Things have certainly changed since I started. I didn't use photographs for the
first year (computer illiterate at the time) but still managed to sell plenty
of posters for good prices in the early days on descriptions alone.

Despite the fees, etc, things have moved along pretty well and eBay is still a
good place to do business.

Close but no cigar for me.

Planetbiz since Jan 11 1997

The biggest regret for me is that I was trying to build my own website for
auctions at that time but I was too busy with my regular job as a Systems
Consultant to make any progress. I was buying comic books at the time via
phone auctions and was tremendously frustrated by the clunky process. I
remember talking to one of my programmers, reviewing my design specifications
and having him prototype a few pages. I then discovered that there were a
few "cheap" or "free" websites already out there, so I just shelved the
project. I was wondering how these guys could afford to host these sites
and didn't really understand the potential business model. Ah well, coulda,
woulda, shoulda..

I will draw that person at random, and if lots of people reply to this

Just put down your eBay ID and the date (month, day, and year) your ID

checked) and post it to MoPo.

I don't really remember when I first signed on to eBay. It seems
like I've been buying things there forever, although I'm sure it's
been less time than for most of you. Is there someplace on the

Re: [MOPO] How long have you had your eBay ID? A cool prize to the 'oldest' here!

2007-12-12 Thread Walton, Jeffrey
Well I have you all beatit was my broken laser printer that was the
first piece of crap ever to be auctioned off on what was then called
AuctionWeb in August of 95...it was really more of a test of some code
that I told Pierre Omidyar would never work. In fact the code really
didn't work, there were two bidders at the time and it was in a real
heated battle, $7.65, then $8.32, $11.15, then came $12.69 (doesn't
anybody bid in round numbers anymore), then $14.63...then nothingthe
site went down and the auction ended early. What the hell? I think
that broken laser printer could have reached well into the upper
stratosphere of the high teens...we'll never know...we'll never know.
>From there we took down Pierre's page regarding the ebola virus and
AuctionWeb took over the entire domain. AuctionWeb...now that was a
good name I came up with...tells you the whole storyit's an auction
on the web d'uh.but noPierre the lazy man that he was, was tired
of typing (and he is such a bad typist) in the long
URLwww.auctionWeb.com into netscape 1.0what can I say, he was
really lazy, so he opted for ebay against my better judgment...it was an
even shorter version of his consulting company Echo Bay. eBay...yeah
like that will flywell I can admit when I'm wrongbut Pierre is
still lazy he never did fix his piece of crap code and the auctions
continue to end at a specific time to this very day. Really, it's only
a one line code change. We had a falling out somewhere in 1996 when he
wanted to allow pictures on the siteyou know how much memory a
picture can take upthat was the last strawuntil I caught the bug
to laser print on larger pieces of paper. In the early days it was
tough finding big sheets of paper and a friend turned me onto the back
of old movie posters...lo and behold there were now ten maybe twenty
movie posters being sold weekly on my ex-friend's site. So I signed up
as an alias on March 10th, 1999 under invasionofthesaucermen and the
rest as they say is historymy printing bug continued and I found out
I could get good quality paper overseas and instead of printing on movie
posters I began to print movie postersonly problem was my printer
was only 14 inches wide so the insert was a natural choice...so were
titles like Jaws, Blade Runner, and Star Warsyeah it's late in the
game for me...no stock optionsbut you can still make great money on
ebay especially if the stuff you sell is minty white.

Oh, so close.

I registered back on April 9, 1997 as [EMAIL PROTECTED], then
changed it to the much more cryptic chunter_at_umaryland_dot_edu when
eBay got nervous of people contacting each other outside their closed
system and made us all drop our email addresses, lest we make a
private deal without eBay getting its proverbial pound of flesh.
Those were indeed the days, frantically sniping with my 2400 baud
modem on my venerable Mac Quadra 700 (25 MHz 68040/4 Mb RAM/100 Mb
hard drive). I think it took almost a minute to refresh each page so
timing was an art to put it mildly.

Just put down your eBay ID and the date (month, day, and year) your ID was
first registered with eBay (no use trying to fib, since it is easily

On March 9th, 2008, I will have the 10th anniversary of my eBay ID,
emovieposter.com. I plan on having some kind of celebration (I don't know that
too many PowerSellers make it to 10 years) and giving some great prizes to my
29,000+ customers.

That got me thinking. Who among us here on MoPo has had their eBay ID (the
one they bid with OR sell with) the longest? I will give whoever posts on this
thread with the oldest eBay ID (by one week from now) a free set of all 27 of
my in-print full-color movie poster books (a $529.96 retail value), AND I will
give at another set to one person who posts their "anniversary date" here (no
matter how new or old). I will draw that person at random, and if lots of
people reply to this thread with their anniversary dates, I will give SEVERAL
sets!

These sets of books are great for anyone who likes old movies, but even if
you don't, you can put them on eBay and sell them yourself, or you can give
them away as stocking stuffers, or whatever. Why am I doing this? Just tonight
I sold enough ($152,000+) to make 2007 my record selling year ever, and I
thought I would "share my joy" with some of you here!

Just put down your eBay ID and the date (month, day, and year) your ID was
first registered with eBay (no use trying to fib, since it is easily checked)
and post it to MoPo.

Hey, I'm STILL on dial-up!!! I've been trying to get Comcast to

Furthermore, my first home computer had only 16 kilobytes of RAM! And
we had to save our data onto audio cassette tapes!

And this was before VCRs were popular, so if I wanted to watch a film
like Walkabout, I had to get up at 2:00 in the morning, because
that's the only time my local station showed it!

my in-print full-color movie poster books (a $529.96 retail value), AND I will
give at another set to one person who posts their "anniversary date" here (no
matter how new or old).

Subject: [MOPO] How long have you had your eBay ID? A cool prize to the
'oldest' here!

On March 9th, 2008, I will have the 10th anniversary of my eBay ID,
emovieposter.com. I plan on having some kind of celebration (I don't know
that too many PowerSellers make it to 10 years) and giving some great prizes
to my 29,000+ customers.

That got me thinking. Who among us here on MoPo has had their eBay ID (the
one they bid with OR sell with) the longest? I will give whoever posts on
this thread with the oldest eBay ID (by one week from now) a free set of all
27 of my in-print full-color movie poster books (a $529.96 retail value),

I remember back in the day when I got real deals on ebay...as I look around for
my teeth...you whippersnappers complain about sniping programs! I had to bid
and reload back when all we had was dial-up! Dial-up, you pansies! With only
5 megs of memory! In the snow! Both ways!

"jangofettclone" ebay ID registered March 11, 1997.

I changed the name from my email to jangofettclone somewhere around 2000 I
guess.
