[newbie] Matrox Millennium (TVP 3026-220 64bit RAMDAC) problems
Hi, I am having problems configuring my video card under Mandrake Linux 6.0. My card is a Matrox Millennium (TVP 3026-220 64bit RAMDAC) with 4MB of WRAM, running on an Intel 166, with 96 MB of RAM. The problem I get is that auto probing the video card during installation fails, and hence I have to configure the card manually. Although my card works under X-Windows after manual configuration, it is very slow and the screen tends to black out after heavy screen movement. In fact, after any window movement, the screen shakes somewhat. Has anyone else had similar problems, and does anyone know how to fix it? All help will be greatly appreciated. regards, Tim. __ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com
[newbie] some problems with Linux
Hi, I already have the linux installed on my pc. The problem is: I can only use the features and applications when I login as "root". During installation, I chose a user name and password for a normal user. But when I login as the non-privileged user, I cannot run ANY of the applications! What did I do wrong? Also, I read that the "usercfg" or "usercfg &" command allows you to add users. I typed that command in the x-terminal and it doesn't recognize this command. Why?? And if I want to change the monitor and video card selection after installing Linux, how would I do it?? What can I do to resolve these problems? Here is some info about my computer (hope this helps...) computer: Pentium MMX 166MHz 32Mb SDRAM OSes: Windows 98 & Mandrake-Linux 6.0(The complete Linux operating system 6.0) thanks, Brandon
[newbie] Applications from CD
Hi! The Powerpack release of Mandrake 6.0 includes a CD of personal use and demo applications. There is a folder for each application, inside each folder there is an RPM and a short text file which describes what the program does but not how to launch or use it once the rpm is installed. Is there an FAQ on the application CD somewhere that provides at least terse instructions for launching and using the applications? I have searched around on the Mandrake site and discovered descriptions of each app that match the descriptions on the CD but I haven't found any launching and using instructions anywhere. Probably a silly question but it would be nice to be able to use some of these apps. -- Traci Collins, MA Professor of Computer Education Colorado Mountain College http://www.rof.net/wp/tcollins/traci.html

I would love to do that, but I have the hotmail account from a long time, since before it was owned by Microshaft. The only way to close the account is to not use it for 120 days, and I can't go without checking it for that long. [newbie] TrueType fonts
I believe that this question has been answered a couple of hundred times, so I apologize... I've been on vacation. I have just installed Mandrake 6.0 and cant see the TrueType fonts. I very much remember asking for them when i was "selecting specific packages" on the install. I even downloaded the usual fonts people use when they send you those awful word .doc's (arial, times new roman, verdana, etc...), but i dont know on which folder to put them or how to make Wordperfect see them. Hi Stephan, You will need to go into /etc directory and using your favorite editor open the file inittab. change the line in that file that reads id:3:initdefault: to read: id:5:initdefault: This will tell the system to start in runlevel 5 which is Xwindow GIF89ai -- -- David M. [newbie] Laptop&Docking Station Install Problems
I need a real NUT cracked on this laptop install. What happens when Linux detects your drive.. but it has an invalid geometry according to linux? Also what do you do with Linux when you have an older bios that needs a Diskwizard or simular to recognize the full drive?? Mine detects my first 540 drive no problem as hda Dectects my second 1 gig as 535 63 63 and says.. Invalid geometry 63 heads??? and then states hdb invalid It then goes to hdc and logs in a VALID configuration for the hdb 1gig drive. THis gets me threw the install no problem.. but the system will not run on it. I get it crapping out every time I get to Optimizing Drives hdb [Failed] Then hdc - it locks up!!! EVERY TIME. James

RE: [newbie] Questions?
The Diamond modem is a software modem, also known as a winmodem. It will only work in Windows. There is no way to make it work in Linux. The reason I know this is that I made the mistake of buying one for me and one for my wife's system a little over a year ago. Since then I have found out that virtually every internal PCI modem is a winmodem. Also, there is a website out there dedicated to letting people know which modems are real modems and which ones arent. The url is http://www.o2.net/~gromitkc/winmodem.html Darin - > -Original Message- > From: Kenneth Efurd [SMTP:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] > Sent: Sunday, August 08, 1999 12:39 PM > To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] > Subject: [newbie] Questions? > > Has anyone gotten Mandrak 6.0 to work with a Diamon Sonic Impact S70 or a > Diamond Supra Express 56k V.90 modem, both are PCI. [newbie] install or update 6.0 ?
Hello, I currently am running a dual boot pc with win98 and Mandrake 5.3. Using Lilo as boot manager. 5.3 is running ok but would like to move up to 6.0. What's the best method to install? Wipe linux partitions and start fresh or run install and upgrade. Any help appreciated. Dale
[newbie] BerolFTPD
I have a Linux Mandrake 6.0 box up and running, and I am experimenting with switching over some or all of my NT servers over to Linux. I am having a problem, however, with gaining access to the box VIA FTP. I have set up the user accounts (using linuxconf) with FTP being a supplimentary group, and then set up the group FTP with the users I desire to have FTP access. When I try to FTP into the box, no matter what username and password I use it denies the access. I can, however, log in anon, but I get nothing in the files except for what appears to be about 10 linux system files in theLib directory. Otherwise when I log in anonimously the directorys are blank I have searched the man pages for: ftpd, berol, and berolftpd and I come up blank Can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong ? I have followed your instructions and I am happy to say that I can no listen to audio CD's no probs. However, I can't get any system sounds (wav's etc). The problem is that I cannot find the Sound Blaster Live in Sndconfig, and to be honest I don't know if I need to use sndconfig, and if I do, how to use it :-) Any help would be appreciated, Quake refuses to run without sound :-) -- --Powered by Linux Mandrake-- Jayce Steadman ICQ:- 40694192

If my .fetchmailrc file looks like "poll britlinks.co.uk user USERNAME password PASSWORD no dns" I am told that there is a parsing error. If I make it "no dns poll britlinks.co.uk user USERNAME password PASSWORD" I get a similar error. I'd like to make the localhost name britlinks.co.uk so that calling britlinks.co.uk in a browser opens my local pages and e-mail works using britlinks.co.uk in place of localhost. I tried changing the name in linuxconf but httpd refused to work after that. [newbie] ram problem
Hi all, Since upgrading the kernel to 2.2.9-27mdk I can not get linux to recognise anymore than 65 meg of my 128meg of ram . I fixed the problem when using 2.2.9-19 by adding the "append = mem=128" to the lilo.conf section for that kernel. This time however it does not work. I have also tried linux mem=128 at the lilo prompt. This only causes the bootup sequence to hang. Any ideas? TIA Stephan Rex P.S. I have also "clean" re-installed linux multiple times in an attempt to fix this problem.
[newbie] slight gnome problem. Help?
Gnome's taskbar and start button have disappeared. I was fiddling with gnome last night. When I logged on to gnome this morning, the taskbar and start button had vanished. I tried the user manual for help but found none. How do I get them back? Right now there is no way to log out except to type "reboot" in a terminal. Thanks in advance, Steve W. _ Do You Yahoo!? Hi - I have the DLINK DFE-530TX working most satisfactorily by following the instructions 'Using DFE-530TX on Linux Redhat 5.2' I obtained from the DLINK web site.
