well, i figured it out. my monitor has an onscreen menu for making
settings. it also shows the current hsync and vsync. i looked at it
while running the noisy x. i then booted into windows and compared the
values. they were very different! so i edited XF86Config and commented
out the modeline that was causing the noise. i then ran x and there was
less noise than before. after a few more '#', i finally found a
modeline that boots up perfectly and gives no noise. my screen looks
better than ever! even better than it looked in windows! give this
method a shot and i am sure it will help your problems too.

however, while, freshly after installation xwindows works just fine,
as soon as i try to reboot i am stuck with :
starting x font server :
and that's it. doesn't move anymore after this, and the
only fix i have found so far is to reinstall the whole works.
wherupon, of course, xfree won't work anymore.
would anybody know of a way to fix things without reinstalling everything

RE: [newbie] Linux for home consumers?

1999-08-15 Thread Aaron deRozario

I am a home user and I find Mandrake perfect. I don't think the learning
curve is any steeper than for any other OS. The problem most people find
when trying Linux is that it doesn't do things the Windows way. This
doesn't necessarily make Linux harder to use it is just different to use and
it is the process of learning to do things again that some have described as
a 'learning curve'. Most commentators have used Windows and have forgotton
the length of time it took to learn to do basic things in Win9x. My mother,
an avid user of Win95 for three years still calls me regularly about 'simple
things' she hasn't learnt yet or has forgotton.

Mandrake has done an excellent job in blending Linux and KDE. Although I do
write a few very simple shell scripts to execute programs, the drag and drop
features in Mandrake (dragging programs onto the panel) means that you
rarely ever need to use the command line, even for executing programs.

As for its suitability for home use. Most home users will use a computer
for email, internet, word processing and entertainment. Email and Internet
are not a problem. Kppp is a great dial in utility (much easier than
setting up internet using Win95) the news and email clients more than
adequate for home use. The File Browser works fine as a web browser a lot
of the time and you always have Netscape if you need a more powerful
browser.

For word processing the obvious choice is the freely available version of
Corel WordPerfect 8. Now I know it is not flawless (the on screen
presentation is very dubious), however it is more than adequate for home
use. There is of course Star Office, though I have never tried it myself.
Applix is another alternative if you want to shell out the cash and I've
found it very good.

For Entertainment you obviously do not have teh same variety as you have
with Windows. As far as games go I have Quake 2 and Civilisation - Call to
Power, both of which work extrememly well (a few quirks with Quake but I'm
working on that). OF course I never get to use the computer since my
girlfriend got her hands on Civ CTP.

All in all this combination meets all my home needs more than adequately.
In addition Linux teaches you about things. I've learnt more about how
networking works, what protocols are, what compiling is etc than I ever did
using Windows. Given Mandrake is so cheap it's well worth a punt.

[newbie] file system caching, file system errors

1999-08-15 Thread Ian W Douglas

Hey all.

Maybe this is an expert@ question, but here goes.

We're setting up a distance education centre at my church and while the
maintenance crew is working on the classroom, from time to time we find
that the power to the server room gets cut off.

Upon rebooting, the file system almost always has errors and therefore
hangs on boot-up asking for the root password before letting the person at
the console check the file system and corrent any errors.

Question 1.
I've used another *nix before (QNX) and know that under it you can limit or
just plain shut OFF file system caching. Would this help at all to reduce
file system errors if the power to the system gets cut off?

Question 1a.
How would I limit the file system cache size on the system? It's a P-200MMX
with 80MB of RAM.

Question 2.
Does anyone know of any UPS systems (with software) that works under
Mandrake 6.0 to watch a serial port and if it detects a signal from the UPS
(that the power is cut) that it will issue a shutdown command?

Thanks much.

Re: [newbie] arrgh vfat and msdos unknown?

1999-08-15 Thread Will

I found the reason for not being able to mount FAT drives, and that is because
I was apparently using an older version of the kernel. I found loadlin.exe,
which I was going to use to boot regularly, in the Lnx4win directory with
vmlinuz (the kernel) and initsomething.gz. well that vmlinuz in Lnx4win
directory is old, and if I boot using it I get incorrect kernel vers errors
and can't mount vfat and msdos partitions. I figured out that I can boot with
the bootdisk I made during installation and not get those errors, but now I
just gotta figure out how to get the correct vmlinuz like the one on the
bootdisk into my c:\linux directory.

Another "fun" thing with Netscape for Linux (4.5x version) is that when I'm
trying to edit HTML using the built-in HTML editor, sometimes saving changes
(so that in case Netscape crashes I won't lose what I've been working on)
will cause Netscape to shut down!
What I've been forced to do is edit HTML using Star Office's built-in HTML
editor and then "clean it up" in Netscape once I've saved it to disk from
Star Office! I find that MOST annoying. :-/

My gf had the same exact problem (i.e. all her settings were correct, she could
send data but not receive). What fixed it for her was something that's been
suggested a lot lately on this list for improving connection speeds: In kppp's

Same thing here.. Call your ISP and ask them if VanJacobsen ( VJ )

This is SOMETHING with RH 6, that both me and a fellow linux user ( who

[newbie] Modem connects; no Internet

1999-08-15 Thread Harry Ellis

My US Robotics 33.6 modem dials my ISP, they "talk", the Kppp reads
connected, but nothing works.

I've installed Venus 6.0 as the only os on a stand alone pentium, trying
both the Linuxconfig and the Kppp to connect. I'm hoping someone will
recognize this as a problem they've previously solved.

I can see packets going out when I ping with a remote DNS, or try an
Internet address in Netscape. Same with mail. But when I check "details"
while connected, the information is always the same: 19 packets in
(always), no more packets in, and a growing number of packets out while my
computer keeps sending.

I've talked to my ISP (they were not excited about Linux) and apparently
PAP, Dynamic, DNS,Domain Name, News, Mail are all correct. On the website
of US Robotics I found the dip switches for my modem are apparently correct
for Linux (at least for Slackware). My ISP, Sympatico.ca, says that Linux
can be hooked up to their service, but they don't say it very
enthusiastically.

I'm hoping there is a box I can checkmark, or a number I can change, and
magically this problem will go away. I've reinstalled a few times to clear
out any mistakes I've made, and I even installed an older Redhat (5.2) and
hooked up using Linuxconfig with the same one way results.

Two weeks of reading and searching has not helped me. The Mandrake creators
have put together an attractive, easy to install package, and I especially
like the KDE gui. But if I can't get online I can't really use it. And that
would be a big disappointment for me. Has anyone seen anything quite like
this? I've noticed similar problems in the letters but not quite this one.

[newbie] Further to FX-3D (AD1816) Sound Card Problems

1999-08-15 Thread Murray Strome

I wonder if anyone can help me get my sound FX-3D sound card to work under LINUX
-- or alternatively, suggest a low cost card which will work well in both LINUX
and Windows and be simple to configure in both systems.

I have an Acer FX-3D sound card. If I type sndconfig as root the probe does not
detect
anything. However there is a selection:
AD1816 (Acer FX-3D, HP Kayak).

If I type OK, I get a table with a heading which says "Please adjust the settings
to match the dip switch settings on your sound card" , from which to select
various options (I took the card out and could not find any DIP switches. All it
says on the card is AD1816 FX-3D.

 I/O Port IRQ DMA 1 DMA 2

0x530 5 0 0
0x534 7 1 1
0x604 9 3 3
0xe80 10
0xf40

I had printed out the system settings from Windows 98 for all the
devices. I have the following information which seems relevant:

Class: Sound, video and Game controllers
 Device: Acer FX-3D Sound Controller
 Resources:
   IRQ: 05
   I/O: 0220h-022Fh
   I/O: 0388h-038Bh
   I/O: 0100h-010Fh
   DMA: 01
   DMA: 00

I am not sure what to select (I assume IRQ 5, DMA 1, DMA 0), especially
for the I/O. I tried a couple of different ones, but got the following
error when I tried a sample sound:

The following error occurred running the modprobe program:

 /lib/modules/2.2.9.19mdk/misc/AD1816.o
: init_module: Device or resource busy

(I get the same type of message on booting with this the only item [FAILED]
Typing OK puts me back to the message saying no PnP or PCI sound cards
found in your system.) I tried every I/O selection with IRQ 5 and DMA 1, DMA 0
and a few other combinations with every otehr IRQ listed, all with the same
result. I have not yet exhaustively checked every possible combination.

Thanks to anyone who can help me.

Re: [newbie] Printing With Netscape (rerun)

I had this problem a while back, RH 5.2 or something.
I have a Canon 4200.

Here's what fixed mine.
In KDE ( I'm assuming your running this) open a terminal and
login as su ( root ).
Run printtool

Configure.
Close.
Reboot.

Your symptoms are exactly like mine were, and running printtool under a
level 3 loging ( command prompt )
never fixed it. Only running KDE and THEN running printtool fixed it.

It sounds like you are trying to install the XFree86_3Dfx-XFree86Setup rpm. It
requires the VGA16 X server to run. You can install the
XFree86-VGA16-3.3.3.1-58mdk.rpm from the install CD.

i do this same thing by using an alias in my .bashrc file. edit .bashrc

alias xwin='startx -- -bpp 32'
then logout and login and it will work. just, before you do this, make

[newbie] Re:

If you boot to DOS, by means of a disk, or the DOS modus of Windows, you
can give the following command:

fdisk /mbr

This will overwrite the master boot record with the 'normal' code. Now
LILO has placed some code there. Next time you can choose to have LILO
installed in the boot record of the partition where you installed linux.

a ramdac is something to do with your video card. i guess that means
that your card or the drivers are having trouble. when you do
xf86config, and go into the card def stage, be sure you select your
video chip set, and NOT the card name you are using. look in your cards
manual for the chip set that it uses, and find that in the list. for
instance, i have a diamond stealth 3D 4000, but when i set it up i just
use generic s3 virge gx2 chipset with 4 meg memory, and it all works
fine. just follow its instructions for what xserver to use, and also if
you should probe clocks and such.
let me how that works.

Could you quote the exact text of the messages? If they scroll off the
screen too quickly during boot, you should be able to use `dmesg` to view
boot messages from a command prompt.

> How do I mount my FAT32X and FAT16B drives onto linux? Is vfat used for
> FAT32 and msdos used for FAT16?

Nope. Both should accommodate FAT12, FAT16 and FAT32. The difference
between vfat and msdos is that "vfat" preserves Windows 95 long file names
(and lowercase letters!) while "msdos" uses the old MS-DOS 8.3 format.

> I know the commands are: > mkdir /mnt/windows and /mnt/ddrive

Well, that would suggest that either a) you don't have these filesystems
compiled into the kernel or b) the module isn't loaded (although it should
be by default). Again, it might help if you included the exact error
text. Since you've already re-installed twice, and are experiencing other
problems, you really might try re-installing again. A stock installation
of Mandrake should have full support for DOS/Windows filesystems.

I believe that FAT32 is faster than FAT16 for reading, writing, etc.
FAT32 also has the advantage of a smaller cluster size. What does this do
for you? Well, let's say you have a small file you save on your drive-
only 1 or 2 kilobytes. On a 2GB FAT16 partition, cluster size is 64kB, so
this file _occupies_ 64kB, even though it's less than 2kB in size. With a
FAT filesystem, every file must occupy an integer number of clusters.
Cluster size is determined by partition size. The smaller the partition,
the smaller the cluster size. I don't have the conversion table for
cluster size, but I know it's available on the Internet. FAT32 has smaller
cluster sizes for larger partitons- my 7.2GB drive was once formatted as a
single FAT32 partition with 4kB clusters.

Re: [newbie] Install to 2 Hard disks

1999-08-15 Thread Brian Leas

Okay, here is my suggestion:

1. Boot up from a WIN95 startup disk. Format your Windows drive(I'm
assuming it is the first one)
2. After formatting, run dos fdisk and delete the current dos partitions.
3. Reboot your machine with a Linux boot disk and run Linux fdisk.
4. Setup your partitons something like so:
/boot 20MB
/
/swap
/home (for program files)

You could put the boot , swap , and /home partitions on the first drive and
the /home on the second or whatever floats your boat.

Hope this helps :)

if your windows can handle fat32 (win95b and up) then you should
probably use it. it offers many enhancements over fat16, and is
supposed to run faster. plus linux can read it as 'vfat' so you dont
have to worry about settings up a fat16 partition.

David,
You need to recompile your kernel with sound and pppd supported, go into
/usr/src/linux-2.2.9, or whatever dir your kernel is in . Type make
xconfig, to use the Xwindows config for it, or make config for the
normal one. Go through the whole thing and be sure to select what you
need and ppp and sound support. When done click save and exit. Be sure
to type make clean and make dep after that. Type make bzdisk to put the
new kernel in effect and make a boot floppy. Reboot and everything
should work.

Something I stumbled across as I downloaded this is to makesure you
download netscape-common along with the netscape you are using (i.e.

Then when you do the kpm to install it, make sure the 'replace files'

I grabbed the updated lilo rpm to fix the VGA preset problem but now I
seemed to have killed lilo altogether. It tells me every one of my kernels
is too big. They all worked fine before the update. anyone have this
problem?

Sounds more like you slid a little too far down the menu and accidently
hit the 'Exit' choice instead. That would cause what you describe.
Can't say I've ever had 'Close' close all the windows.

For my pnp modem, not only did I have to use isapnp, but issue a setserial command
also. It worked, but I reconfigured the modem to jumpered status and it works just as
well.

have you looked at the Five-Minute PPP? http://www.knowplace.org/ppp.html

There is a version of Explorer for one of the Unixes, but it will not work in Linux.

There is serious doubt that MS will port Explorer to Linux.

You could always run Explorer under Windows in a VMware virtual machine running on
your Linux box, but that's too much trouble.

[newbie] Unpredictable Netscape closing?

1999-08-15 Thread Alan Schussman

Hi-

Here's one that's not really a problem, but it's an annoying "feature" of
Netscape 4.6 on Mandrake 6.0. When I have multiple navigator windows open,
the behavior of the "close" icon in the upper right of the window is
unpredictable: Sometimes it closes only the particular navigator window,
which is almost always what I want it to do, as that behavior is similar
to other mulit-window browsers. But sometimes it shuts down Netscape
entirely, including all my other windows.

I know, I know, "upgrade" will be my answer, and I will do so. But I'm
curious: has anyone else encountered this behavior? It takes me by
surprise every time.

Boot from your MS floppy and run the MS version of fdisk as follows:

fdisk /mbr

This re-writes the mbr "back" to the standard MS master boot record.

Then you can start again.

I find it easier (for me) to use Midnight Commander; just type mc at the prompt. You
get a Norton Commander clone file manager. Highlight a file and use F4 to edit, F10 to
exit (and save). It also works well for ftp.

[newbie] Tape backup question

1999-08-15 Thread John Aldrich

Has anyone used the Sony "Superstation" 10 GB backup system with Linux? It's
a paralell port item, so I suppose you'd have to set it up much the same way
one sets up a paralell port ZIP drive, but since it's a tape backup, would
you mount it differently? Does anyone know if there's a SCSI version of that
device??? :-)

Sorry, that's about the size of things... you have to go to Microsoft.com
and find their "IE" web page and download IE from there (although WHY you'd
want to "pollute" your Open-Source O/S with a closed-source browser is
beyond me! Besides...that's supporting the "evil empire" of Bill Gates!

[newbie] Configuring for 100dpi screens

1999-08-15 Thread Richard Lamont

Having just installed Mandrake 6.0 (including KDE) on my system I found
that I had a lot of trouble with font sizes.

Everything seemed to be geared towards an assumed display resolution of
around 75dpi. This seems pretty old-fashioned, given that most monitors and
video cards can support better resolutions. Even with a 2MB video card and
a 15-inch monitor you can get 1024x768 at 16 bpp, so a lot of people must be
wanting to work at around 100 dpi these days.

I have written a brief explanation of how to configure Mandrake for 100 dpi
resolution at:

[newbie] arrgh vfat and msdos unknown?

1999-08-15 Thread Will

well I got those 2 emails telling me how to get into my windows drive
but both of your approaches didn't work. I reinstalled linux somewhat
successfully (for the 3rd time!) but get a few warnings about the wrong
kernel ver in system.map and an error with mounting somewhere when
booting. I don't know if loadlin is doing it since that was the first
time I've used it. Anyway.
How do I mount my FAT32X and FAT16B drives onto linux? Is vfat used for
FAT32 and msdos used for FAT16? I know the commands are:
mkdir /mnt/windows and /mnt/ddrive
mount -t vfat /dev/hda1 /mnt/windows and
mount -t msdos(i'm assuming for fat16) /dev/hda5 /mnt/ddrive
I've tried both in the console as root and it says unknown file system
or something like that. can someone please tell me what I have to do to
get linux to support FAT16 and FAT32? Or just FAT32. I can convert my
other drive if I find out FAT32 is better than FAT16.

ok, one last side-question:
of the FAT16 and FAT32 file systems, which is superior in file
read/write/transfer speed and efficiency? I purposely created another 2
gig FAT16 partition (faster than a 13 gig FAT32 partition) to hold all
the stuff I want to host with linux. I'm under the impression that the
smaller a partition is the faster and more efficient it becomes, and I
feel this would be very important if I'm hosting and files are
constantly being created/written/removed. please correct me if I'm
wrong.

It's me again. This should answer your question:

Micrsoft doesn't support Internet Explorer for Linux
James Ryan

No emotion for me. Fact is Micrsoft doesn't support Internet Explorer for
Linux. Hence Netscape is my best choice. When Microsoft decides to give up
their 'not invented here' syndrome and support the same platforms as
Netscape, THEN I may switch. Until then, IE is simply not a strong enough
reason to downgrade to Windows

Why does 'everyone' want to use a M$ browser on Linux? What's wrong with
Netscape? You should realize that when M$ will release their browser for
