Just got back from a visit to an IBM convention. Perhaps some of you have
seen this, but they're about to debut, or have just debuted, a portable 1 1/2
inch square, 1/8" thin one-gigabyte portable "micro drive" that connects to
all sorts of things. Pretty impressive little thing.

I think the price quoted me was in the 600-800 dollar range.
Now if they, or a few competitor companies with less corporate-ness, can just
deliver it for under 100 bucks.

Regarding digital pass-through
I called Sony Tech and they had to call me back later after "checking it
out".
The response ( on my answ. mach.) was:

"it does contain the processing of the MD output on the digital output, so my
understanding is that it does contain the ATRAC coding as well as any copy
protection..."

In other words, the first phrase is a sure thing from some higher source, but
the second is a guess on the part of the tech who checked it out.
"Processing" could just mean AD/DA, or copy-protection, and not ATRAC.
Still no word-of-God answer.

MD: deep optical question

Here's a question that stumped the Sony tech support guy (shame) that I still
don't have an answer for:

If I pass the optical OUT of a DAT through the optical IN of a Sony
MDS-JE630,
then I take the optical OUT of the Sony to another device by simply pressing
the record button of the Sony with no disc inside, is the passed-through
input signal one that has been ATRAC'd and de-ATRAC'd, or has it been left
untouched?
