Re: [MBZ] Finnie Fun!
Good point. The newer filter, which could be used, would eliminate the need for the original plate. This tells me that whoever was kind enough to replace the PS filter may not have been terribly bright, either. I just got done fixing the fuel gauge sender. Gotta love those easy ones. It was stuck hard in position, but I opened up the little box with the rheostat in it, put some Kroil on the pin that the float rotates on, and within a couple of minutes it was as free as when it was made. Nice. Hit the rheostat part with some DeOxIt for sliding pots while I was there. It definitely needs a new gasket, as the old one is in pretty bad shape, but it seals for now. I’ll put that on my next dealer stock order. Popped everything back together, and I now have a functioning fuel gauge. Woo-hoo! Pictures in the blog tonight. -D > On Dec 30, 2018, at 10:27 AM, Meade Dillon via Mercedes > wrote: > > Regarding the power steering filter, whomever installed the wrong filter > did you a nice favor by also leaving the original plate there. Re: [MBZ] w123 brake upgrade
I have always found MB rotors to be good for two sets of pads, never more. They are designed for minimum weight for handling purposes, and are inexpensive and easy to replace. Measure for minimum thickness, or just do what I do -- when there is a noticeable lip on the outer edge of the rotor, it's done. Anything past the W124 is easy peasy to replace, no excuse for running on thin rotors which WILL warp in use. On top of that, thin rotors with dual piston calipers (on the rear, usually), will wreck the calipers when the backing plate on the pads hits the anit-rattle spring, cocking the pads and rotors and making them stick. The resultant heat cooks the rubber bits and leads to corroded pistons. Re: [MBZ] Finnie Fun!
Thanks, guys. Now that I’m past the steering coupling debacle I’m happy. A lot of grunt work done twice for no reason. I’ve been reading through the service manual for just about everything I’ve done up to now - except that. Serves me right. I have a bunch of metric hoses coming on Monday from BelMetric that will allow me to change some things out in the engine compartment, so that is in the offing. I need to figure out what springs to get for the front end - actually, which spring pads to get - I know which springs to get. I also need to drive it some more to get the fuel level down so I can pull the gauge sender and figure out why it’s not working. If you read through the last blog post you saw that the drive shaft center support “cushion” needs replacement badly - that’s on the list as well. Interesting arrangement with that rubber ring, yet there’s no bearing or anything. I might pull the wheel trim rings and hub caps and work on them today. I need some low impact stuff for a change…. -D > On Dec 29, 2018, at 11:17 PM, Curley McLain via Mercedes > wrote: > > Good work!
