This just goes to show true support you get on this list. I thank everyone.
You have all been a great help. Even the ones who tell me to quit whinnin.
I am sorry but I just say what I think needs to be said. I still love

[newbie] Star Office

1999-09-07 Thread Michael Lim Shek Sia

It seems that everyone likes Star Office and I am the odd one out that have
a problem with Star Office.

I have downloaded Staroffice 5.1 from the net and have installed it
sucessfully
onto my PCs running Linux Mandrake 6.0 and Redhat 6.0.

However, after the installation, all other components of the Linux, eg.
Console,
X windows, games can no longer be launched. Upon frastration, I power
down
the machine and switched it back on again in the hope of some magical
remedy, only
to find my Linux hang up at booting stage.

I suspect that Staroffice has overwritten or modified some of my
essancial files during
installation. I would appreciate if anyone can help.

Currently I don't see this ability in kmail, but a little source-code
hacking should fix that. In fact, I think it would be awfully nice of
kmail if it allowed the user to choose the commandline to open browser
links. I've seen a similar feature before, but that was for printing
("Enter print commandline: ").

Re: [newbie] screen size

1999-09-07 Thread Matt Stegman

I agree- that whole desktop-bigger-than-the-screen thing bugs me, too.
You can get around it by making sure you either don't have a "Viewport"
section or commenting said section out (by starting the line with a pound
sign: Shift-3).

The other problem is that it sounds like you have 2 resolutions defined in
XF86Config:

> I use the Xconfigurator RIVIA TNT driver.
> I choose the 800 X 600 and the 1024 X 786 at 24bit
> I can switch between the two by clt alt + with no problems

When X starts up, it reads the section applying to the chosen color depth,
and then sets the desktop size to the largest resolution present. Thus,
if you have listed "640x480" "800x600" "1024x768" "1280x1024" then your
desktop size will be 1280 pixels by 1024 pixels. When you change
resolutions by Ctrl-Alt-+ (or minus) your desktop size will not change.
As far as I can tell, there is no way around this. This will happen,
regardless of your "Viewport" settings.

[newbie] Netscape - Sound - Printer

1999-09-07 Thread Westbrook

Hi all,

#1
I was wanting to upgrade Netscape but they have 2 versions at
Download.com (glibc2 & libc5). Which one should I use? or should I get
it from someplace else?

#2
My sound was not set up during setup. I haven't got the foggiest idea
how to go about setting it up. I tried "sndconfig" at the terminal
prompt as root but it did not detect it and it was not on the list. It
is a Yamaha SYXG50 any help getting it working would be appreciated

#3
I have a Cannon BJC - 6000 Printer. During setup, I chose BJC - 4000
(mine
wasn't on the list). I can't get it to print anyway. Any help would be
appreciated.

Thanks
Russ

Guys, don't give others the impression that Americans are like this.
Everyone, many of us have not been outside our country and some of these
conditions, especially the customs problems, are hard for us to believe.
Myself, I have already heard much of this from an American living in

used PC parts and some times he didn't receive them.
Please give us time we are all learning to think globally.

Ed - In the /etc/XF86Config file, down near the bottom of the file,
is the "Screen" subsection. Within that subsection are definitions
for the various video modes. If you look at each, there is probably
a 'viewport x y' line. If you set the x, and y to both be 0, you
will disable the viewport capability - the ability to have a larger
display than will physically fit on the screen.

I can switch between the two by clt alt + with no problems
I have no problem getting into console mode and running Xconfigurator.

You might want to check out the APC site at, www.apc.com as they recently
released a program for auto shutdown and I think it might even be free in
both senses of the term. Not sure it would matter what UPS you are using.
I think its called Power Chute or something. Also if you are running any
*nix OS w/ Apache they have a prog. that watches the power on those systems
and can do a safe shutdown.

The kernel does not depend on any other packages. You can safely update.

Hi Ken. I'm not familiar with the free version of P.M., I've got 4.0; but a
few questions. First, when you created the free space, did you create an
extended partition to cover it? Did you create your Linux partitions as
logical partitions inside it? Try that, and make sure you designate the
correct filesystem for each logical partition you create, linux swap or
ext2. And when you install using Disk Druid, don't re-create the partitions,
just edit and set the mount points. Good luck!

[newbie] UPS Auto-Shutdown

1999-09-07 Thread Scott Miller

Been running LM 6.0 for about a month and love it. The only thing I don't
yet have set up to my satisfaction is auto-shutdown when my UPS loses AC
power.

My UPS is a CyberPower Power99 which came with monitoring and shutdown
software for Windows only. It's connected to ttyS1 (COM2) with the supplied
serial cable and it works fine with Win98. I would really like to get it
working with Linux since I don't use Win98 much anymore. I read the UPS
How-To, but it seems to be partially out of date and of course there's no
mention of my "off-brand" CyberPower UPS. I downloaded the upsd software,
but am not sure if this will work, so thought I would ask for help before
proceeding.

Any suggestions on how to get this working as easily as possible?

LBA (Logical Block Addressing) is just an added feature of hard drives.
It is not necessary for any OS. It is most important though that you shut
off this feature in the BIOS if your hard drive doesn't support it.

[newbie] To little Wine

1999-09-07 Thread Stuart Burbridge

Hi all,
Though I would have a little play with WINE.

So using the Kpackage manager I installed the Wine rpm from the Mandrake 6 CD.
All seemed well. But then I find all the documentation files, although listed,
are missing.
So I have no idea what to do with it to make anything work.

Do I need to have Windows installed? I haven't at the moment.
What besides the Windows Application's .exe file do I need to import (if
anything) and where to?
Then how do I use it?

If someone can point to an 'Idiot's guide to using Wine' I'd be jolly grateful.

Ah! I understand now!

Send a message with "subscribe linux-kernel" in the subject and body to

One other place you'll want to check is bugtraq. I don't have a URL for

Well, "su" was not a recognised command from #bash. Neither was "mkbootdisk"
nor "/sbin/lilo". Just to be clear: using the rawrite utility in DOS I
created a rescue disk from the rescue.img file on the Mandrake CD. I booted
from the installation disk, typed in "rescue" at the prompt. moments later I
was asked for the rescue disk. I placed it in the floppy drive and I soon
arrived at the #bash prompt. A very limited number of commands where
available in /bin, identical to those in /sbin. As I mentioned, the commands
you suggested were not available. I hope this more detailed description
helps.

You have defined it as a module right.? you have not entered te

right.?

If you have then check your system logs you may need to add irq and

If so at the prompt type 'mount root=/dev/hdaX ro' where X is where

I dont know much about caldera, so all i can do is guess, but i can
suggest the moprmal way one would do such a task in console mode,
then the commands should be the same weather it be caldera slakware
redhat or whatever.

findout what your card is, thats a thing you should know, ie look on
the box, phone the shop where it came from.
Read then /usr/src/linux/Documentation.networking/* maybe you card is
memtioned there.
/usr/doc/somewhere/Ethernet-HOWTO
The chances are you have installed the distribution kernel from your
installation, so ypu shopuld have all you need as modules already
installed.
Read /usr/doc/somewhere/mini/Modules

Then ifconfig to configure the card if nessacary.

That might not be much jhelp at first sight, but do what i say and
you should get a lot further than you are now.

The program netconfig might be called netconf at least it is here but
ihave redhat.
