Re: MD: help! dropouts!!

2000-04-17 Thread Tony Keogh

Dunno but it sounds a bit like the "stuttering" problem I had with my Sony
520 recently. The discs which were recorded on the 520 played fine on
another MD player but on the 520 they stopped and started in a stuttering
manner and the timer stopped and started with them. The problem is
absolutely consistent on repeat plays of the "faulty" disc.

Opinions on md-I varied from dust to bad discs to laser misalignment to a
damaged laser... and through it in the bin. At first I suspected Maxell
discs but it happened on an Arita as well and it seemed too much of a
co-incidence. Brought it back into Richer Sounds here in Ireland who sent
it to Sony who cleaned it and sent it back today "no fault found"... it
remains to be seen. I'm pretty sure it's not the discs cos I filled the
balance of the disc, then deleted the offending section and re-recorded.. no
problem.

Dunno if that's any help... maybe it's just a bit of dust... you might be
lucky.

they can break and jam and they are awkward to open and close... least I

I'm sure some-one somewhere has done true scientific double-blind tests or

I've had problems with the plastic shutter Maxell's. They didn't record
properly and exhibited a "stuttering-like" effect as though the disc was
getting physically jammed and stopped spinning, then momentarily freed
itself and then jammed again and so-forth. The problem seemed to relate to
the discs since several other types of disc recorded fine subsequently.

Thanks for the comment David.

No, these were new discs out of the wrappers. I'm hoping you're right
about the discs. I've tried recording a few other discs since the problem
and they all seem ok fingers crossed.

MD: Sony MZ-R50, MZ-R55 - No more SCMSing around?

1999-11-17 Thread Tony Keogh

I'm thinking of buying an R50 to dub MD's from my Sony 520, cos I heard
somewhere that the R50 could be hacked to disable SCMS.

Is this true and how do you do it?

Does it apply to the R55 or any other portables?

Does it only (presumably) work if you record TO the R50 rather than from it?

And finally, what ATRAC version are the R50 and R55?

Many thanks.

Wholesale Connection. Shipping (to Indiana, anyway) is $20, for a grand
total of $239. The MDS-JE520 is last years model. In fact, for $249 plus
shipping, you can by the MDS-JE630 from Wholesale Connection, which I would
highly recommend. The 630 has the keyboard input for a PC keyboard, so you
can easily enter titles, and it has the S-Link connector, too.

MD: Useless MD-Data drive

1999-08-01 Thread Tony Keogh

This may be a daft question but if you put an audio MD into a data MD drive,
will it read it?

If so, can you transfer audio tracks from your data drive
to your PC hard disk? This would be useful for backup purposes - and for
trading (tracks as email attachments, or on streamer tapes).

I don't suppose anyone has ever come across a PC version of the ATRAC
decoder? ...or encoder for that matter? (I just know someone is going to
say "Yes...they call it MP3").

I take it you're not actually playing back MP3's from an MD? Do I =
understand that you're calculating the equivalent space required to =
store a certain duration of music on MD (in ATRAC compression - which =
would you agree is superior quality to MP3 @ 160kb/s?) compared to the =
computer disk space required to store the same music at 160kb/s MP3 =
compression?

Looking at it another way, AFAIK the actual data storage capacity of an =
MD is ~170Mb. Comparing this to your figures, theoretically it would be =
possible to store nearly twice the standard 74min of music on an MD at a =
"160 kb/s" quality - much more at lower qualities. =20

Be careful. It may only copy from pre-recorded MD's. Bring a (recorded)
recordable MD to the store with you and ask for a demo before buying. If it
works, let us know!
