Congrats on a good result.

The poster collecting community reached out a long way for this one. The
tip off came from a Melbourne based collector and member of the Vintage
Movie Posters Forum.

Nice to see this sort of thing happen.

Re: [MOPO] [FA] ULTRA Rare English One Sheet - The Third Man (1949)

2015-06-26 Thread David Rew
Unfortunately I have not heard back from Greg as yet to my follow up
email where I asked about the (actual) number on this poster or his
opinion on the re-release question, I do not know him at all so could
not be too forward in chasing him up. I did provide him with a link to
the MoPo conversation in my original email, I can only presume he read
(some of) it.

I think ultimately this poster (and those others _exactly_ like it) will
leave two camps completely divided, and certainly on the face of it
there is logic for both sides. What has been great(?!) is we all now
know there are three (UK1SH) posters for this title whereas previously
we lead to believe there was two; obviously I am saddened for those who
have now discovered their original is now not so original, but try being
a daybill collector, we walk that path almost daily!

I know the owner (who has followed this thread closely) has been
extremely appreciative of everyone's input (and I can't emphasise that
enough) as am I, it has been a remarkable journey and most have
participated simply with a desire to seek the true facts rather than
tear holes and criticise and for that I thank you - personally, I remain
in the camp of an original release for overseas distribution. But unless
anything new is uncovered I guess we are all talked out.

The owner has decided to leave the poster as is on BIDLL
<http://bidll.com/Listing/Details/420722> and after all this if it
doesn't sell he will frame it and put it on his wall where it will take
pride of place and come with a quite remarkable story.

Either way, it's a hell of a rare poster.

kind regards to all

Did Greg give any indication of what the number might look like if it
were a re-release? Would Stafford & Co issue a new one (or blank it
out)? I hate to differ from Greg, as he obviously has a load of
experience in this area. I bought some of my first posters from him
all those years ago, and he has virtually god-like status in my eyes,
but the more I look into this, the more I’m sure it’s a re-release.
With him not being on the forum, it’s difficult to know whether he’s
studied this in any detail or is just trying to help out with guidelines.

To show how relentlessly objective I’m trying to be, I do actually
have one of these posters in my personal collection. It came from
Christies in 1997 back in the days when I had a proper job, money …
and life outside the house! It may not end up being in my own best
interests, but I’d prefer to nail down the true history behind it.
It’s a great poster for a great film regardless of release date and I
can’t see myself ever parting with it. OK that’s the sanctimonious bit
out of the way and here’s the poster:

http://s811.photobucket.com/user/movieposterstudio/media/ThirdManGB1.jpg.html?sort=3&o=0

(I’ve added Clanger toy propping up business card so you know I’m not
bluffing and didn’t just lift a random image from somewhere else!)

I was originally hoping this topic would be resolved long ago without
having to wheel the poster out and extract it from its frame, but here
we go. In the cause of pseudo-science, I’ve compared it to other
British one sheets from the period. Unusually, I found that the three
I own from 1950 or before (End of River/Elusive Pimpernel/Gone To
Earth), all printed by Stafford, all have rough fronts and smooth
backs. I also have a Tales Of Hoffmann from 1951, which appears to
have a rough front too, but is linenbacked so I can’t be sure it’s not
due to the backing process. Can you tell I’m a Powell & Pressburger
fan? The Third Man on the other hand has a smooth front and rough
back, as do two later Staffords from 1956 (Green Man/Three Men In A Boat).

Five other British one sheets dating from 1952 to 1957 printed by WE
Berryall have a smooth front and rough back.

Make of that what you will. It’s not going to be definitive, since
I’ll never have a full run of Staffordone sheets and it might be a
coincidence down to different printer plants etc. By contrast all the
Staffordquads I have over the entire period in question all have a
smooth front and rough back.

As you know, the real sticking point for me is Lion International
apparently replacing the Londonlogo. The evidence seems overwhelming,
at least to me:

1. A company called Lion International was formed in 1955.

2. I can’t find a single contemporary reference to a company with the
name Lion International BEFORE 1955 on posters, pressbooks, trade
advertising, film archives, or searches. Only LondonFilms
International. And I’ve LOOKED. (BTW a large number of emo

/"As the film was released in 1949 any original poster would have a 4
figure number in the bottom right corner which should start with a '9'
and end in an 'A'. If the poster is from 1950-51 it would have a 3
figure number but with no 'A'. From some time in 1952 onwards it would
be a 4 figure number, also with no 'A'."//

/
he also said:

/"The artwork is identical to the British quad. The British Film
Institute have a copy which I have attached for you (unfortunately not
big enough to check the numbering)."/

I bet you are all rushing off to see what the BIDLL one says, I know
and...whoops, it's my dinner time.

Talk soon.

Re: [MOPO] [FA] ULTRA Rare English One Sheet - The Third Man (1949)

2015-06-23 Thread David Rew

Just wanted to offer this follow-up.

As you know I had written to Mr Peter Snell owner of CEO of British Lion
Film in the hope he might be able to help with the puzzle of the poster.
Although he did not respond directly to me he did kindly pass on my
email to Studio Canal to respond. For those who do not know, Studio
Canal actually have just restored The Third Man and it has (just) been
released as well as available to purchase from all the usual online
re-sellers; watch the (restored) trailer here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r9yyDEDGlr0.

Mr. Massimo Moretti who is the UK Library Commercial Development Manager
for StudioCanal answered as follows [some edits]:

/"... Our company controls the rights to most of the historical British
Lion catalogue. It is a library with a fascinating history, but this is
history is also quite complicated. Please accept my apologies for the
generalizations, but, in essence://

//
//Studiocanal acquired the catalogue as part of the purchase of the
Lumiere Films catalogue in 1994-6. //

//
//Originally the British Lion assets were acquired by EMI Films around
1973. What makes it complicated is that British Lion acted both as a
financier and as a straightforward distributor and the rights situations
are sometimes complex. However, around 1949, British Lion was owned by
Sir Alexander Korda who used the studio facilities at Shepperton and the
distribution arm for his films produced under ‘London Films’. This is
where The Third Man comes into place. At the time The Selznick
Organization acquired North American distribution rights (the title was
spelled The 3rd Man and the poster is very different), while British
Lion distributed internationally."/

I also asked if it might be possible if he would know the international
re-release history for the film, to which he replied:

/"I am afraid our records on the International distribution arm are
pretty much non-existent, we end up relying on the BFI library and
imdb.com (which is far from reliable sometimes). It does not help that
when producing artwork British Lion often relied on National Screen
Services and they have also long gone.//"/

He also kindly (as I did ask), a couple of lo-res images of the
quads...thought you might like to see them...I'm assuming the US
(Selznick) one would have been part of the _*USA
1956/57*_*_re-releases_* (BTW - the US poster sucks ass). ;)

Here are the confirmations of those USA reissues
http://www.archive.org/stream/motionpicturedai78unse#page/n383/mode/2up
http://www.archive.org/stream/motionpicturedai80unse#page/n347/mode/2up/search/%22third+man%22+AND+%22reissue%22

That is all I have thus far, as you know I had written to someone I know
at BFI but as yet I have not heard back. Either way, I think the poster
on BIDLL is a special and rare one
<http://bidll.com/Listing/Details/420722> - good luck if you are bidding.

Good Morning all!

Once again my beauty sleep has worked wonders for my skin, the
wrinkles have fallen to one side, which has made me a little blind in
one eye as I see I have a lot of reading.

Well if nothing else I have enjoyed the hunt and the excellent
resources that have been used and posted for more information on this
poster - thanks to all. I think many have enjoyed some of the what has
been revealed. The link to http://mediahistoryproject.org/ from Paul
Gerrard (via Uncle Phil some years ago) is excellent, I've been
trawling through it, what a superb resource!

Here's something interesting, (apologies if others have already seen
it):
http://archive.org/stream/motionpicturedai78unse#page/n383/mode/2up
specifically perhaps note what films were up for immediate re-release,
although it doesn't specifically help date the poster because we do
have those other "R-50s" posters in the mix.

Anyway, back to the reading, fantastic and fascinating stuff and the
most animated membership has been in a while, one could almost hear
all the coffin lids creaking and the capes being thrown back over the
shoulders...

* The bidll copy also has the same text at the top (as the 50RR),
wherein "A LONDON FILMS PRODUCTION" has been omitted before Korda and
Selznick's name.

* The bidll copy is missing the London Films logo in the lower right
(as is also missing from the 50s RR).

* "Distributed by Lion International Films" is present on the bidll
copy and 50s RR copy, lower left corner, and is present at all on the
'49 copy.

* And when one looks closely at the artwork (the details on the man,
and the orange cityscape behind, the large cloud in the sky) the
artwork is NOT identical; but 2 lightly different versions- shading,
detail, placements of shadows, etc.

* And lastly, the placement of the printer's info, lower right border
is not printed in the exact same location as on the 49 copy (it is
shifted more to the left, beginning under the first leg of the N of
MAN, along with the bidll copy also having the added "and London"
after the name of NOTTINGHAM.

Too many variations... and even if done for colonies, why would all of
the above being missing/different/changed? It's a different piece
entirely than the known HA '49 copy.

More research should be done on this before calling it a "for certain"
'49 original release OS, one would think.

'Tis curious indeed.

I know the last time Heritage sold this poster which was five
years ago, they listed it as an early 1950's re-release and it
sold for $900.

Well we made it to 20 after all!

Today marks MoPo’s 20^th Anniversary. For the last couple of years,
our anniversary has been preceded by a discussion about how little we
actually discuss posters on this forum. This year it was John Reid’s
February 12^th post, “How MoPo has Changed,” pointing out the lack of
discussion or comment on movie posters. In 2014, in time for our 19^th
birthday, Helmut posted an analysis of MoPo posts (84% were either
auction or for sale posts) and former member Bruce H. mentioned how 2
other poster forums are pretty dead. I find it just an interesting
coincidence that this seems to happen just about every February 24^th
! But no matter…MoPo is still chugging along.

We’ve survived longer than I ever dreamed (much longer than the
majority of Hollywood marriages). On February 24, 1995 the first
official MoPo post was distributed via American University’s listserv.
There were 11 members at the start, and as is my annual custom, I
recognize these MoPo pioneers: Mahtab Moayeri, Michael Danese, Rob
Ellis, Donna Tschetter, Goh Kai Shen, Evan Zweifel, George Nichol,
Cindy Nemeth-Johannes (we lost Cindy in 2008, but her husband Jay is
still a member), Jeff Static (AOL’er Static555), Adam Ehrlich and
myself. In addition to Jay, Michael, Rob and Evan are still members.

Last year I wondered whether MoPo would make it to 20, or if it even
should. Well, here we are and I guess we’ll soldier on…at least until
American University decides to shut down their listserv! I do hate to
see longtime members leave, (Poster seller Bruce Hershenson and the
prolific Tom Martin are 2 examples of people who exited this past
year), but that’s the way of Internet forums.

Thanks to all of you for keeping this relic of the 20^th century alive
for yet another year!

Scott

[MOPO] Interview & Income

2015-02-17 Thread David Rew

Hi All

I thought you might like to know that I have just been interviewed for
the Fairfax's Small Business section of *The **Sydney Morning Herald*.
The SMH is Australia's #1 with over 5 million readers (read here
<http://www.smh.com.au/business/smh-tops-readership-list-20140713-3bv3z.html>).
I have no idea when or what will get published (but they came to me) so
_/if you are looking to be in front of an interested and perhaps an
impulse buying customer/_ then you maybe now is a good time to get some
items listed on Bidll asap.

It's FREE to have a standard listing on BIDLL and only 6% success fee
(hammer price only not on the postage), and there is no charge if it
doesn't sell.

best of luck!

Re: [MOPO] NT PayPal holding funds for 21 days

2015-02-15 Thread David Rew
Don't worry, once you have served your 21 day new account 'time' PayPal
can arbitrarily then do a 21 day hold on any transaction, no matter how
long you've been trading with them, and these are the reasons they may use:

 * The selling price for this transaction was suddenly changed.
 * The transaction is quite different from your normal business.
 * The item sold may potentially cause dissatisfaction with customers.
 * Your account was inactive for a while.
 * You only recently started selling outside of eBay, so your history
with us as an off-eBay seller is quite short.

None of the above of course make sense.

And phoning them will not hasten the payment.

Hi to you all,

As you are all well aware, eBay/PayPal have the above policy for
anyone starting on eBay or using an new eBay ID for the first time. I
am sure many have experienced this and found it to be very
frustrating. In my case it involves a new eBay ID. If anybody has any
intel on how this can be got around I would be grateful to hear your
thoughts. The internet has a number of suggestions, some say they work
and others don’t. I thought the good folk on MoPo might have some
genuine ideas that may have worked before I try what I have seen on
the net.

[MOPO] FYI: Cleopatra (1963)

2015-02-14 Thread David Rew
An interesting article was posted in the Vintage Movie Poster Forum
which was originally written by Gerhard Witte, of Berlin, Germany.
Basically he provides an in depth research about the origins of the
Cleopatra poster design and some other interesting details:

As the owner of such a poster (below) I found it well worth the read, if

not so sure about that Dave. Of course the fact that there are few
places to buy movie posters may be one factor, but I got my first
movie posters when I was maybe 10 and I know that when I was 11 I
bought lots of them (some I still have)

I think the reality is that the poster hobby has changed considerably
from a nostalgiac appreciation to a a sideshow of a memory.
at the same time, the missing apparatus of "posters as a true
investment vehicle" doesn't do anything to help because we all know
that when people buy physical property they generally expect it to
increase in value.
That much of the material has a deteriorating value is anathema to
that interest and creates a real turn-off to prospective buyers.

I wish it were different, but reality is what it is and there is no
need for me or anyone else to deny it

poster collecting as a 'serious' hobby is a much younger one too.
After all many collectors would enter the comic collecting at a far
younger age whereas perhaps a large portion of movie poster
collectors come into it in their 30s and 40s when they are reliving
the movies of their youth/teens, and have a more disposable income?

Perhaps?

2015-02-12 Thread David Rew
Certainly Chris Barrie (who can forget him in Red Dwarf or Brittas
Empire?) saying Chitty would be his fav was a surprise, then again isn't
he a car nut? I was surprised the artist (forget his name) had not heard
of poster collecting as a hobby. Sadly, and perhaps showing my age or
lack of love for S Club 7, I had to look up who Hannah Spearritt was...

I’ve since become good friends with Hannah Spearritt and have sourced

Just deciding whether I want to do that with Chitty or Bond ;-)

I just wanted to do something that might drum up some interest on

[MOPO] Bidll's Next Event...

2015-02-11 Thread David Rew

*Bidll's ANZAC Day Auction*

ANZAC Day (25th April) is a very special day in Australia and New
Zealand, one of national commemoration in both countries as it marks the
anniversary of the first major military action fought by Australian and
New Zealand forces during the First World War. 'ANZAC' stands for
*A*ustralian and *N*ew *Z*ealand *A*rmy *C*orps. On the 25th of April
1915, Australian and New Zealand soldiers formed part of the allied
expedition that set out to capture the Gallipoli peninsula. These became
know as Anzacs and the pride they took in that name continues to this
day. With the coming of the Second World War, Anzac Day also served to
commemorate the lives of Australians and New Zealanders who died in that
war. The meaning of Anzac Day today includes the remembrance of all
Australians & New Zealanders killed in any military operations.

ANZAC Day a national holiday in both countries and it is tradition that
one attends Dawn services to remember those who fell in battle serving
our countries; in addition and out of respect almost all retail stores
throughout the two countries stay shut until 1pm on ANZAC Day, our
auction will start at 1pm on ANZAC Day (Saturday 25th April) and run
through to Sunday 3rd May.

_*After the success of our 2015 Australia Day Auction we are calling for
consignors to submit appropriate material for this auction (to be held
in two months).*_

*There will be three special sections*

1. Movie posters /produced/ in Australia (same as before) e.g. A
Daybill for Casablanca (1942) is acceptable as is a USA1SH for The
Delinquents (1989) but a USA1SH for The Time Machine (starring
   Australian Rod Taylor is not).
2. Movie posters for /Australian-made/ movies (same as before).
3. Military themed posters - _MUST BE Australian produced posters_ eg
 * The 'Buy Bonus Bonds' type posters or 'Recruitment' posters, or
even Movietone posters (with war news content) or
 * Posters for films that have a war/military theme - but they
_MUST BE Australian produced posters_./BTW, I know Star Wars was
a battle fought between the forces of good and evil, but
technically it's not a military film, so if you want to put one
in and it qualifies then it goes in the other sections!/

*Why Consign to Bidll?*

1. No need to pack up all your posters to send to us, you consign
   virtually - you save money!
2. You can set a reserve on each of your listings if you so wish - no risk!
3. NO fees if it doesn't sell - no risk!
4. NO cost for listing on Bidll - no hidden fees!
5. The buyer pays you directly, the instant he pays you get the money -
no waiting for any month following month-end reconciliation by us!
6. 6% commission /only if it sells/! eg sell for $5 and you pocket
$4.70, /not/ $1.25 as an example elsewhere. Or sell for $1,000 you
pay only $60 in fees not $200+ as you do elsewhere!

Interested in consigning? Please drop me a line as submissions number
are limited (there is only so many posters that can be auctioned!).

BTW - even if you don't have anything for this event you can still place
a FREE listing in the standard sections of BIDLL, during our last Blue
Ribbon event I do know that some of our sellers made sales even though
they didn't have items listed in the Australia Day auction - visitors
take time to look at all items listed on our site...

Questions and comments are welcome.

[MOPO] Well that was that...

2015-02-02 Thread David Rew
The greatest Australia Day Auction ever held is over, and I believe I
can say I good success.

A number of notables:

 * I understand the final hammer price for The Wizard of Oz was highest
achieved in this country in public auction (movie poster).
 * The quality, the variety and the rarity of many of the titles shows
that there is still a lot of posters around we have yet to see.
 * We saw a lot of 'new' buyers bid, that is people who we do not
   recognise as regular buyers/collectors elsewhere.
 * Consigning virtually to a specialist poster auction site does work,
there is no cost is postage getting it to us, there is no cost to
list the item and no charge if it doesn't sell either.
 * We returned more profit dollars to our sellers than anywhere else
due to our low commission, which is a 6%, flat rate, even on the low
value items, it's the same rate for high priced items and a $2000
sale is a $2000 sale anywhere and 6% commission puts even more
   dollars in your pocket!
 * Everything that was accepted for consignment for this auction was
listed - there's was no waiting!
 * Some items were paid for by the buyers within 5 minutes of their
winning bid! Instant payment is a good thing sellers!
 * As an auction house we operate on an honesty system for commissions,
we don't deduct our fees from your sale, we bill you separately!

As a bonus I note that a number of our sellers who were NOT in the
Australia Day auction but did have movie posters in the standard section
of Bidll sold some posters as well, obviously because all our visitors
browsed through all items on the site. Makes sense really, after-all
it's free to place a standard listing on Bidll so what a great way to be
in front of a captive and already interested potential client.

Finally, I've had quite a few questions about when is the next one (not
just from hopefully our sellers, but buyers too) it's a good question
and if you are a registered member of Bidll we'll let you know - very
very soon...sign up today <http://bidll.com/Account/Register>

[MOPO] All 335 poster are available for preview

2015-01-24 Thread David Rew
All checked, and cross checked (I hope!), I've now finished loading the
last few stragglers and even in those last few there were some very nice
ones I must say - there is 335 original movie posters for you to enjoy.
As a result I have watched a hell of a lot of movie trailers (because a
lot of the listings have the original movie trailer for you to watch)
and I can safely say my movie list has expanded, not just the
international stuff but there is a lot of Australian movies that really
deserves a look.

I also want to say a big thanks to all the consignors (I won't mention
them all by name), they're all Australian based and have really
supported this event, more so for what it is about: Australian produced
movie posters AND movie posters for Australian made movies.

I do have to give a special thanks to John Reid and Phil Edwards, both
of whom have really offered a lot of advice, suggestions and of course
ultimately their support, without it this may have never happened.

Of course, whatever happens now is out of my hands, but getting this
many pieces together, some exceedingly rare, has made this event a
success no matter what the numbers come out like at the end. So, if you
are not bidding but know someone who might like to, send them along; but
if you are bidding, good luck and *Bid* We*ll*...

*BIDLL!*

[MOPO] Sneak Peak #16 - (Last One)

2015-01-18 Thread David Rew
Register today <http://bidll.com/Account/Register> for the greatest
Australia Day Movie Poster Auction the world has ever seen...January 26,
2015.

*The Wizard of Oz (1939) - An Original Australian One Sheet Movie Poster
*
They say in you will be lucky to see one of these posters in your
lifetime...you are in luck!

The Australian One Sheet is considered to be the superior design of all
the original Wizard of Oz movie posters; this 75 year old poster is so
rare it had to be removed from beneath some floorboards just to bring it
to our auction! I can say as I have physically seen it, the colours on
this poster are outstanding! This will be a jewel in anyone's collection.

The movie itself was released in Australia on the _2__4th November 1939_
- imdb has the release date as 18th April 1940, that is simply
incorrect. It had an early morning showing at The Liberty Theatre (Pitt
Street, Sydney), 9:00am on the 24th November 1939 and continued from
then to enjoy an extended season into 1940.

The Liberty Theatre opened on 31st March 1934 and the décor was well
accounted for in papers and magazines: “/...the Rayner Hoff panel is
typical of the artistic mural decorations. The foyer was furnished in
the modern manner by Bebarfalds Ltd., and the picture shows the graceful
lines of the chairs and lounge. The ushers (ten exceptionally pretty
girls) arc all beautifully gowned in modern slim-fitting frocks of brown
velvet relieved with gold. Across the front of each dress is embroidered
the symbol of the Liberty—a torch, embossed in tangerine and gold. The
girls wear halos of gold lame. The frocks are the work of David Jones.../"

The theatre seated 401 in the stalls and 252 in the circle.

Please enjoy this, your last sneak peak at another stunning piece being
auctioned on www.Bidll.com on January 26th 2015 and BTW, this is not
Toto appearing with the poster!

[MOPO] Sneak Peak #15

2015-01-16 Thread David Rew
Register today <http://bidll.com/Account/Register> for the greatest
Australia Day Movie Poster Auction the world has ever seen...January 26,
2015.

*Hop-A-Long Cassidy (1935) - Original Australian Long Daybill Movie Poster

*This is the first poster for the first movie of 66 Hopalong Cassidy
films produced between 1935 and 1948, all 66 films starred William Boyd
in the title role.

Born in 1895, William Boyd arrived in Hollywood around 1918 and quickly
became a fully fledged leading man during the silent era, including many
films for Cecil B. DeMille. But roles in the early 1930s Boyd found it
tough to find roles, some said it was because of his prematurely greying
hair, other said it was due to his constant womanising, partying and
alcohol...surely the latter three contributing to the former?!

An independent producer by the name of Harry 'Pop' Sherman convinced
Paramount to release a series of westerns based on the Hopalong Cassidy
novels and short stories authored by Clarence E. Mulford and ultimately
Boyd got the role. The first in the series, Hop-A-Long Cassidy was
released in the USA in August of 1935, and in Australia from November
1935 (it would late be renamed Hopalong Cassidy Enters, for this reason
perhaps it is difficult to find movie posters under the film's original
title).

William Boyd’s Hopalong Cassidy was multi-faceted. He was good, honest,
brave, and tough. He was also funny, caring, loyal and not afraid to
show his emotions. He wasn't a Superman—he got shot, tied up, put in
jail, and knocked around. He was the smartest cowboy, fastest gun,
toughest fighter, and best rider in the West. William Boyd appeared in
66 Hop-A-Long Cassidy movies and a further fifty-two television episodes
playing a much beloved icon of the silver and small screen.

Please enjoy your sneak peak at this wonderful poster produced by the
famed Richardson Studios, it is indeed a rare piece of movie history
being auctioned on www.Bidll.com on January 26th 2015.

*The Postman Always Rings Twice (1946) - Original Australian One Sheet
Movie Poster

*This 1946 drama-film noir is based on the 1934 novel of the same name
by James M. Cain. The movie starred Lana Turner, John Garfield, Cecil
Kellaway, Hume Cronyn, Leon Ames, Audrey Totter, and was directed by Tay
Garnett. This film centres on the passionate affair that violently
erupts between a mysterious wanderer and the wife of a diner owner and
the trouble that starts when the lovers decide that the only way to be
together and have the money is to murder her husband.

It is rated as one of Turner's best performances Turner gave in her
career, often trading on her looks in this movie she gives an
outstanding portrayal a complex woman. Hume Cronyn as the shyster lawyer
plays a memorable part as well.

There are different versions of how the author came up with the title,
the most popular was that it was inspired by writer Vincent Lawrence.
When the manuscript was being rejected by publishers, Lawrence told
James M. Cain how he had mailed out his first play and sat by the window
waiting for a letter accepting it until he realised that the postman
always rang twice.

The working title for the film was 'Bar-B-Q' and when MGM publicity
released photos of Lana Turner and John Garfield's love scene on the
beach, they got complaints from the Federal Council of Churches of
Christ in America about the film's sexual tone (also see attached
article). The films was banned in Indonesia, Switzerland and Spain.

Despite the theme being somewhat familiar in many movies since then the
book has actually been adapted for screen a number of times, including
twice before this 1946 adaptation:

Le Dernier Tournant (1939 French film) directed by Pierre Chenal
Ossessione (1943 Italian film) directed by Luchino Visconti
The Postman Always Rings Twice (1981 film) directed by Bob Rafelson
The Postman Always Rings Twice (1982 opera)
Szenvedély (1997 Hungary film) directed by Fehér György
Jerichow (2008 German film) directed by Christian Petzold (in German)

appeared in the Mirror (Perth, Western Australia) on Page 1 no less, on

*Of Human Bondage (1934) - Original Australian Long Daybill Movie Poster

*Of Human Bondage was directed by John Cromwell starred Leslie Howard
and is widely regarded by critics as the film that made Bette Davis a
star. The screenplay by Lester Cohen is based on the 1915 novel of the
same title by W. Somerset Maugham. The film was remade in 1946 and again
in 1964.

The film recorded a loss of $45,000.

Davis' efforts failed to impress Leslie Howard who, along with other
British cast members, was upset an American had been cast in the role.
"I really couldn't blame them," Davis stated. But his behaviour on the
set was upsetting. "Mr. Howard would read a book off-stage, all the
while throwing me his lines during my close-ups. He became a little less
detached when he was informed that the kid was walking away with the
picture." Bette Davis fully expected to be nominated for this, her
breakthrough performance in films. When she was denied an official
nomination, there was an attempt to make her a "write-in" candidate, a
practice now barred by the Academy.

Leslie Howard who played Ashley Wilkes in Gone With The Wind and also
appeared wonderfully in The Scarlet Pimpernel (1934) in the titular
role. was very involved in anti-Nazi propaganda in WWII, travelling
through Europe to support the war effort. He was killed in 1943, when
his plane was shot down by the Luftwaffe over the Bay of Biscay, and his
death continues to hold a mystery, as does his role in the fight against
the Nazis. Some believe he was working as a spy; others that he knew the
Germans were targeting his plane, yet chose to sacrifice himself to keep
the efficacy of British code-breakers from being discovered. He was 50
years old.

Please enjoy your sneak peak at this rare and highly sought after movie
poster being auctioned on www.Bidll.com on January 26th 2015; also
attached is a review of the film that appeared in The Newcastle Sun
(NSW, Australia) on Friday 19 October 1934.

From Sweden starring the German actress Lil Dagover, once declared the
most beautiful woman in Berlin...

*Matrimony (1927) - Original Australian Long Daybill Movie Poster
*
Matrimony: "A vivid love drama enacted amid the lumberlands of the
North" starring Lil Dagover and Gosta Ekman.

First released in Australia in 1929 it was originally released in Sweden
in 1927 under the title Hans Engelska Fru (released in the US as
*Discord* and *His English Wife* in the UK). Part of the film is set
among high society in London, with German actress Lil Dagover as a widow
once more attending dinner parties and charity events, while the rest is
set in the countryside of northern Sweden, where Finnish actor Urho
Somersalmi (most renowned for his performance as the stranger in
Stiller’s Johan) portrays a rich landowner who also happens to be the
main creditor of her family’s fortune.*

*The poster was produced by the famed Richardson Studio which was
founded by John Richardson in the early 1920s. He had been a poster
artist prior to this and had produced the artwork for a number of
posters for silent films during this era. In the very early 20s posters
produced by The Richardson Studio would carry a tag at the bottom of the
poster "Drawn by Richardson Studio" and later "The poster produced by
Richardson Studio". A very few posters have been found that bear the
signature of John Richardson and these are highly desired among poster
collectors around the world...

Please enjoy your sneak peak at this lovely piece being auctioned on
www.Bidll.com on January 26th 2015; I've also included a couple of
photographic images from the movie, the first from which (now obviously)
the poster was designed the second shows the director Gustaf Molander
instructing Lil Dagover and Urho Somersalmi during the shooting. *

*When Duty Calls (1926) - An Original Australian Long Daybill Movie Poster

*This silent feature was originally released in Germany in 1926 as *Der
Mann im Feuer* (literally: The Man in the Fire), it was released the UK
and its colonies in *1929* under the title *When Duty Calls*. The
director Erich Waschneck received the co-operation of the Berlin fire
brigade to obtain the many gigantic fire scenes in the UFA feature 'When
Duty Calls' shown in the first half of the film.

One reviewer in Adelaide, Australia in 1930 had cause to write "/Those
who remember the magnificent photography in the B.I.P Picture "Moulin
Rouge" /(1928) /will certainly look forward to the UFA Production, "When
Duty Calls", which was also photographed by Werner' Brandes
<http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0104634/?ref_=ttfc_fc_cr5>. The trick
photography in this feature plainly, shows marked signs of genius.//"//

//
//"The theme deals with a man who is discharged from the fire brigade,
because of his old age. Through the pleadings of his daughter to the
Superintendent Fix he is given a theory test whereby he may return to
his old job. How he falls In the test, but proves himself in a big
theatre fire will hold one entranced throughout the film. The cast is
filled by several popular players, including Henry Stuart, Helga
Thomas,//and Rudolf Rittner./"

Rudolf Rittner retired from theatre acting at the peak of his career in
1907 (aged just 38). However in 1922 he returned as actor in several
German movies, especially in Fritz Lang's 1924 silent masterpiece Die
Nibelungen with Rittner starring as Markgraf Rüdiger von Bechlarn.

*Hold 'em Yale (1928) - An Original Australian Long Daybill Movie Poster
(/The Only Poster Believed To Exist For This Title/)

*Hold ’Em Yale was the first of three films released by DeMille Pictures
in 1928 that paired director Edward Griffith and star Rod La Rocque. The
film was adapted from a 1906 stage play, At Yale, written by Pulitzer
Prize–winning playwright Owen Davis and heavily modified for the screen
by writer George Dromgold. Jaime Emmanuel Alvarado Montez (La Rocque), a
young man from “the Argentine,” heads to Yale University at the behest
of his father. He finds success on the football field and love in the
arms of a professor’s daughter, but must constantly evade a police
detective convinced that the collegian is a wanted criminal.

In the film’s climax, Montez has a chance to prove himself to his girl
and his classmates at the all-important Yale-Princeton game at the Yale
Bowl. Stock shots of the Bowl, filled with 70,000 football fans, are
intercut with close-up sequences of Montez and his teammates. According
to a New York Times note published during the production of the film,
“The famous Yale Bowl, the first of the huge football stadiums, makes
its screen début as a setting for a motion picture” in this film.

Hold ’Em Yale suffered in critics’ eyes as a just another entry in a
glut of college-themed films, a craze that had exploded with the release
of Harold Lloyd’s The Freshman in 1925. By 1928, at least a dozen
“college pictures” were being released each year, and Hold ’Em Yale
seems to have been lost among the flood.

A review of the film found in The Mecury (Hobart, Tasmania): "/... It Is
pure farce, and does not profess to be anything else. There are many
highly humorous situations, which arouse boundless mirth, and that is
enough to justify the production. Rod la Bocque is seen as a young man
from the Argentine, with plenty of money and energy, a combination which
lands him in all kinds of tight corners, from which ha escapes with
ridiculous ease in order, in the end, to win the heart of the girl for
whoso eyes he travelled from South America to Yale. There is a football
match to account for the title, but it is not as obtrusive as such games
are wont to be in American films. Rod Ia Rocque is largely helped by a
very clever monkey.//../"

Hold ’Em Yale was preserved in 2012 at Film Technology Company, Inc.
from a 35mm tinted nitrate release print provided by the New Zealand
Film Archive and is held in the files of the National Film Preservation
Foundation a non profit organization created by the U.S. Congress to
help save America's film heritage.

*Charlie Chaplin's The Gold Rush (1925) - An Original Australian Long
Daybill**; /believed to be the only/*/*Australian poster for this title
to come up up for auction*/.

Charles Spencer Chaplin was born in London in 1889; his mother, part
Irish, part Spanish, was playing there in a stock company. His father
was a small-time music hall favourite. Chaplin father died of natural
causes, and his widow (known to the boards as Lily Harley) went into
dressmaking, and taught Charles and his brother Sidney to hem flounces
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ruffle>.

At 13 however, he was taking juvenile parts. A British critic hailed him
as a baby wonder. A year later he was playing with William Gillette in
"Sherlock Holmes." He got a part in a vaudeville skit, "A Night in an
English Music Hall," and toured the U.S.A. In 1914 the Keystone Film
Corporation enlisted his services for 40 dollars a week.

His first efforts to be funny in celluloid were dismal. Keystone
directors, fearing that he was overpaid, offered to cancel the contract.
But one day Chaplin told Roscoe Arbuckle that he needed a pair of shoes
Arbuckle tossed him a pair of his own enormous brogues. "There you are,
man," he said; "perfect fit!" Chaplin put them on, cocked his battered
Derby over his ear, and twisted the ends of his prim moustache. His face
was very sad. He attempted a jaunty walk, which became, inevitably, a
heart-breaking waddle. He put his hand on the seat of his trousers, spun
on his heel. Arbuckle told him that he was almost funny...

*The Gold Rush*, was released in the USA in June of 1925 (there is
evidence that suggest it was being released in London in April 1925?)
and played around Australia from late 1925 enjoying it's first Melbourne
release in May 1926.

This silent comedy film was written, produced, directed by and starred
Charlie Chaplin in his Little Tramp role, Chaplin declared several times
that this was the film for which he most wanted to be remembered. In its
original 1925 release, The Gold Rush was generally praised by critics
and although a silent film, it received an Academy Awards nomination for
Best Sound Recording when Chaplin re-released it with a new sound track
in 1942.

Please enjoy your sneak peak at this fabulous poster (could this be an
advance movie poster?) which will be auctioned on www.Bidll.com on
January 26th 2015; I've also included a copy of an advert for the film I

*Mammy (1930) - An Original Australian Long Daybill
*
Mammy was Al Jolson's fourth feature, following earlier screen efforts
as The Jazz Singer (1927), The Singing Fool (1928) and Say It With Songs
(1929).

Originally named Asa Yoelson, Al was born in a log cabin in Srednik, a
small town in Lithuania - in 1889, Morris Yoelson, Asa's father,
emigrated to the USA alone. Five years later he brought his family to
Washington, D. C., where Yoelson was appointed cantor of a large
synagogue. His deepest ambition was that his youngest son should become
a great cantor, and he gave Asa singing lessons from the age of five.

When Asa was ten his mother died, and he became somewhat of a 'juvenile
delinquent', often playing truant to go to vaudeville shows, he hung out
a gang of what his father called “loafers.” (The “loafers” included a
skinny Negro lad with magic in his feet who grew up to become Bill
Robinson, greatest of all tap dancers.) In 1903, Asa, his brother Harry
and Joe Palmer did a singing-and-comedy vaudeville act. Harry played a
doctor, Asa a bellboy and Palmer a sick man in a wheel chair. James
Francis Dooley, a blackface monologuist, told Asa he would make a much
funnier bellboy if he put on burnt cork. “Blackface goes perfectly with
that southern accent of yours,” he explained. For the next 25 years Asa
was never seen on a stage in white face.

When the act broke up he changed his name to Al Jolson and played in the
West for five years. He began to develop his intimate style of singing,
his way of enfolding an audience to his bosom as if it were a single
giant human being. He also began acting out every song as if the words
and the melody had just occurred to him and were a genuine expression of
his feelings. His mannerism of getting down on one knee, however, was
prompted by a prosaic accident. One night an ingrown toenail hurt
unbearably. So Al knelt to get the pressure off his toe. The trick was
so effective that he adopted it permanently...

*The Phantom Stockman (1953) - A Rare Original Australian Daybill*

Captain Thunderbolt and The Phantom Stockman are the only Australian
features produced in 1953. Filmmaking was declared a non-essential
industry at the time and budgets in excess of £10,000 were not
permitted. Unable to realise large-scale projects each had been
planning, Chips Rafferty and Lee Robinson decided to collaborate on The
Phantom Stockman, a modestly-priced outback drama centred on a heroine
whose situation bears more than a passing resemblance to that of cattle
heiress Lady Sarah Ashley in Baz Luhrmann’s big budget ‘Aussie western’,
Australia (2008).

It was the beginning of a significant creative partnership between
Robinson and Rafferty, which also produced King of the Coral Sea (1954),
Walk Into Paradise (1956) and Dust in the Sun (1958). Australia’s most
popular actor in the immediate postwar era and an undisputed national
cinema icon, Rafferty spent ten years as a bushman before entering the
movies and is perfectly cast as the Sundowner. Fair-minded and morally
upright, the Sundowner is an Australian equivalent of the no-nonsense
cowboy in American westerns who rides gallantly into trouble and ‘sorts
things out’

Also noteworthy is a cameo by the great and influential Indigenous
painter Albert Namatjira. Namatjira appears as himself and is greeted by
the Sundowner as an old friend. This brief scene does not add much to
the story but is valuable as the artist’s sole feature film appearance.
A Sydney model making her film debut, Jeanette Elphick changed her
screen name to Victoria Shaw and enjoyed a successful American film and
television career with major roles in The Eddy Duchin Story (1956), The
Crimson Kimono (1959) and Alvarez Kelly (1966).

The Phantom Stockman was a major success. Prior to Australian release in
June 1953 it notched up £23,000 (more than double its budget) in
overseas sales. It played in the UK as Cattle Station and was retitled
Return of the Plainsman for its US release on 15 September 1953.

*The Air Mail Pilot**(1928) - An Original Long Daybill*

"Young air mail pilot arouses wrath of father of girl he loves, result
being that he is forbidden to see her. However, he finds that his rival
plans to rob the air mail. Villain makes haul, tries to shift blame on
others but airman and girl pursue him and bring him down to earth where
he gets his just deserts."

By the early 1920s the epic adventures of the young pilots who flew the
mail had already captured the public imagination. In 1921 the New York
Times paid tribute to the Postmaster-General and his pilots: "Aviation
owes a great deal to Otto Praegar...but American aviation owes far more
to these brave youngsters...who have attempted what has often seemed
impossible flying according to schedule in all weather..."

Probably the first film was The Great Air Robbery of 1919 but by the
early 1920s most studios were exploiting the subject, critics often
referring to them as up-to-date westerns. But given the dangers, the
excitement and its obvious appeal as a modern version of the legendary
Pony Express the film industry quickly saw commercial gain to be had on
the subject where daring and dashing pilots carried their mail to the
new frontier of the sky. Often the air mail service was merely a
background for daring robberies and spectacular stunt flying by the
pilot hero.

Like many*The Air Mail Pilot (1928)* included an airplane pursuit
climaxing in the hero jumping from one in-flight airplane to another and
a fight with the villain on the wings of the latter's airplane.

[MOPO] The Countdown - Sneak Peak #4

2015-01-05 Thread David Rew
Coming up is this re-release Australian Daybill for a movie some of you
may have heard of...

Often this has been dated as simply a R40s or even R47 - however there
was some good discussion online including adverts and articles which
leans towards an R49, read more here
<http://vintagemoviepostersforum.com/discussion/323/dating-the-casablanca-daybill/p1>.
Happy to hear anyone's thoughts...

Either way it's a great poster

[MOPO] The Countdown - Sneak Peak #3

2015-01-05 Thread David Rew
*When the Kellys Rode* is a 1934 Australian film directed by Harry
Southwell about one of our most (in)famous and most celebrated outlaws,
Ned Kelly. Even before the movie was released there were problems with
the police, the local constabulary feared it would fuel the fires of
rebellion amongst those who supported Ned and his gang and so the
release was banned in the Australian state of New South Wales.
Apparently protecting the populace from themselves was common practice
and film-makers were often forced into into compromises in order to gain
public release.

For instance, with the 1920 silent movie The Kelly Gang (1920) the
film-makers used intertitles <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intertitle>
to praise the police superintendent for his "bravery and intelligence".
Ned's demise was expressed as "such is the inevitable fate of all who
rebel against the righteous and mighty forces of law and order".

When the Kellys Rode finally had its FIRST season in Sydney in 1948 some
14 years after it was released generally in other parts opf Australia it
attracted quite a large crowd, which was quite a surpise to the
industry. But the reason was less flattering, it was not about the
censorship but the quality. Film Weekly described it as "bad enough to
serve as hilarious first half entertainment". The local paper, The Argus
described it as "unedifying and unconvincing". Fourteen years is a long
time between critics I guess...

And so from that 1948 release is this daybill, a wonderful piece of
Australia history and a great movie poster...

January 26th is Australia Day and starting that day will be a
special event dedicated to Australian film and Australian-printed

rare, highly desirable and much sought after movie posters ever
assembled with many pieces never seen at auction before. Now is a
great time to register <http://bidll.com/Account/Register>.

*Blackmail (1929) - An Original Australian Long Daybill*

<http://bidll.com/Account/Register>

*Some trivia about this movie:*

  * There were two versions made and released - a silent one and
a sound one, the silent one was released for those theatres
that weren't yet equipped for sound.
  * Interestingly the 'talkie' version was banned in Australia
when first released in October 1929 - this was appealed by
the distributors Cinema Arts Films Ltd.
  * In April 1930 Hitchcock was quoted: "RIDICULOUS," says .
Mr.Alfred Hitchcock, British International Pictures producer,
commenting on the statements relative to British films in the
report of the Commonwealth Chief Censor (Mr. O'Reilly)."It is
often complained that British films do not contain sufficient
sex appeal. The censor bans scenes in British films which he
permits to pass in American films of a similar type." Mr.
Hitchcock adds that British films are particularly clean
compared with American. He recalls that Australia alone took
exception to the talkie "Blackmail," which was accepted
throughout the rest of the world.
  * I believe I have found evidence that the talkie was released
in 1930, but I have yet to 100% cross check and confirm this.
  * The silent version of Blackmail actually ran longer in
theatres and proved more popular.
  * The film is often cited by film historians as the first truly
British "all-talkie" feature film
  * The silent version is with Sam Livesey as the Chief Inspector
and the sound version with Harvey Braban in the same role
  * It was Hitchcock's first sound/talkie movie as a director
  * The co-star villain was one Cyril Ritchard born Cyril
Trimnell-Ritchard in Surry Hills, Sydney, Australia.

[MOPO] FA - Belle Starr (1941); Jan 26 2015

2014-11-30 Thread David Rew

Hello All

We have been incredibly fortunate to have this beautiful daybill
consigned for our Australia Day Auction
<http://bidll.com/Australia_Day_Auction_2015.html>. There wouldn't be
many who wouldn't agree that Gene Tierney was one of the more exquisite
looking actresses of her time and this very rare daybill does nothing to
harm that reputation.

<http://bidll.com/Australia_Day_Auction_2015.html>

Our Australia Day Auction
<http://bidll.com/Australia_Day_Auction_2015.html> is probably the first
of its type, and there has unlikely been such a fine collection of
wonderful and rare pieces of this type for auction anywhere before. If
you are a buyer then don't forget to register here
<http://bidll.com/Account/Register>, if you would like to be a seller we
are accepting ONLY items that is Australian movie memorabilia (produced
and/or printed in Australia) AND/OR memorabilia for AUSTRALIAN movies
will be accepted. e.g. A Daybill for Casablanca (1942) is acceptable as
is a USA1SH for The Delinquents (1989) but a USA1SH for The Time Machine
(starring Australian Rod Taylor is not).

*Sellers [Info]: ZERO listing fee and just 6% selling fee; seller may

What Alan said.

And further, it's ridiculous that in this day and age bigotry extends to

[MOPO] [FYI] Design Update to BIDLL - Image ZOOM

2014-11-21 Thread David Rew
Responding to suggestions we have updated our site so that images now
have a zoom on hover feature (zooms to 2000px) rather than the smaller
popup window we had previously.

We recommend sellers load images that are 2000px (on its longest side)
and optimise it to be less than 400kb (to ensure you can upload your
images quickly).

We continue to upgrade where we can based on suggestions and feedback.

Enjoy

If a consortium were to pool resources and then sell through an

The problem would be if Joe Schmo wants X for himself and Charlie
Farnsbarn wants Y for himself it comes down then to valuing the items
that would be for personal collections

[MOPO] [FA] Bidll's Blue Ribbon Movie Poster & Memorabilia Event of the Year!

2014-11-16 Thread David Rew
*Worldwide Release: BIDLL.com, the world's fastest growing online
auction & classifieds website (by the collector for the collector), is
bringing together an amazing line-up of movie memorabilia for a very
special event. *

<http://bidll.com/Australia_Day_Auction_2015.html>

*_*All items will either be memorabilia from Australian movies OR movie
memorabilia made and/or printed in Australia - a very unique auction
with highly collectible pieces!**_/

/Consign Today!*

 * Sellers only pay a flat 6% of the hammer price (and /no charge to
list/) - buyers can get a bargain and sellers can earn more than if
they consigned and sold it for the same price elsewhere!
 * Sellers are consigning 'virtually' so there is no cost to the seller
to send us the poster (no need to pay for insurance either), and no
   sale, no charge!
 * There are amazing items for auction, some without reserves and some
with; you the seller decides not us!
 * Sellers get paid instantly because the buyer deals directly with you
the seller (you need a PayPal account).
 * There will be media exposure and probably a little hype on our
   behalf too...

** If you think you have material that qualifies and are interested in
consigning please feel free to email me with your questions and/or for
more details.*

If you don't have memorabilia that qualifies for this event why not add
some products on BIDLL now, this event will be generating a lot of
visitors to *BIDLL* over the following weeks, even before the auction
event goes live, undoubtedly many will also pause and see what else is
available on BIDLL if you don't have product there then it won't get
seen! Remember, /you can place a standard listing for FREE/ on *BIDLL*...

Re: [MOPO] Talk About Timing...

2014-11-14 Thread David Rew

Interesting discussions all.

Yes, I have managed to get my bidll business and my hobby of movie
poster collecting in the news but I truly doubt that is a bad thing even
if people want to punch holes in the how I have achieved it. I have
appreciated the messages of support for the website both public and
private and I am sure there have been many more emails flying around
criticising what I am doing as well, but that is the way of the world.

I understand I am not a 'lifer' as some would put it so no, I have not
been in the 'business' of the hobby for very long so perhaps some see me
as a whipper snapper upsetting the status quo. Nor I am not the world's
best marketer or the best web designer either, yet I have always been
happy to share what little I do know of web design and/or SEO etc freely
(and/or in private) with those who care to listen or ask, because as I
whiz past my 54th year I feel I have few experiences/skills and I am
always happy to share.

I guess the bottom line is I /am/ offering something a little different
that is absolutely no risk and no cost to the seller and if people don't
want to bother with it then that is fine however, if people want to give
it a go then I welcome you too (with open arms and a man hug). Now, if I
manage to create interest in my site AND the hobby in general with
people who are not the regulars in the hobby through whatever legal
means at my disposal then that is good for those who are a part of it,
and so let's enjoy the ride because I am having fun!

...and watch this space.

Truly, have a great week-end everyone.

     regards,

Re: [MOPO] Talk About Timing...

2014-11-13 Thread David Rew

Marketing.

After 30 years in it ones learns how to do it. That said, it doesn't
always work. Sometimes success is just luck but it's all about getting
the message out there, some is free, some costs money. And rarely does
one get a free write-up in a newspaper (when promoting a business) so
you better have an angle, of course it's certainly lucky that eBay made
that statement today, I didn't ask them to time their admission with
some of my media that is coming out. Will it pay dividends? Who knows,
it won't hurt, and I am now riding that horse a little harder at the moment.

Strike. Iron. Hot

Also, I've never been afraid of spending money on advertising, it's not
a bad word it's good business.

[MOPO] Bidll in the News

2014-11-10 Thread David Rew
I have been rung by a newspaper for them to come around and do an
interview tomorrow (and take some photos, groan), obviously I will be
giving BIDLL <http://bidll.com/> a good plus and with Christmas just
round the corner I will be mentioning what a great present an original
vintage movie poster or original movie memorabilia will make (along with
all the other collectables the site offers).

It therefore goes without saying (even though I am), now is as good a
time as any to make sure you have the right products (and at the right
prices!) online both in Auction and in Classified section on BIDLL.

I look forward to you joining your fellow collectors and sellers on

Re: [MOPO] [FA] Rebel Rousers (1970) and a question

2014-11-07 Thread David Rew

A little more sleuthing...

Seems the seller has a letter (to her father-in-law) dated Sept 1984, on
Trans-Continental Film Corp letterhead which simply states:

/"Ron Brown has suggested I forward the enclosed posters. Hoping to hear
from you in this connection"/

The letter is signed Larry Joachim, and here is he:
http://variety.com/2014/film/people-news/larry-joachim-distributor-of-kung-fu-films-dies-at-88-1201022509/

All I could find on Trans-Continental Film Corp was here
<http://www.imdb.com/company/co0040232/?ref_=fn_al_co_7>, and it seems
they were a USA distributor and they seemed to specialise in martial
arts films, and that seems to link tidily with the other posters this
sellers has (that arrived came with the letter):

Re: [MOPO] [FA] Rebel Rousers (1970) and a question

2014-11-06 Thread David Rew

Thanks Tom

We'll discuss it with the seller and get it changed to a R-76. I guess I
am curious as to why re-release info for the title isn't anywhere to be
found.

thank-you

I also should have said this is a re-titled R-1976 poster with a title
change. It was made to promote "Rebel Rousers" which Jack made in
1967. This poster was released to ride on the popularity of Jack
Nicholson's Cuckoo's Nest recent Oscar wins.

A poster has been listed and I wonder if anyone can shed some
light on it because the title on the poster is not what the film was.

Rather than explain it twice, click on the image to view the
listing and the seller's description.
