RE: MD: Sharp 701/702s for 99 Pounds at RS
I may be wrong, but Sharp doesn't really strike me as a half-arsed company with no money to spend on product development... My 702 was cheap, looks good and works very well. Sony stuff is nice, but they have some wobbly foibles too. I and all other persons I know can't hear the difference between the MDS-S38 (Sony ATRAC 4.0) and the Sharp 702 with digital recordings. I can however hear the difference (more noise) when recording analog. But remember that the MDS-S38 is a home-deck. Actually, I don't know who's better. And PrinceGaz, Sharp is AFAIK bigger than Sony. Maybee not in MD, but in all the rest for sure. The main difference is that Sharp is a OEM manufacturer and Sony not. (Kenwood and Dennon are two of Sharps OEM customers.) Cheers, Ralph -> Who's going to win? Sharp, Sony. I'm trying to level the playing field a bit. Sharp 702 units are not garbage. The technology still amazes me and friends when I show off the unit. RE: MD: Sharp 701/702s for 99 Pounds at RS
You can buy two Sharp 702 units for the cost of one Sony unit. Even assuming that one of them goes bad, in the mean time you've had the use of two very good recorders before one goes bad. The Atrac bug is a non issue unless you plan on recording solo french horn. I've used mine extensively for recording many different kinds of live music, and it sounds great. I'm a music composer and feel I have a pretty good ear. I don't know why you have it in for Sharp, but I have two 702s and an MD-R2 deck and am very satisfied with all of them. I've already used the two 702s to make a live recording of a school performance that will make me enough money to pay for both portables, the deck, and years worth of minidiscs. I think it's ridiculous that the Sony consumer decks that sell for $350-400 US (like the Sony MXD-D3) don't have digital output. I also bought a Sony DVD deck that would not play CDR audio discs (they are deliberately designed so that they will not play them). I exchanged it for a Pioneer (I think they are made by Sharp) that plays everything I put in it, and has more features for less money. I used to really like Sony equipment, but IMO, they are overpriced and underfeatured these days. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of PrinceGaz Sent: Thursday, December 16, 1999 12:53 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: MD: Sharp 701/702s for 99 Pounds at RS Hi guys, Thats true Ralph but what MD definitely does *not* need is peeps being introduced to units like the Sharp 701/702 which will go pants due to utoc errors in 12 months time. Add to that the allegedly buggy Sharp ATRAC coding prob (even in the latest units) and the little extra you pay for Sony stuff begins to make sense. C'mon guys-- Sony can throw many times the budget and staff at improving and checking their ATRAC algorithm than Sharp. It does surprise me that there could be a flaw as major as incorrectly coding the MSB in Sharps code, and that it wasn't corrected immediately but perhaps they're all incompetent :-) Cheers, PrinceGaz -- "Blessed Be." - To stop getting this list send a message containing just the word "unsubscribe" to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I take it these are the factory repacks which they told me about - I bought a 722 for 170 quid a couple of weeks ago because the 702 wasn't available. They said they had 1000 reconditioned 702s coming in before Christmas, but the guy I spoke to didn't know when or for how much. Never mind. It's a bloody good deal for 99 quid though...
