I have a Linksys16 nic much like your card with support for rj45 and bnc. In order to use coax I had to boot to dos and run a setup program to set the card to bnc. [newbie] RealPlayer G2 5.0 for LINUX
I should have been paying more attention to previous listings, but I couldn't get my sound card working at all till today. I have I am using Mandrake 6.0. Of the versions of RealPlayer that were listed, it looked to me as if the Red Hat 5.2 version was the most likely to be the proper one. As instructed, I changed the name from rv50_redhat5xi386_rpm to rv50_redhat5xi386.rpm then typed rpm -i rv50_redhat5xi386.rpm (logged in as root) I got no error messages (nor any other messages), so I assume it installed somewhere. However, I don't know where it is, nor what it is called. So how do I get it to work now, or have I done something wrong? Thanks for your help. Murray Strome
[Fwd: [newbie] SoundCard]
Santiago, I too have the CMI8330 soundcard, detected and wresteled for days trying to get it to work. I have had no luck either. When I posted here, no one answered. I don't know if that's because no one knew what to do or had tried the card. Re: [newbie] Large, unmanageable screen objects
Richard~ When at the lilo promt, type linux 3. As for the not finding the programm, I am stumped. I am not sure about this, but you can use the whereis command to find XF86setup. XF86Setup uses its own resolution and the like, so i dont think it will give you hell w/ the big screen problem. Just think, if you had a movie theater sized LCD flat pannel monitor, your settings would be fine as is. Hehe. But then you could just buy another system if you had that kind of cash... Jerrud
Re: [newbie] Large, unmanageable screen objects
im not sure what the XF86Setup is, but there is xf86config. it will, create a file called XF86Config that will tell your x windows how to work. i recommend running this. there is a setting to disable the virtual desktop size. also, turn off your html in your email. :P > Richard wrote: > > After this latest installation, I endeavored to get into XF86Setup via > the console but I was told by the system,' no such command'. [newbie] Large, unmanageable screen objects
After this latest installation, I endeavored to get into XF86Setup via the console but I was told by the system,' no such command'. I logged in as root doing this. So how do I get this XF86Setup to come up so I can use it and I hope it's not too big on the screen or I won't be able to use it and this XF86Setup will have been all for nothing. I see I have KDE, GNOME, etc but they are all beyond control due to very large screen size. Is there some way short of still another installation that I could get a 640 X 480 X Windows screen going so that maybe I could get XF86Setup going and be able to make necessary changes to bring my screen display down to a more manageable size? Like maybe 640 X 480. When I selected during my Workstation installation a standard VGA monitor it was with 640 X 480 screen size. But when the X Window came up, it was as large as it's always been since I've so recently gotten the hard drive to install Linux-Mandrake on. I simply _cannot_ bring the screen image(s) down to where they are small enough so I can see all that is on the screen. Haven't been able to do that, yet. I'll be thankful for any pointers. Richard

[newbie] Sound Card and UMP (plus timidity) plug-in for Netscape
After serveral postings, I really did not get any help on setting up my Acer FX-3D sound card (AD 1816 based). However, I downloaded and installed the drivers from Open Sound and at least the KDE CD Player works, so I guess I now have sound. I went to a site (www.bluemountain.com) which has music (in Windows usually played by Crescendo). However, there is a plugin called UMP for LINUX. I followed the instructions and downloaded and installed it, as well as something called timidity. However, when I try the bluemountain website, I get a message in Netscape saying "timidity.cfg" no file or directory. Now, in the instructions for UMP, it says this may happen if timidity.cfg is not in the expected directory: /usr/local/lib/timidity Actually (and I don't really know how it got there), it is in /usr/lib/netscape/usr/local/lib/timidity The instructions then say to set the TIMID-DIR environment variable to the name of the alternative directory. I am not very familiar with bash (which is my shell) -- sort of the default for Mandrake, and I cannot figure out how to do this. Can anyone help me? Thanks. Re: [newbie] tar and gunzip troubles - Solution Found!
Well here is how I fixed my problem. After I un-gunzipped the file, it became unknown to what the type of file was. So, in the properties window, i slapped a .tar extention on the file, and un tar`ed it from the terminal window. worked like a charm! hurray :) jerrud
Re: [newbie] Large screen objects -Richard hope this is better :)
Richard, Try doing a ctrl-alt-backspace when you get into X. This will bring you back into a console, because it cancles the X gui. Now, make sure you are in root, because XF86Setup wont work if you are not. Just type XF86Setup, and watch the caps, caps in linux are diffrent characters than normal lettering. Type this in even if you cant see what is going on. If you know the verticle and horozontle frequencies for your monitor just select them from the list. XF86Setup has a nice looking GUI to use, so dont think that this is hard :) Also, for your video card try to locate it in the list. And if its not listed, than try to find a card that best matches yours. (some people might argue w/ me on this). Click on the Probe button when you are in the vid card screen. Then just configure everything else. (ex. mouse...) Make sure you select smaller resolutions like 640x480 and a depth of 16 bit. Then, save and try to run X one more time. I hope this helps Jerrud ICQ:13978481

Has anybody tried to make a boot image for dosemu? I'm running Mandrake 6.0 and when I tried to create the image using 'mkdexe' (sorry I don't remember exactly the command right now, but it's in the README) the process failed. Also, the script setup-hdimage fails because it doesn't find some files/directories, so I guess the rpm included in the distribution isn't complete. Is that right? Toshiro

Re: [newbie] Large screen objects
Jerrud, Thanks for the try but the images are so large that I cannot even find the place to get into the console with. Let me ask you how, when you installed you LM copy, did you have good perfect matches with video card, monitor,, etc so that you were able to easily slide into LM with no trouble at all?. With me, I have a rather generic monitor and video card is not an on-the-nose match and I have to guess around in the 'custom' section of monitor setup what my monitor specs are. Well, I've guessed at about all of them and my LM screen still comes up with these oversized images. Okay, when I get into the op system after logging in, is there is keyboard combination that will get me into console mode so that charachers can be seen as pretty well normal-sized (like 640X480) and then I can bring up XF86setup. Don't know if that will help but I'd like to give that angle a try. A quick explanation of `tar zxvf filename.tar.gz`: The "z" option says to run the input through gunzip first. The "x" option says to extract files from the archive (instead of adding files to the archive) The "v" option says to print out the names of the files you're decompressing. The "f" option says to use the following file as input. I'd suggest downloading the file again, and starting over. -- -Matt Stegman <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
[newbie] More on the Video GUI problem
TO: Anyone from Mandrakesoft I just answered a listmember's question about the ATI Rage Fury. The answer was that there appears to be no support for it in the list of suported cards on http://www.xfree86.org/3.3.4/ati3.html, which is the list for the 3.3.3.4 release. But today I stumbled on a computer offer from a link on your home page. This link is to Mediacom: http://www.mediacom.com/cgi-bin/Web_store/web_store.cgi?page=29pc_station.html and Mediacom is offering an ATI Rage Fury card as an option on their line of computers with Linux Mandrake pre-installed. If it is true that the XFree86 Project does not support the 128 bit ATI cards (as they state in their list): http://www.xfree86.org/3.3.4/ati3.html then how can they offer this card as an option and how can the users asking about this card get it to work with mdk 6.0? Jim, you'll be needing Samba. Check out their web site at http://www.samba.org. You can install it via an RPM, or tar file. Using an RPM *should* set everything up for you. I *think* it will also put the two daemons in your inetd.conf but am not sure. You can then use "smbclient" to connect to all the PC's. I just bought and EXCELLENT book yesterday called "Teach Yourself Samba in 24 Hours" bys Sam's. I've already read the whole thing and am starting through it again. [newbie] recompiling
Anyone know what a - Out of memory System Halted error means? After recompiling 2 different kernels and adding them to lilo, the 2 kernel gives this error message.

Thanks for the response. Hopefully there will come some drivers for the scanner, or I will just have to get one that is compatible I guess. Ed

I'm not aware of any way to talk straight netbui (thats the right protocol isn't it? ;-] yay i'm almost forgetting the nightmares), but it's bound tobe easier then setting up ipx between them. -- MandrakeSoft http://www.mandrakesoft.com/ --Axalon
[newbie] video setup
Hi all, I have installed Mandrake and have everything working. But the video server for my tnt based card shifts the screen upon entering KDE. I know there is a program that allows you to tweak your scan settings. I just need to know the syntax to start it. It used to come up automatically with 5.3 when you change video servers. TIA Robert

[newbie] need to set up simple network
Hi I need to connect my 2 Mandrake Linux 6.0 machines to a Windows 95/98 network. Is there a simple way to do this? The Windows machines are set up to share files and printers only; no IP addresses are involved. P.S. Please no negative comments about MS as I still need them for AutoCAD and SoftDesk! Many thanks in advance. Jim

[newbie] Scanners
I have a Mustek 600 III EP Plus scanner. I don't know how to configure it in Linux. Star Office says it need SANE in order to work. How do I implement SANE? Or will this Scanner even work with Mandrake-Linux 6.0? Its a parallel port scanner. Ed
[newbie] Anti-spam programs
I was browsing on Linuxberg and found a couple neat-sounding programs, one called "Ricochet" and another called "Sugarplum." Ricochet is supposed to bounce SPAM messages back to their original sender and Sugarplum is supposed to (somehow...haven't looked at the doco yet ) "poison" SPAMMer databases with so much bogus info that the databases are either useless or are discarded. Anyone used either of these Has anyone out there got something better??? I've become quite adept at tracking down the original SPAMMER's ISP and getting them booted (many use Hotbot or one of the other "free" email services, so I guess it's no big loss to them!) OTOH, if they're using Hotbot or mail.com, I'd love to poison their databases to they have to go out and spend MORE money for new databases that I can further poison! I want to make it too expensive for these a-holes to continue spamming! John
Re: [newbie] Wanted - IE5 for Linux
Hi Knew here myself - still waiting for my Mandrake Powerpack to be delivered, but watching all the postings gives me some idea what problems to expect - nothing much I hope. In actual fact your not asking such a stupid question, because rumour has it that the version of IE for Unix was created under Linux. Somewhere in a big vault in Redmond there is some code marked "Do Not Touch - Only Meant For Use Under a Proper Operating System". Rumour also has it - not sure how true the rumours are but - MS employ a few programmers who work on Linux all day long. If they exist then it should be fairly easy to spot them, because they wouldn't spend most of the day looking at the BSofD and are 100% productive. Rumour also says that BG banished the code, rejecting point blank any idea of releasing IE on a decent platform that gave software away for free - yikes - what a awful idea that is. Re: [newbie] Wanted - IE5 for Linux
Why would anybody ever put a M$ product on an OS like Linux? Why not just use W98 or something that is designed not to operate so well. What could IE5 make so much easier that you need to have that? - Original Message - From: JK <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Sunday, August 29, 1999 1:02 AM Subject: Re: [newbie] Wanted - IE5 for Linux > Ron Smith wrote: > > > Anyone have a URL for IE5 for Linux?
