[mou-net] Windy day of hawkwatching in Duluth
Today was a very blustery day of counting raptors, with the wind gusting up to 39mph, and temperatures (at Thompson Hill) just maxing out at the freezing point. Despite the harsh conditions, some raptors did move through the area. I counted 72 raptors today, which raised our season's total to just over 4,500 as of today :-) https://www.hawkcount.org/day_summary.php?rsite=543&ryear=2011&rmonth=04&rday=14 I've added a few new photos to my 2011 spring raptor count gallery, which can be found below: http://www.pbase.com/birdfedr/duluth_spring_raptor_count_2011 One of the biggest highlights of the day was seeing a SHARP-SHINNED HAWK diving on a distant NORTHERN GOSHAWK. It was nice to see a goshawk, as the last one observed this spring was nearly two weeks ago. Here is a photo of a Northern Goshawk taken at Hawk Ridge two years ago. Enjoy! http://www.pbase.com/birdfedr/image/119465434 Good birdwatching, Erik Bruhnke Duluth, MN *NATURALLY AVIAN* www.pbase.com/birdfedr www.naturallyavian.blogspot.com birdf...@gmail.com Join or Leave mou-net: http://lists.umn.edu/cgi-bin/wa?SUBED1=mou-net Archives: http://lists.umn.edu/archives/mou-net.html

At Itasca SP on April 8, there was RUFFED GROUSE, and EASTERN PHOEBE. 15 EVENING GROSBEAKS and several PURPLE FINCHES are visiting her feeder 5 miles north of the park. [mou-net] Swainson's Hawks, Goodhue Cty, Sunset Trail & Wild Turkey Rd.
After spending a part of this cold, windy day birding with Craig Mandel's group on a very enjoyable Goodhue Cty field trip, I stopped to check for Red -headed Woodpeckers on Wild Turkey Road at about 5:30 pm. I didn't find any RHWO's, but I immediately saw, perched in a tree along Sunset Trail, close to the Wild Turkey Road turnoff, two Swainson's Hawks. Jim Otto originally found a Swainson's Hawk in this area on June 2, 2010, which was seen by at least three other birders and myself in 2010 through July. A sighting of 2 Swainson's Hawk in Goodhue Cty was also made in July , and I saw a Swainson's near Cannon Falls, in Goodhue Cty, in September, 2010. [mou-net] Chippewa Co MN WW Scoter Refound
This evening the first winter male White-winged Scoter was refound on Shakopee Lake in north central Chippewa County, MN. The bird was initially found on Tuesday, April 12 by Dan & Pam Guynn and included in their seasonally report for the day. Bill J. Unzen reported two White-winged Scoters on Shakopee Lake yesterday morning. After concluding an unsuccessful 1 hour + search of the lake from Chippewa County Park # 1 which borders the lake on the east side I decided to scan the lake form the south side before heading back to Willmar. The WW Scoter was observed from 70th Street NE at 7:50 p.m. The bird when seen was not with any other waterfowl. Also seen on the lake from Chippewa County Park # 1 were 8 Horned Grebes along with a variety of other waterfowl. [mou-net] Friendly reminder from a Dakota County hermit (not a thrush)
I've noticed a flurry of reports recently wherein the poster mentions a locality such as a local or county park but fails to say in which county the site is located. Few, if any of us, know where all of these sites are located throughout the state. Remembering to include the county name in the subject is a good habitat to get into. We live on Glen Lake (just northwest of the intersection of Hwy 62 and 494). We see osprey over the lake off and on during most breeding seasons, and I have often wondered if they are the ones from that nest. This year, I marked my calendar when I saw a pair riding thermals over this neighborhood and calling on the 10th. One was here again on Tuesday, apparently fishing on the lake. This morning I scoped out the same 3 Lakes Harriet, Calhoun, & Nokomis as yesterday counting Horned Grebes. To my surprise there had been an explosion of Horned Grebes and the numbers had tripled overnight and the total was now "576" on the lakes. [mou-net] Cool YB Sapsucker photos, raptor migration, and more!
Yesterday's hawk count was slightly slower, with a flight of raptors that ended relatively early in the day (around 3pm). A noteworthy Dark-eyed Junco movement was observed, as these cute little guys were hanging out throughout much of the day, in addition to the new-to-the-season Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers. The photos of the sapsuckers (below), in addition to the Red-tailed Hawk photos are some of my best shots this spring so far :-) Relatively strong and gusty NE winds in the works for today, with this front collision, I'm curious what will fly by before the expected snow this weekend! [mou-net] California and Glaucous Gulls in Stevens, White-winged Scoters in Chippewa.
At 6PM Wednesday there was an adult California Gull at Clear Lake SW of the town of Alberta in Stevens County. Also at Clear Lake was a 1st-cycle Glaucous Gull standing on the ice. Also of note were 2 White-winged Scoters on Shakopee lake in north-central Chippewa County earlier in the day. -- Bill J. Unzen Lac Qui Parle County. [mou-net] Hand held puppets
Do you know where I might purchase hand-held puppets of birds. I have one puppet of a Puffin. I use my puffin puppet when I greet members and friends who have come to worship God on Sunday morning. Many of those so greeted respond cheerfully. Rev. Forest V. Strnad Farfibault, Mn..
