Might I suggest downloading EncSpot 
 to check the 
quality of your MP3 files beforehand.  Remember, it's 
not only the bitrate, but the encoder too :-)

Since I'm slowly gathering a sizeable collection of mp3's (given
the speed and my patience of a 31.2k link), can anyone suggest to
me an easy (and freeware) utility that will normalise individual
mp3 tracks to near the peak-level, and better yet let you chop off
unwanted silence and / or unwanted bits of stuff from the ends of
mp3 files.  The start & end chopping is mainly to trim silent bits
but sometimes bits of the following track or whatnot so a manual
start and end selector in addition to an auto ailence trimmer would
be ideal.  Hopefully I'm not too off-topic asking this here:-)

I'm not actually after a burning program, just a mp3 file tweaker
to clean 'em up and make 'em roughly the same level so I don't have
to adjust the recording level on my R3 for each track I copy.

hello-

this may have already been talked about here. or you may have your own
method that works for you. but this is how i'm copying my mp3s to minidisc
now, and i thought some of you might be interested.

what you'll need:
-a cd-writer
-Nero 5--the cd writing program. earlier version may work, but i don't
know.
-a player capable of playing cd-rw. i just use our dvd player. most recent
cd players can also play cd-rw specially the new portable phillips.

gather up your mp3s. put them in a directory. launch nero. select the
songs you want (you don't even need to convert to wave). in properties,
select the "normalize" filter. use the peak level method, and set level at
95%. this will ensure that all mp3s have around the same loudness level,
without clipping.

burn to the cd-rw. now. i have not been able to digitally record to
minidisc with cd-rw for some reason. cd-rs are no problem, but i've had to
go to analog with this, but it's no problem. i run everything through a
mixing board anyway to fatten up the sound a little. and since the
original source are mp3s, you're not dealing with cd-quality audio anyway.

set DT(S) (or it may be DS(T)) level on minidisc recorder to somewhere
between -50 and -60. turn auto-tracking on. start cd, start minidisc. 

set it, and forget it.

the minidisc will automatically track. you press a button only once, and
don't have to hang around for the session. if there's more than one person
listening to minidiscs, you can make multiple copies since you've got the
cd-rw master.

and you can erase the cd-rw and record on it again. and you get to avoid
your noisy sound card as well.
