MD: Midiman C03

2000-01-12 Thread Shawn Chesley

penulti-
>>mate, and that's the way it's designed to work, so no matter what the
SCMS
>>setting of the input, the recording is always SCMS-final, but there

The C03 has an scms button that selects from four options. The are as
follows:

1. SCMS "Pass-Thru" Mode:
This mode merely passes all SCMS information received at the input source
to the output sources with no modification.
2. SCMS "None" Mode:
When SCMS mode is set to None, the outgoing SCMS bits are set to indicate
that there is no copy protection asserted (the material may be copied). If
the source is coaxial or optical S/PDIF, then the CO3 actually strips the
SCMS material out of the incoming stream and replaces it with bits that
indicate no copy protection.
3. SCMS "original" Mode:
When SCMS mode is set to Original, the outgoing SCMS bits are set to
indicate that the source material is the original material and not a copy.
Therefore, most receiving units will accept this material
4. SCMS "1st Generation" Mode:
When SCMS mode is set to 1st Generation, the outgoing SCMS bits are set to
indicate that the source material is a copy. Therefore, receiving units
that include SCMS will not accept this material - this can be useful for
protecting the copyright of commercial material.

All of the above was taken from the owners manual of the CO3.

>>Can you turn the stripping off, so that an SCMS-unlimited signal passes
through unmolested?

So, yes you can turn the stripping off so that it will pass an
SCMS-unlimited signal. I tested this, and it works with my unit. However,
the other three modes all function identically, as if the unit were in
"Original" mode.

Thanks for any and all help that can be offered. Iam particularly
interested in those of you who have a CO3 that works correctly, and what
the rest of your system is.
Thanks again,
Shawn

Maybe it was more a case of making you an offer you couldn't accept; perhaps
it is Japanese etiquette that a person should not say no to an offer but
rather imply refusal by coaxing the other party to withdraw it, and such an
indirect, roundabout procedure sounds pointless to us Occidentals, but that
was their way of saying they weren't interested?

Then again it might not have anything to do with Japanese practices but just
be the Sony way. I can think of at least one American company that does the
same thing.

Ok I have Easy CD Creater ver 3.01a. I have the Ricoh 6200S SCSI CD
Writer.

I see in the Easy CD Disc Properties that it does have 'Disc at Once' set
to Yes. I can't find any place to specify the gap time between spaces.
Does anyone know if this version of Easy CD Creater supports this gap?

That doesn't surprise me at all. I wrote to Sony telling them of my plans

I'll really get on their tits when they find out I'm putting the plans and
software on my web site for free download! (Coming soon, not yet though
because I'm drawing the circuit up nice and neet and taking bugs out of the
software. For all those that have asked previously - yes there will be a
WinAmp plug-in to handle titling from MP3).

Well, being an R50 owner and user, I'm a bit biased towards getting that one.
Is the one you're looking at new or used? If it's new, grab it and don't even
dare to have a second thought. If you're picking it up second hand I'd be
a bit leary, just because it is portable and a great workhorse, how much life
may be left in it, and how it was treated up till now. Though I have nothing
against the 821, I don't think it would be a mistake to grab the R50 while
you can.

MD: Midiman CO3

2000-01-12 Thread Shawn Chesley

Does anyone on this list use a midiman c03 stripper/ converter? I
recently purchased one, and have been having nothing but trouble with it.
The SCMS stripping feature does NOT do its thing. It will allow me to
record from any digital source, but refuses to make an scms unlimited
recording. Is anyone else having these problems? I sent the unit in for
repairs, but it was sent back and I was told it was fine. I was told it
must be my other equipment. Trouble is, I have very common equipment. A
Sony JB920 and a Sharp 722. I know that the 920 and 722 will write an
unlimited code. I have done this with several phish trees that were
originally from an scms unlimited DAT. When I put the co3 back in the
chain, these discs become hindered by scms. When the co3 is not in the
chain everything is peachy. Anyhow, if anyone has similar problems, please
let me know. I still think the unit is not functioning properly, or It was
never able to strip SCMS in the first place. Should I return it to midiman
again, or get a refund?
Thanks,
Shawn

There have been, however, known issues with ECDC 3.x that in DAO mode, it
still inserted anomalies between tracks. I've never noticed it personally,
because I've always used CDRwin and CD Wave to actually create the track
marks/cue sheet for CDRwin.

Absolute perfection every time.

RE: MD: Gapless CD Audio Track Playback

2000-01-12 Thread Tony Antoniou

For gapless audio CD's with tracks, you need to burn in Disc-at-Once mode as
most CD-R's support (including all recent CD-R's).

So check through your burn properties, depending on what program you use,
and ensure that it burns in DAO mode rather than TAO (Track-at-Once).

It has nothing to do with sample sizes and all that bullshit.

Sort of an off topic question. I have been archiving concerts to
MD for 2 years. I have been trying to put these live concerts on
CD and have experienced the following problem.

When I transfer the track to the computer HD, then burn the CD, when
you play the audio CD back, there is always a 2 or 3 second
'countdown' before the actual track starts playing. This creates a
problem when trying to divide a song into multiple tracks.

I seem to recall that someone a month or so ago mentioned that the
problem was due to the number of samples that are in the track. If
the track had an even multiple of some sample size, then there would
be no 'countdown' when the CD audio is played.

Am I remembering this correctly? If so, what is the magic sample
number that I need in order to get smooth 'gapless' CD audio tracks.
