If you remove a label, it is possible to remove all the crap and glue from the MD using any household polish. I know this sounds weird, but all the glue and paper soak up the polish and using a cloth or tissue will wipe the stuff off. It takes a while, but if you can be bothered, then you can do it. MD: Dixons and the MD702
Well you lot most probibly don't care too much about all the hassle I had with my Sharp unit, but I thought it best to warn you lot about our old friends Dixons, especially seeing as it is xmas and all! Recap: Bought a MD702 18 months ago for 299.99 UKPounds, it went wrong outside the guarantee, but _was_ covered by MasterCare. Took it back to be repaired (UTOC error) 4 times. Hit the roof after the 4th, contacted the MD of Dixons, no messing about any more! Took it back in to be written off for good this time. They said that I would have to wait 10 days after it had been received by them to get my money back. I waited... and waited then after just over two weeks emailed them to find out what was going wrong. They said that they were waiting for it to be written off. Spat my dummy out, they said that the vouchers will be in the post the next day. Got the v(ouch)er last night for ... £200, they said that that is all it was worth now. Funnily enough, I hit the roof again, and when I came too, rubbed my head, and emailed the Manager of the Customer Services, who was "dealing" with the case. They contacted me again and said that they would fax the details to the store that I was going to. I don't know what you lot think, but I don't think that it is fair that they should offer one price when I payed a lot more initially. Typical 'insurance' companies, always your friend until you need them... I wonder if Sharp would like to hear about this... So todays lesson kiddies, purchase a nice dummy and attatch it to yourself via some string and a saftey-pin. This way when ever you spit the thing out, it remains clean and you don't have to spend too much time hunting around the floor looking for it! MD: Dixons Problem 95% Resolved
Just to let you MDers know, I managed to sort out the problems I was having with our old Friend Dixons (huge department store in the UK) by finding out the Managing Director's email address (no messing about, me, straight to the top!) I sent him an email, stating what had happened, and that it was now the 4th time it had broken. Threatening the IOB might have been the secret word, or even the ginger one at Watchdog! I got a phonecall this morning from the Customer Services Manager who stated that they are writing the unit off, and that I am going to be re-imbursed with vouchers to the cost of it & what is left with my insurance term. The only thing left now is to decide what unit(s) to get. Please can anyone let me know what I should do... Scenario a) I want a unit for home, which will have a remote, or keyboard interface, optical would be nice (no use yet) b) I also want to get a portable, for recording gigs (my own etc) and the like, optical (see above) I was thinking of getting the Sony MD with a docking station (model number unknown), but am unaware of pitfalls etc. Option: Sony JE330 Stack unit (checked MD homepage, but there was not much info on it) Does it have a remote, optical etc? help would be appreciated... MD: Dixons / Mastercare
Just thought I'd let you lot know that I got my MD701 back today after a third attempt to repair the problem with the UTOC errors. The last time that I sent it back to get repaired, the buttons on the device failed to work. The reason THEY FORGOT TO PUT THE CONNECTOR BACK ON THAT CONTROLS THE BUTTONS! >:O( I am NEVER EVER purchasing another thing from Dixons ever again. If the support team cannot put a simple plug onto a board after it has been back for its SECOND repair, then I don't think I can trust them on what else they have forgotten... Maybe Sharp should hear about this... On the other hand... anyone know of another place (NOT DIXONS) that can supply a Sony Stack MD unit cheap, let me know. Keith. RE:MD: Sony Dropping MD
Hey I'd think about dropping MD if the cost of solid state media dropped to below 2UKP per hundred meg instead of circa 60UKP for 50mb. That is roughly what MD can store, and if there were mp3/whatever players out there that could write onto cheap archival media then I am sure it would be a big hit, but for the next three years I cannot see that happening! >A colleague here in the UK tells me that they recently heard a radio >programme in which it was suggested that Sony will drop MD in 12 to 18 >months time due to the poor uptake of this technology in the USA and the >impending large scale release ans promotion of solid-state digital media >players now that SDMI is spec'd. MD: Dixons / Mastercare
Hello people, I just thought I'd let you lot know how _useless_ I think the extra guarantee is that Dixons offer you when you purchase any electronic merchanidise from them >:-C I bought a Sharp MD701 when they first came out and I payed 299UKP for it. When I was in the shop the nice assistant asked me if I wanted to take out any extra cover on the item. Seeing that it was a portable unit I thought that it would be an extremly good idea seeing as I would be using it in a gigging environment and it would be near pints of beer and drummers (prone to accidents). Well I had the unit for a while, around 18 months, and I seemed to be getting UTOC Errors on the device. I decided that I would take the unit in for repair as I had lost a recording that I did in a club, and it was the last straw. I took it into the Dixons in Orpington (Dixons Ltd, High St., ORPINGTON, Kent, BR6 0JW) where they promptly sent it off after asking me what was wrong with the unit. While it was away, we played our best gig to date... without being able to record it >:0[. I had a phone call to collect it and went into the shop to collect it. Took it home and started using it again. I was recording on it again one night when I noticed there was an error message appearing on the screen (DEFECT) and the device was then adding a new track. I decided to look at the documentation that I got back with the unit showing me what they had repaired. To my disgust, they found no error. So I sent it back AGAIN, unfortunately my band were going to France to do some recording... couldn't take it with me yet again. Well to cut a long rant short, I got it back and they had replaced the laser, but NONE of the buttons worked! I thought that this was extremely incompetent of Mastercare and decided to complain, I just want a MiniDisc recorder that works be it my 701 or whatever. I telephoned Dixons HQ yesterday and they told me that I cannot have a replacement unit because it has not been written off by MasterCare or been gone for more that six weeks. Even though it HAS been back THREE times now for more that six weeks in total for the SAME problem. I just thought I would warn you lot, if your player plays up, take it back while it is under its manufacturers guarantee. By the way I've CC'd this message to MasteCare and will let you lot know what they say. Keith. I have got a really really crap CD player in my car and I have a 701 portable player. The only connection problem that I have is that the CD player does not have a line in on it. I have seen boot loader systems that have a little transmitter box in the boot and you can pick up the frequency on the radio. I have been sent some curcuit diagrams showing how to make a transmitter and would love to share it with any 'beany caps' out there.
