Hy, I started the "Install horrors.." set of messages. In reality, all
6.0 install problems I had stemmed from my own errors. Once I took care
of those, installation went swiftly and easily, like it always has
since I first installed rh5.1 last summer on an old Compaq 486.
And 6.0 automatically configured lilo so that I can boot to either the
Linux harddrive or the win95 hard drive on my Micron pentium.

I wrote recently about a problem with the load failure of Venus 6.0 on a
PR200 Cyrix chipped PC . You answered part of the query but not why I
couldn't load it. I have since read that others with the same chips have
similar problems. Since one of the features of Venus 6.0 is to accomodate
the Pentium, Cyrix and Win??? can you tell me if anything has been done to
address this problem? I've tried about 8 times to load, upgrade and it
always 'bombs out' with error or sig 11.
I believe you said that the kernel updates do much to alleviate certain
problems but how do I update a system that I cannot load initially; I do not
have CDROM writable facilities. Please tell me. Or alternatively is there a
new disk available which includes all the upgrades?
Festen remains on my machine working well.
Kindest regards
Bob Springett

As far as using the updates, your best bet may be to just download them and
copy the other RPMs and installation files from your CD-ROM to a partition
on your harddisk that will not be used during installation. It has to be
better than waiting for an update CD-ROM to be released (and spending the
money on it).

All you need to fix that problem is a tmp directory in your home directory, so
just type 'mkdir ~/tmp' (without the quotes) and then Lynx will work.

It is hard to say. I have two 10G hard drives. One is Maxtor UDMA-2 as
slave on one computer with Intel Triton Chip(Master hard drive Maxtor
6.4G), the other is Western Digital UDMA-4 Hard drive as Master and
SamSung 4.3 GB UDMA-2 as slave with SIS 5513 IDE Chipset. In first
scenerio I was able to install Mandrake 6.0, and on sceond scenrio it
always hung-up when I tried to FDISK, but I was able to install Redhat
6.0 to it.

However, LILO use some BIOS calls and it is absolutely limited to first
1024 cylinder. So you have to make sure you create a small partition
within first 1024 cylinder and mount it as /boot. I only use one
cylinder (8MB) for this purpose. Besides, In FDISK, you have to use "a"
(no quote) to make it bootable.

Don - as long as you have a small boot partition located
towards the beginning of the disk, you would have no
problems. (something in the range of 25-50 Meg where

Here are a couple URL's to help you choose a CDR drive (I wish I had this info

http://www.fokus.gmd.de/research/cc/glone/employees/joerg.schilling/private/cdwriters-1.8.html

The first URL has a list of CDR drives known to work with cdrecord, which you
will definitely be using if you want to burn CD's in Linux. The second URL
contains a large wealth of info comparing different CDR drives.

And yes, PCI video cards work fine with Linux.

Hi. You should be able to click on the KDE menu, and select

I believe that I've read that to escape X (including KDE) you have to do a
"CTL+ALT+BACKSPACE." That should shut down x and then you can either shut

Oh, well, now THAT makes a bit more sense. :) Perhaps your monitor simply is
not meant to handle a resolution that high, at least not at whatever color
depth you chose (keep in mind a monitor/video card might be able to handle a
certain resolution at 256 colors or 16-bit, but not 24-bit, etc.)? If you have
the instructions for both, I'd suggest checking both of them to see their best
resolutions/color-depths.

Also, if you've been using Windoze, keep in mind that what Windoze lets you do
isn't necessarily an indication of what your hardware is supposed to be able to
do. In my experience Windoze doesn't do as good a job of figuring out the
limitations of your hardware.

For example, up until recently I had an old 14" monitor that wasn't meant to do
any resolution above 640x480, but Win95 let me use it at 800x600 with a 24-bit
color depth; the display wasn't completely clear, but useable. However, in
Linux, X would not let me use any resolution above 640x480 since it knew that
was the best my monitor was supposed to be able to do.

-Tom

P.S. KDE in a 640x480 resolution really, really, really sucked. ;) I love my
new 17"er.

Re: [newbie] Formatting ZIP disks...

1999-06-18 Thread Anonymous

Venus has worked superbly for me. Even Netscape works reasonably well. The only
problems I have had to deal with have had to do with my inexperience in Linux.
It seems odd, since I built my PC from the ground up using the cheapest components
I could find. Overall, I'm very impressed with the stability of Linux. Although,
I wouldn't recommend Linux to a first time user - it is far too daunting.

Now..I have read the FAQ's for ZIP drives, however whenever I format under Linux,
I only get around 88 megs of space. Is there any way to recover that extra space,
or does it have something to do with the ext2 filesystem?

[newbie] Treating Devices as Files

1999-06-18 Thread Anonymous

I've a question about the /dev directory, or more accurately, the
representation of hardware as files on Unix-style operating systems.
In the README file on the Mandrake CD under /images, one way to write the
boot disk images to a floppy is to use the "dd" command, which, to my
understanding, does little more than copy a file. Am I correct when I say
that what you're doing is copying the .img file to the file representing the
floppy?
If so, then my question is, to what extent are devices treated like files?
More specifically, can I check a CD I burned using the md5sum output
provided in the /ISO directory of my local mirror? If I change the filename
(in the md5sum file) to /dev/cdrom, can I then run md5sum with that file
[md5sum, not /dev/cdrom] as input and have it check the CD (instead of the
image)?
Thank you all, who take the time to read and answer this.

You're running fdisk during the install - fdisk will report the partitions
with
/tmp instead of the usual /dev. This is normal - I've just checked one of my
machines.

I'm betting that your root partition is not within 1024 cylinders or that
your lilo.conf has "root=/dev/hda1" instead of "root=/dev/hda2" - did you
allow the installation to make a dual-boot machine?

Quoting from SLRN Man Page:
"If no server is specified on the command line using the -h option, the server

[newbie] just for the record...

1999-06-18 Thread Anonymous

I read so much about venus not working or being buggy just for the record
I've had no problems with it at all other than a cd I burned myself becoming
corrupted rather quickly - reburning the cd cured my install woes. It is
possible that this may be affecting other people similarly but seems very
highly unlikely. In case it does help someone though...my symptoms were:
Installing from cd (after booting from floppy) starts fine then dies
periodically, seemingly randomly, at differently parts of the installation. I
don't recall the error messages, but once or twice it was supposed to be an
inability to "write" to my hard drive - fact is, it actually couldn't READ
from my cd-rom (I guess it didn't know the difference as they're both ide
media). Otherwise had numerous problems getting it to run properly
reburning the cd-rom from the huge 600 meg file I downloaded of mandrake 6.0
fixed all of the real problems - only stuff left is just linux's lack of user
friendliness regarding ports and the /dev folder (for a newbie this makes
absolutely no sense, especially when trying to mount or connect to a particular
port or filesystem and I type in exactly what various linux books tell me to
and I get error messages). However I'm quite in love with Venus. I used to
mess with slackware and kept trying out caldera (my work used to be affiliated
with them) but mandrake is the only one for me!

Re: [newbie] Terminal woes

1999-06-18 Thread Anonymous

I think it's a problem with the way Xterms display certain characters...
that's always sitting at the end of the file in vi (did you try typing stuff
in vi?), but if you cat the file, it doesn't show up. It also doesn't show
up in nxterm or kvt or konsole or any of the other terminal emulators. So
my guess is that vi puts a special character in to mark the end of the file,
which the xterm displays in that odd way. It causes no problems; it just
looks a little funny.
On my computer, at least, it happens to every user, not just root.

Re: [newbie] Ide-scsi.o

1999-06-18 Thread Anonymous

Sorry for the delay in replying, just changed PC's.

Not sure that my 'hd?=ide-scsi' statements are preventing the kernel from
loading the cd drives up as ide. It happily accepts the statements, but when
it comes to the scsi bit, it says 0 hosts (when it gets to the modules
section it changes it's mind and finds my adaptec card, but that's
different).

Consequently, later i do a 'modprode ide-scsi'. This seems to work okay, but
a 'mount /dev/sr0 /mnt/cdrom' comes back telling me that /dev/sr0 is not a
valid block device (or does it say /dev/sr0 doesn't exist - can't remember).
Presumably this is because the emulated adapter wasn't found in the first
place.

Any suggestions ?

Haven't had much time lately, but i will try and find the time to go off and
checkout the link you supplied.

Martin.

Re: [newbie] Venus 6.0 failure to load

1999-06-18 Thread Anonymous

What is your disk/cdr setup ?

IE, is your hard disk primary master and the cd primary slave ??

Again, with my old machine i used to have to put my CD onto the same bus as
the destination's hard disk (and when i bought a second disk, make sure it
was unplugged during install) in order to get Linux to install, then change
it back afterwards.

Pretty sure this was a flakey hardware combination (not faulty, just things
not working too well together!). In the end i ditched the system.

Obviously when doing this you'll need to change some of the system manually
(ie links to cd drive etc.) after successful post-install boot. If you
change the location of your root drive from primary to secondry or vice
versa, you will have have fun & games getting lilo to boot the new config. I
got there in the end, but can't remember how off the top of my head.

Maybe this'll help,
Martin.

Hy, I ended up losing all the stuff in my home directory, but that was
due to an error on my part. Every problem I encountered installing
Mandrake 6.0 was traceable to my own errors and my impatient reaction
to them. Something I had forgotten to do with /usr kept halting the
installation --something so minor that I can't remember what it is
now-- and I screwed up and let it partition /home. Oh well, I had put
most of the stuff on a zip disk, anyway. But I hate the idea of
reinstalling Staroffice.

[newbie] STILL won't boot

1999-06-18 Thread Anonymous

OK, I did yet ANOTHER fresh workstation install. (this makes
about a dozen installs) Eveything goes along fine until I
get to the part about X configuration. I set up my X
configuration EXACTLY the way I had it set up under Festen
(which, btw, ran just fine). The setup program then tells me
my X configuration is not valid (why? it worked fine before
on exactly the same hardware). It then says to make a custom
bootdisk. Ok, I do that, and then it's time to restart the
machine. That goes along fine, but then a message comes up
sayoing something like
cannot start "/sbin/mingetty-respawning too fast-disabling
for 5 minutes" That happens 6 times-one for every virtual
console.So there's no login. ARGHHH!

Wait, there's more :-( So I do a hard reboot. It goes fine
until it gets to "creating /mnt/disk" Then an error comes up
saying "/bin/mkdir: /bin/mkdir-cannot execute binary file"
whereupon the thing dies, even though the hard disk activity
light is still continuously on.

One of the few times I DID get it to boot I noticed there
were a couple of unusual entries in the install.log file.
One said "cannot load shared library "libz.so.1". I couldn't
even find that file on the CDROM! I think it said it
couldn't execute the script.

I have all my hardware set to as slow as I can make it. It's
hardly a blazing fast computer with a 90 Mhz Pentium, 24 MB
of RAM and a WD 1.2g hard drive.

Does ANYBODY have ANY ideas at all? I'm starting to get
really annoyed...:-(

Howdy, James,
thanks for your reply. Well, I solved the problem immediately after I
shrieked for help. New problem is that the connection won't go through.

Most amazing is is how 6.0 set up Lilo without my help. I have Linux on
one hard drive and Win95 on another. Linux configured lilo
automatically such that I can boot from one to the other with no
problem. I had tried this before, but windoze always insisted on seeing
a nonexistent floppy in the a drive and would then stall the boot
process.

I have the same problems. I've tried to load Mandrake at
least 10 times. I could get it to boot, but not
consistently.
PS. I have a genuine (old) Pentium cpu.

RE: [newbie] modem horrors

1999-06-18 Thread Anonymous

Steve,

I had the same problem. I tried to use the modem with minicom from console
first, and it worked fine (not under X). When I used kppp it told me the
modem was busy. I eventually fixed the problem by configuring ppp dialing
from console using the ppp HOW-TO first. Then i went to X and kppp worked
fine as well.
I still don't know what exactly the problem was, but this might work for you
as well.

I would have done:
/dev/hda1 Win95

/dev/hda3 Extended
/dev/hda5 Linux native
/dev/hda6 Linux native
/dev/hda7 Linux native
/dev/hda8 Linux swap

Steve, good to see you've finally got Venus installed. It would be a good thing
if you have some notes about what you did previously and what you did different
this time. And send it off to the Mandrake guys. (well, here might be good too
since others might learn from your experience..."pass on what you have
learned.")

As for the /home partition. It's a good thing to do if you want to keep your
"own stuff" separate. This way if you later upgrade or even switch distros, you
can simply mount that partition as home and you'd have your stuff there.
Usually, the stuff that's important to you (and other users of your machine) are
stored in /home. And that's the most important really. But why are you
installing apps in /home? These should go somewhere in /opt or /usr, I think...

Just some random comments...:-)

Are you using an internal modem or external? If it's external, you might try
turning off and on again. But a better way might be to see if anything is using
the serial port/irq. Sometimes when it reports modem busy, it's not the modem
that's busy...(don't ask :-))

As for not messing with LILO...hmm...I'm quite sure you must have - you might
just not know it (eg. at install time?) :-)

[newbie] Partitioning problems

1999-06-18 Thread Anonymous

Hallo,

I have enjoyed some months Mandrake 5.3 on a 3.2Gb disk partitioned as follows:
2,1Gb windows part. 'C'
400Mb windows part. 'D'
700Mb Linux partitions

Now I got Mandrake 6.0 and I tried to partion my hard disk this way:
2.1Gb windows part. 'C'
1.1Gb Linux partitions

With DiskDruid I cancelled partition 'D' and created Linux partitions instead,
but I got the error message that /root must be on a linux native partition!
Well /root IS on a linux native partition, but it doesn't help.

'fdisk' lists my partitions as:
/tmp/hda1 Win95 FAT32
/tmp/hda2 Extended
/tmp/hda5 Linux (native)
/tmp/hda6 Linux (native)
/tmp/hda7 Linux (native)
/tmp/hda8 Linux swap

I think they should be:

/dev/hda1 etc.
 ^^^
Can anyone help me to solve the problem?

Thank you very much!

[newbie] XF86Setup, weird quirks??? L-M 5.3

1999-06-18 Thread Anonymous

I have a few questions about Xfree86 with my hardware, first the only res
setting that I can get to work for my graphics card (hercules terminator
3d/dx) is 1024 by 768 and it works flawlessly, but, I have a 14 in monitor
and as we all know that resolution is fine on a 19 in. monitor but not a
small one. I want to run it in 800 by 600 but it refuses to let me do it.
also I get all the settings set up perfectly (except the graphics card res.)
and when I go back into the setup to modify the resolution (making sure that
I use existing settings) the mouse go's Crazy!!! after I save and reboot. I
check to make sure that none of the settings have changed before I save it,
but it still changes the mouse brand, it changes it from IMPS2 to PS2
intellimouse, now I have a ps2 intellimouse but that setting does not work
but IMps2 does?? why does it do that, why does it change AND why does it not
work with intellimouse in the first place???
also I ordered L-M 6.0 and was wondering if it has intellimouse wheel
support?

sorry about my erratic sentence structure, I just got up and am writing this
before I go to work.

Re: [newbie] Venus 6.0 failure to load

1999-06-18 Thread Anonymous

Hi,

Don't know exactly if this will solve your problem or not (i now run a
PIII), but i used to run a Cyrix166. When i installed it, there was
conflictng settings with regard to bus speed and multipliers etc.

Can't remember exactly which way round it was, but there was one lot of
settings printed on the chip itself and one lot in the 'recommend settings'
section of my motherboard manual. One set of settings gave me a higher
bogomips figure on bootup (about 200 if i remember rightly).

When i ran like this i got no end of sig11 problems if ever i tried to
compile anything. Advise told me that it was because the chip was
overclocked too much (a difficult one to beleive as i hadn't intentionally
done any overclocking).

I changed the settings to the other set (again, can't remember which way
round this was - although it probably involved decreasing the bus speed and
increasing the multiplier), and although i lost a tiny (read unnoticable)
decrease in speed to approx 180 bogomips, all my problems went away for
ever.

Look into things along this line - especially if your have either sound or
video on the motherboard as this will work the bus even harder.

Good luck - Martin.
