MD: Wanted: 2nd-hand Soundcard with optical input

2001-10-07 Thread Mathew J. Newton

Hi,

As is probably common with a lot of people on this list I am looking for a
soundcard with an optical input as I intend to transfer my entire MD
collection to CD unfortunately I feel it's now time me and MDs went our
seperate ways.

So, if anyone has got such an item and would be willing to sell it then feel
free to e-mail me off-list with the details. I live in the UK so would
prefer a UK/European source although I'm sure we could work something out if
you live elsewhere.

Many thanks in advance,

Mathew

P.S. This will mean I'll have 80 blank minidiscs for sale (74 + 80min,
mostly Sony) if anyone's interested! All in good nick with cases (unbroken)
etc...

MD: Wanted: Transport mechanism for a MDS-JE510

2001-07-27 Thread Mathew J. Newton

Hi everyone,

Does anyone have a broken JE510 MD Deck that I could purchase the transport
mechanism from (obviously I'd prefer the fault not to be with the
transport!)? The recording head on mine got mangled and it seems to have
stopped the whole thing working.

Can anyone help? I am based in the UK but given the (relatively) small
weight of the mechanism I would be willing to pay the postage for an
overseas item.

Yours in anticipation,

Mathew

MD: 'Problems' with my Sony 7900 In-Car MD Player

2000-08-04 Thread Mathew J. Newton

Hi all,

My Sony 7900 in-car MD player seems to be having some sort of 'problem' related to
its RDS Traffic Announcement feature. I am hesitant to use the word 'problem' as it
could well be an inherent consequence of how this RDS feature works but hopefully
someone out there might be able to explain what's going on

Whilst listening to the radio with the TA feature enabled I occasionally suddenly get
a momentary muting of the sound and the words 'EON-TA' appears very briefly on the
LCD. The music then reappears and everything is okay...

The Traffic Announcement feature does work in that when another station is
broadcasting a traffic update it successfully switches over to that station until the
programme has finished. During this correct operation of the TA feature the display
does not display 'EON-TA' as in my 'problem' but correctly displays the radio station
name.

Am I correct in assuming that whilst I have TA enabled the radio is continuously
scanning the other radio frequencies looking for the RDS TA databit (assuming the RDS
information is digitally encoded) and when it comes across one that is then it
switches the main tuner over to the traffic-broadcasting frequency? I say *main* tuner
because I imagine that for it do this it must have two tuners to simultaneously tune
in to two different frequencies? I figured that it must just scan the *entire*
frequency range as it sometimes tunes in to traffic bulletins from radio stations that
I don't have set in my presets.

Has anyone come across this 'EON-TA' message and consequential muting of the sound? I
thought that possibly the machine is picking up a TA databit that it shouldn't be -
possibly from a radio station unintentionally, and momentarily, transmitting a TA bit?
Incidentally I have only the noticed the problem recently so it could well be due a
problem locally although I must admit I never used to really have the TA facility
enabled elsewhere.

Can anyone shed any light on my problem? Or even point me in the direction of some RDS
information with a somewhat more technical approach to it than the many available
'descriptions' of the RDS service?

All thoughts and ideas welcome,

Mathew

MD: Purchasing MD equipment from the US (to the UK)

2000-06-30 Thread Mathew J. Newton

Hi,

Has anyone out there (UK members specifically) had much experience in
purchasing MD equipment mail order from the US?

I have a friend in Arizona who would be willing to purchase an MD Player
on my behalf and send it to me here in the UK. Is there anything anyone
can recommend in order for this to be done without 'attracting' customs
charges, VAT etc? Can anyone shed any light on what the legalities of
this are?

If anyone has any experience of this I would be interested to hear any
advice you may have to offer. I assume that me doing it this way would
be better than purchasing direct from the mail order supplier and
getting them to ship it?

I am relatively new to this list and can appreciate that this could well
be a topic that has been heavily discussed before - apologies if this is
the case.

Kind regards,

Mathew
