Re: [newbie] Network Hub Question

1999-07-12 Thread Civileme

Actually, you can probably get by with 10BT unless you plan to build a
mini-Beowulf. The hubs are all pretty good, and it would be nice if you
had 8 lines plus an uplink or a BNC connector. If you want to spend money
liberally, find the best CAT 5 cables you can buy and get a new hub if ever
you go to 100.

More important is finding some good scripts to use ipchains and laying out
a plan for nfs and other services. If you would like them all to be on the
internet at once through a single connection, the gateway stuff can be
tricky. Some good examples are available by searching appindex at
freshmeat.net, though I have been analyzing why PaNTs won't work with Venus
for a while. An old system based on ipfwadm might be available from
infomagic... Their excellent but discontinued workgroup server software.

[newbie] Fetchmail, modems and cgi (but not together)

1999-07-12 Thread holiday

Hi,

I'm trying to work out how to set up fetchmail, sendmail and
procmail on my Mandrake 6.0 installation. Whenever I type
"fetchmailconf" in a terminal window I am told that that is not a
valid command, but I can't find an installation option in RPM either.

Also, has anyone had any experience with the 33.6 modem
supplied with toshiba satellite pro 480 laptops? I haven't got as far
as setting up my PPP settings but would be interested in any
advice.

Finally, does the standard apache setup allow cgi scripts to be run
from any directory given the correct file permissions?

thanks. James.

Re: [newbie] DHCP and RoadRunner

1999-07-12 Thread Axalon

Ok, Let me try and shed some light on this. First there are known problems
with Win NT dhcp, i've never bothered to ask much about the head end on
road runner, so can't rule this out. You will need to locate the linux
rrlogin, hopefully someone has already customised it for your area (I
haven't fiddled with it for a few months maybe it's not a compiletime
option only anymore) They tend to get upset and cut you off when you
refuse to run the rr program (even on windows). You should beable to
obtain a dhcp lease in windows use winipcfg to findout ip gw dns and all
that fun stuff, now reset the machine so it doesn't release its lease
(windows does release this if you do shutdown doesn't it?) now setup your
linux cfg with the ip info you retrieved and it should function (winipcfg
should be able to tell you when the lease expires..)

I think, that if you right click on the time in the lower right corner of

uncheck it. If you can't access it that way, browse through the menus from

Thanks for the replies so far. I'd usually wait at least 24 hours before

taking the same direction: static IP. My problem is that our ISP uses
DHCP- and gets very angry if you try to "permenantly borrow" an IP
address.

I wish I'd had the foresight to write down the exact error message from
the eth0 module. I doubt it would help much, though- it just says that it
failed to get the IP address for the card. Ah, well.

Once again, thanks to Lloyd and Art; I appreciate your taking the time to

[newbie] Network Hub Question

1999-07-12 Thread Petey

I just came across a few extra computers (2 Macs and 3-486's and I'm
putting linux on every one). My question is what properties in a hub
should I be looking for so that I can network them all. I know I want
10/100BT autosensing, but what else should I be looking for? Thanks for
any help.

I have a cable modem which is basically the Rogers wave
type, I think. At least my instructions say wave in big
letters. Anyway, I set it up as a static IP and DNS. I've
had no problems with getting mail with either Kmail or
Netscape. However , I'm now leaning towards Kmail because
it seems much faster on this woefully underpowered Linux

First, try

file:/usr/src/linux-2.2.9/Documentation/sound/

as a URI for kfm. Then a single click on the text files ESS and ESS1868
should answer most of your questions. Also, it might work if you start
up in single user mode and use sndconfig from the console.

Re: [newbie] Clock wont show correct time

1999-07-12 Thread Civileme

Well, the easy way to change the clock is in the BIOS. When your
computer boots up, it usually displays a message "Hit DEL to run SETUP",
unless it is a COMPAQ in which case you need an auxiliary disk

Set the time there, then save and exit

You might also want to check that you specified local time and not
GMT when you installed Linux.

You can also raise a terminal and run the date command

$date --h | less

Will explain how to use it.

  linux4win does something with the config.sys file,or the msdos.sys, I
can't remember exactly which one it is,but if you start looking at
thoem, you'll find it. It also leaves another file in the root directory
that is a renamed copy of the one that it replaces/creates. find out
which one, with notepad, and rename the linux file to the apropriate
one, copy the other one to a temp dir if you aren't 100% sure it's the
right one.

[newbie] odds & ends

I have a few odds and end questions,

when specifying the irq for an scsi card, how should the info be
entered?
 I've tried irq,#,address,address,# and irq etc,and such,but it will
always hang while seeking the card. (adaptec aha 152x included with a
burner) it is pretty much ONLY used for burning,as I have another (ide)
cdrom installed, but I am wanting to install another hard drive, and plan
on swapping the ide cdrom with a scuzzy cd (actualy I just realy hate
haveing something not working right!)

 same with a network card.

also,I have an LS120,presently hooked up as 'B:',how do I get linux to
recognize it?
I've tried mounting it as a floppy, and as hard drive c (hdc1) with dos
file system,and as vfat,with no luck,so what's the trick?

Haven't realy had a lot of time to play on this system since installing
mandrake 6,but I brought my 'portable' system with me on my vacation
(girlfriend wasn't all that thrilled)
and have it working fine there (except the network card)

thanks.

Go to http://lcewww.et.tudelft.nl/~haver/linux/epson.html and set up your

A side note: I've noticed that this printer has a built in 'sleep' feature,
and if I reboot from NT to Mandrake I sometimes have to turn the printer off
and then back on to wake it up or else it won't print. Ever noticed that?

if (knowing_syntax == knowing_language)
{
  well("I'll be a monkey's uncle");
}

So... what language was that? Do I know C, C++, Java, and JavaScript? Yup.
Does the above prove it? Nope. Knowing other things like:
  C - printf("This prints a line.\n");
  C++ - cout << "This prints a line.\n";
  Java - System.out.println("This prints a line.");
  JavaScript - document.writeln("This prints a line.");
gives the claim some credence though. Syntax is at most 10% of the story.
(The Smalltalk syntax, as the most extreme example I know of, can be
written in about 1/2 a page, but learning to really use the system takes
quite a while.) Frankly, once you learn about two Pascal-like languages
you can pick of the syntax of any others pretty quickly. Learning the
libraries and such that really make up the language, however, and learning
efficiency tricks and such takes much more time. Even Java has some
seriously tricky aspects (threading and garbage collection among
them) although you don't need to know them %66-%75 of the time.

Think of it like this, it's the difference between knowing C syntax (which
I do) and knowing how to write a KDE application, complete with GUI
(which I don't).

(BTW, what does this have to do with Linux and/or Mandrake?)

[newbie] System Sounds & CD Player

1999-07-12 Thread David Peerless

Hello,

I am able to get system sounds to work for the initial user
created during the install procedureSo I know my sound
card works and that the sound configuration was successful.
But when creating subsequent users, the system sounds do
not work. When I enter the command 'kaudioserver' at the
command line, I get 'maudio:can't access audio device.'
I'm guessing it has to do with permissions, but I don't know
which and for what.

Also, I can mount cd's ok under kde however when I try to play
audio cd's I get an error stating that I have to specify the filesystem.
When looking in /etc/fstab the filesystem setting is set to 'auto.' is
there something I have to specify in addition to that?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Java and Javascript are both so similar in syntax and structure to C++
that it is quite easy to come up to speed in either one if you know the

I dual boot with Win98 and Linux. I have installed Caldera 1.3, Redhat 5.1
and 6, and Mandrake 6 without any trouble getting my cable modem to work
with Linux. I just filled in the data I got in the cable printout given me
when I started off. I think I just took the first choice in one of the
menues, something like static IP? static DNS rather than the third option
which was DHCP (which Rogers wave uses, I think).

I don't know the technical side, just that it has worked for me. My onbly

Just a "heads-up" here... I just went to their website
(which may have different prices than in the local stores)
and the model they are offering on the website for $98 is
NOT the 697c, it's the HP 420c which is MUCH slower on
printing (3ppm in b&w, 4-7 minutes per page in color, vs
5ppm in b&w, & 1.7ppm in color for the HP 697c.) The
listing on the Wal-Mart site (www.wal-mart.com) is $148 US
for the HP 697c, still a darn good buy, I think!

Re: [newbie] Java Exploit Part II parent.open

1999-07-12 Thread Don Kelley

yep, warez and porn sites have often been pioneers in javascript coding.
However, the use of Java is rare in such sites - am I getting my point
across? :-) Please dont' refer to Javascript as "java", it's just not the
same thing. Very confusing for people when you say that something needs
java enabled in your browser, because Netscape INVENTED Javascript and it's
built into their browser, and you can turn it off and on in the prefs. Sun
systems INVENTED Java, and there is a java runtime engine built into
netscape but it's tragically slow, and I don't recall if it's able to be
turned off in prefs or not. But turning off Javascript will likely leave
Java turned on, and vice versa.

kfm doesn't run java. It may run Javascript, but I doubt it. These are
different languages everyone. They sound similar but if you can program in
one it's unlikely you can program in the other without further study.

Re: [newbie] Exploit in Java for Netscape

1999-07-12 Thread Don Kelley

uh, hi. Have you been programming "Java" for long? Because the language
you're showing here is Javascript, not Java. It's a completely different
language, and there is no way to have inline Java with html statements as
Java is (more or less) a compiled language while Javascript is interpreted
(and can be parsed by browsers on the fly along with HTML statements). Or
am I wrong about this?

and anyway, what's your point? Every programmer can write bad code that
loops badly - and the code in your example here can be done much more easily
within a loop. That is, if you actually want to create a useless web page
that crashes people's browsers that have JAVASCRIPT enabled, not java

[newbie] DHCP and RoadRunner

1999-07-12 Thread Matt Stegman

Our community recently got cable modem access, via RoadRunner services. My
family signed up right away, and we now have cable modem access to the
Internet (everybody applaud)! However, I now have a problem.

My system is dual-boot, and I've set the Windows side up no problem. All I
had to do was tell it to use DHCP ("Obtain an IP address automatically"),
and set the IRQ and IO port settings for my ISA NE2000 network card, and all
was well. Linux, on the other hand...

Up 'till now, I've used Linux on a network with no problem. This was with a
static IP, user-specified gateway, DNS, etc.; now that I think of it, I was
using Festen, though. When I installed Venus, I was (temporarily) off the
network. Now I'm back, and with problems. My IRQ and IO settings are good
(in linuxconf), and I tell it to use DHCP, and leave all the other info
blank (no DNS, gateway, etc). Then, after loading the DHCP module (I think,
is this what's happening?) , Linux comes back after timing out and says it
couldn't get an address from the DHCP server.

Given that Windows doesn't need to use the RoadRunner setup, Linux shouldn't
have to, either (right?). Is there something I'm missing, i.e. that Windows
takes care of behind the scenes, but Linux doesn't? I'd rather not have to
rely on Windows for internet access...

Thanks,

[newbie] UDMA timeout

1999-07-12 Thread Marco Fioretti

Hello,

I installed Mandrake 6.0 some weeks ago. Everything
(excepted sound...) works fine, but yesterday I noticed that
I am running with DMA disabled (dmesg excerpt reported below).

I checked the BIOS setup, and it says something like
"AUTO detection of HDD features enabled".

The MB is a FIC with VIA chipset, unfortunately I forgot to write
it down..

Note: this machine has only MANDRAKE installed: WIN98 was
installed by the vendor just to check that all HW was ok,
but the whole HDD was reformatted during Mandrake installation.

Any idea about why this is happening, and how to fix it?
(different configurations, LILO parameters, etc...)

Thank you in advance,
Marco Fioretti

Humour note: at power up, the on board antivirus tells me in
great despair that there is some "unknown virus on MBR!!"
Eventually, of course, LILO and LINUX takes over..

I had a similar problem - fix was a little simpler.
As far as I remember (it was 1 am a week ago);

become superuser, and look in the directory where the file was expected.
The file existed, but doing an ls -l suggested it wasn't readable. I think I chmod 'd
it
to be generally readable and the installation continued...

worth checking for similar if you get the problem again.

[newbie] Weird hdd bug in Venus

1999-07-12 Thread Kuraiken

Hello folks,

I've recently encountered a very strange bug in Venus. I was trying to install
as /home (total of hdb) during install...and it installed fine. (or so it
seemed). But at bootup, it dies with a veritable waterfall of repeated weird
errors. Reboot. Still the same.

Then I thought, rats...my hdd is gone?

Tried to use "server-default" install. It installs on hda as expected. hdb is
left alone. Then, I try to fdisk hdb and that cascading weird error message
thingie strikes again. After that, I can't even get a "du" or "df" without the
same error messages. (only ctrl-c ends it and gives me the command line)

Rebooting enables me to log on...but as soon as I try to do anything with hdb,
it goes nuts again.

So, I try a different tact. Removed all drives, installed the offending (Seagate
ST32532A) drive as hda and cdrom drv as hdb. It boots the CD and upon trying to
install, it gave me something about partition invalid or something. Or partition
record invalid or something like that. Basically, it says I do not have a valid
drive/partition to install.

Hmm...okay, so maybe my disk is all messed up? Tried booting Win98's boot disk.
Then, using (MS) fdisk /mbr, then (MS) fdisk to partition...then reboot with
floppy and format c:/s.

Success! No errors, no bad sectors, nothing. I thought..what the fsck?!? Tried
to install Venus again on that seagate drive...but it STILL gave me the same
error as above. No valid device to install.

Then...I decided to try Festen (Mandrake 5.3) just to see if it's a Venus only
bug...and what do you know? It installs without a hitch.

I honestly have no idea what the problem is. The seagate drive has been
performing without any problems whatsoever ever since I bought it 1 year ago.
And I've used it with NT, Win98, Festen with no probs. Oh, I also tried
installing FreeBSD 3.2 and it also works.

I don't know if this problem exists for RedHat 6.0 (I don't have a copy) but I
don't really care about Red Hat...it's Mandrake that I want to use. Strangely
enough, Venus installs with no problems on the other drives I have. (a number of
Seagate and Quantum drives of various denominations)

For your info, the 'problem' hdd is:
Seagate ST32532A
LBA, UDMA 2, 2.5 gig.

Now that I have Festen up and running on this drive, I'll try to install Venus
on it...

RE: [newbie] Exploit in Java for Netscape

1999-07-12 Thread James J. Capone

Cool. I do not think it has Java running in KFM by default. I am not sure
though. Well you should have checked it out in the Netscape browser so you
could see what it did.. But if you do a
root@localhost>killall -9 X(Provided by Axalon)
That will kill them. Also I think I may have found a way that Java can be used
to spawn off many processes so that you may not even be able to run a simple
command at the line. I saw a article about it in the Linux Magazine. I then
noticed a possible hole in Linux Netscape browser that may allow command to be
run without any root access. Do not know though. I am going to try to run it on
myself. I will let the Linux community know..

Well, there are some nice exploits at www.insecure.org, too.

I managed to avoid it with kfm. I don't know if kfm had java running or not.

Re: [newbie] swap space

1999-07-12 Thread Niels Larsen

When trying to telnet to a Mandrake 6.0 machine I get this,

collect (ROOT) ~>
Trying 192.168.10.12...
Connected to 192.168.10.12.
Escape character is '^]'.
telnetd: All network ports in use.
Connection closed by foreign host.
collect (ROOT) ~>

but I can ftp into it. I can also telnet and ftp out from
it. And, I can export an nfs volume, and mount it remotely.
Do anyone know where to look for the cause of this trouble?

RE: [newbie] Umax 610 scanner

1999-07-12 Thread Ty C. Mixon

Thanks to you and Civileme, but it doesn't support mine - it's a parallel
port model. I wrote Umax and asked them - we shall see. To date I've
usually managed to confuse Tech Support horribly by actually knowing what I
want, and what I'm doing. O};)

The closest you'd get, is the standard KDE e-mail program, KMail. It does
resemble Eudora in many ways. It has filters, multiple account support etc.
The most important thing it lacks, is e-mail folders (it supports multiple
folders, but not trees of folders). This will be introduced in the KDE2.0
edition if I'm correctly mistaken.. :)

Sure - as long as you don't do stuff like running both versions
simultaneously using vmware or something, there's no problem with that.

Depends on what you're doing. If you don't have "Out of memory" problems,
there's no need to add more swap space.
