MD: Better Analog? (Was: Re: Digital Conversion)

I'd really like to see our technology advances used to record in an analog medium. You would think we'd eventually stop trying to represent something analog with a digital approximation. Hopefully we'll see some of this in the future, but who knows. SACD is *sort of* like analog in that it samples durations, but it still uses a number to approximate a waveform. It's by far the digital recording method that can come closest to representing a square wave. If we applied our advances to recording to an analog medium with the permanent-ness of digital medium we could all be happy with the sound if not the bandwidth required to store it. I've been using MD for just shy of 3 years, and I'm actually finding myself considering stopping using it. I was keen on MP3 for a while, but I began to hear the compression artifacts all the time. I can't stand it, now. Lately I've been finding myself listening to CDs instead of MD (even in the car) because I perceive that I hear differences. MD's ability to do mix recordings will probably mean I don't give it up until there's a suitably convenient alternative that doesn't throw away data. I just hope my friends with tube amps and audiophile equipment don't get me buying vinyl. :) -matt -- matthew c. mead mmead (at at at) goof (dot dot dot) com (you know what to do to email me) http://www.goof.com/~mmead/ - To stop getting this list send a message containing just the word "unsubscribe" to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I bought a set of digital speakers last night (which I may return) and played some games with them turned on. I noticed some clicks/pops every once in a while when I was playing, so I think this is a computer issue. At any rate, I may try detuning the video card some to see if that helps. After a little research, there appear to be some issues with the SB Live!. I'm going to try to work through them separately. Thanks again. -matt -- matthew c. mead [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.goof.com/~mmead/ - To stop getting this list send a message containing just the word "unsubscribe" to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
MD: clicks in recorded MP3s
Hopefully someone has some experience and can help me. I looked around, and it appears the Sharp MD-X5 has the same ATRAC version as the portable Sharp MD-MS722. I decided that it was probably ok to use the mini system to record MP3's with, and hooked it to the SPDIF output of my SB Live 5.1 X-Gamer. At any rate, mostly, things sound fine. However, every once in a while, I'll get a click in the recording. Re-recording the song can end up removing it in most cases, assuming a click doesn't show up elsewhere. I used to record with an analog connection to my MD-MS722, and mostly the digital recordings I'm now making sound better than the analog ones I used to, except for these clicks. The clicks are obviously not in the original MP3s, as they aren't output every time the MP3s are played. My guess is that the process of the soundcard sampling up the 44.1Khz source to 48Khz, and the MD-X5 downsampling the 48Khz to 44.1Khz for recording is from time to time introducing some little glitches/pops/clicks. Has anyone else noticed this phenomenon? If so, were you able to cure it in any way? MD: noise-cancelling headphones

MD: MD-Port DG1 and Sharp 722 or JVC XU-301BK
I have a Sharp 722 and am looking for a solution that will allow me to record MP3 to either my Sharp 722 or JVC XU-301BK. I've looked at the DG1, but it specifically lists those as non-compatible units. Does anyone know what exactly is not compatible? Will I not get track marks or something? Is anyone successfully using either of these recorders with the MD-Port DG1? A CD-DA is a standard audio CD. Even a copy > created on a computer of the original should be just as good. You are not > dealing with compression here. Just transferring files. If the digital audio on a CD were stored digitally, you would be just transferring files. Rather, the CDDA is stored with an RF encoded carrier wave on the disc. In other words, it's stored in analog. Different transports will come up with slightly different sets of CDDA after reading it. -matt -- matthew c. mead [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.goof.com/~mmead/ - To stop getting this list send a message containing just the word "unsubscribe" to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
MD: Sharp 722 stops autoplay
I remember a while back reading somewhere that someone's Sharp 722 stopped autoplaying discs when they were inserted. MD: Aiwa AM-F70 blip at end of last track!?
I received an Aiwa AM-F70 for a christmas gift. Today I've listened to a couple of MDs all the way through, and after the last track on the disc, it seems to have a short, maybe 1/4 to 1/2 second blip of sound, after the track is done. I've never herad this on any of the MDs before. I recorded them all on a JVC XU-301BK, and it plays them back without that "blip" of sound. To confirm it was the Aiwa, however, I played back one MD that I made with the Aiwa, and it does the same thing. Pre-recorded MDs show the same symptom. Does anyone know if this is a known problem with using the playback function of this unit? Will this affect the recordings I make with it? Thanks in advance for any help or information! -matt -- matthew c. mead [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.goof.com/~mmead/ - To stop getting this list send a message containing just the word "unsubscribe" to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
