RE: MD: Sony MZ-R900DPC in stock at etronics.com

2001-06-03 Thread 5703171

Picture on etronics.com is definitely incorrect, depicted model is
MZ-R700DPC, but specs and price are about R900.

Does anyone know if etronics delivers to Europe or not?
Or maybe some other online retailers?

And next question bothering me is
which model of Xitel MD-Port is included in DPC bundle, DG1 or DG2?

Price difference is about 20-30$ for models with PC-link compares to
models without, but if I'll buy it separately it will cost me around
90$ (~60$ + 30$-delivery).

Sony doesn't rebadge it. The DG-2 that came with my MZ-R900 (that I
purchased this morning) says "Xitel" on the back.

I think that color choice and combinations may be cultural thing. In the mid
80's one of the leading Japanese auto manufactures was offering their red cars
with only BROWN upholstery and interior trim.

Sports car red and brown are not generally an acceptable combination to Americans
(myself included). The following year they changed the interior to gray.

I'm not sure that there is any direct tie in to consumer electronics, but it is
interesting that you can't order a Japanese car with the options that you want.
These cars are assembled in Japan and shipped with various combinations of
accessories.

The dealer "hunts" his computer for a car with with closest options that you
want. Often you are stuck purchasing expensive options that you do not want in
order to get the ones you do.

Americans usually have a car "built" for them. You can usually choose the color
combinations and most of the options.

I wonder if a person purchasing a car in Japan has the same limitations as
Americans do when it comes to Japanese autos?

Until Apple commuter decided to offer color choices in their iMacs, when it came
to electronics you were pretty much stuck with the color that they came in. I
imagine having to stock computers in 6 different colors is a retailer's
nightmare!

After I'd seen Richard's and Rat's replies and thanked them, another came in
from Greg Schwabacher, the person who had originally told us about the
etronics.com offer. Thank you as well, Greg.

| The picture of the MZ-R900DPC shown at etronics.com is incorrect.
| First off, they show a Sony MZ-R700DPC. Secondly, the color
| in the etronics.com is incorrect. If you want to see what the
| MZ-R900DPC really looks like, go to planetminidisc.com or crutchfield.com.

Yes, I'd already seen it on (in retina-burn red) on their pages.

| The MZ-R900DPC's red color is brighter than the picture at etronics.com
| indicates, but it's not at all obnoxious.

"Obnoxious" is a stronger term than I'd use either, but it's still too much
for my tired old eyes.

| AFAIK red is the only color that the MZ-R900DPC (with PC-Link) is going to
| be available in. If you want a silver MZ-R900 AND a PC-Link device, you're
| going to have to buy them separately.

Red is certainly the only color so far, and if what I heard about other
colors later this summer doesn't come to pass, I'll have a decision to make.
The PC connector is unimportant to me, as I have another way to go from PC
to MD for the very rare occasions I want to do so; the reason I don't buy an
imported MZ-R900 in a milder color right now is the lack of local warranty
service.

So if no other color of MZ-R900 or MZ-R900DPC is to be sold in the US, I'll
have to select among (a) tolerating the color, (b) settling for a non-local
warranty, (c) buying an MDLP portable with fewer features, or (d) saving the
money and not buying an MDLP portable at all. One possible realization of
(c) is to get an MZ-E900 [if you classify recording as a feature] because the
MDS-JB940 that I already own can record MDLP and I have no portable MDLP
recording needs.

That "silver round shape" caught my attention, so I went to look, and
sure enough, that picture is of a MZ-R700, not an R900. (Note also the
LCD-less remote.) I have a R700 in blue, and I didn't think it existed
in red, brick-like or painfully vivid. The features list is definitely
the R900, though, i.e. dual jog levers, CD Text transfer, Personal Disc
Memory, etc. But considering that the image isn't of a R900, David, I'd
say wait for the silver.
