Subject: MD: Cyndi Lauper MD Recording-Multiple Sources, Multiple
Questions

I just made a Cyndi Lauper compilation MD using various digital and
analog sources mixed on the MD. The material I copied from is as
follows:

Compact Discs

Cyndi Lauper-She's So Unusual

Cyndi Lauper-True Colors

Cyndi Lauper-The Best Remixes (Import)

DVD's

Cyndi Lauper-Twelve Deadly Cyns..And Then Some (copy protected) (5.1
Dolby Digital and PCM Stereo) (selectable)

All Time Party Classics Volume One (Promotional DVD Music Videos For
DJ's) (not copy protected-contains Girls Just Want To Have Fun and about
50 other popular music videos of the 80's and 90's-PCM Stereo Only)

Commercial MiniDisc

Cyndi Lauper-Twelve Deadly Cyns..And Then Some

I made a two MD compilation of The Eagles a few days ago. I used the new
box set Selected Works 1972-1999 and TM Century HitDiscs for a few songs
not in the collection. I also wanted to use the Hotel Calfornia version
of Victim Of Love, but the levels on the previously released Eagles CD's
were much lower than on the box set, so I used the live version of
Victim Of Love from the fourth disc in the set, The Millenium Concert
instead. For this reason, I'm wondering if I should purchase the CD
version of Twelve Deadly Cyns...And Then Some. More on that to follow.

As far as Cyndi Lauper, here's the track listing as it stands now before
moving or deleting an tracks-the only two on the possible delete list
are one of the Girls Just Want To Have Fun short versions and Iko Iko,
mainly to make room for the LP version of What's Going On. I did not
include the 1995 version of Girls Just Want To Have Fun (Hey Now) which
is closer to Redbone's Come And Get Your Love than the 1983 original
Girls Just Want To Have Fun.

Track Listing:

1. Girls Just Want To Have Fun-Extended Version (Digital from The Best
Remixes)

2. Change Of Heart-Extended Version (Digital from The Best Remixes)

3. She Bop-Special Dance Version (Digital from The Best Remixes)

4. Girls Just Want To Have Fun-LP Version (Digital from She's So
Unusual)

5. Time After Time (Digital from She's So Unusual)

6. She Bop-LP Version (Digital from She's So Unusual)

7. True Colors (Digital from True Colors)

8. Change Of Heart-LP Version (Digital from True Colors)

9. I Drove All Night (Analog PCM Stereo from Twelve Deadly Cyns DVD)

10. The Goonies 'R' Good Enough-Dance Remix (Digital from The Best
Remixes)

11. All Through The Night (Digital from She's So Unusual)

12. Money Changes Everything-Extended Live Version (Digital from The
Best Remixes)

13. What's Going On-Club Version (Digital from The Best Remixes)

14. Girls Just Want To Have Fun-LP Version (Digital PCM Stereo from All
Time Party Classics Volume One DVD)

15. Iko Iko (Digital from True Colors)

The levels and the sound on The Best Remixes are excellent and those
recordings sound the best. She's So Unusual and True Colors have much
higher overall levels than the anemic previously released Eagles CD's,
but the recording sounds a bit harsh/muddy? But it also sounds as if it
were deliberately recorded that way.

I know I can't record the commercial DVD digitally, but is it best to
use the 5.1 track or the PCM track to record the audio from-if you
choose the 5.1 track, will the MD recorder miss the information in the
rear channels entirely. I doubt if recording from The Twelve Deadly Cyns
MD to blank MD would yield as good a result as CD or DVD to MD,
especially considering the no doubt earlier ATRAC version used in the
now several years old prerecorded MD. For this reason, I'm thinking
maybe the CD of Twelve Deadly Cyns would be better to buy and use for
the album tracks-if they were remastered in any way over the original
store CD's of She's So Unusual and True Colors. Some Cyndi Lauper stuff
is also on SACD, but I don't have a SACD/DVD player-yet. I also put
together similar compilations of Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera
Dance Remix MD's over the past several days, but with the exception of
one Christina Aguilera track from DVD, those were all digital. And
they're also newer recordings so they use state of the art mastering to
begin with, unlike the older Cyndi Lauper commercial MD's-except for the
Dance Remixes import. Thoughts on how to get the best sound out of the
existing Cyndi Lauper material I have, or if I should purchase a CD copy
of Twelve Deadly Cyns to get the very best CD sound available on a non
SACD Sony

I've been trying to buy a sharp 722 to replace my 702 which just stopped
recording. I found a place on the web that said they had the 722 for $190
so I ordered one. Today the package arrives and they sent me a sharp
md-sr60 instead of a 722. So I call the place up and they say that sharp
has stopped making the 722 so they sent me the sr60 as a replacement (they
charged me less for the sr60 than they would've for the 722). Is this
legal? I wanted a 722 because it has the same battery type and the same
front loading (slot) mechanism as the 702 does. Does anyone know where I
might find a new 722 (not sure if I trust e-bay)??
thanks,
matt

Dear Friends from the Minidisc Community,

A few months ago, I decided to sell MiniDisc and accessories with a friend
of mine on the Internet. For me, it was a "on the side business". I decided
to do that because I am a music fan and I've found that the Mini-Disc was a
good media to record and listen to my favorite music. It is recordable, can
contain as much information as a CD, and is quite affordable to everybody.

I decided to get involve in selling this type of media because I liked it,
and to serve as much as I could the Minidisc community, period. To make
money was not my first intention. I have also learn how complicated it was
to build a business with a good service on the net. If anybody tried that
already you probably know what I am talking about. All that is involved was
in enormous amount of work for me. Building the web page, following up
orders, organizing the shipping, purchasing and maintaining a minimum
inventory, finding not expensive carrier for shipping, trying to have
tracking capabilities for the service, etc.

On the top of that, the follow up on those who were not satisfied and were
complaining about every detail and were trying to get the most for their
money.that was not an easy task, and I had to admit that I also have my own
life and I started to feel the influence of this pressure that was just
growing and growing. But, I remember my first goal. It was to help the
MiniDisc community get good products at an interesting price.

So, today, I am about to close my store on the Internet and I will do a
Big Liquidation Sale for all the products I have in stock!

I want to leave a message to those who have supported me during those few
months. Thank you very much. Thank you very much also to those I tried to
serve but I didn't meet your expectation. I feel sorry about that.but I
learn something. The Internet is not an easy way to make business and build
relationship, not more than in the real world.

Maybe some of you will think I give up too fast, but it is too demanding
right now for my personal life and for the real work I really do for living.
This work is more related to the giftware wholesale market for the company
Kheops International. I thank you all for your understanding and if you have

I encourage you also to visit my competitors (especially Les lee from Music

I have, what was at the time, a top of the line portable Sony with an
optical out. Not only is this a very convenient way to go (you can take
your two portables to a friend's house and make MDs from his collection
:) ) but this unit is the best tracking CD player that I have ever
owned.

Unfortunately like most Sony products, even though I have hardly used
it, the remote died already!

I'm a french MD user and I have a few questions. I'm only a beginner and =
I need some help.=20

Here's my problem: I want to record digitally on my minidisc portable =
recorder. My stereo doesn't have any optical output and my computer =
doesn't have a digital or a coax output. I'm wondering if I definitely =
need my computer with another sound card or if I can do it with my =
stereo.=20

When I record from the 2xRCA connections of my stereo to the analogue IN =
of my MD, is it digital or analogue recording?=20

If it's only analogue, can I record digitally from my stereo that has =
2xRCA connections (By the way, what's the difference with coax =
connections?) to my MD (with a digital IN) by using a little unit that =
sits between the stereo and the MD and converts the signal from the =
stereo into an optical format signal? For example, the Midiman CO2 unit, =
which has coax I/O and optical I/O is used for digital recording from a =
computer soundcard.=20

If this works, would it send trackmarks to my MD recorder?=20

If this doesn't work, do I absolutely need a optical output to record =
digitally from a stereo?=20

If so, the only other solution for me (if I don't want to buy a new =
stereo) is to buy a digital out soundcard and to record from my =
computer, isn't it? Would you buy one if you were in my place? Which one =
is good value for its price?=20

Finally, I'd like to know what provides the best sound quality and the =
worst. Why?=20

- recording from the 2xRCA connections to the analogue IN=20

- recording from the 2xRCA connections to the digital IN using CO2 unit=20

- recording digitally with an optical OUT soundcard=20

Thanks a lot !=20

I fully agree. I have done a considerable amount of business with Peter.
He
may at times seem a little aggressive in promoting his own business. But he
tries just as hard to inform us of deals that offer nothing for him.

He obviously spends a great deal of time searching the web to find these.
There has been talk that many of his own ads have been banned. This is
grossly
unfair. He as saved anyone who has taken advantage of his non ads much more
than it would cost him to advertise.

I strongly support him and his efforts.

I have never met the man. No nothing about him (other than he is French
Canadian-which he told us-and has a little trouble with English). He is a
very
reliable person to do business with.

i dont have a 722, but what i can say is that i found in a neat little
sports store around where i live (mc sports or something like that) a
neoprene armband case for small walkman's that fit perfect on my sony r55.
i've found it hardly ever skips on my upper arm, but when i have it on a
belt thingy or any other place it skips.

RE: MD: 722 problem

2000-11-01 Thread Peter Forest

Hi...

I have a Sharp MS-722, I record from CD, from my home system and from my
portable and there is not really a difference on skipping...

I jog and run all days with my portable unit and it skips only once.. The
reason was the way the player was placed in my wallet when I jog... I don't
know the real good position, but there is one position that is not good for
skipping...

I have a sport belt case that is really great to hold very thight my
portable unit on my body on it the case...

Hope this could help...

How much shock protection does the 722 have - 10 or 40 seconds? I know my

handle a jog, especially if the point of play is near the end of the disc.

RE: MD: Xitel MDport-DG1 or Soundcard?

Sorry if I'm not objective, but Xitel MD Port an1 and dg1 are the best
optical and analog port I ever used...

No conflicts, no installation (basic installation) it's USB port, don't need
to open your computer, for me, it's the best !

I don't sell DG1 anymore since there is, however, some conflict with some
kind of recorder player... They will fix this soon and then, I will probably
bought again from Xitel... Now I only sell the AN1 that I used too...

I'd just like to point out that if you want to use your computer for
lots of audio stuff (not just mp3->minidisc) then the SBLive is
probably not a good purchase, since it has very high latency.

Because that is referring to DOS drivers, even the SBLive is only
"compatible" (i.e. it emulates the DOS SB stuff).

Why? The Santa Cruz (their latest card) seems good from the
reviews I've read.

You can buy a soundcard made by Korg (the Oasys) that costs
$2000+. :)

If you want to spend that much money, I'd recommend the M Audio
(a "sub-brand" of Midiman) Delta 66, it has digital out as well as
several other ports, and you can get it for about $279. It has no
MIDI port though.

Those companies aren't really in the computer market, it's a whole
different type of thing, really. Most companies that make good
audio stuff only make really high-end soundcards anyway (e.g. the
aforementioned Korg card)

I use the Sharp MS-722 all day long and it's the best unit I bought since

The sharp MS-722 is very robust, very strong and a great look ! (for guys,

This unit is full fonctional, all buttons on front pannel, slide-in MD and
you can put this unit in your pocket easily... I strongly recommand you this

The High End Binaurals are as good as you can get in a small microphone
set, but admittedly, they are expensive. An excellent match for the
-722 and your applications (both technically and at their price points)
is the Core Sound Binaural microphone set with the switchable bass
roll-off filter.

If budget is really tight, you might find that the Low Cost Binaural mic
set will do the job.

We offer a 30-day trial, so you can try any of them and then exchange or
return them if they don't meet your needs.

I hope this helps!

Subject: MD: Questions about Sharp MDMT15VQ

The mercata.com site lists this: "Sharp Portable MiniDisc
Player/Recorder w/MP3 Adapter and Software, MDMT15VQ," and goes on to say it
features the ability to record/play mp3's, saying:

"The advanced technology that allows this is the Voquette NetLink
adapter and Media Manager software. Just connect the adapter between the
MiniDisc player/recorder and your computer, then use the Media Manager
software to manually or automatically record music, information and news
from your computer to your MiniDiscs"

I already have written Mercata to complain that in a world of at least
two major computer platforms, you CAN'T just say "your computer" and have it
mean anything. Does someone on the list know if the Voquette link and the
Media Manager software is PC-only?

Also, the Sharp Electronics web site listing for this device says
nothing at all about Voquette link, Media Manager or mp3s. Does anyone know
if this is a bundle that Sharp is offering, or is this likely some sort of
special Mercata bundle?

Lastly, as regards a unit such as this, isn't the concept of "recording"
mp3's a little misleading? To me that would suggest that a signal could be
sent into the device (digital or analog) and that the device would
convert/record it to become an mp3. What I suspect is the case is that the
device can "store" (not record, literally) an mp3 file and play it back. Am
I being picky? And even if so, am I correct?

Thanks much,

Richard Huggins

MD: What is a MD Port ?

2000-10-04 Thread Peter Forest

What is a MD Port ?

MD Port AN1 - PC to Minidisc Analog Recording Kit

PC Audio to Minidisc ? Easy. MD Port AN1 : PC straight to Minidisc !

The MD Port AN1 is an advanced USB interface kit for recording tracks ripped
from CD's, or music files downloaded from the internet, to Minidisc.

Being the first of it's kind in the world, the AN1:

-is the perfect way to record MP3 or other computer audio to minidisc.
-incorporates precision audio technologie for superior fidelity.
-has an easy to install and simple to use USB interface.
-works seamlessly with all minidisc recorders.
-included the full version of Music Match Jukebox Plus ripping and encoding
software.

The MD Port AN1 Recording kit brings the world of MP3 and Internet audio to
minidisc, allowing Minidisc customers to enjoy all their computer based
music on the move.

It's an exciting advance that opens up minidisc as a whole new standard for
recording MP3 files.

RECORD TO MINIDISC IN 3 EASY STEPS !

1- Download / Rip

The AN1 comes with MusicMatch Jukebox Plus, a powerful software program that
lets you find and play internet audio on your computer. Music Matc Jukebox
Plus also lets you rip and encode tracks from any music CD to create your
own fantastic sounding MP3s. Combined with the AN1, it turns your computer
into a powerful Minidisc Recording studio.

2- Connect

The AN1 operates simply by plugging into a USB port. That's all there is to
do. No need to open the computer, or even worry about loading any special
software. After a few simple steps in Windows, the AN1 is ready to record.

3- Record

The AN1 has been specifically engineered to provide a high fidelity link
between PCs and Minidisc recorders. It delivers exceptional audio
performance by incorporating a unique design that takes audio rendering
outside the noisy internal computer environment. What's more, you don't have
to rely on your system's old soundcard, because the AN1 does all the
necessary work by itself.

Only available by now for PC interface

Minimum requirement : Microsoft Windows 98 or 2000 / Primary USB Port

Kheops Minidisc is an official Distributor of the MD Port AN1 and MD Port

MD: Sharp MS-722 for $138 + shipping at mercata.com

2000-10-03 Thread Peter Forest

Mercata.com give $100 to any new customer with them...

This is not really a $100, it's 20% of the value of the products you want to
pay. So the max you can save is 20% of what you want to buy from them. Also,
how mercata works is really simple, it's a power buy ! More people buy, less
each buyer will pay ! You will not save so much, maybe a few bucks, but it's
cool anyway because they already have very low price ! Especially with your
first free $100 from them !

So anyway, if you want to buy a Sharp MS-722 for $138 + shipping charge,
this is the price you will pay after the 20% of mercata... I think they ship
to USA and Canada too...

their website : www.mercata.com

the price announce is $173 - 20% = $138. Shipping is between $15 and $30 and
depends where you're located from them.

By the way, I have nothing to do with Mercata, I only want to help MD List
member to get the best deal for a MD unit.

RE: MD: Sharp and Blaupunkt questions.

2000-10-01 Thread Peter Forest

I used to have a Sharp MS-702 too... and I had so many problem with it !

Since I bought it at Circuit City and they have a great service they did a
exchange for me at that time for a Sony MZ-R37 no charge (this unit was more
expensive at this time).

However, if you're unit is not on warranty it will cost you about $50-$75 to
repair it and it will takes about 1-3 months for repair. Honestly, the
MS-702 is a piece of Crap ! Sharp made it fast and after thinking about it,
release the MS-722, the improve version of the MS-702. There was many
problems with their MS-702 !!! If I were you, I just bought a brand new
MS-722 for $170 at etown or even less at mercata and you will be done !

It's only an opinion...

I have a 702 that is a non-factory refurb (stupid I know) and now doesn't
work. It won't even read the TOC anymore (TOC ERR A).
I'd like to get it repaired, but I need to know about how much sharp will

Also, while I have your attention, does anyone have any experience/notes

Any input will be appreciated.

RE: MD: Recommend Portable

2000-09-29 Thread Peter Forest

Basically, with the use you want to do with your MD recorder, my first
suggestion is the Sharp MS-722. This is the advantage of this unit :

- Very robust and solid.
- Slide-In door for Minidisc (easy to enter and remove minidiscs)
- Rechargeable battery include (6-10 hours autonomy, 3 hrs to charge)
- Battery case for 1 AA battery supplied (for a couple hour more)
- Very intuitive and easy to use, all button are on top of the unit and
button are big so easy to use.
- Analog and digital line input (stereo jack)
- Analog output (only stereo jack for headphone, no line out)
- Stereo/Mono mic input (stereo jack)
- Line lever adjustement, really easy to adjust and very visual screen
- Manually fade only
- Always record at the end of the disc but you can easily move, erase,
divide and edit each recorded part of the minidisc. If you have a 2
minutes sound at the end and you want it in the middle, simply move it, and
VOILA ! It's done !
- The rechargeable battery include is better than AA battery and it's a
lithium battery; intelligent battery that only charge what it needs. May
last 1-2 years easily. With the battery case you can add one more AA battery
for longer recording or playing.
- The unit charge by itself when the AC adaptor is plug in the wall and when
the unit is on Stop Mode.
- Remote control provided with the unit. Everything is allowed except
recording option with the remote. The remote is illuminated. However, if you
let the unit in rec/pause, you will be able to use the remote for the other
option (play and pause to stop and go the recording).

You can buy this unit from Etown (www.etown.com) or Mercata
(www.mercata.com). The price is really good and low (about $170 or even less
sometimes).

If you absolutely want a line out (not only a headphones output), you will
maybe prefer for the same (or so) amount, this unit from Sony : MZR-37.
However, be careful when purchase this unit and look for all accessories.
Sometimes it's really cheap when you look at it but there is a lot of extra
to pay after and you don't really save at all... What I dislike of the
MZR-37 Sony Units is : Clam Shell Door (very weak and fragile for me...) and
also the button are small and not so easy to use. However, the remote is
very useful (i'm not quite sure if it is illuminated).

If you have any question, simply send me an email : [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Peter - www.kheopsminidisc.com

INPUTS
* analog line level inputs ( RCA)?
* stereo mic / binaural mic input
* line level adjustment  OUTPUTS
* stereo line out ( adapt to RCA for tape deck etc)
RECORD
* be able to erase in the field, and re-record
* fade desirable, not required
POWER
* AA backup aux pack, or better yeta unit that will accept AA
alkalines as a primary power source if necessary.
REMOTE
easy to use- illuminated

Does such a unit exist and where would you recommend I purchase one?
Thankyou for your help. Mark Dottle

This is some information, I hope this will help !

MD-Port DG1 and AN1 compatibility information

The MD-Port AN1 is compatible and works with all MD recorders regardless of
model or brand.

Due to the recording mechanisms of some MD recorders, the MD-Port DG1 is
known not to be compatible with the units from Sharp, JVC, or the Sony MZ-R3
and MZR-50. It may also not function with home recording MD decks.

Xitel's MD-Port DG1 has been tested and is compatible with Sony MZ-R37,
MZ-R55, MZR-70, MZ-R90, and MZ-R91 recorders.
The DG1 may be compatible with other brands or models, however they have not
been tested and Xitel therefore cannot guarantee all function will be
supported.

MD-PORT DG1

Xitel's MD-Port DG1 is the ultimate way to digitally record tracks ripped
from CDs or music files downloaded from the Internet to Minidisc. It comes
with MusicMatch Jukebox Plus - a powerful program for ripping, encoding, and
playing all your MP3 files.

The DG1 works simply by plugging into a USB port. After a few simple steps,
you'll be ready to record digitally through the optical output with studio
fidelity. Nothing sounds better!

The DG1 is not compatible with certain MiniDiscs recorders.

MD-PORT AN1

The MD-Port AN1 is an advanced USB interface that lets you record track
ripped from CD's, or music files - like MP3's - downloaded from the Internet
to MiniDiscs. It's designed for seamless use with
ALL MiniDisc recorders, and includes great software to rip, encode and make
your own compilations.

The AN1 operates simply by plugging into a USB port. After a few simple
steps in Windows, you'll be ready to record. There's no easier way to
liberate MP3's from your PC!

By the way, we are now distributor for Xitel so if you have any questions or
if you need any information, simply send us an email at :

RE: MD: Xitel Sound Card

2000-09-28 Thread Peter Forest

Do you have a link for this plug-in ? It could be useful...

However, for me, the nuance and effects of songs are really important for
me...

I have two MD Port here (the DG1 and AN1) I made some tests, and some blind
tests and the difference of sound is really hard to hear for MP3 music.

I prefer personally to keep original effect and nuances and change the
volume manually when I record a MD. So for me, this is a convincing element.

So, if you have any question for these Xitel MD Port, simply email me at
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

I heard a lot problems with the DG1 and nothing with the AN1. The AN1 is
more universal. The DG1 have some problem with timing (1 second late to
start with some units). However, I like these 2 units very much and will be
proud to sell them soon...

I used these units since a few month with my Sharp MS-722 and Sony MZR-37
and everything's perfect !

Regards,

Pierre.

I vaguely recall reading on this list about problems with the DG1 and the
MZ-R50. Unfortunately, I can't remember any specifics. Has anyone here
tried the DG1 with an MZ-R50? I'd rather not buy one if it won't work
with the only piece of MD equipment that I own.

I will admit that the price difference is a big advantage between the two,
however I have to disagree with the ability to adjust the recording level
as being a major selling point. I found a WinAmp plugin called
AudioStocker that automatically adjusts the output level so that
everything is equal between songs and within a song. Granted, this does
ruin certain effects in songs, like songs that have a very soft intro or
get progressively louder (Silent Lucidity comes to mind).

I don't find this to be a problem when I'm making a disc for use when I'm
walking or biking, but it would be a problem if I were making a disc where
I want to appreciate every nuance of the music.

RE: MD: Ignored

2000-09-28 Thread Peter Forest

It's not advertising from me...

It's only deals from other place I found for the MD Community...

If you don't want any message from me, it's ok but when I try to help the MD
Community I think it's right.

The 3 Messages :

1- Information on a Sharp Stereo System sold on Etown (we have nothing to do
with Etown). I gave the information to let all users and members be able to
buy this unit for a very good price.

2- Information on a portable recorder player Sharp MS-722 sold on Etown.
(again we have nothing to do with Etown, they don't pay me, it was only
Information Purpose)

These 2 messages were sent because we received a message to promote the Sony
MZR-37 from Buy.com and yesterday, I told the truth about this deal... We
also receive from the MD Community Page the information for the MZR-37 unit
available on Mercata.com for only $127 (less 20% if you're new member). I
thought it was a good idea to let our community know about great price and
deal over the internet (NOT FROM ME !)

3- Someone ask some question about the Xitel MD Port. I gave the information
and since we will sell these MD Port real soon, I just told everyone that we
wil have them in stock for the same price or lower since our customers will
be able to use coupons and have free shipping. This was not a message to
advertise, but first to bring help to a user from this list.

So, Maybe Chris, you will never see this message, but if you have a problem
with me, even when I don't advertise my store, I think you did the good
choice, simply delete my messages...

I did this only to HELP... And there was no advertising or coupons or SPAM
(as some of your friend and yourself used to say all the time). By the way,
do you know what is really a spam on this list ? It's all the messages that
everyone send to repeat the same thing ! And a lot of time, you're complety
false... Like this time !

Before write wrong accusations or facts against someone, please verify...

Regards.

MD: Xitel Sound Card

2000-09-28 Thread Peter Forest

Xitel sell now 2 different kind of MD Port. (by the way, we gonna sell their
2 MD Port soon on our 2 website for very low price...). There is an Analog
one (the AN1) and an digital one (DG1) the retail price is about $65 for the
AN1 and $95 for the DG1.

In fact, there is an USB output from your computer, a converter in the
middle who transfer the information (1 and 0) into an optical output or an
anolog output (stereo jack). I've tried both of those and honestly there is
not a big difference of sound quality with THESE 2 MD port. I have tried a
lot of analog sound card and there was a big sound difference. I can't tell
why the sound is so good with the AN1 but there is so many advantage and not
so much sound difference.

The big advantage when recording MP3 is because you can adjust the recording
volume (MP3 files are very various, like CD of course...). So, now I can do
any music mix I want from MP3 to MD with an equal sound everytime... Also
the very big advantage is the difference of price (nearly $30 difference
between each other).

In a week or two, we gonna have these 2 MD Port in stock and we will sell
them for $60 for the AN1 (shipping included) and $90 for the DG1 (shipping
also included). And for those who will use some Buy It Online Coupons, you
will be able to save another $10 to $15 more...

For your problem with the Xitel MD Port DG1. I have a few question for
you... Did you have more than one sound card in your computer ? If you have
an integrated sound card (usually all Compaq Presario has their integrated
sound card) and another one, sometimes, there is some conflicts when adding
an USB music port. 2 solution possible : first try to disable the sound card
in the control setting. If this doesn't work, simply remove the second sound
card. and use your integrated sound card. If you don't have 2 sound card,
look in your system setting and see if there is some conflict with your USB
port and other components of your computer. If so, try to manage this by
disable or remove some components when using your MD port.

If you have any other question, please contact me by email at :
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

Regards,

Pierre Forest.

i just bought a XITEL MD port DG1. it seems to hang my computer
(a compaq presario 5460) around every 45 minutes of play, so i have to
reboot.
does anyone else have this problem? i also have a cable modem running on my
other USB port, does that have anything to do with it?

when it works though, the MD port transfers to my MD flawlessly.. ive never
heard my MP3's sound so good! im never going back to an analog line out!

MD: Etown Sharp MS-722 : $169.50

2000-09-28 Thread Peter Forest

There is a better deal on internet for a recorder player instead of the Sony
MZ-R37 (at $179 with the minimal accessories only !). Yes, there is a very
good deal on Etown (www.etown.com). I have nothing to do with this company,
I simply want to let you know that you can purchase this great unit for only
$169.50 with Free Shipping from them...

Etown offer a great service, they ship fast and are very reliable... I
purchase my Sharp MS-722 from them. The exact URL for this unit is :

http://www.etown.com/categories/product_profile.jhtml?fromIDA=&bodyinclude=p
artner&productID=409&categoryID=39&manufacturerID=109#mainbody

But since, this unit is their best seller, you will be able also to find a
link on their main page (www.etown.com). There is also Mercata
(www.mercata.com) who offer this recorder/player for about $150 (with the
20% offer from them) but you must pay shipping charge so it's basically the
same price at the end. (I think that the etown's price is a bit lower...).

Below, you will be able to read more about this great Minidisc
Recorder/Player. When you buy it, it comes with a rechargeable battery, the
AC adaptor, the remote control, an optical cable, a RCA-stereo jack cable
and a carrying bag !

Hope this will help the newcomers who want a VERY GOOD minidisc
recorder/player ready to go...

Best Regards,

Peter Forest - www.kheopsminidisc.com ([EMAIL PROTECTED])

P.S. I don't work for Etown or Mercata. I'm not pay by them to advertise
their products and I'm not responsible if they change their products
informations, contents or price. I only try to help... (Believe it, or not
! ) See below for complete information about the Sharp MS-722...

Product Information

MiniDisc is characterized by ruggedness and portability, and Sharp's
MD-MS722 is one of the most rugged. It doesn't compete with Sony's MZ-R55 in
size, but brings a longer battery life and slot-in loading mechanism that
begins play as soon as a disc is inserted. Slot-in is to clamshell (the
typical MD loading scheme) as front-loading VCRs are to top loaders.
Compared to its little brother the MD-MS702, Sharp improved the buffer
memory to 40 seconds, and added a jog dial to ease the titling drudgery. The
722 won't skip in anything but an earthquake.

The 722 can perform any of the standard editing functions such as move,
combine, erase and divide. Its synchro-start recording allows one-touch CD
or MD copying or voice-activated recording through a microphone.

Unique to Sharp's recorders is the Character Stamp function, which can
simultaneously write titling information when copying from a prerecorded
source MD, so you don't have to title the copy yourself. The wired remote
can accept any pair of headphones thanks to a mini-jack connector. The
internal battery's life is very good for the category (10 hours play, 8
record), and can be augmented with an external battery case.

The MD-MS722 also includes an AD-M1DC optical digital cable, headphones, a
battery case, an analog connector cable, an AC adaptor/recharger, a carry
case, and a handstrap.

More information about this unit :

Product Information

Some machines do just about everything, but the compact systems category is
not where you'd generally look for something fitting that description.
However, Sharp's MDC2 is the shelf system jack of all trades.
Armed with CD, MD and tape players, this unit will let you rock to (or make
mixes from) everything but the kitchen sink. If that weren't enough, the
dual cassette deck incorporates full-logic controls, and both the CD player
and the MD player are three-disc changers. The disc changer can be
programmed for a 32-track sequence, while the MD player will allow up to 20
program selections. The full-function MD player features all the editing
commands you expect from MiniDisc, including divide, combine, erase, move
and title.

A 50-watt-per-channel stereo amplifier powers the two three-way, 6-ohm
speakers. A five-mode pre-programmed equalizer lets you customize your sound
according to the music you're playing. Removable speaker grilles let you
choose between seeing or not seeing the speaker cones and a full function
remote saves you the hassle of getting up to change the radio station.

If MD playback isn't essential, but the three-disc CD player makes your
heart swoon, check out Fisher'sDCSC60, which offers 10 more watts of power.

This is the description of the item sold by Buy.com...

As you can see, they don't provide the AC adaptor neither the remote control
and rechargeable batteries (all optional or non-related).

So count, a surcharge of $60 approx. for this unit. So in fact the real
price is about $240 US.

Have a nice day ! Hope this will help !

RE: MD: buy com R-37 $179US

2000-09-27 Thread Peter Forest

That's a good deal of course...

My friend bought one at this price last month... But be careful, this unit
is great but take a closer look to the accessories they provide with it.
The one that my friend receive for $179 had no rechargeable batteries
include, no AC adaptor, no remote control... There was only a cheap
headphone and a digital cable supply with the recorder player.

So, count a $15 for an AC adaptor (From Radio Shack), $8.00 each
rechargeable battery ($16 at all at Minidisco for 2 batteries), and about
$30 for the remote (only available for now on Sony Supplies Center; I don't
remember their 800 number, sorry...).

Maybe, if you're lucky, this time this Sony Unit will have more accessories
but just think and look carefully before doing this purchase...

Hope this will help some of us...

MD: Ban ???

2000-09-25 Thread Peter Forest

So you want to ban me ???

I don't really understand why...

There was several suggestions... Not only another mailing list...

Why I don't want another mailing list ?

1- We still have this mailing list... I don't want to force people to
subscribe to another one...

2- Kheops Minidisc has its own mailing list too, a lot of subscriber but
since several user of the MD List don't want to subscribe to several mailing
list, I understand why they prefer to stay with only one mailing list
instead of 2 or 3...

3- Like you said, some prefer the digest mode, some prefer to receive all
message. Personally I received them both. When I don't like a message, I
press delete and that's it, that's all... I don't do a big story with it !

I just read all the previous message since the last few days... There was a
few from me and a lot about THESE FAMOUS COUPONS !!! Half positive, Half
negative... So, I consider that 50% of member appreciate the coupons...

Beside this, I agree that my message were not quoted (like many in this list
by the way...)and were very long...

There was a great idea : write a small subject in the header : MD Sale
USA... A lot of people told it was a good idea... Also, most of the time, I
will only let a small note a the end of my message.

What do you think about this ???

Dear Dan

I can't argue with you about the large quantity of advertisement I sent in
the past...

Now, I have suggested some solutions, and I think that if I only put a link
on my signature it will be good too and I will only write message to help or
to answer to another message...

Just forget about a list with coupons on a website or something like this
because all the coupons I find on the Web (It take several hours of research
sometimes) are for a very little time... Sometimes only ONE DAY ! Imagine
the work to refresh a list everyday and update it each time...

So, when I will put a coupon in my signature it will be a RUSH coupon
(sometime it could be good for more than 2 days, but I can't guaranteed it !
It depends of Buy It Online Staff !)

If you find that my Minidisc Advertisement harass people, what about all
those message we received with OFF TOPIC SUBJECT like actors, signer or
anything else non regarding MD matters...

I think that it's better to post advertisement about MD than talk about
subject with no interest with MD, what do you think ???

Regards,

Peter.

But that doesn't help those of us on digest mode (probably a majority of
the overall subscribers), whose digests consist of a huge number of
"coupon" posts and advertisements.

Rick doesn't want to "ban" Peter's posts, and for those looking for
deals, I agree with Rick that they are useful. HOWEVER, Simon's idea is a
good one. Peter should set up his own "deals" list for those who want his
commercial postings. This isn't really the best forum for that, IMHO.

>There must be several posts a month about something for sale in the
>UK or Aust.

True, but Peter's posts are often several each *day*. It's nothing
against Peter, or "deals." It's the quantity.

>I noticed that it was only one person who complained.

Simon isn't the only one bothered, and there are people from the U.S.
bothered as well. Rick has heard other complaints about this issue. His
dilemma is how to let people get info on "deals" but not let the list get
clogged with commercial junk -- not an easy thing to resolve. I think
Simon's idea was a good one. Either Peter or Rick should set up a "deals"
list. I don't think Peter's rationale that "people don't want to get info
from different sources" flies -- for those who want to be on the deals
list, it's the same amount of email. For those that don't, they don't
have to be bombarded by the latest "hurry!" coupon every day (or every
few hours, it seems ;-)).

>I have never heard any one from the US complain about all of the
>posts from other countries. Until all of the countries in the free
>world realize that we now live in a Global economy, we are going to
>be stuck with things like this happening.

It has nothing to do with country of origin for me. It has to do with the
ratio of commercial/non-commercial posts increasing dramatically since
Peter starting posting. There are times I've simply deleted the digest
without reading it because I can see from the message summary that it's
mostly ads or talk about ads. I'm sure other people do this, as well.
When that starts happening and more people stop reading the list digest,
the quality of the list goes *way* down. So it's not just to appease
people who are complaining -- it's to keep the quality of the list high.

Doesn't work because the majority of subscribers read the digest version

Excellent, but it needs to go a little farther: if the sale is restricted
geographically (like the buyitonline.com coupons), then the subject should
also have an indication of that. Then people interested only in products
that they are able to buy -- not an unreasonable position -- can tell when
a sale is world-wide, when it includes their country, or when it does not
include their country.

Any thought go into that, or is it a generic Yank "Rest of the world? We
ARE the world!" comment? :-) I said I was guessing, and I notice a lot of
non-US email addresses. Remember too that .com/.org/.net don't belong to
the US - people living in many other countries use them too (in fact, the
MD-L is hosted at the London-based amulation.com). To all these non-US
people, posts about coupons are useless if they couldn't use them anyway.

It was a _suggestion_ for Peter to sort out a method that would be better
for all parties - those on the MD-L that don't want to get coupon mailings
every other day won't, those that want them do. It wasn't meant to be read
as an intention of censorship - the list is unmoderated and so it should
stay. Doing what you suggest (filtering by address) _would_ mean that many
people stop reading what Peter has to say, which would be a shame.

>I disagree and encourage Peter to let us know when there are real super

So why not find out via a separate list or just by going to his coupon page?

>that, I
>am sick and tired of hearing about all of the specials that they are

>Riches or what ever it is called, in the UK.

I'll explain the reasons for my "complaint" (well, more of an informal
suggestion to change something):

- The number of coupon posts has gone up significantly - over the last 2
weeks, there's been one every other day.

- These coupons are from, and for, a commercial company that Peter is
financially involved with (at least, that's what I infer from him having a
"store" there), which goes against the non-commercial nature of lists like
this.

It's pretty simple - Peter sends his coupons mails to as many people as
possible, some of them buy stuff from him via the coupons, he makes
money. When a list member points out a particularly good deal on
something, they're not profiting from it. Incidentally, the last time
Richer Sounds was mentioned on the MD-l was back in July, and that was a
request for comments on a Pioneer unit that they were selling (and that's
sold worldwide). The last post about an offer they were doing was 7th June.
There's also a separate UK MD list, where such country-specific stuff gets
discussed.

As I've said to Peter before - the best way to prom

Peter,

Not meaning to offend but please stop posting with coupons for some
US-based (and US-only) online shopping company. I'm just guessing here, but
the number of US-based list subscribers is probably lower than you think
and the number of those that actually care about the coupons will be
significantly lower. As someone else suggested, set up a separate list of
your own for those that _want_ to recieve your coupon mails and leave the
MD-L for actual MD discussion.

Your repeated commercial postings were just mildly irritating - I
understand that you're running an MD-based business and it's good that you
have such enthusiasm for the format, but acting like a buyitonline spam
machine is very annoying.

It'd be a shame if I filtered out all of your posts, you do also post good
on-topic stuff sometimes..

Larry responded to my post:

> Why don't you transfer your CD's to MD?

I am in the process of making compilation discs.
Right now I'm doing compilations of pop songs from
1964 - 1973 (by year). These are great because the
CDs always contain songs that I don't particularly
like. Have to get around to doing my Beatles and
Billy Joel compilations - although I can't think of a
Billy Joel song that I don't like.

I'll keep the CDs (or at least most of them) for
backup. I am going to put a few CDs on MD and then
get rid of the CDs (those discs that I rarely listen
to) in order to save space, but I can't see
transfering all 1700+ CDs to MD.

I do have a CDR on my computer, but I've never been
able to get it to work, and I have given up on it.

> I prefer slot in, but I always have this fear that
> some day I'm going to have an Md eaten.

I had the same fear when I was trying to decide what
MD to buy. Then along came the MT-15 with it low
price tag and I stopped worrying about the loading
mechanism.
I do find that the MT-15 is a pain though. Even when
I'm sitting in the house, I sometimes have difficulty
loading or removing the MD. Unless one is very
careful, the MD's shutter tends to get caught on the
little metal guides. Forget about doing that in the
car. What I often do when commuting is play an MD
until the end; then I unplug the MD unit and play a CD
or listen to the radio for the rest of the trip. That
way I don't have to crash the car while trying to mess
with loading the MD.

Why don't you transfer your CD's to MD? If you have a CD writer in your
computer, you can also make a copy of your CD and then sell the original
on eBay. Just a thought. With the discount coupons, you can get 80
minute MDs for less then $1.40 (save even more if you get 74 minute
MDs). The CDRs are only about fifty cents a piece.

I see your point, but it is getting harder and harder to find slot in
designs. I guess the clam shell design is probably cheaper to make.
Also, you can probably make a thinner unit using the clam shell design.
I prefer slot in, but I always have this fear that some day I'm going to
have an Md eaten.

This actually happened to me with the original Sony MZ-1. The slot in
mechanism in that unit is actual motorized. One time a disc went in,
but would not eject. It was under warranty, but it still took Sony
forever to get it back to me. When they finally did, it would not
record (I didn't have that problem when it was sent in!!).

It had to go back to Sony a second time. In all it took me about 2 and
a half months to finally get the unit back. But it worked from then
on. Too back you can't upgrade the MZ-1 to ATRAC 4 or more. It is a
large, heavy, but strong unit.

MD: CD to MD and $10 coupons...

2000-09-21 Thread Peter Forest

I used to have over 300 CDs last years... It was very annoying for me to
switch from MD to CD all the time so I decided to copy all my CD on MD... It
was a very long and hard job to do but it was also a big clean up since I
don't like all the songs on each CD !

I did 100 MD with my 300 CDs. Half of these CDs were from Columbia and BMG
music and the others from different stores... I took all those CDs, and
bring them to a used music store and they gave me from $3 to $5 each CDs.
All the others CDs, I use to sell them on Ebay, Yahoo and another CD service
on internet. I still have 30 CDs here but at least I made a lot of money
with those CDs and I have all my favorites songs on MDs too !!!

For the coupons now... Just a few words to tell you that Buy It Online
removed the $15 OFF coupons because they were loosing too much money with
them ! However, they just release a lot of $10 OFF any $30 order and I made
some $30 (even) minidisc packs... In a few days, sorry but I'm on vacation
now it's my wife birthday and I'm going with her in a nice small resort on a
small island where we will enjoy the beautiful nature and emerald water...
But after this small vacation, I will do some MD kits for $30 too !!! But
not, you can take advantage of the MD Pack for $30 ( I sell some at
lost...).

I'm really sorry for the $15 coupons, they were suppose to be available
until the end of the month but they removed it before unfortunately...

You can find some $10 OFF coupons at :

RE: MD: MD-Port DG1 and Sharp 722 or JVC XU-301BK

2000-09-21 Thread Peter Forest

Hi !

It's true that the DG1 it's not fully compatible with Sharp MS-722... It
seems that there is a signal lost for the first seconds...

I will sell on my website soon the DG1 and the AN1... It seems that there is
not really a big difference in the sound quality between the DG1 and the
AN1. What is great about the AN1 is that this port is 100% compatible with
any portable unit...

I strongly suggest you to wait until buy any of those MD port because we
will sell them very soon (in a week or two) and we will sell them at the
lowest price ever !

Hope this will help !

I have a Sharp 722 and am looking for a solution that will allow
me to record MP3 to either my Sharp 722 or JVC XU-301BK.

I've looked at the DG1, but it specifically lists those as
non-compatible units. Does anyone know what exactly is not
compatible? Will I not get track marks or something? Is anyone
successfully using either of these recorders with the MD-Port
DG1?

Thanks!

Same here..To date, have ordered 2 times with Minidisco..BOTH I have
been very happy with.

On one particular instance, was on vacation, on a small island on the west
coast of FloridaRan out of MDs while recording radio stations (one of my
hobbies when I go on vacation), the only MDs available on the island were 2
packs in one store for some ridiculously high price (in excess of $10 for
just 2 of them), and nothing pretty, just your basic domestic MD.Called
in my order to Minidisco for 10 Sony "Sparkling Red" MDs on a Tuesday, late
morning...Package from them (keep in mind, it was coming from clear across
the Continental US from where I was located) was waiting for me in the
'lobby' WEDNESDAY afternoon. All for less 'per disc' than if I'd driven
down the street to buy them...And rarer/nicer looking discs, to boot

Granted, your situation might be different, I'm not taking anything away at
all from your argument, but considering some of the other horror stories
I've
heard about other online retailers, they're really a class act (IMHO)

Also like the fact that you can call them on the phone, and ask questions to
a real life person.

Just my (very, very humble) $.02

They are kind person, honest and usually really fast !

Maybe you should call back and ask for the owner...

Maybe it was a new person from this company...

If I were them, what I should do is to simply send right away another exact

Subject: MD: Minidisco problems

I've just had a very poor experience with Minidisco, to wit:

1) They type the billing address on a label instead of the shipping
address (so they claim, I have no idea if this was the actual problem
with the address.)

2) They send out an order confirmation that *doesn't include a
reference number.* Had they emailed me a reference number, I would
have entered it immediately and discovered that it was going to the
wrong address before it left the dock in Oakland. The reference
number arrived almost a day after the order was shipped. The phone
droid doesn't know what happened, blames a computer glitch.

3) They are unable to reroute the package. Admittedly, UPS is a pain
in the ass to deal with--but they *chose* to ship via UPS because it
was (to paraphrase) the best choice for *them*, not necessarily for
customers. According to them, UPS refuses to reroute it until after
it's on the ground in DC on Monday--but it's scheduled for delivery
*that day*, which leaves Minidisco with three hours between 5am and
8am Eastern time to contact them. Will anyone at Minidisco actually
call them in the middle of the night from CA? I doubt it.

And nobody at Minidisco seems to care much that they've probably just
lost a customer.

RE: MD: new computer

2000-09-07 Thread Peter Forest

USB port is good but not absolutely necessary

Personally, I have a old 333 MHZ with a optical sound card from Aureal
(bought for only $50, I don't remember where sorry...) and with an optical
cable, I record all the songs I want from internet directly on my MS-722 (I
use Win Amp to play music files).

The sound is good and it's really easy...

My friend uses its 900 MHZ and it's Optical Sound Card inside its USB port
and it seems to be very great too !

Hope this will help...

Anyway, the speed of the computer is not really important to record music on
MD recorder. What is the most important thing is to have a fast internet
connection to download songs...

Peter.

etc Anything you might suggest is appreciated.

Also, if you happen to know of a good and inexpensive place to build a

RE: MD: minidisc.org domain name hitch

2000-08-30 Thread Peter Forest

Don't worry about this... We can all forget this kind of thing... I didn't
knew that Network Solution were so dragstic when we don't pay in time !

By the way, I don't know if this could be interesting for the mailing list,
but I just end this morning all the 3D picture of all the Blanks Minidisc I
sell (and pack).

They are in our 3D section of our Website :

http://www.kheopsminidisc.com/3D.htm

If you have time, you can check them out and tell me what do you think about
it...

Best Regards,

Pierre Forest.

P.S. I will receive some news about the $15 OFF on $25 ORDER this
afternoon... I will let you know...

MD: About our Special Price at Kheops Minidisc...

2000-08-29 Thread Peter Forest

I just want to let you know that the promotion that we run now for New
Customer, the price you pay, is less than the price I actually pay for the
minidisc...

The only reason you can take advantage of the promotion special price is
because Buy It Online offer this $10 OFF Coupon. Our company, alone, can't
afford a so good rebate. (I think that there is not many company that can
afford to sell less than they pay actually ! Except Big Store like Wal Mart,
Winn Dixie, K-Mart, Best Buy who can make money on other products to
compensate for their loss on some products).

I only want to tell you this because, of course, after this promotion we
will not be able to offer such good price only by ourself... Unless, of
course, if I can find out other big discount later... And don't worry, if
this occurs, you will be advise !

Also, unfortunately, this offer is for USA resident only... (Buy It Online
is only available now for US resident, soon they will sell in Canada and
maybe next year Worldwide...).

Have a nice day !

Pierre Forest.
