RE: MD: Hercules Game Theater XP

2001-10-13 Thread Aileen Chen

I happen to have one; the card itself does not have a TOSLink or anything
digital, but it does come with a nifty external box full of different ports.
There is a proprietary connector between the card and the rack. A quick
glance at the box shows that I do have a TOSlink/Optical connection for both
in and out, I also have 4 extra USB ports, Mic port, headphone port, and
Midi i/o. I remember being a little surprised at seeing both optical i/o
because most MD decks don't even have them.

RE: MD: Sound card with Optical in/out

2001-10-11 Thread Aileen Chen

I just bought a Hercules Game Theater XP. It has TOSlink ins and outs. :)
Excellent deal. Easy setup, also a 5.1 sound card with oodles of other
goodies.

I got it from www.newegg.com. It was 139 shipped. :)

I don't know if anybody else posted this, but it's a great card. It's
supposed to rival any Sound Blaster card. Haven't used it to record
anything, but it seems easy enough.

RE: MD: Firewire?

2001-05-10 Thread Aileen Chen

Firewire in a nutshell, is much like a USB port, only it runs a LOT faster.
In some cases it runs faster than a SCSI-device. You don't see it
everywhere yet, because it's new technology (fairly) and not widely accepted
yet. FireWire is also hot-swappable.

You can find FireWire harddrives, CD-burners, and digital cameras, etc

MD: macs vs pcs.

2001-05-10 Thread Aileen Chen

I don't know if anybody replied to this, yet (I didn't notice in time about
the iMac comment) but I think Apple's customer service sucks all 'round, no
matter what sized customer they're serving.

And in response to the "overpriced" comments... I agree with the user who
swapped out the hd and stuck in more ram on their powerbook. it is possible
to create a powerful machine without "over"spending. most of the parts on
the newer G4s are also PC compatible. The ram, PC-100, and the HDs (the two
biggest components on a PC) can easily be replaced with parts found on a PC.

And also in response to the useability issue. I think for a home user, and
a small biz, a Mac is in every way viable, if not, better because of the
ease-of-use factor. Word Processing... Internet...Email...MP3s...They all
have good, if not better, programs out there for Mac users. In terms of
graphics, macs are up there as well, with Photoshop, Illustrator,
Dreamweaver.. these professional programs are also available for the Mac.

Now, for Large, corporations it is harder, because a large portion of the
database programs are PC-only, so that makes it very ;) hard to use a Mac.
Programming in C++ or Java. I now prefer the PC environment for programming,
but that's not to say I've never programmed on a Mac. The mac programs may
be harder to come by, but that doesn't make them worse than PCs.

And in relation to MD... I liked the mac for analog transfers more at first
because the speaker/headphone port on my iMac was so much easier to get to
than the back of my tower. Though, now that I have the aureal vortex card
with a TOSLink i think I'm going to like my PC more for transferring music.

Right now apple is selling the lowest end iMac for 900 USD. (www.apple.com)
Their low end iMac comes with a g3 CPU running at 400 mHz and is Indigo
colored.
And also comes with 2 USB ports and 2 FireWire ports. Which, IMO, makes it a
good cheap DV Editing computer. Most low-end PCs do not come with a
FireWire card. Heck, most computers in general don't come with one.
(Excluding Sony and their i.Link)

Aileen

Well the wierd thing here is that you must have been buying these G3s when
they were rather old because there has never been a G3 with a list price of
less than $1000 US from Apple, this price would have had to have been from a
retailer with a good mark down sale.

One little catch: the asking price is, erm, _slightly_ higher than the
usual price for that particular model. Specifically, they're asking
$1349.99 USD. But hey, you get all your money back, right? :)

I sure hope they throw in a few extras for that price, like a few blanks or

MD: Sony MD-X5: Any good?

2000-12-11 Thread Aileen Chen

Hi all,

i am going to be getting a new shelf system for christmas, and i was looking
at the sony md-x5...does anybody have any praises or gripes about the
system? i heard it in the store...the sound seems kind of weak, but i
happen to like the built-in MD recorder/player.

While I'm on that subject.. is it better to have a separate deck or to have
an integrated system? All I do is copy cds to md, and i occasionally dump
mp3s onto md (though I'm considering getting a portable to do the mp3->md).
i already have a je-320 and i was considering just buying a shelf system
with an optical digital out so that i could do transfers and such...but the
MD-X5 is so much cheaper and seems like a good idea... =)

Does anybody have any recommendations about this subject at all? :) Please
let me know or point me to someplace that can help me out.

Thanks a bunch (and in advance),
Aileen

Man, what's with the random swearing? I dunno about you, but all that just
gets annoying after a while.

P.S. I agree with what he said, minus all the cussing.

MD: bad memorex discs?

2000-03-02 Thread Aileen Chen

Hey y'all,

I was thinking of picking up a pack of 20 memorex discs for 29.99 USD at my
local circuit city(you can buy online too), and I was just wondering if
anybody has had any problems with memorex discs?

Just wanted to say, "Now and Again" is a fabulous show! I'm pretty sure I'm
not in the target demographic...And even I love it! =) So, do watch the
show!(Jack in the Box commercial: Jack: Our target is MEN Guy: "What's a
target?") Now back to your regularly scheduled MD programming...

hi, speaking of Sony Outlets...Could someone be so kind as to point me to a
website perhaps, that has a list of their outlets. Or better yet, are there
any "near" San Francisco? I have near in quotes, because I don't even really
live near SF myself.

Thanks!

When does the new SCMS (sp?) standard kick in for the US? I mean, I haven't
really bought any CD's for a long long time so I'm kind of in the dark here.

MD: portable and desk MDs buying selection

1999-08-11 Thread Aileen Chen

Hey, i bought a MDBUNDLE 5 that came with a JE-320 and a MZ-EP11. It was
kind of cheap, and I dont really need high quality stuff because I dont live
off of MDs. But I found the bundle to be nice.

Re: MD: md-l-digest V2 #303

1999-08-02 Thread Aileen Chen

Hello everyone,

I am new to the list and fairly new to MD (I got the MDS-JE320 on Saturday).
I am having some trouble recording from my computer to the MD. I used a
1/8" stereo jack to dual RCA jack connectors and set the recording level on
4 just like the manual says, but after listening to it I heard more music
than voices. Strange.

Does anybody have any tips or reviews about the MDS-JE320? I bought it
simply because it 'cheap' and because I already have a stereo, which ruled
out the possibility of getting an Aiwa system with the 5 MD player.
