Re: [MBZ] NOW Opacity Test What Should I Start Amassing?
Bob, I would start amassing quantities of good, but cheap oil.? (Checker is having a sale tomorow on Pennzoil @99cents/qt, after rebate.? Next oil change, I would switch?to a 20W-50 oil as long as it starts easily.? When you get down to using a quart every 250 miles, it will still pass smog, but it probably won't start so easy.? When my 240D was on it's deathbed, I kept a 2 1/2 gallon bulk oil container in the trunk.? fill the tank with diesel every 400 miles, and dump in an estimated 2 quarts of oil!? I knew it was done for when I had to glow the sucker when it was hot, even!? But it still passed smog!? I don't recall if the wind was blowing, tho. Marshall would say? "as long as the diesel starts easily and reliably, you have?NO problem!? Oil is cheap."? Mondays are good--I am ready.? Jim in Phoenix We'll do lunch some Monday, Chuck. That's not a bowling day is it Jim? -Original Message- From: Robert Rentfro <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: 'Mercedes Discussion List' Sent: Sun, 17 Feb 2008 9:58 am Subject: Re: [MBZ] NOW Opacity Test What Should I Start Amassing? Bob, In AZ, the limit for passenger diesels is 20% Opacity. That's a lot of smoke. And a little secret Plan on taking it for the emissions test when the wind is blowing! Back when I had the '80 300SD, the worst it blew was 4% and when it was windy, it went down to 1%.. And before you go in, run it hard and keep it hot.. Take care, Chuck PS. Is the temp sender in the engine compartment (where the wire connects to) or elsewhere? Very likely a bad temperature sender. Replace it, and have someone do the usual thermo wax test on the thermostat housing to verify. It's possible, although unlikely, that the thermostat housing is leaking past the thermostat, but I think you would notice that. Bob, Have you used one of the laser thermometers to see if the gauge has perhaps gone south?? Aim it at the hoses and other spots.. On my 500E, the high gauge temps turned out to be caused by a loose wire connection at the gauge.. Diagnosed by Bud at MB Motors. Re: [MBZ] NOW Opacity Test What Should I Start Amassing?
Good idea, Chuck. Speaking of keeping it hot, I've been through three t-stats (two from Rusty I think) and with all of them the hottest it ever gets is just to the tic mark above the 110 degrees F. There was one time, when after removing the top hose to put Tom's AC clutch on, I neglected to top off the radiator it ran at 175 degrees F but when I looked in the radiator I could see no level. What's going on here? This car has always run cold.
