Re: MD: Direct video to TV monitor

2001-08-07 Thread Jacob Alifrangis

When I setup home theatre systems I always use the TV's a/v switcher when
possible, this does not necearily provide better quality (AS FAR AS I HAVE
SEEN) however it provides greater simplicity for the non-techie people in
households.

You can switch the AV inputs on the TV by using the TV/Video button on
remotes and keep the AMP off to watch tv if you have a sony (There is a one
button trick to turn off the built in speakers on WEGAs)

then when you want to watch a DVD or something with surround, just push the
speaker off button and set your amp to it's 5.1 input. which was sperately
routed.

hope it helps.

The problem is not replacing the unit, it is the loss of the steering wheel
controls.
I paid an extra 640 bucks to have the steering wheel controls in my car,
(2000 Regal GS) Now There is only one option if I want to replace my head
unit, and that is to buy a 310 dollar add-on for the steering wheel control,
so I can use my (no-longer) extensive list of md's. I use a nomad jukebox
with a car-adapter, and it sounds ok for everything except classical music
and acoustiv guitar pieces.

I would recommmend contacting professional auto sound in westlake village,
CA. they have some solutions that may surprise you. I don't have their phone
number, but the 1.25 you spend on 411 might be worth it.

cheers! Jacob

Jim, I'm not sure what you are asking? "music" CDRs and "data" CDRs are
just a gimmick to charge more for the music CDRs.

Again, am I misunderstanding your question?

Consider this experiment:
GIVEN:
A (home) minidisk deck has a digital in and out, interfaced to a
computer with Sound Blaster card and digital SPDIF connectors. That
computer is also loaded with CoolEdit 2000 which has, among other neat
features, the ability to generate a 1000 Hz square wave and save it as a
WAV file. Imagine this file is then recorded (again via digital SPDIF)
by the MD and then played back from the MD into the PC again. TO FIND:
Should the "send" and the "return" .WAV files be identical, since the
process is digital thoughout? If not, why not? ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
To stimulate your thinking, please examine the actual results captured
as screen grabs from directly out of CoolEdit: The "send" file":
http://www.hometown.aol.com/dbettsxx/Waves/send.jpg
The "return" file: http://www.hometown.aol.com/dbettsxx/Waves/return.jpg
Your thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

Ok, a bit overkill, but it certainly fits the bill of being portable!
If its anything like my old Palm Professional, it would be about the
size of an MZ-R50. My Palm Professional was, without the case, almost
the exact same size as my R50.

Of course, the R50 sounds a lot better than my Palm Professional ever
did.

Um? That's whacked.

What is it that makes ATRAC3-encoded music more secure than MP3 anyway?
Or rather, what is it that makes Sony THINK that ATRAC3-encoded music is
more secure than MP3?

The capability to hold "secure audio" is something I don't really care
for. I just want to be able to listen to music I've copied from my CD
collection and do the occasional live recording - I don't want to jump
through hoops unless I get an obvious benefit from it. For my R50, the
benefits are size, the remote control (when biking, I keep the R50 in my
backpack and the remote on my shirt), and recordability - the hoops to
jump through are the slow recording speeds and airport security asking
me to explain the battery pack for it (only happened once though).

What's the benefit of secure audio?

Erm, sorry, that mini-rant wasn't directed at anyone in particular, just
the music industry in general.

ONLY Sony/Sharp would make MD devices that could take the 650 MB

Actually if it's buffering the atrac data, it could buffer 200
seconds, and keep buffering at the regular speed in 1.0x realtime.
Thatway the disc would only stay on at 1.0x speeds.

Yes, if the disc would be spinning all the time, the buffer would
always be full, but the player would always be very loud to always
maintain that 200 second buffer.

Today, I took my new MZ-R700 out and I can say it is 'jog-proof'. No
problems.

Oh, one problem: How do you all carry that MD-player while running

I think sport's stores carry something that resembles a fanny pack,

neoprene. i bought one made for a cassette player, and it works
great!
keeps your player snug to your body.

hi,

I have an old MZ-1 that started having troubles years ago and i
tucked it away. sony said the head was out of alignment and wanted
150 USD to fix it. at the time that was WAY more money that i could
spend on anything so i just forgot about it.

recently i pulled it out and started playing w/ it. When i put in a
MD it makes a clicking noise and takes about 10seconds or more to
recognise the MD, the same thing when i hit play. after its playing
i can FF or RW(que) or skip tracks back and forth w/ out a problem.

theres limited info on the web about something so old, but i was
wondering if anyone knew of a quick fix for this, i remember at least
one MD unit that service mode could realign the head, but the listing
for the MZ-1 on minidisc.org said this isn't one of them. and to me
it doesn't sound like its a head alignment problem cause otherwise it
couldn't record(it does i tested it same time issue/clicking as play
but it will start eventually) or play.

Analog is recorded with sine waves, whereas digital is recorded with
square waves, which take up more room.
Also, tapes sound better if the tape is moved past the head faster
(lower density).
So there is less available time that the tape has per foot. So the data
is compressed to make it fit.

I wonder why they would have to compress it? To me it seems that
digital music shouldn't take up more room than analog? Did the DCC
offer more music per tape?

DCC Uses PASC a derivitave of mpeg, is lossy, but not more than an mp3.

See braindonors.net for more information

Blanks are a real pain to find. But DCC deck for 50 isn't bad.
It will also spit out the analog tapes with S/PDIF and Coax :)

Hello-

I know this is the MD list, but I figured some of you probably had DCC
players back in the day.

In my ever-lasting quest for a recording medium that provides
optical/digital out (for transfer to PC/CDR) I have come across a DCC
deck. It's going for $50 on ebay right now, and has optical/coax
in/out.

I also get the feeling that maybe DCC is not compressed sound? Only
problem is finding blanks. The guy is giving two blanks with the unit,
and I guess I could just recycle, but does anyone know of a place
selling blank DCC? Is it worth getting into? The price is right, but
do you guys think it's totally a dead medium at this point?

RE: MD: Help with MD-Discam video transfer to PC

2001-05-29 Thread Jacob Alifrangis

I would check to see if the camera supports usb or firewire (iLink)

Otherwise I would expect this to be another sony-shot-itself-in-the-foot
argument.

Hi Bo,

I'm sorry, I really know very little about the MD Discam. I'm forwarding
your note to the MD mailing list with the hope that someone there can
help. Frankly, this is really a question for video users, not the usual
MD crowd.

MD: MZ-R55CG Autorecording Start

2001-05-28 Thread Jacob Alifrangis

Ok, Well I bought a second MZ-R55 Unit with the intention to use a
tandem/relay recording setup but the unit I bought (Clearance) has the
auto-recording problem.
I can send the unit to sony no problem, but what is this problem exactly.
I've heard a lot about this problem, but I cannot find any info on it.

Cheers!

Yes, there is. But it is not as technical as this one. Here is a link:

With a firmware update, nomads behave just like large cumbersome
hardrives that need a proprietary application to organize files.

The Nomads are 6Gb too ... but is this replaceable ?
The Nomad is kinda large (more like a portable CD player)
Do the Nomads have the ability to act as a portable HDD (for
any file type?)
I do like the ability to record WAV uncompressed at 48Khz .. Nice.

The bottom line is MD is getting swamped with all these other
new technologies and unless they stay on the ball and start
adding professional and consumer use requirements (like faster
then real time transfers) I believe it will go the way of the
dodo (or should I say the Tassie Tiger which there is a "small"
amount of hearsay evidence that it may not be extinct just yet).

How many others are starting to feel this way ?

Funny part is, if Sony had been listening to it's early adopters
(like the good subscribers to mdl) then they would have had
the jump on all these new technologies and truly cemented
MD's place in history like Vinyl, Compact Cassette and CD (now DVD)
and not considered by the next generation to be just another DCC,
DAT, LD, or BETA (all of which have their use, but in the "general
public's" view are dead and buried formats).

Cheers GC

PS: I recently came across some old video cassettes that I don't
know the history of .. they are huge (50% larger then VHS and
really thick) I've never seen a player that can play them ...
anyone know something about these?
