Sounds like a custom kernel if not you'll need to send more info,
char-major-14 is sound nls_iso8859-1 is a character set/codepage
"a-m-thing", sounds like you forgot todo a make modules_install

Hi,
I get the following messages on bootup in the /var/log/messages
ile: "modprobe: can't locate module char-major-14" and "can't locate module
nls_iso8859-1". Can anyone give an idea of what is missing. I'm running
Mandrake 6.0.

Thanks to all,

Yikers, you should have spent the last two days with me! My computer
hates Windows. Anything I do with Linux
goes off like clockwork save a new soundcard I just installed. but with
Windows? It crashes. It goes beyond crashing. I just installed a new
motherboard. Venus sucks it right up, and we be doing fine. The windows
hard drive? Blam! It has crashed so badly that I can't even REINSTALL
the goddammed thing. I can't even reformat the windows hard drive. It's
like, poof, years of work and records gone. And for this, Gates is
rich?
I would puke turtle flippers across the Grand Canyon..
I ain't no tech person, but I will take LInux of any stripe any day..

Re: [newbie] 3COM Fast Etherlink

heh. Just find some sucker with a Win9x system and get 'em to make you a
boot floppy. Then, after it boots, run the PNPDSABL.BAT on the other floppy.
;-) That oughta fix THAT problem (Once in awhile a DOS/Win boot floppy comes
in handy, even with a Linux system )

[newbie] I'm back..... and with a few problems......

1999-07-03 Thread Guillermo Belli

Hello everyone:

I was a litle busy and didn't have time to read the messages on th list (or
post some). But now I'm back at the Linux stuff. I've installed Venus and there
then problems startted... I was a bit dissapointed about Mandrake
6, in my opinion it's got a lot of bugs: unmount problems at shutdown, boot
errors, TT fonts didn't work, and i got two system lockups (i was impressed!!!
first time my pc lcoks running linux).
I reinstalled Venus several times, and problems persisted. And that update
tool caused KDE to stop responding! And also some opther KDE programs did
the sameIf I wanted my computer to stop responding i'll stay with M$
products :). After I manually downloaded and updated my system with fresh rpms
from Mandrake some flaws dissapeared. No more boot or unmount problems. Kde
also worked properly.
I also got my TT fonts to work. If I configure my X server with XF86Setup I can
say goodbye to TT fonts and color to the Netscape and WP8 toolbars. This
doesn't happen when using Xconfigurator. Can anyone tell me why?
When using Kppp i got no problems connecting to the internet.. but after i
do that I can't start any other program! damn! So I used Linuxconf to start
the ppp conection. And guess what. I click on terminate connection but
nothing happens, and I have tu pull of the line cable from the modem to get
disconnected (aggrr!!) Even after kdenetwork package update Kppp restricts me
from opening any other program. Any ideas?
The claimed HD optimizations doesn't seem to work. At least I dont see 'em. So
I run hdparm -c1 /dev/hda to get better performance. Hmm, how can I run this
command automatically every time linux starts? I also run hdparm -k1 /dev/hda
but after reboot the IO transfer is set back to 16 bits. Why? (Also tried
hdparm -K1 /dev/hda)
That's it for now... I hope someone help me solve these peroblems, after
all I love Linux, and Mandrake too, and would like to have it runnign properly.
Festen was stable and trouble free. Venus is a little buggy, sort of windoze98
style (but, of course, the M$ "OS" is a real piece of crap). I would like a
rock solid distribution for the next Mandrake release, as Festen was. Anyway,
Venus with all it bugs is better than RH6.

I wonder if there is a config file in /etc or better yet, maybe a

Check this HOW-TO out. I don't remember where I found it, but I put a

Reinstall's probably the best bet, but try restoreing your registry and
then booting safemode, scanreg reg something don't remeber the exe off
hand but u run it from a command prompt and can restore/backup upto 5
registrys with the default setup (theres a config to set it whatever u
want but i don't remeber that either). This is pretty common when
changeing the mainboard, before hand (like it helps now, but) you can
save the hardware config do so, now delete all the things in the section
w/ the bus's isa/pci, once those are removed delete any other hardware
that isn't staying also. When it boot's up it'll will complain that it
can't determine the current configuration, select the striped down version
and it should autodetect the new board.

Re: [newbie] SoundBlaster 16 horrors!! HElp

1999-07-03 Thread Alan Shoemaker

Stevegee, I dunno, I use the package (kpackage) icon on the desktop. You
click on the package icon and then when the window pops up you specify
(select) an installed RPM and tell it to uninstall it, and then close the
window. Then you click on the new rpm (wherever it is) and when the
kpackage window comes up you tell it to install. It works really slick.

I got my sound card to work before the new mdk versions of sndconfig and sox
were available. What I did was uninstall sndconfig, sox and rhsound. Then I
installed the RedHat 6.0 RPM's of those 3 files. That stopped the error
message and allowed the install to finish properly. But so do the 2 new mdk
files, at least for me. Hope this helps.

Alan

[newbie] Kppp

1999-07-03 Thread Matt Milano

I'm extremely new to Linux, so this may seem like a dumb question, but
when I open kppp dialer, it says /usr/resolv.config does not exist and
needs to be created.

What does that mean, and how do I do it?

Thanks in advance

Try this url:

http://developer.soundblaster.com/linux/

They have drivers for the Sound Blaster Live (though I hear they do not work
with the 2.2.9 kernel.

They also have a couple of X-servers for there 3D blaster video cards there as

1999-07-03 Thread Steve Winston

Reinstall is what I am looking at after hours poring over Win95 texts.
Since Friday, I have installed a new mommaboard, cpu and RAM and sound
card. Save for the soundcard, Linux has been no trouble. Win95 has been
nothing but a pain in the butt (each OS is on its own hd on one
computer).
Alan, I still can't get the snd card to work.
I uninstalled the old sox and sndconfig rpms. But some junk was left in
various files. Do I need to go through the system and delete
everything?
Once I downloaded the new rpms, I typed:
rpm -ivh
Is that sufficient. I know that it opened the rpm, but when I used -ql,
it said the files weren't installed. Is there another step?
thanks, Steve W

[newbie] sorting out kppp problems

1999-07-03 Thread Alan Schussman

Hi everybody-

My problem still stems from trying to use ppp as user, rather than root. I
can get kppp to do something, but not to successfully negotiate a ppp
connection, when I run it as a user. Since I can get kppp to at least
dial, I've tried to work backwards from that point, to either debug kppp
and get it to actually achieve a ppp connection, or to copy kppp's process
and apply it to a script that I can run as user. More details are below:

Can anyone help me make sense of this one? kppp dials the modem and
-almost- works when I run as user. However, I always get an error
after connecting to my ISP, "LCP: timout on config-request", and kppp
tells me the remote server may not be configured properly. Running a
script from the consoler as root, I can connect just fine. Under kppp,
when I run a ps and look at the pppd process, I get this:

100 S root 1196 1185 1 66 0 - 382 do_sel 13:29 ttyS1 00:00:00 \
pppd -detach crtscts defaultroute -chap user alan debug

1) what is -chap doing there? I have pap set in kppp's config; is
that possibly the reason for the LCP timeout on cfgreq error?
2) what does kppp do to actually run pppd as root? Whatever I do,
I cannot make my term script do anything unless I run it as root. If I can
mimic whatever kppp is doing to access pppd and the modem, maybe I can
skip it altogether and just keep using my script, but as user rather than
root. -- I know the easy answer to that is suid on pppd, but that does
nothing for me. In some instances, I get an error that access is
prohibited to /dev/ttyS1; in others, I get errors that I can't use "name"
with pppd except as root -- are there ways around this?

I've been working on this since almost day one of using linux, and keep
hoping that by providing more information here I'll get some good ideas.
If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know. Thanks much-

-alan

Creative Labs has a page of Linux drivers that I ran across by accident
while using a computer at work. I didn't note the URL, and now I can't
find it even with Google. Does anyone know where it is?

1999-07-03 Thread Alan Shoemaker

Hiwhat worked for my PCI128 card (which returned the same error message
as the one below did) was this:

1) uninstall the current sox & sndconfig rpm's.
2) install the new sox rpm from the updates
3) install the new sndconfig rpm from the below link.

ftp://jumpstart.netpirate.org/pub/mdk-test/sndconfig-0.33-3mdk.i586.rpm

4) run sndconfig and install your card.

I sure hope this helps.

RE: [newbie] SBLive under Mandrake 6.0(Kernel Part)

1999-07-03 Thread James J. Capone

It is possible to have different boot options for the same version Kernel

When you compile the Kernel you would get a file like zimage-2.2.5 etc...
or bzimage which ever you use

Now when you cp the file to /boot you can name it like 1 or 2 etc.. something
like this

cp zimage-2.2.5 /boot/vmlinuz-2.2.5-1 etc... on down the line

Now when you configure Lilo just have the different options point to the
different versions.

Like Name= Linux1
   Image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.2.5-1

   Name= Linux2
   Image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.2.5-2

You would fill in everything as you would guess this is a example.

This should allow you multible versions of one Kernel...

Hope this helps

Thanks,

James J. Capone

I'm afraid the only thing you can do is writing to Creative Labs, telling
them to GPL the driver or at least give the source to all distributors so
we can compile versions that work with our kernels.

We can't wait for every closed-source developer to update stuff when we
need to update a kernel - 2.2.5 has some serious bugs.

Might be easier to use Midnight Commander?

Just type:
root@localhost #> mc

and then just click enter on appropriate .gz or .tar file.

Re: [newbie] 2 PC network problems

Okanother question. Do you have a terminator on both ends? Basically,
you need two "T" connectors, one on each end and a terminator on the outside
end. Also, make sure the T connectors and the terminators are rated at 50
ohms (TV cable runs at 75 ohms, so make sure you get the right hardware.)

did you do it like this

root@localhost #> gunzip -vf prog.tar.gz

If it has the .gz at the end try to unzip it first. Not sure if the -vf etc...

Sound Blaster 16 PCI is *NOT* the same as Sound Blaster 16.

However, since the Sound Blaster 16 PCI is using the ES1373 chipset, it should
work with the same drivers as Ensoniq AudioPCI, Sound Blaster PCI 64 and
Sound Blaster 128.

Unfortunately, I do not have any idea where to obtain these drivers.

Re: [newbie] Boot problems

1999-07-03 Thread Alan Shoemaker

Somehow the following three messages ended up going
directly to Axalon instead of to the newbie list, sorry.

Alan

1)---

Axalonthanks for trying.  I tried copying
the initrd.img from the floppyto /boot and rewriting the 'initrd=' entry in
lilo.conf toinitrd=/boot/initrd.img, but this didn't help.  I checked
and the'alias_scsihostadapter aic7xxx' line was in the /etc/conf.modules
file, sothat isn't the problem.  So, I'm gonna' back up some
directories andre-install tomorrow. )-:   Thanks again for the
assistance.Alan
2)
Axalonyep, sure did run lilo, since one must
run lilo every time achange is made to lilo.conf.I know the sequence
of events leading up to the problem.  I upgraded Win98with Win98
SE.  during the install Win98 SE wrote over the MBR of sda withthe
microsoft boot loader.  I ran lilo to overwrite the microsoft
bootloader with lilo and got an error message that there was no
/etc/lilo.conf(you later pointed out that /boot/initrd.img was also
missing). So I attempted to write a lilo.conf to replace the missing
one.  Iaccidentally put sda1 in the boot= line and wrote a copy of lilo
on thefirst sector of Windows98's primary partition overwriting Windows98's
bootprogram.  To get Windows to boot again, I ended up
completelyrepartitioning, formatting and reinstalling Windows.  I also
installed BootMagic to avoid repeating the mistake I'd just made.
Anyway, the only waythe existing Linux installation would boot was with it's
own boot disc, nomatter what I tried (with your help).  So I
repartitioned, formatted andinstalled mdk 6.0 and now all is well
again. The only isapnp.conf on my system (after I installed the new sox
and the newsndconfig and then installed my PCI128) is in the
/usr/doc/isapnptools-1.18directory.  I don't believe it says anything
about my system as the filedate is 2/14/99 (or 14/2/99) and I've done
everything on this system in Juneand July.  Should I have one
elsewhere?Alan

[newbie] Linuxconf behaviour

1999-07-03 Thread Roberto Rosselli Del Turco

Every time I start Linuxconf, even I don't change a thing it sets the following:

Changing owner of file /var/spool/mqueue to root.mail
Changing permissions of file /usr/sbin/pppd from 104755 to 100755
Executing: /etc/rc.d/rc5.d/S85.gpm start

Sorry if someone answered already, but I really don't like this (mainly because
I don't fully understand it :) and it didn't happen with the RedHat distro. Any
suggestions? I've already updated all the updatable ...
