MD: sec: unclassified LP to MD

2001-05-03 Thread Cramb, Kevin

Gidday All
With all this talk of Vinyl it's about time I copied my small collection of
LPs to MD. What's the opinion on the best (and free :-)) software to
reduce the clicks, pops and general noise?

Many thanks

You can directly correlate the abuse a portable to a laptop given to a
soldier (ie. Bad). A personal laptop gets treated like eggs, also generally
a laptop has enough mass around it to give slightly more protection. A MP3
portable doesn't benefit from this. Try running to a bus, jogging, mountain
biking with a laptop and you'll get into trouble.

Laptop HDD reliability and ability to deal with
abuse (vibrations/knocks/temperature) seems to be a
bit of a mystery to me. I'm sure we can all re-tell
stories of HDD's dying regularly (had it's happen to me).

But I've also had extreme good use from other "field"
units. I work for Rally Australia's Technology Group,
we have been using Laptops in the field for 5 years.
I can't remember a single HDD failure ... these
get abused and transported everywhere, interstate and
overseas (China last time). And have coped with
extreme amounts of dust, extremes of temperature, and
vibrations whilst in use. Why new technology is unable
to produce HDD's that last in these conditions is
a question I can't answer.

But I know you can stick an MD through the wash and it
will still work .. try that with a HDD :)

MD: sec: unclassified: OE, MDLP (was selector box question)

2001-04-19 Thread Cramb, Kevin

I've got a JB940 at home and I have yet to use the LP functionality.

I've always read that MP3 doesn't sound as good as the original, I'm no
audiophile but I like to know the music I listen to is the best reproduction
I can get on my system, so I'm not into MP3 for that reason. After years of
riding sport motorcycles my ears probably couldn't tell if the timbre of the
third cymbals was not shimmering like it shouldso I'm a sucker for
marketing
I am into free music but that's a different issue ;-)
So I read that LP2 is better than MP3 so that's good but it isn't as good as
the original.
Are we the first generation of people who lower their standards of
listening? If you read the media, MP3s will take over the world and LP2
follows on from this. So do we have a conspiracy theory brewing here? Will
uncompressed audio become the expensive audiophile source and compressed be
for the rest of us? I dunno, food for thought maybe? Maybe I'm being a
wanker who should be working instead.
Take care all

LP2 sounds surprisingly good; listen for yourself on a floor demo model, or
on another person's machine, and reach your own conclusion. LP4 is not so
great for music but more than adequate for spoken-word recordings.

Possible entries:-
- Official Creative SB Live Optical card for under £50
- Sony MD with ability to change record level whilst recording
- Decent PC-MD link for portables (including USB 4x transfer...)

just a few thoughts :)

I'm now that proud owner of a JB 940!!! What a nice piece of gear! It's a
silver version that I haven't seen on any sites before. Looks very classy
though. I was told by the sales guy that Australia only got the silver 940.
Fantastic price too, $599 down from $1049 AUD.
Has anyone heard of any SCMS hacks for the 940?

Thanks

Same here ... a PS Audio Lambda II going into an external DAC. However what
I
do now is use the optical output from a Philips 950 CD-RW music deck to the
940
optical in. However I most certainly want all the correct input and output
options in place. Components change!

It is interesting to note that there's a much wider bandwidth on the coax
than
the optical input. I don't give it much thought when going to MD, tho
perhaps a
test is in order.

Yes, the time record function. Requires an external timers ... $25-30 from
Radio Shack.

That actually about sums it up. I've got an R50 and given a good source
for new unrefurbished product I'd probably buy two more. They may not have
MDLP, but they are one hell of a machine. I would put an R50 up against
any deck unit given the available input and output methods (obviously
portables don't have optical out) the R50 is one
hell of a trooper, and can withstand a lot of abuse without sacrificing
sound quality.

just my 2 cents.

MD: sec: unclassified: MD Better??

2001-01-31 Thread Cramb, Kevin

I absolutely love MD..but...
My deck (MDS-303) and now my R-50 are close to paperweights. The 303 has
the ubiquitous optical block problem (still waiting for the Sony recall!!)
and my R-50 has a problem with the buttons not working. I was going to
upgrade to a 640 deck but now I'm not so sure. A CD-R deck is looking
likely but would break my heart as I have heaps of MD music.
Is the new equipment any better?

A post like that is bound to raise some controversy.

First of all, "ease of editing" requires the proper editing hardware. If you
compare the ease of editing on a MD Player/Recorder with the ease of editing
on a computer hooked up to a CD burner, I'd pick the computer any day. MD
brings simple editing to the masses, and computers bring power to the pros.
I'm not saying your statement is wrong, but I don't think it's completely
accurate either.

Second, "long play modes". There are some CDs that can hold up to 80 minutes
of music. MDs can go beyond 80 minutes, but at the cost of audio quality
(i.e.: mono mode or LP-2, LP-4, etc...). And of course if you want to
sacrifice audio quality and compatibility (where the MD can be played) in
favour of recording time, you can do the same by burning MP3s onto CD, which
effectively sacrifices audio quality and vastly reduces compatibility, so
it's a fair comparison.

And lastly, "making live bootleg copies". I've been able to smuggle my
computer and burner into a concert hall and.oh, OK. Maybe MD is better
for bootlegging concerts. :)

Subject: MD: The "proper" use for MIni Discs

Yesterday it occurred to me that all of this arguing about how close an
MD copy comes to the original CD misses the point.

MDs should not (in my humble opinion) be considered substitutes for
CDs. Unless you want constantly buy CDs only to make MD copies of
(since prerecorded MDs are rare) and then sell the CDs at a loss, it
makes no sense to play MDs in an expensive home system while their
original CD sits on the shelf.

If the CD is available, play the CD. The beauty of the MD is that it
has sound quality almost as good as and possibly, to the human ear, as
good as, a CD. While being smaller, better protected, etc.

It is the ideal very high quality portable music medium. Use it in your
car, jog with it. Sure you can buy an expensive deck. Great for
making the highest quality MD copies and titling, but why play back the
MD on your $10,000 stereo unit? Play the original CD.

You want a copy so you can listen while your wife uses her copy of the
CD in another room, that's what so called CD burners are for. Their
prices have dropped way down, as did the price of CDRs.

So wanting an extra copy of a CD is no longer the reason for copying it
on to Md. Portability is the answer. With all of the other noise in
your car, or while you are jogging with a pair of (even if they are very
high quality) headphones, you are still not going to have the sound
quality of a listening room designed specifically for audio. So don't
go crazy trying to argue about whether an MD copy is just as good as a
CD.

It's MUCH better than tape!

I'm new to the list but MDing fro about 4 years. I have a (recently broken)

I hope I can hit you with a few questions.

Seeing it will cost me about $500 AUD to fix my 303 I am looking around for
a replacement. I can get a JE530 at my price range, is it a good deck? I
would like to have Co-ax dig in and the PS-2 titling option would fantastic.
Where is best place to order them over the net?
Any tips on trying to get my 303 servicable again? I tried the tip about
sitting it on the side and upside down, but no joy :-(
