I haven't found any sources for the 770.
The 940 can't be controlled by the PC Link kit? I was pretty sure my
920 could, via the S-Link input using one of those PCLK kits that cost
about $150.

I'm selling my Sony MDS-JB920 (I've got it on Ebay right now if anyone
is interested)
http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1246402719

I'm thinking to replace it with a new, cheap plastic MDLP capable deck.
I record digitally all the time, and I'm sure my hearing isn't all that
discriminating, so I really don't need the JB920's better ADC/DAC and
other nice features.
I was just wondering if anyone knows what improvements were added from
the MDS-JE470 over the JE440? Does the JE470 support track grouping
like the JE770 is supposed to?
Is there any cheaper place to buy a JE470 than etronics?

RE: MD: Problems with CD-TEXT to title MD

2001-04-17 Thread Kenneth Lee

Hi Josh,

The audio is fine, being copied to MD with no problem, just the text is not
going thru.. the JB940 says "TEXTPROTECT". I think ECDC 5.0 just don't have
the option to let you have the control over it's copy-right settings.

RE: MD: Problems with CD-TEXT to title MD

2001-04-16 Thread Kenneth Lee

Thanks Josh,

The situation described here seems to be the problem exactly. However,
seems the work-around does not apply to the JB940. When I hit the AMS node
and try to enter the name, the memory buffer seems to be empty, and no name
is being entered. Now only if I can find a way to create an audio CD with
full control on the copy-right status, including the CD-text info, the
problem can be solved. Any ideas about which cd burning software can do
this? Or how to do this in Easy CD Creator 4.0/5.0?

Thanks for your reply,
Ken

Well from browsing around minidisc.org, I found this
(it's about the MXD-D3, let me know if it works for you):

"One of the things I love about the MXD-D3 is the fact
that it transfers CD-Text information to the MD when
recording from CD, so you don't have to sit and title it
all manually. However, it appears there are some SCMS-
like rules for CD-Text also, and when using most burning
software I get a 'TextProtect' error, meaning that the
song can be copied but the text won't get to the MD.
However, I've noticed a glitch that still allows the
text to be transferred. When the unit is copying a CD,
it puts the CD-Text title in a 'name buffer' on the MD
side. Then the unit uses the buffer to insert the new
information into the TOC. When it's copying a CD-Text
disc with protected text, it still copies the name to
this buffer, but then doesn't send the name to the TOC.
I've found that while the unit is copying, if you wait
until after the unit says 'textprotect' hit the AMS
knob. Select 'name?' and then 'name in?'. The data is
there! just hit 'yes' and it copies the name to the TOC.
I know it's slightly more 'manual' than it should be,
but it still beats titling manually. -Adam Sowers"

Thanks for replying... I tried your idea, but it doesn't seem to be working.
It seems like there is somekind of protection like the SCMS that they placed
on the cd. The music can pass thru, but not the cd text. Hum.. if you have
some idea in using Easy CD Creator 4.0/5.0 it will be helpful. If I can
change the settings of the copy-right status of the cd.

2001-04-16 Thread Kenneth Lee

Hi everybody. I just want to post this to see if
anyone have the same problem. I am using Easy CD
Creator 5.0 to burn some audio CDs. I entered the
CD-text info also, and hoping when I copy the disc to
MD, I don't have to type the track title again.
However, when I make the copy, the MD recorder says
TEXTPROTECT. This is the first time I ever see this
message, and obviously, no title has been made, and it
seems the cd-text info on the cd has been copy-right
protected. Does anyone know what went wrong here? I
don't see any option in Easy CD Creator for me to
check or uncheck the copy-right protection. How can I
work over this problem? I am using the Sony JB940,
and a Sony CD changer, with s-link connected. Any
ideas are welcome. Thanks.

I used CoolEdit 96 almost from the start and upgraded to CE2000
several months ago. Many things are almost the same, so there isn't
much of a learning curve, so far as I can see. Like WinME, the
user interface looks a bit slicker. It probably has lots of little changes,
so whether it'd be worth the price to you depnds on whether any of
those changes are important to you.

MAh means milli-amps hour, so the higher the mah, the longer will your
player run before running out of battery. As long as the voltage is the
same.. 1.5v in case of E900, there is no problem at all to use either
battery in your E900, just the 1350mah one will run out faster, but this
isn't a problem.. I only charged my battery once, and the E900 is still
running after 2-3 weeks or occasional use!! =) Great battery life on the

Try to close other service programs running in the background of your
computer.. like antivirus and the like, this should free up some system
resources, so you can record in 44.1khz Or you can upgrade your computer by
adding more memory.
If you have the 32khz file already, the burner program should be able to
recognize it and transform it to 44.1k.. try to use Adaptec Easy CD Creator
4.0. If not, your sound editing program should also be able to do a
re-sampling of the file, and expand it to 44.1k. Good luck

Subject: MD: recording to CD

Hi,

This is slightly off topic, and for that I apoloigize. But I have a
question that I'm sure someone in this group can help me with.

I use my Sharp MD 722 to record live music quite often. The sound
quality on the MD master is always superb and as flawless as one can
expect from a live recording. I recently recorded a friend's band off a
sound board patch and the quality is so good that they now want to post
it to their web site... My problem is that when I record it to my hard
drive, there are skips in the sound that do NOT exist on the MD. They
sound like digital hicups that happen momentarily when you listen to a
CD through your computer and you open a big program. They are very short
(less than a second) but annoying and detract from a recording they
could sell or give thier fans...

I've been told to lower the bit rate on my editing program (Sound Forge
4.5) from the default 44,100. When I did (the next lowest setting is
32,000), the recording came out fine, but the CD burner software then
told me that the files were not "of CD quality" and wouldn't burn to CD.

Ideas? Should I re-set the bit rate? To what if so? Or is there
something else entirely I should be doing?

Thanks for your help. Since this is a bit off-topic, if you want to
reply only to me, that's fine.

Charlie

software? Try poking around on the web and seeing if you can download the
dlls that only come with the asian windows packages.
http://www.japansh.com/hintstips.htm has some stuff listed but I didn't
spend a lot of time searching so try at your own risk.

I think of the same thing too.. but I don't know Japanese, and I have to use

the M-Crew software, not the driver... without the driver, the thing just
won't work neither... I'll check out the link below, and see what I can

For some reasons, the software CD that come with the

RE: MD: . dvd to md

The digital output on the dvd is set to AC-3 default. And MD only can copy
atereo. So if you want to copy digitally, you have to down mix the dvd
output to stereo first. I don't know whether your dvd player have this
option, if not you have to stay with analog.

hello-

i'm a recent addition to the minidisc world, and this list.

i picked up a display model MDS-JE440 unit about a month ago, and both me
and my girl got MZ-E60 portable units. i can't believe i didn't get into
minidisc before, because it's just so easy to use.

we make mix-discs for when we're in school and stuff from our CDs, but i
simply can not digitally record from dvd (pioneer dv-333) onto minidisc. i
don't understand why this is because i own the dvds and i'm making one
personal copy, but still, no go.

so i'm stuck with analog for now, but i was trying to see if anyone here has
successfully copied the dvd soundtrack digitally to minidisc. i think i
remember one dvd allowing me to do such a thing, but most of them don't. i
don't know if it's a function of the minidisc recorder, or the dvd player.

any information would be greatly appreciated.

Agreed! I have the 940 and the E900. and they make a great couple...

Hello Lion. IMHO this is not true. I think the LP2 mode is perfectly
acceptable for mobile use. I think it's a real plus for this reason. The
LP4
mode is great for time shifting FM radio, etc. Another boon. I personally
would not purchase an MD unit without the LP feature for these reasons. I
have
to portable units, an E40 player and an R50 recorder/player. And I have a
940
deck with LP. I plan to add an R900 or similar Sharp unit (ST70?) soon. LP
is
that useful in my hands.

Of course your priorities may be different.

I have a couple of Sony optical cables for sale... they are perfectly ok,
but I just don't need them anymore since I am getting a lot of those lately
from friends. These are not those cheap cable that come with the
recorders..it's the retail version, which is thicker with more insulation
and better contructions. The model number is POC-15A. with the standard
rectangular connectors on both side, which will be compatible with the PC3
and computer digital sound card. These are selling for $35-$40 from Sony,
and I am just asking for $20 each. Let me know if you are interested.

it's only one way from the pc to the pc3,... it can be
of any sound formats... mp3, wav, wma...etc. but you
can't copy from the md back to the pc using this usb

sound card with optical input, you can just record the
md back to pc using the optical output on the pc3... I
was using this setup for a couple years already using

RE: MD: MD Better??

As I know, the most important part on MD recording is the encoding part,
since the 940 use the type-R DSP on SP recorder, you are getting one of the
best encoding that was previously available on Sony ES deck only.
Concerning about the compatibility on previous generations of MD player, SP
recordings are 100% compatible, and can be reproduced on all MD equipments.

What did you think about straight recording on the 940? The quality
compared to

out
tonight. I am concerned about the 2x cost over the 440. But if the sound
and
build quality are there I might go for it.

BTW, can you play back the 940 non-LP MD's on a prior generation player and
get
the same quality benefits?

Yeah. I agree with this one.. Just tested out some recording on my new JB940
last night.. LP2 and SP is pretty much the same... but LP4 is a little
different, the two channels aren't quite separated as LP2 and SP.. however,
without comparison, I think it's quite difficult to tell the difference,

I personally call preparing songs for burning on a computer "creating" or
"preparing." IMO, "editing" is what you do with something after it's been
created.

CD can't be edited, MD can. If you burn a CD and later want to change it,
you have to redo it from scratch. In my book, MD blows CD away for
editing (and I say that as someone who has both MD and CD-R).

Actually, from every report I've found, LP2 has sound very comparable to
standard MD when used as a portable medium.

When you burn MP3's onto CD (not by converting them to CD Audio, but by
keeping them as MP3), the only way you can play them back is on the
computer or in a specialized CD player -- those players are novelties,
and often cannot playback all MP3 files. If you have a MiniDisc recorder
(especially a portable) that records in LP2 mode, you can take that
portable with you and play it, or you can play the MD back on any newer
MD player with LP mode. Granted, some people won't have a portable with
long play mode, but at least LP is the standard now, and an LP unit will
play back any MD recorded in LP mode. Plus a CD with MP3s doesn't sound
as good as a MiniDisc recorded in LP2 mode.

Hi, I remember sometime ago we talked about a S-link connector kit for PC to
control a Sony CD player and MD recorder with the MD Editor software. Does
anyone here still remember where can I find a place online to purchase this?
What I want to do is to have a GUI program to make MD compiliations from my
200 CD changer, and do simple editing and controls. If anyone know any
alternative to this, or other DIY solution, please let me know, since the
Sony kit is priced at $150 as I checked last time. Thanks for any input.

By head cleaner, I assume you are referring to a MD that slides into the
clam shell opening. I am trying to figure out, what could be different
about the R5 that it would require a different cleaner?

I never got a cleaner, how often do you find it necessary to do?

Re: MD: Ripping CD's to MP3 ?

It is very simple to do. Download Audiocatalyst from
http://www.xingtech.com. Then put CD in CD drive so progam will read track
list and song lengths. Next uncheck all tracks but track #1. Right click on
last track and select properties. Under sectors write down last sector
number. You will modify track #1 to end at this sector. Then right click on
track #1. Select properties and chand end sector to mathe the end sector of
the last track. Hit grab and be done.

MD: 3 second silence on Sony MDS-JE330

1999-11-08 Thread Kenneth Barsocchini

When I make a digital recording using a Sony JE-330 everything goes fine.
When I record a concert CD that is miss-tracked I have to combine or add a
track mark. Every time I do this I get a 3 second blank space before the
track I edit. With a live show the songs run together and the silent gap
messes up the flow of the songs. How do I avoid the gap. When 7you access
the track directly the gap is not present. It only show up when you play the
track before it. The gap belongs to the next track. The display reads. track
4 -0:03, track 4 -0:02, track 4 -0:01, track 4 -4:00. Is this gap a defect
of the unit or a menu setting I need to change.

OK - so I saw the add in a comic book (Hitman if you must know)

It seem Sony has a new unit that has a CD player and a MD deck.
The photo looked like a MXD-D1
http://www.connact.com/~eaw/minidisc/part_Sony_MXD-D1.html

But most interesting was the 4x claim.
Thats right - it will "rip" tracks at 4x (depended on CD quality / errors)

Anyone else know about this (or did I miss the discussion?)

Never mind - surfing hte MD list(new location) yeilds
http://www.europe.sony.com/forum/ifa99_20.html
which is for the MXD-D3 model.

Now - is this avail in the states and how much?
It would make my mixes faster as I currently do CD to MD in real time
with a mixer. With a 4x ripper I could do the MD "compilation"
and then burn the CD from the MD (which is what I do now anyway).
Oh - pro MD unit and Pro CDR stand alone means I dont worry about
SCMS. And I *own* the source material (its for DJ work).
