Re: [MBZ] Extra for Andrew
Technically, the plastics that melt are thermoplastic, meaning they become more plastic with heat. Bakelite and similar are classified as thermosetting plastics, because they are heated to set the plastic. As Jm said, they will burn, rather than melting when heated. Fiberglass resins fall into the thermosetting category also. Jim Cathey via Mercedes wrote on 12/31/18 6:52 PM: Try a red-hot paperclip end on the back side. If it melts it a bit, you just need more heat. If it burns, it was 'set', like bakelite, and will never melt/bend. For those who don't know: You should listen to Craig. Here's why: Craig P.S. In case you missed it, I have a Ph.D. in physics, something very relevant to this discussion. Craig via Mercedes wrote on 12/31/18 2:30 PM: To date, the electricity from alternate sources has been much more expensive than from conventional sources -- if you eliminate the subsidies. One of the reasons for increased costs is that utility companies have to have a traditional source on line and spinning to make up for the dropouts of the alternate sources, thus wasting the traditional source fuel source. The driving factor is getting something for "free" and a mistaken belief that anthropogenic CO2 is the only knob controlling the global climate -- it, at best, runs a distant second to the most powerful climate-controlling gas, water vapor. For most of those who push anthropogenic CO2 and curbing fossil fuels it is a religion -- that's the only way one can explain their fervor and refusal to consider different viewpoints (including very scientifically based ones). The rest of those pushing curbing fossil fuels are doing so for the cut of the revenue they will receive from building alternate sources and from carbon cap/trading taxes. Fortunately for Washington state, it's voters recently soundly rejected their carbon cap/trading ballot question, precisely because of that. Utilities in California have to work in and with the liberal California world view -- they know which side their bread is buttered on. Given a level playing field, they might sing a different tune. The ride with the taxi springs is more firm. It also better handles loads in the seats and trunk. The RR also give more ground clearance. I suspect they are similar to the rate of normal springs, but have more travel. In other words, RR and taxi are similar, but taxi is stiffer. Both probably are similar travel. Dan Penoff via Mercedes wrote on 12/31/18 8:04 AM: The surface of the springs are pretty rusted or corroded from the looks of things. I haven’t tried cleaning them yet but I may to see if there are any paint marks visible. The manual doesn’t mention a spring compressor, although I do have one. It says to use a floor jack and remove the inside bolts on the LCA to drop it down. That’s most likely what I would do. The LCA has to come off anyway. A guy in the Vintage forum on BW said he had a W111 from Ecuador that shipped with “rough road springs” as MB calls them and he really liked it better than a standard sprung W110/W111. He later had a W108 that he changed the springs out to the RR springs and said it was a much better driver. I might consider it once I get some more information. I’ve already replaced one trailing arm bushing, and that was relatively easy as long as I had someone around to work the floor jack while I got the arm into position. From that I can see that replacing rear springs would be a piece of cake. I'm becoming convinced that I'll be replacing a wheel bearing in the future but not sure which one, yet. Based on my research, the wheel bearing assembly is a unit that is just bolted to the knuckle from the inside but it could be a tight fit. The job doesn't look hard if the bearing unit isn't seized to the knuckle; that's a big unknown but this car hasn't seen much winter salt so may be OK . The actual part is in the $50-200 range (RockAuto economy to dealer). I need for the noise to get significantly worse before I can locate the offending wheel. Thanks for the help. Re: [MBZ] OT interesting alternative energy talk
Answer to Andrew's well asked question: Over the past 25+ years, coal power plant regulation, via EPA and State Air Quality regulations has become increasingly draconian, To such an extent that a new coal fired generation facility could not be approved, and modification of existing coal fired generation reached the point of "no economic return". The lead time for approval for a new coal fired electric facility escalated so more than 25 years of applications followed by rejection for each element of the plant, all the while, tying up investment resources of the power company. Finally, in the past 8 years, coal was "outlawed completely" as a power source for new plants, by being "out regulated" The common wisdom, of those who follow such things, was that decision was done to force the acceptance of wind, solar and alternate sources, which were at the same time given special pass in tax incentives, government grants, and near lack of regulation, by comparison to coal or gas fired plants. In 1982 I was involved in the design , development and production of scrubber systems for coal plants to reduce emissions. This was mandated by regulation from EPA and each system cost multiple millions to install and further millions to maintain, while being continually monitored by EPA staff and government regulators. If the plants failed inspections, fines were mandated, on a per day basis for each day out of compliance... and they were not "parking ticket fines"... thousands of dollars per day. Re: [MBZ] OT interesting alternative energy talk
Well I have a geology degree but that is equally irrelevant. Let the market dictate and set the politics aside. Why would for-profit utilitiesclose down their coal plants if they could make money by keeping them open? Why are all new power plants wind and solar where the resource is plentiful, and natural gas otherwise. Re: [MBZ] Extra for Andrew
Ahh, Rockler. Used to have one of their stores close by when I was living in Indianapolis and still had a full wood shop. Like a kid in a candy store…. I usually go full bore on this old stuff using aircraft grade stripper. The older finishes can be really tough to cut, so this way it’s that much less work to do. Glad I don’t have a wood speaker grille. While they’re cool looking, they’re pretty delicate and would be a real b*tch to strip and refinish, I would think. Now if I could just get the plastic grille I have to flatten out some. Tried a heat gun yesterday but that didn’t seem to phase it. -D > On Dec 31, 2018, at 7:23 PM, Dimitri via Mercedes > wrote: > > I used a soy based stripper which I bought at Rockler on my pagoda speaker > grille. Re: [MBZ] Extra for Andrew
Gloves: Blue HF nitrile gloves are only 7 nul thick.. the Black HF nitrile gloves are 9 mil thick... so give more protection However, my experience with bot h led me to Home Depot paint department where they have a package of 2 long cuff nitrile gloves that are about 20 mil thick and MUCH more durable for stripping. I keep a 5 gallon bucket of clean water handy, and a supply of liquid hand soap, Immediately after using stripper, I wash my hands, with the gloves on, with soap and water [5 gallon bucket water]. then dry the gloves with paper towels, so they are "ready to go again". Because they are thicker, and because I quickly wash off any stripper, and because they have long cuffs, which keeps stripper off your arms and wrists, I'm still using the first pair of the pack, after stripping two sets of rims [5 rim sets] and several smaller strip jobs... IMHO... well worth a few extra bucks for the better gloves. These are light enough you still have good tactile feel.. not the heavy "plumbers gloves".. Hope this helps. [MBZ] Extra for Andrew
Since Andrew was all excited about wood refinishing, I thought I would post some preliminary stuff for him and everyone else to see. Today I got my aircraft stripper from the Island of Big Wimmen, so this afternoon I started in on the two pieces that are at the front of the dashboard, below the windshield. These are probably the easiest to work with outside of the little window surround pieces, but I didn’t want to deal with 12 pieces of interior wood this afternoon. I hit them both with three separate applications of stripper, scraping between each application with a plastic scraper. Beware! This stuff will give you chemical burns, and it happens the second it touches you. The HF blue gloves will break down in it, too, so expect to wear multiple pairs, or get some heavier ones (I recommend.) Note the pieces in this picture, and pay close attention to their color. That’s aged varnish that can turn almost black as it ages and is exposed to the elements. In the case of this car, there were leaks in the windshield at some time I’m assuming, as the tips of the pieces that are located at the base of the “A” pillars are black. This indicates the wood was wet for more than a short time and has rotted slightly. Not a lot you can do about this, but since these parts are masked by the others, it’s not a big deal. http://penoff.com/photodump.html#0 The top windshield pieces are pretty nasty from a finish standpoint, but intact. That’s more important, as we can use stain to mask just about any finish imperfections. We want to be sure the wood is physically intact. So here are the lower dash pieces soaking in aircraft stripper: http://penoff.com/photodump.html#1 Yup, that’s a green ScotchBrite pad. No, I’m not using it to work the stripper, however. After about three applications of stripper, the parts get rinsed. Yes, I turn the hose on them. Will it hurt them? The short answer is no. While in most cases when you put water on a raw wood surface, the grain raises, giving the surface a lot of little wood “hairs”. Since this is veneer, there’s very little grain to raise, and while in theory is does raise the grain, it’s so imperceptible it’s not important. While I’m rinsing the parts, I’m using the ScotchBrite pad to remove old finish. While you can’t see it, there are still vestiges of the original finish present, and gently wiping with this lifts and removes a lot of it. Plus you can rinse the ScotchBrite pad and reuse it, and it’s not aggressive enough to go through the veneer unless you really wail on it - which you shouldn’t! Watch out for sharp edges, as these are the places where you risk damaging the veneer. So after three coats of stripper, rinsing and rubbing with the ScotchBrite pad, this is what you end up with: http://penoff.com/photodump.html#2 http://penoff.com/photodump.html#3 Yes, they look mottled, but much lighter. Probably 90% of the old finish has been removed. If you could run your hands over them you would feel old finish where the dark areas are. The pieces are now inside the house drying. Tomorrow I’ll hit them with another coat or two of stripper, and get the last of the finish off with the ScotchBrite pad, after which they’ll be dried and then readied for staining. More as I do it, I’ll put it in the blog, too. -D ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

To date, the electricity from alternate sources has been much more expensive than from conventional sources -- if you eliminate the subsidies. Re: [MBZ] OT interesting alternative energy talk
We have a 300 acre solar “farm” going in to an adjacent county that is largely agricultural and rural. A number of homeowners around the site had a blowout because they said it would “change the character” of the area. I’m not sure how going from grassy meadows with cattle grazing to a large solar farm with grass growing under it would change the “character" of anything. Sure, it’s going to look different, but functionally, the land will remain unchanged. For that matter, I would welcome it strictly from the standpoint that it would keep some people away…. -D > On Dec 31, 2018, at 2:33 PM, Peter Frederick via Mercedes > wrote: > > We have a 450 acre solar farm going in across the road from my house next > year. You can still used the klann spring compressor on the front end... put the lower plate under the control arm and the upper plate as high up as possible on the spring. Makes things much less frightening! If you don't want to mark up the lower control arm (which is an issue after powder coating), just put some cardboard between the plate and the arm. Its not always very clear... the original springs have multiple colors on them that don't always correspond to what the manual/TDM says. Last time I ordered replacement springs for a W108 (rear), they came with two red marks, which made selecting the pads easy at that point. I recommend ordering the springs, see what comes, then get the pads after that. Jaime On Mon, Dec 31, 2018 at 6:01 AM Dan--- via Mercedes wrote: > I DO have it. Re: [MBZ] [Daveslist] Finnie Fun!
The surface of the springs are pretty rusted or corroded from the looks of things. They have special concrete anchors for that, but I always figured if I were going to put a lift in a new garage I'd use giant U bolts cast into the concrete, and the area around the posts would be 3x as deep as the rest of the pour. Re: [MBZ] [Daveslist] Finnie Fun!
yes, that is how the book does it. are you saying there are no paint marks left or are you saying you have not looked at them? The paint marks have been very durable but it is now 53 years since they were put on. it all depends on the ride height you want. When I did the springs on 111s, I went with the taxi version, but that IS higher than stock. from what little I remember, I think I used 12-15mm thick. Stock is in the 8-12mm range top and bottom. One thing you could do is order 3 pairs for one end of the car, say 8, 10 and 12 for the front. Use the 2 pairs you determine most likely to be exact replacement, and finish that end. Repeat for the other end. Otherwise take one corner apart, and look over the parts. The springs will be sprung, but you should be able to find evidence of the paint marks. On the rubber seats, the markings are hidden until you take them out. Without spring pressure, the pretty much fall out. So if you do one front and one rear, you should have the info you need. Leave it on jack stands until the parts come in or put it back together. it does not take that long to drop out a spring, look at it, then put it back together, but I'd just leave it apart until the parts come in. The rear is particularly easy to drop out a spring as long as you have a floor jack. I put air bags in the rear springs of my 200D in the yard of a nuns house in KY in December, on grass without a floor jack. It is that easy to drop out the rear springs and put them back. I can get it down to a certain point, then the manual says you need the paint mark color on the spring for the final determination. I was hoping to be able to get everything at once and not have to order springs, get them, then order spring pads. -D ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com
