tried out the graphing from an upgrade, and had this problem? Hope
you have a solution :-)

Thanks in advance for your replies.

MI-L NAD27 / 83 shifting from DLGs

2001-06-13 Thread Karl Kliparchuk

Hi,

I have a client that has a DLG of an area in the US. The map is UTM, NAD27 originally
and is in the center of a UTM zone so it does not cross a zone boundary. The client
has saved a copy of the NAD27 data as NAD83. When he overlays the NAD83 data on NAD27
data at a small scale (e.g. < 1:5) everything lines up perfectly. When he zooms
out so the scale is > 1:5, the NAD83 data shifts north about 200 m. Has anyone
else ever seen this problem. My client is using MI Pro v6.0 and has tried this on
Windows NT and Windows 98.

Thanks in advance for your replies.

MI-L Point moving incorrectly

2001-02-05 Thread Karl Kliparchuk

Hi,

I have two different clients that have reported the same bug to me, so I am wondering
if others have seen this bug as well. Both clients have their tables in the UTM map
projection. They sometimes need to move a point feature to a specific
Easting/Northing location. They double click on a point feature in an editable layer,
then type in the coordinates and press the OK button. When they do that, the point
disappears from the screen. When you zoom out, you find that the point has moved to a
location with different coordinates than that which you typed. It usually goes
somewhere around the equator. Has anyone else seen this problem? I have been told
that v5.0 of MapInfo did not have this problem. V5.5 and v6.0 has this problem also.
