Security problem

2002-08-29 Thread Daniel's Lists

*This message was transferred with a trial version of CommuniGate(tm) Pro*
I installed Mac OS X 10.2 this last weekend and since then I've been
having some problems with the security on the MySQL files. I thought
that I had everything fixed, but now when my web users try and update
or insert a record in one of my files, it doesn't actually update
anything. I've checked the mysql.log and mysql.err and there isn't any
kind of error listed. Selects work just fine.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks,

MySQL 4.0 and LIKE "%string%"

2002-08-29 Thread Florin Andrei

Quote from the "How MySQL Uses Indexes" document:

MySQL 4.0 does another optimisation on LIKE. If you use ... LIKE
"%string%" and string is longer than 3 characters, MySQL will use the
Turbo Boyer-Moore algorithm to initialise the pattern for the string and
then use this pattern to perform the search quicker.

Does this optimisation depend on the existence of an index on that
column, or is it used even without an index?

Either way, how big is the speed improvement?

Our queries are running extremely slow on Solaris server while it is

Has anybody encountered such problem before?

Do you have any copyright / DRM-enable-able content on your machine?

I thought the understanding within the nt administrator community was to boycott
sp3 until M$ revised their EULA to revert ownership back to the organization /

Problem with Tables...

2002-08-29 Thread Tony Devlin

I have a problem with MySQL. I am trying to insert data using INFILE, and
it works, except that it ALWAYS stop at 255 (autoindex) and will not go any
further, either by manual insert or textfile insert. I am running MySQL
3.23.38-max-nt on a Windows 2000 Server.

Is this a known issue? something I can fix? configure problem?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hi everyone,
I am running a FreeBSD server with MySQL 3.23
I want to let my virtual users create/drop tables and limit the size of each
table, and also the number of tables they can create.

Can someone please tell me how I can do this?
Is it possible wit applications such as webmin, or phpMyAdmin?

Thanks so much

OPTIMIZE TABLE, is it safe?

2002-08-29 Thread Alek Beynenson

I have several large MyISAM tables that are frequently updated by certain
events in the application. I find that the queries get considerably slower
over time, and I run OPTIMIZE TABLE to defragment the datafiles. The user
comments on http://www.mysql.com/doc/en/OPTIMIZE_TABLE.html seem to indicate
that OPTIMIZE TABLE has been known to crash the datafiles (which versions?)
though I have never experienced that myself.

I'm now considering running OPTIMIZE TABLE on a few key tables immediately
after the application does something that fragments the datafile. Locking
of the table is not an issue. However, backing up (dump) those tables every
time before running OPTIMIZE TABLE would be difficult to implement. The
application would have to create backups, detect weather OPTIMIZE TABLE
crashed the tables, then try to restore from backups if it did.

My question is whether you have experienced crashes due to OPTIMIZE TABLE?
Have there been any recent bug fixes pertaining to OPTIMIZE TABLE? Any other
suggestions?

I currently run Ver 3.23.47-max-debug on Windows 2000.

Alek

The binary update logs. They serve as a record of updated, to be used
for two primary purposes:
- To be sent to slave replication servers
- To be used for data recovery purposes after a crash

The rei-bin.index file is an index of the binary log files. It records
which binary logs the server is maintaining.

Reinstall your MySQL service using mysqld((-max)-nt) --install
SP3 somehow manages to remove the service registration in some cases.

IIRC, mysqladmin allows you to change your password yourself, so this
should be possible for any application. I guess it uses SET:

  SET PASSWORD FOR jeffrey@"%" = PASSWORD('biscuit');

The manual says about this "Set the password for the current user. Any
non-anonymous user can change his own password!"

You need SELECT privilege to use restrict your query via WHERE clause
(because the WHERE has to do an equivalent of an SELECT implicitly).

Even if you could have it that way (allowing WHERE on UPDATE without
select privelege), this would only provide a small threshold. This
came up some time ago (oops, July 1999 ;), and my answer was this:

  http://marc.theaimsgroup.com/?l=mysql&m=93121950516543&w=2

The summary is that you could figure out the password with less than
100 queries, so, it would be quite useless.

Oh. Okay, in this case SET PASSWORD is not appliable to your case. :-(
Thought you were talking about pure database users.

Hm. If you change to GRANT, and create a database user for each real
user, I think SET PASSWORD could do what you want.

However, maybe I completely misunderstand your requirements.

Benjamin.

Hello,

Reinstall your MySQL service using mysqld((-max)-nt) --install
SP3 somehow manages to remove the service registration in some cases.

I'm a bit confused here.. dates are not my strong point..
I have a table with a date column in it (DATE datatype)

a few values:
mysql> select dte from images\G
*** 1. row ***

*** 2. row ***
dte: 2001-08-29
*** 3. row ***

*** 6. row ***
dte: 2002-10-29
*** 7. row ***
dte: 1999-08-29
7 rows in set (0.00 sec)

When I impose a where condition on the date column (without using
single quotes around my target date, I still get all records):

mysql> select dte from images where dte>2002-09-20\G
*** 1. row ***
dte: 2002-08-29
*** 2. row ***
dte: 2001-08-29

mysql> select dte from images where dte>'2002-09-20'\G
*** 1. row ***
dte: 2002-10-29

Is this correct? Should I have to use quotes around a date in a where

weblogic integration problem

2002-08-29 Thread alan greenberg

I am trying to create a mysql connection pool in Weblogic 6.1 using the
JConnector driver and failing. All I get is "no suitable driver" which
usually means that the URL and properties aren't right for the driver I'm
using. I defined the pool as:

name: MysqlPool
URL: jdbc:mysql//192.168.1.100:3306/Objectworks?user=root;password=jude370
driver: com.mysql.jdbc.Driver
properties: user=root;password=jude370

I put the jconnector jar file at the head of the weblogic classpath. Before
that, it complained about not finding the driver class. THe properties
seemed redundant but when I removed them, weblogic complained that there
were no properties - apparently, properties are required. The URL fits the
pattern defined in the JConnector Readme file. So, I'm just stumped.

Can anyone tell me the correct incantation to get the jconnector driver to
work in this context?

thanks,
ag

The secret is in the README file (as usual) :)

Add "useUnicode=true&characterEncoding=BLAH" where BLAH is whatever
character encoding you are using (ISO8859-1, UTF-8, etc).

user password self management -- how?

2002-08-29 Thread Tom Emerson

This is actually a bit of a general-database question, since I'm sure it has
the same or similar repercussions regardless of which RDBMS you use, but I'm
curious: is it possible to "safely" allow users to maintain their own
passwords to a database? [and if so, how?]

I'm sure I can do this "programmatically" by having my program connect to
the database using the "root" user/password, but that means embedding the
password in the program [i.e., viewable with "string..."] so once a user
deciphers that, they are free to run "mysql -u root" from anywhere the
"application" could run.

maybe I'm thinking in a deranged way, but it seems that granting "update"
access WITHOUT granting "select" access to the user table in mysql [and
perhaps even limited to the password column] would enable a user to change
their password without being able to read anyone else's (encrypted) password
value; HOWEVER that would also allow them to CHANGE anyone ELSE'S password
[even "root"] -- is it possible to limit access at the ROW level? (i.e.,
user "x" can only select/update records with "user='x'")

The reason I'm doing this is that I'm designing an application that logs on
with a "fixed" username and uses it's own "user/password" table to validate
end-users. The program notes if a password in the database is blank -- if
so, it compares the user-supplied password with a (eventually well-known)
"first-time" password and forces the user to set a new password, so
obviously the "fixed" user ID needs the ability to udpate the application's
password table, which has the same problems as the "system" level table, but
limits the "damage" that can be caused to just the application and not "all
of mysql"... (i.e., crackers could determine the "fixed" user's password by
scanning the executable, but that won't let them harm anything other than
the application itself...)

Ultimately, I'd like to use mysql's user/password (grant) facillities
directly, but since the application would be distributed to offices
nationwide [all "phoning home" to the central database via the internet], I
don't want to burden the one system manager/DBA with the responsibility of
maintaining every single clerk and technician that can use the system -- I'm
willing to let the office manager at each location enter and maintain
employees local to that office [which makes sense because that person also
does the hiring/firing...] but for obvious reasons, the "managers" cannot
manipulate values for other offices [though, I suppose, I have to trust SOME
of them... ;) ]

If I could guarantee that the "only" access to the database was via my
program, then I'm certain I could create logic to maintain passwords safely;
however this is not the case -- not only is "mysql" available as a simple
client, but anyone with a smattering of knowledge of "Access" and the myodbc
connector could create their own "manipulation" program and circumvent any
safety protocols I establish.

Trouble configuring Tomcat 4.0.4 JNDI connection to MySQL

2002-08-29 Thread stevem

I'm having trouble connecting to MySQL using JNDI with Tomcat. I have
deleted my server.xml and started with a fresh copy. First, I made sure I
could connect to MySQL with a regular JDBC connection. Next, I added a
JDBC Realm using MySQL. That works fine. Finally, I added a JDBC resource
and tried to use it. That is when I get the error below.

The error I have, and have always had, even before the 4.1 detour, is the
following:

javax.naming.NamingException: Exception creating DataSource:

Why would Tomcat be looking for a Hypersonic SQL driver? I took a shot and
copied Hypersonic 1.61 hsqldb.jar to /common/lib, but when it had no effect
I removed it.

I'm currently running
Windows 2000

Tomcat 4.04
MySQL 4.0.2-Alpha
MySQL Connector 2.0.14. (I copied mysql-connector-java-2.0.14-bin.jar to
$TOMCAT_HOME/common/lib,)

I get the same error no matter what code I run. For example, Both code
blocks below result in the same error:
 Context ctx = new InitialContext();
 ctx.addToEnvironment(Context.INITIAL_CONTEXT_FACTORY,
  "com.sun.jndi.fscontext.RefFSContextFactory");
 Connection conn = ds.getConnection();

RE: Mysql on a separate server from webserver

2002-08-29 Thread Adam Nelson

Something like this:

$site::dbName= 'DBI:mysql:test:10.10.2.20';

for a database called test on 10.10.2.20

Then add the user for the web machine (assuming it's 10.10.2.10) to the
authorized list:

Grant select on test.* to [EMAIL PROTECTED] identified by 'password';
Flush privileges;

Everything else is exactly the same (and I find it works much better and
is obviously more secure).

Java and Mysql, problem with String encoding

2002-08-29 Thread John Deligiannis

Thank you for your answer. I have to apologise for my bad post(I work 1
week on this problem and it was a desperite try).

I have done what you suggested, but it partly works.
Without "useUnicode=true" I didn't get anything right.
With "useUnicode=true" I did get the data that were already in my table
right, but not the table headers.
Also (With "useUnicode=true"), when I inserted data from my form they
did not appear correct.

I read previous posts about "new String("","ENCODING") " I , but
a. this does not solve the header problem
b. when I run my applet from a greek locale PC it shows the table headers.

Thanx and sorry for my 'lame' post,

John

For trigger you don't have alternative. You must write a simple application

How about

select a.name from table1 a, table2 b where a.name like
concat("%",b.name,"%");

You might want to read chapter 6.3 in the mysql manual:
http://www.mysql.com/doc/en/Functions.html

Hi,

Mary gives you a sugestion about how can you use field(b.name) in this case.
You can try this :
select a.name from table1 a, table2 b where a.name like
CONCAT('%',b.name,'%');

Try the attached port; it builds and runs fine on my -current system,
and it should work on 4.*. Extract it, uncomment the
WITH_LINUXTHREADS=yes line, and make.

You'll have to change your application, then :)

You can always run an hourly total script that walks through the
accounting records added in the last hour and updates the user records
in SOMEOTHERTABLE. Or even run it every minute.

How to apply the mysql++ api patch

Hi

I need to use the mysql c++ api in combination with gcc 3.0. I have downloaded the
patch but I have trouble applying it. I've tried the patch tool but that did not seem
to understand the patch file.

Is there a solution or do I need to manually change every single file mentioned in the
patch ?

Java and Mysql, problem with String encoding

2002-08-29 Thread John Deligiannis

Hello,

I have an applet that uses mysql. I have added support for greek
and for data that are already in mysql, it works fine. When I add
other from my applet it prints "".
Another thing is that I construct a table from the resultSet using
two (String) vectors. The table headers come out unreadable.
Is there any procedure that I need to add in order to work?

Thank you

Stored Procedureish Advise needed

2002-08-29 Thread John Gruber

Hello gang,

I have an application (radius) that is logging network activity to MySQL.
When a users completes a network session an accounting insert query is made
for that session showing the session length. The application has the
functionality to SUM all session times for a user and determine if it should
let them connect the next time. The SUM query will eat us up as the number
of session in the table is very large. If I had stored procedures (and
triggers would make this so nice!) I would simply add the seconds every time
I got an accounting update. This would reduce my overhead 1000 fold. I can
alter the INSERT query for the application, but the application will only
let me issue ONE query.

What are my options with MySQL 3.x. I have looked at the User Defined
Functions, but that requires me to write a n exit to C that just calls
embedded SQL to populate another table. There must be an SQL solution to
this.

I.O.W turn the following into one query for me!

INSERT INTO SOMETABLE (val1,val2,val3) VALUES ('val1','val2','val3')

and (psuedo code.. which makes now sense!)

UPDATE SOMEOTHERTABLE SET (SECONDS = SUM('val1' + SECONDS))

This is trivial to do in a stored procedure for other databases. You would
simply store the value of the current seconds in a variable, add the input
argument to it, and then update the table.

Tell me how to do this in MySQL. Have your application do it or, call a
script doesn't help me much. This has to be a database thing. Am I stuck
with UDF or native functions? The generic examples aren't much help. Does
anyone have the C/C++ code to define a UDF that can execute an input command
script (i.e. execv?) so I can write this in perl and be able to change it on
the fly?

Thanks in advance...

John Gruber

Hello,

A MySQL developer would be able to answer to these questions more
accurately, but I'll try to answer _logically_. So don't bet a million
dollars on the correctness of my answer.

I think this flushes the cache. Think about a situation where col1 is a
computed column that derives its values from the data in col3. When col3
is updated, the value of col1 in the query cache would become invalid.

> 2) or will the cache be flushed if someone changes a row that falls outside

This shouldn't explicitly flush the cache, but I don't know the details of
the implementation. This insert shouldn't have any effect on the
aforementioned SELECT query, because col1 here is 'D'.

Installing mysql 4.0.3 with linux threads on freebsd

2002-08-29 Thread Varshavchick Alexander

Hi people,

I have a FreeBSD server where I installed mysql 3.23 with linux threads
from a port collection, the procedure was simple enough
(WITH_LINUXTHREADS=yes make). All my attempts then to build it from
sources were unsuccessfull, however it was not important consdering
that it could be installed from ports. But now I wish to upgrade it to
4.0.3 (keeping the linuxthreads option), so can anybody advice on the
procedure of building it from scratch?

If I look at the options which were in effect for the port version they
are a bit complex, should I just try repeating them now and it'll solve
it, or the procedure should be some different? Here are the options for
reference:

Compilation info: CC='cc' CFLAGS='-O -pipe -D__USE_UNIX98 -D_REENTRANT
-D_THREAD_SAFE -I/usr/local/include/pthread/linuxthreads' CXX='cc'
CXXFLAGS='-O -pipe -D__USE_UNIX98 -D_REENTRANT -D_THREAD_SAFE
-I/usr/local/include/pthread/linuxthreads -felide-constructors -fno-rtti
-fno-exceptions' LDFLAGS=''

Configure command: ./configure '--with-comment=FreeBSD port:
mysql-server-3.23.49' --with-extra-charsets=complex
--enable-thread-safe-client --enable-assembler --with-named-z-libs=no
--disable-shared --with-innodb
'--with-named-thread-libs=-DHAVE_GLIBC2_STYLE_GETHOSTBYNAME_R
-D_THREAD_SAFE -I/usr/local/include/pthread/linuxthreads -L/usr/local/lib
-llthread -llgcc_r' --prefix=/usr/local/mysql-linux
i386-portbld-freebsd4.5

Thank you for any hints on the subject.

The embedded server does not work with networking enabled. You can only
access it via libmysql which talks to it directly.

See

likka,
I read it too but I have a question about the cache, this sentence
in particular.

 >>NOTE: The query cache does not return stale data. When data is modified,
any relevant entries in the query cache are flushed. <<

If I have a select statement like:

select col1, col2 from table1 where col1='A'

1) will the cache be flushed if someone changes a non-referenced column for
one of the retrieved rows:

Update table1 set col3 = 'x' where col1='A'

this update changes col3 that falls within the Where of the query but it
affects a column that is not returned by the query.

2) or will the cache be flushed if someone changes a row that falls outside
of the query's Where clause:

insert into table1 (col1, col2, col3) values('D', 'x', 'y');

This last query updates the same table as the select query, but the row
that is added is outside the range of the query's where clause.

So how smart is the cache?
a) Is it smart enough to allow table updates and if the update doesn't
affect the query, will it continue to use the cache? (This requires a lot
of intelligence.)
b) Or will any update to the rows that fall within the range of the query
(regardless of whether the column is in the query) will flush the cache?
c) Or will any update to the table automatically flush the cache?

MONTY:
I would like to see the Explain command to say if it is using the cache or
not (CACHE:Yes/No). This would help developers make better use of the cache
if they know how what affects it.

Mike

How to compile embedded MySQL on Windows

2002-08-29 Thread Tobias Eriksson

Hi
I am trying to figure out how to compile embedded MySQL on Windows.
I read that one should configure using the --with-embedded-server flag,
but I should also use some script called mysql_config. But I couldn't
find that script, I have downloaded the source for version 4.0, so I
should have all the necessary things.
Please, if someone you lead me in the right directions I would really
appriciate it.
What I am trying to accomplish is to build the libmysql to also enable
the SOCKET PORT facility in an embedded server. Thus I want to run my
application with MySQL embedded and then also allow for connections to
the database from the outside. If you've done something similar please
let me know.

request for support with mysql_store_result() and mysql_field_count() with vbscript

2002-08-29 Thread Angel Moon

general outline of situation; my office is moving away from microsoft
(resistance is NOT futile!!! go slashdot!), and establishing web-based
customer service systems.

i'm currently establishing a customer table, that links to a contact table.
each customer will be listed once; to be the customer name and mailing
address, with an auto_increment number serving as the customer number (key
field, cnum).

the contact table will contain specific contact names for each customer,
with specific details such as email address, phone number, extension, title,
etc.

i currently have these tables joined on the customer number (cnum), with a
separate contact number (auto increment, key field, conum) for the contact
table.

what i'm TRYING to figure out is this:

i do a search within the two tables to find contacts for a customer, who has
been selected from a drop-down box. this is matched on the cnum field in
both tables.

currently, if NO contacts exist for a client, the screen remains blank. i
want to generate an option to input contact information in this case. the
logic for this is roughly:

if the search for cnum within contacts yields no result (empty set) then
show "do you wish to input?" screen
else
list contact info
end if

i can't seem to get my head wrapped around the syntactual requirements for
using mysql_store_result() within vbscript.

following is a sample of what i have so far, if it helps. can someone point

Yes, you can use ON DELETE CASCADE and ON DELETE SET NULL with InnoDB

ON DELETE CASCADE and ON DELETE SET NULL are supported since 3.23.50:

Digest, please!

2002-08-29 Thread David Ziebarth

I've read the info file and the non-existant FAQ file so I've done my
homework. Yet, I can't seem to get this listserv to accept a digest
command; I keep getting bounced.

Does mysql list support receiving by digest?? If so, how?

Thanks!

Read doc for build here :

http://www.mysql.com/doc/en/Linux.html

You can try too amd athlon optimisation but i don't know if it's working
well.

NB : i can't downgrade gcc on my server so i'm only using binary
distribution of mysql.
Perhaps it's not the best solution, i don't know ...

CygWin layer into win32 MySQL 4

2002-08-29 Thread Roberto Della Pasqua

Hi!

I would like to ask you this for my curiosity:

into mysql 4.02 win32 it exist a cygwin posix emulation layer, it's used for
the client or for the server app?

Cygwin emulation layer it's very slow into win32, can you translate cygwin
calls into direct win32API's (without cygwin)?

TNX

Roberto.

Hm.. Strange ..
I tested your example on 3.23.52 and on 4.0.3 and it worked like a
charm ..

What options did you use for mysqldump?

Yes, if you don't have FILE_priv.

If you use LOAD DATA INFILE (without LOCAL), MySQL reads file from
server host and user must have FILE_priv.
Note: FILE_priv is a global privilege.

What file? pet.txt or my.cnf?

Yes.

Yes, you can create it by yourself.
Depends on what options you want to specify in my.cnf you should put
this file into /etc/my.cnf or MYSQL_DATADIR/my.cnf or into home_dir/

Read some more info here:

Connecting to another machine with myCC

2002-08-29 Thread Fred Tsang

Folks,

I have a question about myCC. I can't connect to a local linux machine (ip
192.168.0.232) for the life of me from my win2k box (ip 192.168.0.232) using
myCC. I've done the following:

GRANT ALL ON test.* TO 'fred'@'192.168.0.230';
FLUSH PRIVILEGES;

but, in my mysql.log I still get:

020816 14:11:18 6 Connect Access denied for user:
'[EMAIL PROTECTED]' (Using password: YES)

My user table looks like:
mysql> select user,host from user;
++---+
| user | host |
++---+
| root | 192.168.0.230 |
| fred | 192.168.0.230 |
|| lancelot  |
| root | lancelot |
|| localhost |
| fred | localhost |
| root | localhost |
++---+

What have I done wrong? I know that mysql is up and running and listening
to port 3306. If anyone has an idea, please let me know.

Cheers,
Fred

Several users ( like me ) have reported load problem using 3.23.51 and
3.23.52 linux binary version of mysql.
Something wrong with the glibc used by mysql AB i think ...

The only cure that works for me is not to use 3.23.51 and 3.23.52 binary
until that a new stable one will be released or building his own binary ...

Help please - MySQL 3.23 stability / binary

2002-08-29 Thread borracho 138

Hi, I'm using: Tyan m/b, 2x U160 scsi disks, dual Athlon MP CPUs, 2Gb RAM +
2GB swap
RH 7.3, 2.4.18-5smp kernel
MySQL 3.23.51 (MySQL Linux tar.gz) binary used based on the comments on the
download page about gcc 2.96 compiled versions resulting table corruptions,
etc.

I have a couple of questions:

Does anyone have any more information about gcc 2.96 on the x86 Linux
platform?
Has anyone been able to duplicate the problems themselves or understand
their exact cause?
Is the binary optimised for SMP systems?
I've searched for more information on these issues, without luck.

The system randomly spirals out of control - load avg increases very
rapidly, resulting in loads of 200-300 in 2/3 minutes. At other times the
server is fine, handling the busiest loads.
It doen't appear to be using any swap space at all (0K) - the 'mysqld'
process size gradually has grown to the point where no free RAM was
available and 'spiralled' , but that isn't the general case.
Restarting MySQL cures the problem, although system memory isn't being
reclaimed (see below)

I also have a memory related problem - the system doesn't free memory when
MySQL is stopped and started. (I suspect this may be a kernel related issue)
RH have released a kernel update 2.4.18-10, which apparently fixes a problem
with the filesystem cache - could this be related? (Again, I've been unable
to find more information on the subject)

As a result I'm tempted to try a compiled version (all tests ran fine, as
did MySQL 3.22 in the past)
Is a stability/corruption free MySQL guaranteed using gcc 2.95.3?

Thanks to everyone in advance
bill

Yep, we're using 4.0.2 on Debian. You may want to grab MySQL .tar.gz
instead of .rpm and install it somewhere into /usr/local. Then you
should get no conflicts with whatsoever, and the PHP stuff might Just
Work(TM). If not, you can try to reconcile new locations of the MySQL
socket file in php.ini or my.cnf files, etc. (As I'm compiling PHP
myself, I'm not really exactly in your situation.)

Compiling DLL on windows: undefined reference errors during linking?

I have addressed this problem in the thread "Re: developing clients in C with Dev-C++"

I am trying to compile a file on windows and build a DLL, this has worked before
using
MSVC5.0 but now I'm using cygwin/mingw environment.

Does anyone know the problem/solution?

I have also tried building with mysqlclient.lib but get different error messages.

I have checked various newsgroups and search engines for answers, can't find a
solution
yet.

Actually, the interesting error messages are a bit above the snippet you
posted. These ones alone do not give any clues...

There's also a _read_last counter. It's not yet exposed in SHOW
STATUS, but it's there. Hmm. Wonder if that's a simple bug or not.
