I guess it's probably gonna come down to cost vs ease, and perhaps sound
quality - 'though that may be difficult to quantify, depending on your setup
and use.
If your prepared to go with the attributable sound quality from recording
CDs using a sound card, is using a 3.5 jack to jack cable (MD -> soundcard)
gonna be that much of a compromise?

Not exactly sure of what you mean here, do you mean what do the connectors
look like?

Certainly would be easier - I'm rather assuming there are CD recordable
decks and MD decks in the one unit, but I'd guess there are - I just don't
follow them that closely. Most people tend to wanna go the other way around.

Why *only* Sony MD products?

I do wonder if you'd notice the difference, in the majority of instances.
Obviously this is gonna depend on expectations and appplication, but for
ages I've been recording MD's digitally (bookshelf unit), but when it was in
for repair, a month or so back, I did record a few MDs using analogue
connections - a couple of times from the analogue audio outs on my DVD
player, and last night using the analogue audio outs from my VCR - and I
have to say I've been more than happy with the recordings.
No doubt the use of high quality audio equipment would show the limitations
of these methods, but given that I mainly use MDs in my car (MD head unit)
and in my portable, I don't really notice much (if any) tangible differences
from the digital recordings.

I would have thought that if slightly more additional money wasn't an issue,
a deck would be the way to go.

Are there any decks that will transfer MD titles to CD text? (genuine
question)

There's always going to be some compromise on quality using most retail
soundcards, mainly because of all the noise and compromised shielding.

Can't really help on this, don't really do much audio stuff on my PC.
