[newbie] key problems with the kde-terminal

1999-06-13 Thread Andre Steden

Hello,

when i use the keys [pos1] and [end] in the terminal-window of kde i only
hear a beep. If i try the
same in xterm it works fine.

The second problem is when i try to edit a bash-script with the midnight
commander a error message appears:
'Error in file /home/duplo/.cedit/Syntax on line 40' .

PS: Mandrake 6.0, German keyboard. Sorry for my bad english ;-)

Are you sure you can't use ttyS0 and ttyS1 instead? /dev/cua? devices are
obsolete and have been replaced with ttyS devices.

If they don't work, did you do anything odd to them (disable the serial
ports in BIOS or something like that)?

[newbie] Venus 6.0

1999-06-13 Thread Anonymous

I have a Cyrix P200 chipped on an ATC-1020+ 430VX motherboard PC with
48M ram. I have recently bought Venus 6.0 and it will not install at
all.
At some stage before the end of the installation it 'bombs out' with a
hex dump to the screen , partially obscured by the installation menu.
Festen installed and ran perfectly.
I tried upgrading Festen with Venus 6.0 but the same thing happened. Can
anyone help please.

I think it might work if you try cua0 or cua1 depending on if it is on

[newbie] Bus speed: Dumbdumbdumb question

1999-06-13 Thread Steve Winston

I have a new motherboard. It asks do I want to set it for "host bus
speeds" ranging from 60mhz to 100 mhz.
I am going to install a Pentium 233 MMX chip now. In two weeks, I will
replace that with an AMD 400 mhz cpu.
Now, do I set the bus speed at 60 or 66 mhz for the 233? And don't I
set it at 100 mhz for the 400mhz cpu?
I checked Intel's web site for the pentium but it offered no advice.

Hi, Niels,

What do 'rpm -q wu-ftpd' and 'rpm -q anonftp' return? This will tell
you if you have these packages installed. If you don't, the RPMs are on
the installation CD. Good luck,

[newbie] Good modem news.

1999-06-13 Thread Kuraiken

Looks like the "All PCI modems are winmodems! Does not work in Linux!" line may
soon be inaccurate. My, the times, they are a-changin'.

56K modem handles variety of OS

Actiontec Electronics Inc. has announced a 56K PCI
controller-based fax/modem
that can run on DOS, Windows, UNIX, OS/2, and
***Linux***.

The modem can also accomodate both single and
multi-processor computers.
Because the modem incorporates an on-board controller,
the physical modem
operation is independent of the host CPU. No processor
cycles are spent for
communication control, and the modem operation is
independent of the choice of
 the operating system.
The new modem supports both the V.90 and K56flex
standard, which the modem
automatically selects when it connects to an Internet
Service Provider. It operates up
to 56 kbps, incorporating both MNP5 and V.24bis data
compression with MNP2.4,
 V.42, and LAPM error correction.
The Actiontec modem comes with a five year limited
warranty and is available to
OEMs. Software upgrades and information about the
product can be found at,

I crossed off all packages on Mandrake 6.0, except Extra Documentation.
I see the anonymous ftp directories created, and when I connect, the
beroFTP daemon responds, so I think the answer is yes, although beroFTP
is not exactly wu-ftp. Its after I type the user name and password, that
I get the login failed message, on the screen, and in /var/log/messages.
I guess the problem is configuration, and that I cant figure how to do

After specifying a normal user during Mandrake 6 installation, I found
that I could not ftp into it, whereas I could get in by telnet. Is this
really the default, must one alter /etc/ftpaccess just to get in? I did
try the menu interface in KDE, tried to define a class as best I could,
but didnt work. I also managed to hang this interface, but dont have a
way to reproduce it (will let you know when I do). So, how to let myself
in? are there instructions?

We've put a fixed package on updates. And don't worry, if I manage to find

As a matter of fact the same thing happened to me yesterday night when I tried
to install kicq.rpm... I havent been able to fix it either.
I wasnt connected to the net when I tried that, though...

[newbie] permissions

1999-06-13 Thread Anonymous

Hi all,

I recently wrote to the list regarding a link on my desktop that had to
ceased to function (Netscape). If I log on as root the link works fine.

Question: Is there some setting somewhere that I need to change so the link
functions correctly for the user? I have been to the Permissions tab in the
links Properties and have tried several combinations, none successful.

Thanks again!
