[mou-net] Windy day of hawkwatching in Duluth

2011-04-14 Thread Erik Bruhnke
Today was a very blustery day of counting raptors, with the wind gusting up
to 39mph, and temperatures (at Thompson Hill) just maxing out at the
freezing point. Despite the harsh conditions, some raptors did move through
the area. I counted 72 raptors today, which raised our season's total to
just over 4,500 as of today :-)
https://www.hawkcount.org/day_summary.php?rsite=543&ryear=2011&rmonth=04&rday=14

I've added a few new photos to my 2011 spring raptor count gallery, which
can be found below:
http://www.pbase.com/birdfedr/duluth_spring_raptor_count_2011

One of the biggest highlights of the day was seeing a SHARP-SHINNED HAWK
diving on a distant NORTHERN GOSHAWK. It was nice to see a goshawk, as the
last one observed this spring was nearly two weeks ago. Here is a photo of a
Northern Goshawk taken at Hawk Ridge two years ago. Enjoy!

Good birdwatching,

Reports: 1-800-542-3992 (weekdays during business hours)
Compiler: Jeanie Joppru (ajjop...@q.com)

This is the Northwest Minnesota Birding Report for Thursday, April 14,
2011 sponsored by the Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce. You
may also hear this report by calling (218)847-5743 or 1-800-433-1888.

After a week long teaser, the weather in the northwest is reverting to
late fall, early winter conditions with snow forecast for tomorrow.
Judging from the bird's activities, maybe it won't be so bad as all are
very busy preparing to raise families. Every day more and more species
are returning.

Connie Cox reported from Clearwater County. On April 6 , she saw WILD
TURKEYS displaying along MN 92. At Itasca SP on April 8, there was
RUFFED GROUSE, and EASTERN PHOEBE. 15 EVENING GROSBEAKS and several
PURPLE FINCHES are visiting her feeder 5 miles north of the park. On
April 11 WOOD DUCKS came back to the park.

Maggie Anderson reported from Agassiz NWR this week. Species mentioned
included GREAT EGRET. DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANT, SHARP-SHINNED HAWK,
COOPER'S HAWK, AMERICAN COOT, WILSON'S SNIPE, BELTED KINGFISHER, FOX
SPARROW, AMERICAN TREE SPARROW. AMERICAN WHITE PELICANS appeared on
April 11, and FRANKLIN'S GULLS, AMERICAN BITTERN, BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT
HERON, and WOOD DUCK on April 12. A MARBLED GODWIT was seen southeast of
the refuge. A good variety of ducks of most of the common species has
returned to the refuge.

On April 7 , Shelley Steva found an AMERICAN BLACK DUCK in the ditch
along Pennington CR 3 near the Polk County line. Here at our place near
Thief River Falls, on April 9, WOOD DUCK, COMMON GOLDENEYE, and 100's of
DARK-EYED JUNCOS were seen. On April 9, WILD TURKEYS were seen
displaying along CR 7 and an EASTERN BLUEBIRD was at the same spot.
April 10 brought FOX SPARROW, April 13 a YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER, and
April 14 , HOODED MERGANSER, AMERICAN COOT, and AMERICAN TREE SPARROW.

During the course of an owl survey, along the Pennington- Red Lake
County line on April 11, I heard RUFFED GROUSE, SANDHILL CRANES,
KILLDEER, and AMERICAN WOODCOCK in Red Lake County.

Sandy Aubol in Polk County reported TUNDRA SWANS, FOX SPARROW, and
AMERICAN TREE SPARROW on April 8. Donna and Leon Thoreson this week saw
350 TUNDRA SWANS, a variety of ducks, AND BELTED KINGFISHER in the
county on April 10. Sandy Aubol found a SHORT-EARED OWL in a tree across
from the East Grand Forks wastewater treatment ponds on April 12. Other
species included HOODED MERGANSER, and AMERICAN KESTREL. Shelley Steva
saw a BREWER'S BLACKBIRD in East Grand Forks on April 7. I heard
AMERICAN WOODCOCKS on the night of April 11 near the intersection of
Pennington, Polk, and Red Lake Counties west of Pennington CR 12.

Gary Otnes found a BLACK-BILLED MAGPIE in Mahnomen County on April 9.

Marshall Howe reported all three species on mergansers - HOODED
MERGANSER, COMMON MERGANSER, and RED-BREASTED MERGANSER at Little Sand
Lake on April 9; on that day a HOARY REDPOLL appeared at his feeder near
Dorset.

Alma Ronningen in Otter Tail County reported EASTERN PHOEBE on April 12,
GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLET, WHITE-THROATED SPARROW, and FOX SPARROW on April
13, and still some COMMON REDPOLLS on April 14. Bob Dunlap with a group
of other birders found an AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER in southwest Otter Tail
County, and 25 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS in Deer Creek on April 8. Brad and Dee
Ehlers observed AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN, COMMON LOON, PURPLE MARTIN, and
PIED-BILLED GREBE on April 8, GREAT EGRETS, and CHIPPING SPARROW on
April 10. OSPREY returned to the nest site on April 14. Tim Smith
reported AMERICAN KESTREL, and LAPLAND LONGSPUR on April 14.

Large numbers of waterfowl were seen by Bob Dunlap and his group in
southern Wilkin County on April 10. Gary Otnes observed GREATER SCAUP,
TUNDRA SWAN, and CALIFORNIA GULL in the county on that day.

Thanks to all the folks, too numerous to mention, who sent in their
sightings this week.

[mou-net] Swainson's Hawks, Goodhue Cty, Sunset Trail & Wild Turkey Rd.

2011-04-14 Thread Laura Coble
After spending a part of this cold, windy day birding with Craig Mandel's group
on a very enjoyable Goodhue Cty field trip, I stopped to check for Red -headed
Woodpeckers on Wild Turkey Road at about 5:30 pm. I didn't find any RHWO's,
but I immediately saw, perched in a tree along Sunset Trail, close to the Wild
Turkey Road turnoff, two Swainson's Hawks.

Jim Otto originally found a Swainson's Hawk in this area on June 2, 2010,
which was seen by at least three other birders and myself in 2010 through July.
A sighting of 2 Swainson's Hawk in Goodhue Cty was also made in July , and I
saw a Swainson's near Cannon Falls, in Goodhue Cty, in September, 2010.

[mou-net] Chippewa Co MN WW Scoter Refound

2011-04-14 Thread Ron Erpelding
This evening the first winter male White-winged Scoter was refound on
Shakopee Lake in north central Chippewa County, MN. The bird was initially
found on Tuesday, April 12 by Dan & Pam Guynn and included in their
seasonally report for the day. Bill J. Unzen reported two White-winged
Scoters on Shakopee Lake yesterday morning.

After concluding an unsuccessful 1 hour + search of the lake from Chippewa
County Park # 1 which borders the lake on the east side I decided to scan
the lake form the south side before heading back to Willmar. The WW Scoter
was observed from 70th Street NE at 7:50 p.m. The bird when seen was not
with any other waterfowl.

Also seen on the lake from Chippewa County Park # 1 were 8 Horned Grebes
along with a variety of other waterfowl.

Directions:

* Chippewa County Park # 1/Shakopee Lake is located near the northern
border of central Chippewa County
* The park is approximately 20 miles west of Willmar, MN on MN Hwy 40
and 2 miles north on Co Rd 4.
* The entrance to the park is on the west side of Co Rd. 4.
* 70th Street NE is also located on the west side of Co Rd 4,
approximately 1.25 miles north of MN HWY 40

Ron Erpelding

Kandiyohi County

p.s. Horned Grebes were also seen in eastern Swift County approximately 1.5
miles west of the Kandiyohi County western border on the west side of Monson
Lake State Park.

2011-04-14 Thread Doug Kieser
This evening there were 195 Horned, and 1 Eared Grebe on Orchard Lake,
Lakeville. Thankfully the Eared Grebe was considerably closer than the
majority of the Horned Grebes.
Also present were 2 Ruddy Ducks and a few Lesser Scaup.

[mou-net] Friendly reminder from a Dakota County hermit (not a thrush)

2011-04-14 Thread James P. Mattsson
I've noticed a flurry of reports recently wherein the poster mentions a
locality such as a local or county park but fails to say in which county the
site is located. Few, if any of us, know where all of these sites are located
throughout the state. Remembering to include the county name in the subject is
a good habitat to get into. Thanks and keep those posts coming in.

Nice mix of waterfowl today including all three mergansers in one field of view
in my binoculars. That's the first time I can recall ever seeing all three in
one location, let alone associating that closely with one another. There were
also 8 c. loons and one red-necked grebe.

2011-04-14 Thread Ben Harste
At 1:00 PM the Grebes were still visible from the Old Cedar Ave Bridge
parking lot. I counted around 100 Horned Grebes, the lone Red-necked Grebe
and 4 or so Ruddy Ducks swimming on the fringes of the group. They are not
too far out, but bringing a scope is a good idea because they are a little
ways out and bobbing up and down in the water.

We live on Glen Lake (just northwest of the intersection of Hwy 62 and 494). We
see osprey over the lake off and on during most breeding seasons, and I have
often wondered if they are the ones from that nest. This year, I marked my
calendar when I saw a pair riding thermals over this neighborhood and calling
on the 10th. One was here again on Tuesday, apparently fishing on the lake.

[mou-net] Osprey at the intersection of HWY 212 and 169

2011-04-14 Thread Terence Brashear
On my drive home last night, Wednesday, April 13, 2011, I saw a lone Osprey
circling the area where the light pole with the nest used to be.  I drive this
route everyday and this is the first time I have seen an Osprey this year in
that area.

[mou-net] Horned Grebe explosion in Minneapolis ~ Hennepin Co.

2011-04-14 Thread connybrun...@earthlink.net
This morning I scoped out the same 3 Lakes Harriet, Calhoun, & Nokomis as
yesterday counting Horned Grebes. To my surprise there had been an explosion
of Horned Grebes and the numbers had tripled overnight and the total was now
"576" on the lakes. I had to remind myself that it was spring several times as
I stood on the beach with a stiff below freezing windchill blowing at me. It
was exciting to see that many Horned Grebes on just those 3 lakes here in the
Metro.

[mou-net] Cool YB Sapsucker photos, raptor migration, and more!

2011-04-14 Thread Erik Bruhnke
Yesterday's hawk count was slightly slower, with a flight of raptors that
ended relatively early in the day (around 3pm). A noteworthy Dark-eyed Junco
movement was observed, as these cute little guys were hanging out throughout
much of the day, in addition to the new-to-the-season Yellow-bellied
Sapsuckers. The photos of the sapsuckers (below), in addition to the
Red-tailed Hawk photos are some of my best shots this spring so far :-)
Relatively strong and gusty NE winds in the works for today, with this front
collision, I'm curious what will fly by before the expected snow this
weekend!

[mou-net] California and Glaucous Gulls in Stevens, White-winged Scoters in Chippewa.

2011-04-14 Thread Bill Unzen
At 6PM Wednesday there was an adult California Gull at Clear Lake SW of the
town of Alberta in Stevens County. Also at Clear Lake was a 1st-cycle
Glaucous Gull standing on the ice.

Also of note were 2 White-winged Scoters on Shakopee lake in north-central
Chippewa County earlier in the day.

[mou-net] Hand held puppets

2011-04-14 Thread Forest Strnad
Do you know where I might purchase hand-held puppets of birds.  I have one
puppet of a Puffin. I use my puffin puppet when I greet members and friends who
have come to worship God on Sunday morning. Many of those so greeted respond
cheerfully.
