I don't know which items in Mandrake are compiled specifically for Pentium, but I suspect probably all of them are. That would seem to be the easiest way, as it should only affect the make file.

If you don't have a Pentium, what is it supposed to do when it received an unrecognized opcode? Some processors just stop working. Others call some bad-opcode-handler interrupt. Even if your processor calls an exception interrupt, the setup may not have made it do anything besides hang the computer.
[newbie] Ethernet card help!!!
I am trying to get my Linux box ready for my trip to college this fall, and have a question. I have a SohoBasic Plug and Play Ethernet ISA Adapter in my box at this time... Will this card work with Linux as is? Do I need to get other drivers?? Is it a lost cause??? Thanks in advance! Nighthawk
Re: [newbie] Mandrake 6.0 install continually hangs
Actually I've tried both the Mandrake and RedHat 6.0 installs and they do the exact same thing and hang in the same place. Plus I wouldn't think that pentium optimizations would cause a hang on the install before anything really happens. >From: "William Meyer" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> >Subject: Re: [newbie] Mandrake 6.0 install continually hangs >Date: Sun, 1 Aug 1999 19:23:08 -0700 > >It's my understanding that Mandrake is built with Pentium optimizations in >place. The packages in Mandrake are compiled with Pentium-specific optimizations, and probably don't run on a 486. You might be better off with RedHat 6.0, or a version of M6 compiled for 386/486, if there's one available.. -Tom
Re: [newbie] SB PCI 128
Alan, I have the same sound card. The PCI128 actually has the Ensoniq ES3100 chipset. I downloaded The Open Sound System from opensound.com and installed it. The card now works in X-Windows for me. Re: [newbie] Mandrake 6.0 install continually hangs
It's my understanding that Mandrake is built with Pentium optimizations in place. You may wish to try Red Hat 6.0 instead. - Original Message - From: Colin Eddy <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Sunday, August 01, 1999 7:01 PM Subject: [newbie] Mandrake 6.0 install continually hangs > Is there a reason why a machine that could run RedHat 5.0 can't run Mandrake > 6.0?
[newbie] Mandrake 6.0 install continually hangs
I currently am running RedHat 5.0 on my old 486 and would like to install either Mandrake 6.0. Unfortunately no matter what I've tried, the install continually hangs in the same places (depending on the method). I have tried both and FTP and HD install. I made disks of both the boot and bootnet images(HD and FTP installs) and tried installing. I get all the way through the TCP/IP setup or the SCSI setup and it starts to load the first things. It gets the base/stage2.img just fine and does the download of the second stage ramdisk (watch the lights on the ethernet card flash and stop or HD light), but then it just hangs on this window and won't continue. I've also done this with both the regular and updated disk images. Is there a reason why a machine that could run RedHat 5.0 can't run Mandrake 6.0? If this is the problem why would it be hanging in this place? I don't even get to the point where it wants to know if it's a full install or update. It seems like I'm having some sort of transitioning difficulties. If anyone has run into this problem or has ideas on how to get this worked out, I'd really appreciate it. ___ Get Free Email and Do More On The Web. Visit http://www.msn.com

Re: [newbie] Booting the system errors
You need to make sure you upgrade to the newer Modutils and Initscripts. Atleast that is what I had to do when I compiled a 2.2 on a system with a 2.0.36 Goto the Mandrake Site and click on Updates. I just got the 2.3.12 Kernel to compile on my system and I am running into the Same problems with the sound. Good Luck, James J. Capone Webmaster: http://linuxuser.8m.com Asst. [newbie] SB PCI 128
I have a problem and hope someone can help me.. Running Mandrake 6.0 w/ a SB PCI 128. The problem is I cannot get CD sound thru the sound card. I have run sndconfig and it detects the card as a ES1371, then goes on to test the card. This fails. I get a message, something like audio. chourus, flange, echo, etc, all sorts of terms relating to the audio processing. Then if I try to do a manual config, I get /dev/dsp is not known. I have tried sndconfig --noautoconfig ( same results ) sndconfig --noprobe This card DID work fine with Mandrake 5.3. I am NOT certain, but I *THINK* it worked upon Mandrake 6.0 install and "broke" the first time I ran Gnome. I have dloaded the various esound upgrades and any related Mandrake sound files. Thanks Alan [EMAIL PROTECTED]
[newbie] Well kernel compilation could go smooth...
Hi all, well just compiled a new kernel...and of course all worked with 2.0.xx kernels, but we needed improvements so now I have a problem with kernel 2.2. The sound does not work. I have an old ISA SB16. This is how sound was configured in the kernel: CONFIG_SOUND=m CONFIG_PCSP=m CONFIG_PCSP_MIXER=y CONFIG_PCSP_LEFT=100 CONFIG_PCSP_RIGHT=100 CONFIG_SOUND_OSS=m CONFIG_SOUND_SB=m CONFIG_SOUND_ADLIB=m CONFIG_SOUND_SOFTOSS=m CONFIG_SOUND_YM3812=m # CONFIG_LOWLEVEL_SOUND is not set But of course we don't have sound. Can someone help please. What am I missing? It's just a SB16. TIA Jacek
[newbie] Booting the system errors
Hi all, I compiled a new kernel and get some error messages during boot: Aug 1 23:06:41 localhost modprobe: can't locate module lo:48 Aug 1 23:06:41 localhost modprobe: can't locate module lo:49 Aug 1 23:06:41 localhost network: Bringing up interface lo succeeded Well I have no idea what module lo is and apperantly it's missing, how to get rid of this error message? It repeats many times. And of course some errors with swap. Aug 2 01:06:34 localhost swapon: swapon: warning: /dev/sda1 has insecure permissions 0660, 0600 suggested Aug 2 01:06:34 localhost rc.sysinit: Activating swap partitions succeeded Well when setting to the suggested permissions I the swap is not used anymore, activating swap fails with something like wrong options. PLZ help...TIA BTW I searched the RedHat server and before they had some mailing lists, but curretly the server does not know anything about their mailing lists, no info at all. TIA Jacek
RE: [newbie] ADSL~installation through linux
What DSL modem/router did you order? Also what mode will you be running in? PPP or Bridging. Hopefully it is an external router that you have coming. If it is a PPP USWest account, I can help you get it up and running using the Cisco external they offer, and connecting it to your hub.. Good luck and let me know if I can help. [newbie] Root File System Error
Gooday Folks; Acer Aspire 233 AMD K6 c/w MMX 64 mb RAM 6.4 gig HD I installed the Macmillian Publishing version of the Linux-Mandrake Red Hat 6.0 yesterday. I used the Partition Magic included to partition my drive, and using LILO I can boot up to either O/S. Win boots up fine, but the Linux side of life produces the following error message, when "checking root filesystem" it says.. /dev/hda3contains a filesystem with errors, check forced. after a brief period it then says... /dev/hda3:Unattached inode 371486 /dev/hda3Unexpected inconsistency; Run fsck manually ie: without -a or -p options I looked thru the list archives and the only error that seems similar, it has been suggested that the newest kernel be downloaded, as there is some bugs. Any ideas? :) Is it software..or my installation or partition was not right? [newbie] Slow Bandwidth Fixes
For those of us that don't yet have access to ADSL or a T1 connection you might want to try the following. 1 - Locate the rc.local file and add the following line to setserial to boost the port speed setserial /dev/ttyS spd_vhi replace by the port number (ttyS0, ttyS1, etc.) mine is /dev/modem 2 - Turn off Van Jacobsen compression for PPP. In the PPP argument box of KPPP add 'novj'. 3 - Set the MRU and MTU to low values. Both MRU and MTU can be set to 296 or 576. Number 1 gives me the most improvement. If you are doing large file transfers you might not want to skip number 3 but if you just surf the web give it a try. Try these one step at a time. That way you'll know which step gives the most improvement and if one happens to slow the connection down or has no effect you'll know which to reverse (although I have never had that happen).
