A. They merely mention the aleged high quality of the DAC (which is in fact
by far superior to the ultra crappy DACs found on their previous generation
cards, AWE32/64 etc.), for the purpose of playback through the analog output
of the card, not as a feature which has anything to do with digital
recording.

B. When in doubt, connect the digital output of the card to it's digital
input and play+record an mp3 file, then use winamp or whatever to decode the
original mp3 file into a standard linear PCM wav file and run a bit-by-bit
comparison of the recorded and the decoded wav files using one of many
shareware utils found on the net with that capability.

C. Do let us know if your finding are other than the expected (i.e. a
perfect match).

A. S/PDIF is the format of the audio data being transmitted (Sony/Philips
Digital Interface Format).

B. TOSlink (Toshiba Link) is a connection type for a physical medium
(optical) which may be used to transfer the above mentioned data (other
mediums include coax cables etc.)

C. What you need is a digital output from the Z90 (you'll have to check that
for yourself), if such an output exists it's probabely optical.

D. You need a soundcard with a digital input (SB Live/Value, Hoontech's ST
series etc.), and make sure the bracket on the card has the desired digital
connection (either optical or RCA(coax)). If you have the Live/Value you can
get Hoontech I/O board III for about 35$ which has both optical and RCA
input and output. (www.hoontech.com)

E. Then you record the audio stream from the MD using the sound card
DIGITALY to a standard PCM encoded file on your hard drive (.wav), after
which you're ready to burn it on a CDR in the standard CD-Audio format, thus
the whole proccess is done digitaly and the only source for audio quality
degredation is the ATRAC compression algorithm which is used to store the
audio data on the MD.

Won't work!!! You can use the digital output on your cdrom drive to output
the CD-Audio data digitally and then convert it for transmission over
optical medium. However MP3 files are being decoded by your cpu using
software and then the PCM data stream is fed to your soundcard, meaning you
need a sound card with a digital output to do that (SB Live/Value series,
HoonTech's ST series etc.)

So true, I had to buy the very same kit here in Israel...

It really depends on what type of digital output you've got on your sound
card. If it's a Creative SB Live/Value you should get Hoontech's
(www.hoontech.com) digital I/O II (19$). If it's a standard 2 pin S/PDIF,
which outputs TTL signal you can get a cheap TOSlink transmition module from
Toshiba (TOTX173), Sharp (GP1F31T) and other major manufacturers and make
the connection yourself.

MD: Should I buy????

1999-09-30 Thread Ze'ev Maor

I'm planning on buying the Sony MZ-R37, however I've a lot lately about Sony
releasing a high density MD format (650MB), is this true?? I'd hate buying a
new MD just to find out a few weeks later of a new replacing format...

What about the SPDIF onboard the SB-Live-Value, is it TTL?? Can I hook the
Sharp GP1F32T TOSlink module directly to it??

MD: Sony MZ-R37

1999-09-29 Thread Ze'ev Maor

Does anyone know what version of ATRAC the above mentioned drive uses??

Also, does anyone know whether the SPDIF output port onboard the AWE64
outputs a TTL or a coax signal??
