RE: Do any of your applications work?

2002-04-06 Thread Todd Williamsen

I agree with everyone that has responded. A vague answer that does
nothing but moan about something that is more or less incompentence from
your developmental team. Not only that, but you have a support
contract, so why you asking a question here? Shouldn't you be calling
your support for this answer?

Responsible Person,

We have been asked by a client, to use your products in our intergration

efforts. Your MySQL 3.23.49a [Stable version?] for Sun Solaris x86,
version, 5.8, is offered without the installation file
./scripts/mysql_install_db. The ./scripts/mysql_install_db, that comes
with it, is EMPTY!
Your MySQL-MAX 3.23.49a, although it gets a little further along
in the
installation phase [in that a deamon start-up], only some of the
commands
are execuatble/executing. This is not a normal [nor acceptable]
situation
in the UNIX world, when commands in the same directory are not all
executable [No PATH problems here]. None of the following commands seem
to work: mysql, mysqladmin, BINDER/(anything), just to name a few. The
instructions were followed to the dot [as we have previously done with
REDHat Linux 7.2, of the above mentioned].
We have also come to find, that your JDBC
[mm.mysql.jdbc-1.2c.tar.gz]
driver currently has a problem in being recognised in the FORTE
developement environment. Please know, that we are not at all new to the

communal-developement environment. However, whenevr anything is posted
to
be working, it should be exactly that. Ommission errors of the magnitude

we have found, are pure 'Microsoftish' in nature, and should have no
place anywhere, integrity not withstanding. Besides our practice of
believing, that sometimes bad things happen to good people/things,
perhaps by us bringing these faults to your attention that some good
will
come of this.
In the meatime, I await a prompt response. As for our client,
depending
upon your promptness, they may not cancel the current licensing
agreement
with you.

Writing a book on features that do not exist yet is asking for trouble.

I must say, I think this is rather short-sighted of your publisher. I
obviously do not speak for the MySQL folks but I don't think you should
write
a book on product features which do not exist yet.

That said, it is often a better idea to move business logic out of the
database and into another layer instead. At my previous job, we had to
do
this with MS SQL Server 2000 because the built-in triggers and foreign
keys
and the like were simply too slow so we did it programatically instead.
Of
course, we still used tranactions to ensure things were either all
committed
or all rolled back.

In my opinion, this is the right approach to take with MySQL.

RE: Password function still doesn't working

2002-04-02 Thread Todd Williamsen

Im going to take a shot in the dark since I have not messed with ASP in
years

Have you just tried to verify the data is there with a simpler script?
Just do the connection script then the user_check then see if it is
still there. If it was PHP I would be able to find it.

Subject: Password function still doesn't working

I thank all the people that helped me... was very usefull, I tried each
one...

But i'm using ASP with a DSN Connection
Check the code:

Set MyConnection = Server.CreateObject("ADODB.Connection")
MyConnInfo = "DSN=MyDSN;UID=MyUser;PWD=MyPass;"
MyConnection.Open MyConnInfo

SQL = "INSERT INTO user (user_name, user_pass) VALUES ('" & user_name
& "',PASSWORD('" & user_pass & "')"
MyConn.Execute(SQL)

USER_CHECK = "SELECT user_id FROM user WHERE user_pass = PASSWORD('" &
user_pass & "')"
Set MyResult = MyConn.Execute(USER_CHECK)

If MyResult.BOF And MyResult.EOF Then
  Response.Write("User not found!")
  MyResult.Close
  Set MyResult = Nothing
Else
  USER_ID = MyResult("user_id")
  Response.Write("USER ID is: " & USER_ID)
  MyResult.Close
  Set MyResult = Nothing
End If

MyConnection.Close
Set MyConnection = Nothing

The ASP code works fine, but when I verify if the user exists by using
the
PASSWORD i get the 'User not found!' response, which means that it
didn't found
any one...

Any tip...

Regards,
Ramiro

Lots of image data. Most of the time I am doing data retrieving, but

busy
database hits. Could any one please educate me if mysql is a good
database
for this purpose? Or anything else?

Many thanks.

RE: phpMyAdmin issue

2002-03-26 Thread Todd Williamsen

The problem is PHP and IIS... IIS takes a lot to get it to work... I
think you should ask sourceforge about it, not the mysql mailing list.
This is a PHP issue not a mysql.

Hi

I have got phpMyAdmin connecting to my server.
When i open up index i can see on the left hand side my datbase and
tables.
And on the right of the page is the welcome page...

Welcome to phpMyAdmin 2.2.5
MySQL 3.23.32 running on 136.201.105.3 as [EMAIL PROTECTED]
phpMyAdmin

 <<...OLE_Obj...>> Official phpMyAdmin Homepage
<<...OLE_Obj...>> Sourceforge phpMyAdmin Download Page [ChangeLog]
[CVS] [Lists]

I seem to be missing the bit where you create a database etc.

Then if I click on my database on the left hand side i get the error:

CGI Error
The specified CGI application misbehaved by not returning a complete set

any ideas ?
im sorry
but im a complete beginner here

RE: phpMyAdmin issue + looking for php/mysql websites

2002-03-26 Thread Todd Williamsen

Read the documentation. Where is the mySQL database located? Is it on
the web server or on another machine? If its on another machine then
you put in the IP address. If its on the same machine as the Web
Server, then put in localhost

Get it?

RE: phpMyAdmin issue + looking for php/mysql websites

2002-03-26 Thread Todd Williamsen

Is there a reason why you are using IIS?

I would disable IIS and run apache. That's what I did, IIS is way to
difficult and unstable to install PHP as CGI or ISAPI

Apache is easy to set up with PHP. Download Apache and run PHP from
there. Make sure you disable ALL the IIS services

Im not sure what way php is installed as it was

when i opened up MyphpMyAdmin after just installing
it. I go to create a new datbase and thats when the
error page comes up. Could it be i dont have the
config file setup correctly ? or maybe MySQL isnt
configured correctly ?

i dont know if that helps ?

IIS Services to kill:

IIS Admin
FTP Publishing Service
World Wide Wb Publishing Service

If my memory serves me right, if you stop the IIS admin service the rest
will stop as well. But remember to disable them by going into Start |
Admin Tools | Services

And right click on them chose Properties and select "Disable" in the
drop down box

Hi,
I want to set up my home computer (PIII,Win2000) for development and
testing of php/mysql work.

I know that both will install and work on a Win2000 box, my questions
are about potential conflicts:

My Win2000 came with IIS, are there any hitches to using php/mysql with
IIS? Should I install Apache, and if so, do I need to completely
uninstall IIS?

I have a development edition of Oracle 8i running on the box already.
Will this create conflicts with mysql? Does mysql run as a service that
I can turn off like Oracle?(in other words, can I turn each on/off
depending which I'm working with? Or are they happy running side by side
on the same box?)

Any advice, or links to useful docs would be appreciated.

RE: mysql/php on Win2000

2002-03-25 Thread Todd Williamsen

I have found Win2k completely stable with Apache/PHP/mySQL. Not one
issue!

If you are talking IIS combo, then yes issues will arise. I don't see
any performance hit on this setup as a CGI. I think you are being a bit
bias towards Windoze. Windows 2k is quite stable. The thing about
win2k is that it is as stable as the person who built it.

I prefer to run PHP/mysql on its native platform of linux, but it runs
great on both systems.

The only problem with Win2K is that a lot of the components for PHP
aren't
there. Also PHP will run as an ISAPI module, but its not recommended.
The
preferred method is as a CGI (read 25% performance hit). Win2K doesn't
multi-task/multi-thread as well as either of the *nix's mentioned and
its
not as efficient with memory utilization/swap as any *nix on or off the
market. Even OS/2 was better about it than Windoze is.

Also bear in mind that I've never found Windows to be anywhere near as
stable as Unix, though its gotten better.

RE: MySQL, MyODBC and MS Access

2002-03-22 Thread Todd Williamsen

Your client won't drop Access in favor of a faster, more secure database
like mySQL? Why is your client stuck on Access? The data can be dumped
and make the GUI web based to look just like the Access one... Stick in
on a Intranet server, and lock it down... I would rather have that than
a slow, unsecure, limited DB like Access...

Back to a solution...

The problem is that you would need to run a query to pull the data from
the Access db to the mySQL one, which could be automated in Access.
Just add a few extra lines in your code for each form and should work
beautifully. A problem that may or may not occur is the fact that
Access uses different kinds of datatypes in its tables. If these
datatypes are in the Access DB tables, using a myODBC connection, all
the data transferring will fail because mySQL doesn't recognize the
datatypes

Chuck -
I am looking for a way for both MS access and MySQL to share realtime
data so that if someone where to insert (through a web based admin)
or update table in a MySQL db you could open your Access db and see
the same data. I don't know if it is possible but that way there
wouldn't be an export to MySQL procedure. Does that make sense?

I don't know much about Myodbc except it allows you to export your
Access database to MySQL. My question is if MySQL gets updated does
Access get updated too?

I have a client who wants everyone in the office to have the ability
to update and view data in an Access db. My understanding of how
access works is only one person can be connected or update the db
at a time.(depending on the # of odbc connection you have) My thought
was if we got Access and MySQL talking, I could create a web based
admin that would allow many folks to query and update the MySQL db
and if MySQL and Access are talking then the data in the Access
db would get updated as well. Really just trying to create a remote
way to access and update from the Access db.

Sorry for the long story but is this something you've done or is
it not at all possible?

 Any ideas?

Thanks
 Mark

RE: mysql/php on linux

2002-03-18 Thread Todd Williamsen

PHP

http://www.php.net/manual/en/install.linux.php

mySQL

http://www.mysql.com/doc/L/i/Linux.html

I never had any problems with mysql and PHP talking to each other on
Linux, and I am very wet behind the ears with Linux. Maybe you can give
us an error messages you are receiving, and that will give all of us a
better understanding of what is going on. If it’s the OS or Glib
libraries, you will get the same error over and over again.

I don't use RedHat, so I don't know what they have in it, I use Caldera
OpenLinux 3.1 which is much better(from what I hear). I have heard that
RedHat 7.2 is a bit quirky.

Again, its all hear say.

Hi all,

This is probably a boring repeat question, so maybe someone can just
point us to an existing response or file on the web:

We are trying to set up a webserver with the following:

Linux Red Hat 7.2
MySQL – newest
PHP 4.1 – newest

We can’t seem to get them all talking to each other, so we will just
start over from scratch. Can someone provide a step-by-step??

Check the location of the configuration file (should be either c:\my.cnf

Hi Pierre,

Thanks, for your help.
That's what I exaclty do and this is for '--standalone' fine.
But the point ist, I want to start mysqld-nt as NT service -
and this is the problem - it wouldn't let me start it as service:
>C:\>net start mysql
>System error 1069
>Could not start service

The service is an important issue. Lets you run a programm under
different user rights.

Probably I'll find some other solution.

Thanks,

RE: IS THIS BETTER?

2002-03-17 Thread Todd Williamsen

Try turning the CAPs off first... Makes it easier to read...

Second...

You are using ADOB to connect to mySQL? Is that what you are doing?
Using ASP? Try using PHP, easier to learn and is much more compatible
with mySQL. ASP/mySQL can be used, but it’s a pain, plus ASP has its
limitation that is more limiting than PHP. I use to use ASP, but it
sucks and a pain in the ass to configure and just to connect the
database. Yes, Access has its limitations. You can use it, but your
load would need to be light. Mysql is a very lightweight DB and barely
uses any ram to run it. It is very, very fast (with PHP), and I prefer
it over MS SQL server and Oracle, both which I have experience in.

Does that help at all?

RE: problem in telent to mysql server

I didn't realize you were trying to telnet to a client. You cannot do
that. You need to telnet to the SERVER. Whatever the server is

You need to make sure the user you are trying to use has access rights

The MySQL client-server protocol is a binary protocol.
It makes no sense to telnet to the server.

RE: mySQL connection problem!!!

2002-03-13 Thread Todd Williamsen

I think I read somewhere about this issue. I think it had to do with
multiple mySQL servers running concurrently.

See if there is multiple servers running using the ps command. If so,
then kill one of them. Also, when adding a user, do you select a
database first before adding a user?

Hello Sherwin,

Thanks for ur prompt reply.

Yes, I have gone thru the mySQL manual chapter that
you have mentioned..

But what I think the problem is somewhere else..

when I try to execute the command 'mysql' (when I log
in as user 'babul') on command line, I get the
following error:

ERROR 2002: Can't conect to local MySQL server through
socket '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock' (111)

It seems that the mySQL server is not running on the
system... where as when I in superuser mode or login
thru mysql user, I get just the "mysql>" prompt..!!

This is my first time with mySQL.. I m actually trying
to restore a web database into my loca machine.. then
update it locally and later withh restore it to the
web server..

Peter,

I have no idea what your front end is, and this is what will do the
actual encryption, all mysql does is holds the data. So whatever your
front end programming language is, it will have to do the encryption.

Hi,
i'd like to create a password field like in the user table in the mysql
database. The data would need to be encrypted.

Can mysql do the whole job. I would need it ideally to automatically
decrypt it for me when I do a select..

any suggestions - code example would be really helpful..

I am very new to both PHP and mySQL. Any help would be greatly
appreciated.

While running this code I get following fatal error.

PHP is installed and running correctly on the server.
mySQL I THINK is running properly. I created a table and this code is
from
a tutorial I am trying to run through for discussion threads. No matter
what I make the connection as (admin or nobody) I still get the same
result, which leads me to believe that there is something wrong with the
coding. I am too new to this to debug. Line 5 of the dbconnect.php
file
is where the script stops. again any help would be greatly
appreciated.

RE: Dropdown lists

2002-03-08 Thread Todd Williamsen

Josiah..

I think you are asking the wrong mailing list for this... I am assuming
you are using PHP correct? Your explanation isn't all that clear, but I
can guess what you are trying to do. You want to have a drop down list,
but don't know what data type..

You can use VarChar or text for this. Varchar means you other
characters besides text in the fields. Like numbers !@#$%^&*( etc.

So you can do

Create table State varchar(25);

If you need more help, let me know, don't ask the mysql list unless its
mysql related!

how to set it up in mysql.
I have
Mysql> create table tablename

Do I use varchar for drop down lists?

RE: Re: [ANN] Blue World Announces Lasso vs. PHP White Paper

2002-03-07 Thread Todd Williamsen

Here is a blurb from the report of the white paper

Lasso operates identically across platforms whereas with PHP,
significant functionality is lost migrating from one platform to
another. This makes it very difficult to develop on one platform and
deploy on another when using PHP. Lasso's platform-agnostic design makes
it very easy to develop and deploy on the same or different platforms,
easing the development and testing process for Web developers.

HUH? I never experienced and problems migrating PHP from windows to
Linux

RE: [ANN] Blue World Announces Lasso vs PHP White Paper

2002-03-07 Thread Todd Williamsen

Hmm

Isn't price one of the the factors in doing a comparision? No matter
what project size it is, cost plays a major role. If I can save a
client $3000 by using PHP versus using Lasso, I would. It doesn't seem
Lasso has a $3000(or more) advantage over PHP/mySQL combo.

The thing is that people using PHP know PHP, and that means learning
Lasso isn't cost effective now. They would need to train for it and
learn the product, and buy it. Maybe if you gave use mysql list users a
NFR copy of Lasso, maybe we would consider it and try it out and give
our unbias opinion.

Another thing is some of us rely on outsourcing our web servers and our
hosting providers probably won't let us install and server products on
their machines. Is there a workaround for this?

I would curious to try out Lasso, but I am not going to drop $1200 into
something when PHP is free and is currently more than capable of
handling my tasks so far

I agree that the principal consideration shouldn't be cost. Some of
your colleagues simply stated that they won't even look at the paper
because they think everything with PHP is free.

All that was announced here was a report comparing Lasso to PHP.
Details on what is contained in the report are contained therein. And
yes, if someone is going to cast the report off due to their own
personal prejudice and make inaccurate remarks here, we feel it only
fair to be given the opportunity to correct said misinformation.

All the technical details are in the report, and all discussion of
costs aside, we'd be delighted to talk tech and get into the nitty
gritty of the feature and performance comparisons.

Cheers!

Hi,

Anybody running MySQL on Win 2000 server here?

I just installed MySQL 3.23.49-MAX (w/ InnoDB) on a 2000 Server (Dual

the command line as a standalone. However I couldn't run it as a service
even though I already did 'mysqld-max-nt --install' the first time I ran
it. Is there anything wrong with MySQL or is it more of permission issue
on
NT/2000 server.

I also attached the my.ini file if it would help. Thanks.

Ah, the keywords "with commercial add-ons." Notice the plurality, as
well. I
wonder which add-ons and how many total add-ons were considered in
making
this cost estimate. I also wonder if most of us would even need more
than
one commercial add-on at most.

If you do a true comparison in features, you'll see that a PHP-based
solution (with commercial add-ons) costs over three times the cost of
Lasso.

Then there's also the (TCO) total cost of ownership where due to
productivity gains in using Lasso, developers end up saving lots of
time (e.g. money) compared with using other tools.

Then there's also the fact that when you buy Lasso Professional 5,
you're also supporting MySQL AB as each copy purchased puts money in
their pockets. And, this is a good thing to ensure the future
vitality (and growth) of the MySQL market. It also gives you peace of
mind in knowing that you have a commercial license of MySQL, which
can help ease liability and other concerns that may otherwise be
present in certain organizations who may have concerns using just GPL
products.

Then there's the issue of quality. With Lasso Professional 5, no
stone remains unturned with respect to ensuring Web developers have
the highest quality offering both in terms of features,
documentation, support materials and more.

RE: [ANN] Blue World Announces Lasso vs PHP White Paper

2002-03-07 Thread Todd Williamsen

Can you provide a NON-BIAS so-called "TRUE comparison"? I would be
curious on what Blueworld has to say. Also, why do you think the TCO is
lower with lasso than PHP? I don't get it, there is no cost to own it,
just to develop it. And if you develop with PHP correctly, then the TCO
is low.

Here is my basic TCO comparison:

Lasso Software Pro $1199 PHP $0.00
Learning Lasso$2500 PHP $0.00
Development (hr avg) $75 PHP $75/hr.

So to me, Lasso isn't worth switching. I would already be $3700 in the
hole without even touching it!

Hi,
First of all, I'm not an expert at all, I'm just a newby who started a
week
ago,,,

But I guess that the answer is very simple: Why don't you link your
MySQL
database to Access thru MyODBC?
This way your customers could use Access as the front-end, while MySQL
is
the back-end where the data is stored.

For that you just have to download the Myodbc driver, create dsn
connection
in every PC that would be connected to the database server, create a
blank
database in Access and link the tables in the server to the new Access
database. from this point on, it is just like working in Access.

For a detailed guide, check this out:
http://www.devshed.com/Server_Side/MySQL/ODBC/page1.html

Good luck,

If he's not really that interested in the mysql integration than I
would
say that you could probably go with a different IDE. PHPed's db
integration
and built-in php debugger are about the only two things that set it
apart
from other IDE's.

I am well aware of the conflict a few months ago

the

At nearly $500 per package, it is not a decision I wish

Before you make a commitment, you can apply for a trial version of
PHPed. You have to give them real contact information, (I think I've
gotten
like 5 sales-pitch emails since I downloaded my free trial 3 months
ago.)
So you can give it a shot before you buy... and at $500 you should
probably
try it first.

As for feedback on experience with the editor:
When you try to install the editor (at least this was what it did
three
months ago) It wants to install it's own copies of Apache and MySQL.
kind
of un-handy if you've got current installs you want to use. I think it
gave
you the option to keep your own, but after I got everything installed,
the
database integration wouldn't work. So I decided that I had free time
on my
hands, I hosed my installs of apache and mysql and let it install it's
own
stuff. after that I still couldn't get it to work properly. I probably
could have tweeked something here or there and gotten everything to go,
but
my reaction was kind of like.. "I'm going to pay $300 to have to play
with
it this much to get it to work?" It just didn't seem worth it Given
that I
currently used allaire's homesite and the only things that PHPed had
over
that in features was the db integration and php debugger, and I had
already
worked out my own solutions to those problems.

I recommend downloading the trial version before you buy. I also
recommend
downloading the trial version of homesite as well. Homesite gives you
syntax highlighting, project management, web deployment. "scriptable"
deployment wich lets you decide what gets sent, where it gets put etc...
all
in a script that you can re-run. Plus homesite let's you edit the ide
to
add in features that you may need
(http://www.macromedia.com/software/homesite/) Or look into Quanta
depending on what platform you plan on developing on.

I found it ironic that if you buy PHPed standard, it only runs on
windows
platforms, and that if you decided to buy PHP advantage, "then" you get
linux support. seems like it should be the other way around given that
the
product they are trying to sell was built on the back of Open Source
technologies.

Subject: Inventory management system based on mysql

Hi all,

I am trying to put together an inventory management system for my
company
an I was thinking to do it using mysql for the database, Red Hat Linux
with
apache for the server.

I opted for a web like environment for this project because there are so

many different computers that need to access the server. I have windows
pc,
linux pc, Macintosh. If I were to do somenting in C++ or Java or Python
I
would have to make a version of the interface for every system,
sometimes
even for every version of the same OS. So I decided that I would want to

write this application using only web technologies: mysql, php,
javascript,
java; and all the users would access the server through a secure
connection
with their browser. this way the server can be accessed from any kind of

computer. And everything will be on a LAN, so the speed is no problem.

Does anyone know any reason why this would not be a good idea?

Thanks,

2002-02-17 Thread Todd Williamsen

In phpmyadmin

Choose the table from the list... Scroll down the main screen and you
will see this:

View Dump(schema) of table:

You will have options like Structure only, Structure and data, CSV for
MS Excel... Structure dumps the column names and all the field types...

Structure AND data will dump all the data and the structure

Data Only will dump just the data

After you choose which one, near the bottom of that table, you will see
:"Save as File" then click "go"

compatible between Windows and Linux?

IE. If I copy windows data files to a linux server, can mySQL on the
linux server read this data?

I don't believe this is possible, but I couldn't find any posts and
wanted to confirm. I realize that we may need to import through an SQL
query.

Thanks in advance.

Any reason why it is not recommended?
I was going to do it that way (store the location of the file only), and
have
php open it and then use something like .

But the problem is, that way everyone who knows a bit about html can use
view
source and know the locations of the image file, and can open it
directly.
It's a problem for my particular case because we want to restrict access
to
the images, and only certain people can see certain image, and so on.

The only I can think about right now to achieve that is to store the
image
directly in the table. That's why I asked.

Thanks.

Reuben,

You can store the images into a database, but no one recommends it.
What I do, is actually store the location of the file in the database
then have PHP open it.

Jim,

I am still pretty wet behind my ears and I have always had problems with
picking up the logic behind programming languages, but PHP is awesome!
I had problems with the wacky structure of Visual Basic, and I hard a
hard time just reading the code of C++ and Java.

What helped me was a book called "PHP fast and easy Web Development" by
Julie Meloni. It is so upfront with examples and she knows what her
target audience is. That is the book that got me started! Then I
moved onto a little more complicated things from there.

She has a website

www.thickbook.com

She has tutorials on the site

Then there is:

www.scriptsearch.com

www.hotscripts.com

www.phpbuilder.com

newsgroups:

news.php.net this one will list all the newsgroups, there are A LOT of
them. I use two of them, PHP.DB and PHP.windows People are nice and
really helpful!

Let me know if you need more!

It would help, if I could find a tutorial for PHP/MySQL that I could d/l

Yaniv,

Set the field of user_id to INT then make the size 10 or larger, which
will produce an ID size of up to 99. Now set it to auto
increment then set the user_id field to Primary key, this should solve
your problem, if I understand you correctly

Subject: simple question on joining tables

Hi everyone,

I am starting my first mySQL project .

I want to create 2 tables

Table User : userId , FisrtName, LastNAme, Gender with userId defined
as
the primary key that auto-increments

I want that each time I insert a new row in this table, the field
"userId" is
inserted as well in another table named Results

Table Results : userId, Category, ResponseText,

I read carefully the mySQL tutorial and tried to define userId field
when
creating Table Resultsas follows :
"userId smallint not null referenced user ". I tried to use then the
function last_insert_id to insert new rows in Table Results
but it didn't work . I always get "0" in the userId field of
TableResult.

Thank you very much in advance for your help !

I personally use PHP which it would use your familiar web browser. You
can also use PERL, and I believe ASP as well.

PHP is easy for a front end and doesn't take much to develop!

There is also a web based GUI for mySQL called phpmyadmin which is
awesome if you know nothing about administering mySQL. You can
pratically do anything from it!

Good luck!

Hi all...

First of all, I think that MySQL is really great. The only thing I need
now
is a way to do forms.

What I'm looking for is something that will allow me to do data input,
update, output either at the command line or by browser, but only if I
can
use lynx as the browser.

I wrote a database system for my stamp export company back around 1990
in
Dbase III+. That system is getting very old now. DBase III + has scripts
and
forms. Something like this is what I'm looking for.

Thanks

Subject: Duplicate Records

How does one go about removing one of two identical records in a MySQL
database? My mistake in an earlier database was not applying a unique
number to each record (1, 2, 3, ---). I know it's possible to use the
DISTINCT operator to show only one of the identical records in a result,

but that does not remove one of them from the database.

One thought that I had would be to add a unique number to each record,
and that could probably be done manually, one record at a time, but is
there a way to automate the process so that unique numbers could be
assigned with one command?

TIA

A few weeks ago I posted a question regarding bandwidth management for a
very busy mysql server that is swamping my cable modem upload bandwidth
and
impacting the rest of my network. I was seeking a way to manage
connections
by capping the data transferred and I wondered if this would impact
MySQL.
The consensus was no, and that was good :)

Even though my solution had nothing really to do with MySQL I want to
post
it here in case anyone else has a similar situation. I thought that I
needed to modify my ipchains firewall rules, when in fact what I really
needed to do was built into iproute2 "traffic shaping" commands.FYI
tc
qdisc was exactly what I needed.

Dear sir,
REQUEST FOR URGENT BUSINESS RELATIONSHIP.

confidence of
your ability and reliability to prosecute
a transaction of great magnitude involving a pending business
transaction
requiring
maximum confidence.

We are top officials of the Federal Government Contract Review Panel
who are interested
in importation of goods into our
country with funds which are presently trapped in Nigeria. In order to
commence this
business we solicit your assistance to
enable us RECIEVE the said trapped funds ABROAD.

The source of this fund is as follows : During the regime of our late
head
of state, Gen.
Sani Abacha, the government
officials set up companies and awarded themselves contracts which were
grossly over-
invoiced in various Ministries. The
NEW CIVILIAN Government set up a Contract Review Panel (C.R.P) and
we have
identified a lot of inflated contract funds
which are presently floating in the Central Bank of Nigeria (C.B.N).
However, due to our
position as civil servants and
members of this panel, we cannot acquire this money in our names. I have

therefore, been
delegated as a matter of trust by
my colleagues of the panel to look for an Overseas partner INTO whose

are writing you this letter.

We have agreed to share the money thus:
1. 70% for us (the officials)
2. 20% for the FOREIGN PARTNER (you)
3. 10% to be used in settling taxation and all local and foreign
expenses.

It is from this 70% that we wish to commence the importation business.
Please note that this

we hope THAT THE FUNDS CAN ARRIVE YOUR ACCOUNT in latest

The above information will enable us write letters of claim and job

This way we will use your
company's name to apply for payments and re-award the contract in your
company name.

We are looking forward to doing business with you and solicit your
confidentiality in this
transaction.

Please acknowledge receipt of this letter using either Tel/Fax number

If it’s a web based DB, then put the URL path in the text field of the
DB. Otherwise if you put the images into the database, the database
will become overwhelmed, plus a bunch of wasted disk space

You can put images in the DB, but the easiest way is to put the path to
the
images in a text field, and rely on the disk to send the images.

hope that helps,

Brian

Greeting all

Is there a way to put images like jpgs, tifs, gifs, bmp files into a
mysql
database? I have done this with OLE objects using MS Access... can this
be
done using the blob data type some how?

Thanks in advance

RE: Porting from MS SQL to MySQL

2002-01-18 Thread Todd Williamsen

I would say it would take a month at least to complete the job
correctly. I have seen some top OLAP developers take 3 months to
complete a 30gb DB2 to an Essbase migration including all documentation
and politics involved. Two hours? You should be fired for just
thinking that! Just kidding. The whole project scope of a migration is
HUGE!

Here would be a vague outline of this type of project:

1. Politics
2. What can mySQL do that MS SQL cannot do?
3. Technical issues
4. Documentation
5. Schemas
6. admin functions
7. training
8. post installation testing
9. pre install testing, Beta
10. load testing
11. get the picture?

This is NOT a two hour job!

I still don't agree with this. Yes you can ease the passage by
considering
all the issues up front but it is still not a trivial job for a database
of
any consequence. There is more to a database than a physical schema -
what
about all the administration procedures that sit around it, what about
tuning the new physical implementation, what about reviewing the access
paths and optimisation, what about the redevelopment of data loading
scripts. As I have said in another post, it's futile arguing about it
because we don't know enough about the technical situation let the
business/political one.

Are you seriously saying you could sit down in front a reasonably sized
DB
you had never seen before and understand all the business issues and
pick it
up and ship to a new RDBMS and platform, rewrite the document, replan
what I
have stated above, and get it back up and running in two hours? Perhaps
I
am getting too old and slow but it would take me longer :-)

I am not saying it's a huge task to do any of this but whoever said, "I
could do it in a couple of hours", doesn't understand the background
that
led to a company quoting E18k; nor do any of us, and for anything other
than
a very very trivial system, two hours seems inadequate.

This is an area that interests me, because I directly bid for work such
as
this, and when tendering you usually find the bloke down the road
working
out of his spare bedroom that thinks he can do it for a tenner over one
day.
The company requesting the work then thinks that everyone else is
overinflating their prices so goes cheap and pays for it big time
downstream. Cheapest and quickest is rarely best. On the flip side,
nor is
most expensive. Tricky world init.

Tony

RE: Porting from MS SQL to MySQL

2002-01-18 Thread Todd Williamsen

I agree.

I have more experience with MS SQL than mySQL, but there are some MS SQL
specifics that can cause hiccups. But these hiccups can be avoided with
a bullet proof project plan and excellent documentation. You may not be
able to automate all the project procedures and a lot of the database
re-construction, which is OK. Make sure you run a test system to see if
the migration is successful.

Migrations are my specialty!

Good luck, and don't be afraid to ask questions on the migration!

Yes, porting a database that was written for MSSQL with no intention of
porting can be a painful proposition. However, if you have control over
how the system is developed, you can easily design the system to be
compatible with EITHER MSSQL or MySQL (the differeces are
well-documented). If you develop your system with porting in mind (ie
the
original post of "they'll develop in SQLServer and port it to MySQL
later") porting should not take more than a couple of hours. You simply
choose appropriate datatypes and don't use MSSQL-specific extensions...

You can't login as plain old nobody.
The default mysql user is your unix user, so if you are
logged into unix as root , and entered "mysql" you were logged into
mysql as root.
You appear to have been logged in as "mysql".
If the user "mysql" has full privileges, then there was nothing to
prevent the deletion.

Dear Friend:

The first time I received this in my e-mail I deleted it! And later
wished I had it back! I had to wait months before someone E-mailed me
again with this offer! I always thought I would wait until later to try
this. I
wish I had done it sooner now! Don't do what I did! Make Sure you Go For

It! I personally thought that this would not work! But just like many of
you, I was
involved in MLM marketing, which in most cases did not work! I was
spending from $20 to $200 a month on FFA pages and other things to get
leads to market my product. Unfortunately, as I'm sure many of you have
no
doubt
noticed, most people who post to theses pages are like you and I. They
have a product to sell! They're not there to BUY! So most of us end up
spinning our wheels and getting NO WHERE! SO I thought when I came
across
this
E-Mail... HECK, What did I have to lose? It was a lot less money than
what
I had
been spending, and it was only $25.00. I thought even if it did not
work, I
have already lost a lot more money than that from other MLM and scams on
the
net, what was another $25.00? And I did see this on T.V. So I gave it a
shot.
AND BOY I AM GLAD I DID The first month only a
few hundred came in, but the following month I could not believe it the
response!
It really worked!!! So now I am going to run it one more time! And I Am
sure it will
be just as good as the first time! That is what is nice about this
program...you
can start over and over again once you're off the 5th level. If you're
A GOOD HONEST PERSON IT WILL WORK FOR YOU TOO!!
GO FOR IT! MAKE YOUR DREAMS COME TRUE!

AS SEEN ON NATIONAL TV:

A one-time investment of only $25 U.S.!!

Before you say ''BULL'', please read the following. This is the letter
you have been hearing about on the news lately. Due to the popularity
of this letter on the Internet, a national weekly news program recently
devoted
an entire show to the investigation of this program described below, to
see if it really can make people money. The show also investigated
whether
or
not the program was legal. Their findings proved once and for all that

there are ''absolutely NO Laws prohibiting the participation in the
program and
if people can -follow the simple instructions, they are bound to make
some mega bucks with only $25 out of pocket cost''!

===

This is what one participant had to say: '' Thanks to this profitable
opportunity.
I was approached many times before but each time I passed on it. I am
so glad I finally joined just to see what one could expect in return for
the
minimal effort and money required. To my astonishment, I received total
$610,470.00 in 21 weeks, with money still coming in''.

Pam Hedland, Fort Lee, New Jersey.

Here is another testimonial: ''' This program has been around for a
long time but I never believed in it. But one day when I received this
again in the mail I decided to gamble my $25 on it. I followed the
simple
instructions and whalaa . 3 weeks later the money started to come
in.
First month I only made $240.00 but the next 2 months after that I made
a total of $290,000.00. So far, in the past 8 months by re-entering the
program, I have made over $710,000.00 and I am playing it again. The
key to success in this program is to follow the simple steps and NOT
change anything.''

More testimonials later but first:

Each time that I reboot and logon to my windows 98 server, WinMySQLAdmin
starts and
then starts mysqld. I do not want this behavior (acting like a
service).

What do I need to do to prevent this, including uninstalling
WinMySQLAdmin,
which I have
not figured out how to do? When I remove my.ini from C:\Windows and
reinstall C:\my.cnf,
then the my.cnf gets renamed to my_cnf.bak and a minimal
C:\Windows\my.ini
is created when I reboot. Is there a flag for the [WinMySQLAdmin]
section
in the my.ini file that I can declare which will instruct WinMySQLAdmin
not
to auto start when the computer is rebooted?

Thanks,
Dan Jordan

Select statement with decimals as a record...

2001-12-29 Thread Todd Williamsen

I have a record that keeps track of averages, now when I say

SELECT * FROM tblname ORDERBY 'average' DESC;

It returns the one with the largest amount of intergers...

I.E.

It will say that 52.50 is a larger number than 358, why is that? Is that a
table column setting of a datatype?

UPDATE command, adding to exisiting record

2001-12-28 Thread Todd Williamsen

I am looking to update a record in a table, but take the exsisting value and
adding the new value to it...

I.e.

Exsisting record = 150, new record being inputed = 250 for a total of 400 to
be entered into the database.

I have looked at the man pages on this but all it gives is static numbers, I
need something that is being fed from a form and the new values will always
be different.

What is the easiest way to check if a table exists in the current

maybe I missed it).

RE: new user basic questions

2001-12-10 Thread Todd Williamsen

Welcome to the Club!

Connecting to a mySQL database would be the same way in VB6 as MS SQL or
Access, via ODBC. You should download myODBC from mysql.com.

On Microsoft Oses it is easier to develop apps via ODBC because its like
saving you 5-10 lines of code to write. If it's a web application and
you need to upload it to *Nix box, then you should NOT use ODBC.

As Brandon previously stated.

Microsoft sometimes say they have "standards in place" which really
means they made up their own *cough*java*cough*

The only database that is even NEAR the SQL92 standards is Microsoft's
MS SQL Server 6.5 - 2000, and this isn't even SQL92 standard! Either is
Oracle ( I think)

I doubt that Microsoft will come out with documentation on VB front ends
with mySQL backends. But I am sure there are people that do do it! I
just find it easier with an HTML front end than VB or any other
programming language!

Good Luck!

Learn SQL (which it sounds like you've done). It's almost always going
to be the standard tool between various database vendors and APIs.

> ...would like to use Visual Basic ...to edit the database.

I won't make any MickySoft vs. *NIX cracks. I'm not a VB person, but I'm
thrilled to see students working with real world tools. (In school, all
I got was an abacus.) I searched briefly on the mysql.com site and found
a few listings.

  http://www.mysql.com/doc/manual.php?search_query=VB&depth=0

In short, it still looks like ODBC is the way to go. I've had folks
connect their MS Access and Crystal Reports via ODBC to my MySQL
databases and only had limited problems. For instance, the int() in
MySQL was too big for Crystal Reports.

> -at least one way to connect to the Mysql database with VB6

To use ODBC, you set up a user/pass/host in MySQL to allow clients to
connect. Then you set up a DSN on your MS Windows machine that points at
the MySQL host, using the proper user/pass. You'll need the ODBC
drivers, I can only suggest checking your VB docs, and/or the "ODBC Data
Sources" option in the Control Panel to figure this out. As for writing
the actual connect statement, I don't have the foggiest idea. Check the
docs that came with your compiler.

> -what commands I can use in VB6...

I can't help you there. Definately the docs that came with your
compiler.

> ...a site that will point out how to use the commands

~Maybe~ microsoft.com. My experience is that their site is usually not
very helpful.

> -can I use an SQL book for reference on commands

Yes, or the MySQL docs (section 6 on the mysql.com site). Unless you run
into one of the many situations where MicroSoft is claiming that they
are using a standard when they really aren't, then most of your SQL92
knowledge should just work through any API on any SQL database. At the
very least, if VB6 offers a direct SQL interface to MySQL, then you
should be able to do anything with SQL that MySQL says it supports.

> ...only a senior in high school

"Only"? In just a few years, you and your pals will be running the
world.

> ...so I have no one to turn to except the internet and searching
> through the archives is the only help I have had so far.

Heh, join the club. Don't worry about your resources not being human
beings. Finding and maintaining a good set of documentation that works
for you is a big part of what makes you salable in the real world. Life
on the job is an open book test; you don't have to know everything, you
just have to know how to find it fast enough to make your boss happy.

> Any help with any of those questions is much appreciated.

I'm very encouraged to see a newcomer here. I hope that you get plenty
of assistance from this group. Hint, hint.

RE: Avery Labels with MySQL

I guess I would run a query to pull the data out into a CSV file, then
import it into Excel, then convert it to a Word document. Or run a

Hi,

I am creating a PHP/MySQL web based app that takes contact information

Any ideas on how to do this? I'm guessing MS Access might be able to

RE: MySQL v.s. Oracle

2001-12-01 Thread Todd Williamsen

MySQL is faster than any other database out there on small to medium
sized web sites, but when you are going into larger sites, like yours,
Oracle or MS SQL Server will be better suited for the task. Oracle does
have one major draw back Price... For your size, you will spend in
the neighborhood of $30,000+ for Oracle. You can try MySQL and see how
it does, but I am sure it will hit its limits. In a situation like
yours, you are best to be prepared, not unprepared. Oracle will do the
job and then some.

If the price of Oracle scares you, what about load balancing the mySQL
server into several web servers/database servers and making it into a
server farm? One server will get the snot knocked out of it with that
kind of load.

Just my $.02

Hi all,

We are currently using MySQL for our database driven website. Currently,
we have about 100,000 users. In January, we will be getting 2 million
new registered users on our website.

We're buying a $50,000 Sun box to run the database server on. We're
deciding whether we should switch to Oracle. Can MySQL handle this kind
of load? The president (who doesn't know much about databases) was
thinking about buying Oracle, but from what I've heard, Oracle is
actually slower than MySQL since it needs to check FOREIGN KEYs,
TRIGGERs, ASSERTIONs, etc.

Can someone provide some advice? Thanks. My main concern is whether that
massive scale (2 million registered users, along with all the data and
CPU load they generate) is supported by MySQL.

I'm stuck trying to figure out how to install this thing. What I've
tried:

* The download doesn't contain a standard MacOS .pkg so I can't do a GUI
install.

* The command-line instructions require the "groupadd" command in step
#1, but MacOS doesn't support this due to the existence of the NetInfo
system.

* Turning to the "manual.html" included in the MacOS X build, only Linux
and Windows are mentioned.

Can anyone who has successfully installed MySQL under MacOS X tell me
how they did so??

RE: Need A book for dynamic website

2001-11-14 Thread Todd Williamsen

Brian... You can SLAM yourself into a wall of confusion if you do not
pick the right books that doesn't explain things to you like a two year
old. I like books that explain things that way when I learn a new
technology. It keeps the frustration away

"PHP and MySQL Web Development" by Luke Welling and Laura Thomson (Sams
Publishing, Copyright 2001) is the best book on the market I think. But
it depends on your skill level. This book has a section on basic PHP
language, another section on setting up MySQL databases, and a third
section with practical examples of PHP/MySQL projects, including source
code etc.

This book covers 90% of everything you'd need to REALLY know. For the
other 10%, I like to use the WROX series "Professional PHP Programming"
by Castagnetto, Rawat, Schumann et. al. It has more fine details of the
PHP language which Welling and Thomson just couldn't cover. But the WROX
book only has one chapter on interfacing with MySQL. It does have a nice
library of MySQL functions in the glossary, however, which Welling and
Thomson would have been really wise to incorporate.

The two of these books make a SLAMMING dynamic duo. You just can't fail
with them.

Bryan

I bought "PHP: Fast and Easy Web Development." Its pretty through and
nice walk-throughs for a beginner. You may end up buying several
books... This book helps you get your feet wet with PHP and MySQL, but
it is no reference on everything.

Dear Noble X:

{I tried to email you but I failed, MISERABLY!! My AOL Screen
Name, Cyberbean, came with attachments, I hope this mail makes it
through the border of all that is good.
Please Help!  Thanks!}

I am lost. I am a very VERY green newbie, and I am struggling on
just how to begin. Basically, I have bought a book, entitled, "PHP and
MYSQL Web Development" . , I have downloaded mysql-3.23.43.tar.gz, the
install for windows document (yes I have not even made it passed the
Install! Oh I am PATHETIC!) says to use Setup.exe for windows. The
problem is I can not find that file anywhere.

The bigger problem is, I do not know which 'platform' to enter any
code in, and once entered, how do you run it as a web site???.

I have been using FrontPage for my website, mothermachine.com (which
is in a state of utter chaos) and found that I really do not like
FrontPage. My questionable quest began when I tried to authenticate my
message base, and I discovered, after a few wrong turns and dead ends,
this whole new world.

Basically if any of you can help me out by pointing me in a direction
for beginners, I will be ecstatic and will return the favor if I can,
maybe by, once I learn, helping out another newbie. I tell you, this
message is a New Hope, if not a last resort. I have been hunched over
my computer for quite some time.

I have Windows 98 on an older computer which I am using to experiment
with code. Can you help?. Thanks!!!

You can use phpadmin to control the database and there is an option to
view dump into a CSV file either in MS Excel format or standard CSV
file. Once you dumped it, you can then import it into Access

I have done Access to mySQL, but not the other way around... I guess
you would need to export the table to a CSV file then import it into

RE: SELECT Query in PHP

2001-10-26 Thread Todd Williamsen

Yes, I think HTML, mySQL and PHP is a marriage made in heaven but...

Online docs is like reading stereo instructions in a foreign language
most of the time. I tried the webmonkey.com tutorial and it was ok..
Funny thing is that the script they used, I couldn't get to work... Go
figure... Just my luck!

Granted I am so new to PHP I think I just eclipsed the 48 hour mark...
So am I still a rookie? Lol!!

I think the worst part about the books is that with things like PHP,
Apache and MySQL, by the time you find (i.e. from browsing at the local
library) and sit down to learn, it's talking about MySQL 3.22, Apache
1.2, and PHP3.

Nothing beats the online documentation.. amen to that. :)

You might try some sites like webmonkey.com for php tutorials. I think
that's where I went when I decided to learn php about.. oh about a year
ago.
