Since this database was/is put together by people all over the net for free Escient should be sued for behaviour like that, but it would be too difficult I guess. About 80% of cddb lookups that I do (before ripping CDs, etc) need correcting, either because some idiot can't capitalise properly or straightforward spelling errors. Some have been so bad I've re-done them all by hand - problem then is if you re-submit the same album it doesn't replace the incorrect entry :) Saved me lot of time when I ripped my albums (200 or so) over the summer though.. If > anyone has more > info on how that works, I'd appreciate it.. They just keep the title info in a file on your hard drive. Nothing fancy. They compute a serial number/checksum for each CD based on each disc's table of contents, using the number of tracks and the length of each track. The assumption is that this will generate a unique signature for all albums. I believe since track lengths are encoded down to the frame, 1/80th of a second or something, that this is pretty reliable. The calculated checksum/signature is used as an index in the data file that stores the title info. This is the same approach used by www.cddb.com. This serial number is stored in a database and linked to a disk-name/track-name list in another database. You have to setup this database on each computer/operating system you want to read the titles.. Sony offers a simular feature on some off it's CD players. It's called custom-file. CD-Text is just like MD titling and also can store lots of other info, but I'm not sure that all of it can be displayed. Almost all newer CD writers will write CD-Text, Sony and HP-rebadged Sony's supported it earlier on. Many older drives with flash ROM can be updated to support it, but that depends primarily on the manufacturer. Sony CDRight! software and a program called "Nero" support CD-Text if your CD writer is capable. I've heard the latest Adaptec EZ CD creator supports it too. Almost all recent car CD players can display CD-Text, and many Sony home CD/DVD players. -- Shawn Lin http://www2.cybercities.com/g/gmwbodycars/ __ NetZero - Defenders of the Free World Get your FREE Internet Access and Email at http://www.netzero.net/download/index.html - To stop getting this list send a message containing just the word "unsubscribe" to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Yep, the KDMX3000 rocks, and at $500 from Crutchfield, it's not a bad deal! Speaking of CD-Text, I just tried that experiment last night, and discovered, as you noted, that it's not supported, unfortunately. Even worse was my recent experience of copying a new Ben Folds Five CD ("The Unauthorized Bio. of Reinhold Messner") to MD with my Sony MXD-D3. The disc and tracks are titled, but when you copy it to MD, you get a scrolling "TEXT PROTECT" message and the titles don't copy over. The previous BFF CD I have ("Whatever and Ever, Amen") has CD-Text which copies fine, so some evil lawyer at Sony must've decided that the copy protection bit would be a good thing to start turning on.. Let me get this straight: You can copy the digital audio to MD just fine (pursuant to SCMS restrictions), but they won't let you copy the titles?? Thus forcing me, a legitimate owner of a CD, making a legitimate copy for personal use, to waste an extra 5 minutes spinning the titling knob just to enter a few dozen bytes of info that are ALREADY on the CD and are certainly no big secret (considering the titles are printed right on the frickin' jewel box) but their lawyers are too *!#$^ lame to allow them to be copied over?! Thus Sony Music subverts a selling point of one of Sony's own consumer electronics devices. And big companies wonder why we've grown wary of their antics.. BTW, my recently purchased HP USB CD-Writer (8210e) doesn't support CD-TEXT for reading or writing.. However, the last time I used Easy CD Creator, I remember there *is* an option to title an audio CD in a way that the Windows Deluxe CD player can read the titling info. This might be worth looking into if you only want to read the titles on your computer. However this works, presumably it doesn't require any special features on the CD-R, and who knows, perhaps some enterprising programmer will add support for this to some of the Linux CD players, if it isn't there already. If anyone has more info on how that works, I'd appreciate it.. -Jake - To stop getting this list send a message containing just the word "unsubscribe" to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: MD: OT, anyone know how to title tracks on a CDR?
Yes, there is a way to title tracks on CD But you need software that can use CD-TEXT and a CD-burner thet has CD-TEXT... The Software i use, NEro (www.ahead.de) supports CD-TEXT But as i said, you need a CD-text supporting burner too And then there's the catch The CD-TEXT information can only be read with CD-text compatible cd-players (i.e. latest from sony) So There you have it Hope this was useful for you Greetz, Dodge __ Do You Yahoo!? (The newer Plextor drives are CD-Text capable AFAIK) Yes, I have a Plextor 8220 which reads & writes CD-Text. On Linux I use cdrdao to write CD-Text discs. On Windows I use Feurio - it's shareware, and I paid to register my copy. The version of Adaptec software that came with my Plextor doesn't support CD-Text. I've also tried Nero but I think Feurio works better. To whoever said that regular CD players barf on CD-Text discs - Wrong. CD-Text discs work fine in all CD players, but you only see the text on a Text-Capable drive/player. The text is encoded in a portion of the disc's Table of Contents that was previously unused. Feurio is cool because it automatically loads a CD's info from the CDDB database, so you don't have to do much typing when you're copying CDs to CDR. This is great for me, I have about 500 CDs that I'm slowly copying to CDR so that I can have title info when playing discs in my car. My Sony DVD player (DVP-C600D) displays disc titles from CD-Text, but doesn't display track titles. My JVC CHX1200 12 disc changer in my car displays disc and track titles on my KDMX3000 head unit. There is, called CD-Text - however it's not too well supported, either with recorders or players. A list of CDR drives that support it is here: http://www.ahead.de/en/Recorder.htm (5th column is for CD-Text) (Unfortunately, your Iomega drive isn't amongst them) It's gaining popularity with bookshelf systems and in-car players, but to be honest it probably isn't worth the change of hardware to add a feature only about 10% (being generous) of players can use. Your CDR drive would need to support CD TEXT and you would need the latest version of EZ CD Creator which does support CD TEXT. Of course, the person you give the CDR to would also need a CD Player that supports CD TEXT. The easy way would be just to use EZ CD Creator to make a jewel case insert and title the tracks there. -- Martin -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of J. Howdy, First your CD-Recorder must support something called CD-TXT, which most do not right now. There are a few that do, i believe a couple of the plextor models do and some others. Then after that your cd player must support CD text which again not many do. So for right now it's pretty worthless, but if you wanna look into it, i suggest going to http://www.cdmediaworld.com they have a lot of good info there on that kinda stuff.
