Just convert the mp3s into .wav files, use your favorite cd burning
program, and away you go! Most popular MP3 players can do this
(Winamp/Sonique), just use a "wav writer" or "disk writer" output.

Also, many new cd burning programs can actually decode mp3 files on the
fly as they are being burned to CD. The newest EZ CD Creator from Adaptec
and Nero from Ahead can do this. Nero's definately my favorite Windows
burning program.

Check out http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/car/mini_disc.htm
It looks like there are several models listed, plus the dealer locator
might be able to help you out. Crutchfield doesn't carry any Pioneer MD
units as far as I know, and I don't know any other online vendors too
well. There's always eBay, you can usually get good deals on MD stuff but
it's easy to bid way too much on something.

You would be paranoid if you were dealing with radio quality interviews,
but if these were high quality nature sounds I would start to get
paranoid.

D/A-A/D isn't that way people do this, they usually splurge and get a home
deck. That's what I did. My Kenwood deck has all the inputs and outputs I
need (coax and optical for both input and output). The analog portion also
sounds spectacular. I bet you could get some of the older home decks
relatively cheap nowadays.

Generally, no. If your MD recorder can do level sync on digital (as my
Sharp 702 can) it will insert track marks if there is a 2 second pause in
between songs. There are even some mp3 playlist managers that have the
option of adding a pause in between songs (Shuffleplay does this, for
example.) My home deck, a Kenwood 1050MD, however, absolutely will not put
track marks in between tracks when recording from the computer. It's not
too much of a pain though because I usually put the track marks in
afterward while listening in my car.

I use an SBLive value with the Hoontech SB digital bracket, but this is
the case no matter what sound card you use.

Does the player automatically set out all audio data SCMS unlimited or do

I've bought about 20 of these discs. They aren't the prettiest and they
aren't the sturdiest but I've abused these discs more than my nicer TDK
and Sonys (I use those for "archival" recording) because they're the discs
that get re-recorded over and over, tossed around my car, dropped on the
ground, played and recorded in three different units, etc. They're great
discs for the price.

You will need a USB audio device with a TOSLink output. The DATPort and
SonicPort from Opcode have been reported to work very well. The DATPort
has toslink output only, the SonicPort adds analog output. I also believe
Roland has a USB device with optical output. I think minidisco is selling
these right now for around $220.

You are pretty much completely right. The loudness setting is designed for
low volume levels but most people (like me) just keep it on the whole time
simply because it sounds better.
However, perhaps some speakers are not as sensitive to low/high
frequencies at low volume levels as well. So at low volumes the ear hears
even less low and high frequencies. (This is just a wild guess in my part,
I'm sure there are some people with some real knowledge on this list who
can give some input.)

AFAIK the monitoring sound is not ATRACed, as the ATRAC chips can not play

Original data MDs hold 160mb. The new MD-Data2 discs hold 650mb and are
currently being used in Sony's new "discam" camera. Old zips had a 100mb
capacity, and there is a newer 250mb version out as well.

I've only seen this commercial once, but the cable looks like a RJ45
connector, commonly used in ethernet networks and for hooking your PC up
to ADSL or a cable modem. This commercial emphasizes that you can use your
MD to record your music from the net. No, you can't plug the RJ45 directly
into the MZ-R55 ;)

MD: Sanyo MDR-4

2000-02-16 Thread Ian Scott

Hi, I have returned to MD-L after an absence of several months. My factory
car player has finally died and I noticed the Sanyo MDR-4. Does anyone
know if these guys are floating around anymore? I'm probably going to try
and hit all the Wal-Marts along highway 70 in Missouri (the more rural
the better.) I'm probably at least a month too late, however. :( $65 was
just too good to be true. I bet a few clueless folks returned some of
these things, not knowing what the hell it was, thinking they were just
getting a cheap tape player ;)

Anyone know of any other car MD bargains?

Thanks, Ian Scott

Anyway, MD-audio discs ARE playable in MD-data drives. As far as the PC
goes, I think all they can do is just play. They can't even record!
Someone needs to hack some software so we can get the ultimate cheap

Now how many Sony portables can be under $200? None. Why else would these
be cheap? I'd rather spend $200 on a 702 than $300 on an R55 and be faced
with the SLIGHT risk of having to have it fixed uner warranty. I did, and
I'm perfectly happy with having a wonderful recorder I don't have to press
End Search on, has longer battery life, and has (arguably) better sound
quality than the R55. And a remote that I can use with one hand.

The newest drivers (AKA Live!Ware) automatically update the firmware of
