Re: MD: A question...

2001-01-28 Thread Jeanmougin

At the beginning of MD, Sony sold a portable recorder with digital
optical out. Nowaday, the only equipments that have digital out capacity are
MD decks. They very often have optical out but the high-end decks have
TOSLink and S/PDIF.
Concerning me, the only equipment with digital out I own is a Sony JE 530
(excellent deck) that has one optical out only.

Re: MD: MDLP- makes a good thing better!

2000-12-08 Thread Jeanmougin

In the normal (SP) mode, you record 60, 74 and 80 minutes of stereo music. You
also have a LP mode that doubles the record capacity but the sound is monaural
not stereo.
New MD products have normal mode, mono LP mode and MDLP. MDLP consists in two
new modes: recordind durationx2 and x4 in STEREO!
The "normal" or SP mode encodes music at 292 kbp/s. If you want to increase the
recording time, your data must be more compressed. In LP2, data is encoded at
131 kbp/s. In LP4, at 66 kbp/s. You notice that LP2 isn't exactly the half of
SP (292/2=146) and LP4 isn't the 1/4 of SP (292/4=73).
The remaining bytes are used to allow backward compatibility. Non-MDLP products
won't read MDLP tracks but will be able to edit them.

In SP mode, you record in true stereo at 292 kbp/s= near-CD quality (maybe more
but it's another debate).
In LP2, you still record in stereo at 131 kbp/s = loss of quality
In LP4, you record at 66 kbp/s in JOINT-STEREO. First, your bitrate is very low
(encode a song in MP3 format at this bitrate and listen). Two, this is
joint-stereo. To gain place, LP4 searches for similarities in the stereo
channels and encode them in one step. AS a result, you will have a bad sound
due to a big compression (66 kbp/s) and joint-stereo (the channels are mixed
together).

Re: MD: Which stereo system (with integrated minidisc) should I buy?

2000-11-09 Thread Jeanmougin

there are a lot of products. You'd better have a look at
http://www.minidisc.org. Look for "Equipment browser" on the left column.
Robin, 50 Watts is already very powerful except if u want to sonorize a
night-club or something like that.
Your optical out, you want it on the CD player or on the CD recorder. If you
take a stereo system, you have great chances to have your optical out on the CD
player (maybe that's what you're looking for). If you already own an amplifier,
look for a good cd deck with analog and digital out (coaxial or optical) and a
md deck with digital I/O.
Personnally, I've been looking for a stereo system like you. But finally, I
bought a Sony MD deck that is great. It's the MDS-JE530, it has coaxial,
optical and analog in and analog and optical out. I plugged little speakers on
the PHONES out with an adapter and it's great!
Moreover, I make a lot of analog recordings so I can make digital copies of
them.

when we talk about "digital" or "analog" recording , we talk about the method
to transfer the music. Digital---> S/PDIF (coaxial cable) and TosLink
(optical)
Analog---> analog cable (RCA or mini-jack)

Whatever type of cable you use, the music will be digitally recorded on the
disc. The only difference is that when you use digital cables, you do not
pass through digital/analog then analog digital conversion hence less
artifacts. When you record with analog cable, you pass through D/A-A/D
conversion. But nowadays, analogue recordings are excellent ( I've made a lot
of them cause they have the advantage to allow a second-generation digital
copy (or more but in this case you need a scms stripper).

OK. So, SCMS strippers don't remove SCMS. They change the SCMS status to pass-by
the interdiction.
If I play a digitally recorded MD on a deck and I use a SCMS stripper between
the optical out of the deck
and the optical in of a recorder, I'll pass-by the SCMS interdiction. But what

MD: SCMS

2000-09-02 Thread jeanmougin

When you make a copy of a CD with optical cable, SCMS is implemented on
the MD. The copy bit 10 is written and prevents a second generation
digital copy. But is it the MD recorder that puts SCMS protection on the
disc or does the MD recorder only write the copy bit of the source?
In other words, is it the digital out of a deck (CD, MD) that sends the
SCMS status or is it the MD recorder that writes the SCMS status during
recording?

MD: track marks problem linked with a digital recording

2000-06-07 Thread jeanmougin

Some days ago, I made a digital copy of the Corrs MTV Unplugged album. I

noticed that the total recorded time on MD was inferior to the total
time of the CD. When I played the MD, I noticed that a lot of the tracks

were amputed of 1 second or 2. The result is that it's quite unpleasant
to listen cause it is a live concert. When you listen to the CD, there's

no interruption in the disc (especially between the songs where you hear

the audience). On the MD, at the end of some tracks, you can hear the
audience but it's suddenly cut by the beginning of the new track.

To solve this problem, I decided to make an analog copy. Cause I use
sync-rec and due to the fact that there's no interrution in sound, I had

a 64 min 12 sec long track. Then I put the track marks manually (very
easy with jog wheel of the Sharp 722).

Is there a solution to make a digital recording without track marks?

Re: MD: A Reason not to Buy Sharp 722?

I'm the happy owner of a Sharp 722 and I must say that's a very good unit. Ok,
compared to the Sony R50 I also own, it's less beautiful. But for the rest, it
is very good.
- It's bought with TOSLink optical cable AND a RCA-stereo mini plug cable.
- You have a slot-in mechanism that is more robust than clamshell.
- You have a jog dial very useful for titling, choosing edit functions, browsing
between the tracks, etc...
- It's bought with a RCA cable and an optical cable.
- You have a good autonomy with the rechargeable battery.
- The sound quality is very good and there are 3 levels of basses.
- You can change the recording volume during recording (very useful for
recording concerts or MP3s on your computer).
- The best feature IMHO is that you have recording synchronization for all
inputs (optical, line, microphone)!

There's just a minor drawback: there's no separate headphones/line out !!! :(
That's why I use my Sony MZ-R50 when I play some music through speakers or in
the car with a cassette adapter !!! :)

But don't hesitate to buy the Sharp MD-MS722 !

MD: Track marks problems linked with digital optical recording

2000-05-31 Thread jeanmougin

Re: MD: MD to MP3? what programs?

2000-05-24 Thread Jeanmougin

As a Macintosh user, I found a little program called Coaster at
http://www.download.com. You can record with the line input of your
computer you plugged to the line-out of your MD recorder. I just had to
set the line-in level to avoid clipping.
When I finish, the file is saved in AIFF. After that, it's possible to
encode it in MP3.
This is how I've been able to make a MP3 of Final Fantasy Irish jig.

Re: MD: portable MD with mic recording?

2000-05-22 Thread Jeanmougin

All the portables have stereo microphone inputs but the majority of mics are
powered with low voltage. The consequence is that if you plug them to the mic
input, you will have to raise the recording volume and, in that case, you will have
a backgroung noise (caused by the mic input). So, you'd better use mics with a
battery box that allows mics to be plugged to line input (less, less noisy). For
more details, go at www.soundprofessionnals.com .

Re: MD: T Mark

2000-05-17 Thread Jeanmougin

I think this the default setting. There must have a silence of 2 or 3 seconds
between two tracks and when I say silence, it means that the vu-meter must
nothing. At the end of a track, you may have the mpression that there s silence
but there's still a little entry level. The problem with LP (are LP vinyl
discs?) is there's always a little parasite noises caused by the sapphire on
the disc.
It seems that you have no other solution than putting the track marks manually.

You have to use your rechargeable battery. For the external battery case and

MD: Sharp 722's battery life

2000-05-16 Thread Jeanmougin

I've got a Sharp 722. It is said to have an autonomy of about ten hours
in plays mode and 8 when you record. But I have the impression that the
real autonomy is inferior to what is claimed by Sharp. How do they
measure the autonomy? At which volume and which bass level (0, 1, 2, 3)?
I always listen music at volume 8 and bass level 3?
So, is it 10 hours of playback maximum or is my battery to be changed?

why a CD with all your music. I prefer to have one or several CDs for every

MD: Higher capacity MDs possible?

60 minutes MD spins at 1,4 m/s linear.
74 minutes MD spins at 1,2 m/s linear.

So, is it possible to make MD with a groove as thin as MD 80's but with
a slower linear speed to increase the recording capacity (why not MD 90

You're right. The man uses a mz-r30 to record the conversation from the

employed to do it: it is a laser microphone. Very compact, stealth, no
