Mysqlcheck -r very slow on big tables

Mysql 3.23 and use index
Hello! My Mysql version is 3.23.56. I want to use specific index, but when I use "use index" EXPLAIN gives me that key not used. And when I'don use "use index" mysql uses other index. Where I test this in 4.0.14 with force index it works and the query time is 4x faster with index I choose, then the index mysql use. Is anybody can tell me how to fix this problem. Mysql - Dual Xeon or Dual Opteron
Hello! :) Our server is very heavy loaded: CPUs states are in 0.0% idle almost all day. Linux 7.3 running myslq 3.23.56 and apache 1.3.27 on 2x1GHz Intel, 1GB RAM, 40GB WD 7200 8MB cache. Mysql have around 166 threads and perforn over 400 Queries per second. We are going to uprade our server but I'am wondering between new Opteron (1.4GHz)and Xeon (2.4). We are going to choose Dual Xeon solutions but after reading article about Opteron and Xeon performance with Mysql and Linux http://www.aceshardware.com/read.jsp?id=55000261, where Opteron is 38% faster on query than Xeon, I am very confused what to do. Problem with enum and cyrillic symbol 'ÿ'
Hello! I tried to create table with field enum and if there is cyrillic symbol "ÿ" query passes but when i start describe table in others fields names apperes funny characters. mysql and swap
Hello! :) The problem is that after working 5-6 hours without swapping Mysql begin to swap. If I switch off swap with swapoff -a and then switch it on again after 5-6 horis withut swapping Mysql begin to swap again. Can anybody give me some advice? I'm using Apache with mod_perl enabled+mysql OS is Linux RedHat 7.3 kernel 2.4.18-3smp 2 CPU x 1GHz Intel 1 GB RAM SCSI Seagate HDD/with scsi controller which transfer rate is 20MB/s !!! The problem is that mysql server restarts itself. I read in mysql list that the possible reason is some bad query. I understand that I can find it in the mysqlbinlog.
