Tell me about it, the 'authority' that is Mandrake support kept sending me

Re: [newbie] Forcing Network card to read off of 10baseT

Well, well, and I though us Brits were always screwed when it came to
shopping!! A pair of RJ45 crimpers for occasional ue can be bought from PC
world for about £15, about $25!!

But if you want to use the student method, use a pair of pliers!! Worked for
me! And my loopback tester consisted of the flashing lights on the two
computers I was connecting.

I have to say though, I have only seen crossover cables for sale once, and
they are more expensive, for some bizarre reason! Much better to 'adapt' an
existing patch cable.

Well let's see...the crimpers are about $100 but after you make the cable
you still need a loopback tester to see if all connections are good so
that's more $$$.

[newbie] Man I HATE this.

1999-09-30 Thread lalala lalala

Well.. that subject was to get your attention. :)

Ok... it's been officially 15 times installing Linux
over and over and over and over and (u get the idea).
I've tried RedHat, Suse, TurboLinux, PhatLinux (<-
that's a ghettolinux... it really SUCKS), Calera...

SOmeone shoot me.

I have 2 things that don't seem to work.
1) monitor - Gateway vivitron 1572 15inch (I have
refresh rates)

2) video card - Sis6326

Xconfigurator doesn't do crap. I've tried xf86config
(that's what the xfree86.org said) and I've gotten
some results (i.e. not just all white pixels but
actually mouse cursor and everything ... even some
color... wow) What I can't figure out is..

Whenever it asks me if I want my screen to be
'virtually' bigger than what my monitor can handle, I
choose no. Yet whenever I start xserver, this damn
thing will show me a cursor that is the size of a
walnut and what's worse, it will give me that virtual
screen thingamagic. AND the color seems to be all
messed up as well.

Can someone out there... someone with a heart of
gold... show me what the heck the problem is? THANK
YOU in advance.

[newbie]Magazine Distro...

1999-09-30 Thread Adam Koch

Let's try this again. I have tried posting to this address and
[EMAIL PROTECTED] to no avail.

Anyway, I have a question that maybe someone can answer. I recently installed
Mandrake 6.0 that came with the new Maximum Linux magazine (by the people who
put out MaximumPC). To make a long story short it does some funky things with
the default installation, including not creating a /opt directory. Because of
this I do not know where any of the startup scripts for KDE are. I would like
to use WindowMaker as my wm but can't seem to find .startkde as it is not where
it was on my other distributions (SuSE 6.1 and RedHat 5.3). If anyone else has
tried this install or knows where to look for the KDE stuff could you please
send some info my way?

Thanks,

Ok troops, I downloaded the new RealPlayerG2 (an rpm for us mandrake and

went. Seems to be working fine. Apparently Real Audio sets their beta

I believe it is for IDE as well. I got help from another member of our list at
his web site http://www.midkan.com/paulb/mycdr.htm
He tell you how to immulate a scsi drive with your IDE cd burner. so go check
it out. I believe that I have linux seeing my ide burner and I've actually read
the instructions that came with xcdroast today but I haven't got it working
yet. Tonight I'm fiddling with real audio again and seeing if I can get the
upgrade working.

Ahh...Ok. You still haven't told us *BRAND* names of video card and

Assuming you have average to superior intelligence (IMNSHO, most
people running Linux have at LEAST average intelligence ) you
probably selected your video card when given the option, so you
SHOULD be running the correct X-server, but just to be safe, what vid
card do you have, and what size, brand, model of monitor do you have?
For example, I'm using a CTX 1562D 15" monitor here.
Get back to us with more detailed info and we'll be glad to help. :-)

I have access to unshielded twisted pair cable (Cat5), plug ends, and
crimpers (i'd need to borrow crimpers), so if I really wanted to I can
make my own. But that means going through the effort to make my own (OR
buying a hub, damn, I don't really NEED a hub! I only have two
computers! AND I'm broke anyway!).

Well, thanks. Dense old me wouldn't have ever thought you needed a

Re: [newbie] red hat to mandrake via upgrade option

1999-09-30 Thread Brian J. Babiuk

Speaking from experience...you can upgrade, and it might even be preferable
to installing the system fresh. (Especially if you have a SB16 PnP sound
card, or possibly any PnP cards). I installed RH 5.2 some time ago. While
I am still on the lower end of the linux learning curve, I still pride
myself in knowing enough to get by. What I can't figure out I ask. I had
no problems installing RH5.2. And to be honest I didn't have much problems
installing Mandrake 6.1, except I couldn't get my sound card to work. It
all had to do with that stupid "isapnp.cong" file that sets up PnP cards at
boot up. It kept detecting conflicts with my card. (when infact none
exist!)I investigated the problem and discovered from the FAQ page that
no one knew why this happened, except that they suspected something to do
with the isapnp file and the 6.x build. So I ripped off. I was going to go
back to 5.2, and rebuild my kernel, and libraries manually. The idea really
didn't appeal to me. So in a last desparation effort, I installed 5.2, then
upgraded with Mandrake 6.1. The trick is though as someone mentioned
earlier, It won't upgrade everything. So think! Figure out what you need,
and manually select the packages. If you select something that needs
something you didn't select...don't sweat it. The install program will tell
you and ask you if it should install the packages!

I didn't mean to come across as an authority. I just am speaking from my
own experience. I hope this helps someone!

Hi all,

I have two hard disk drives. My primary master is a 14.4 GB that has
one partition (Win98 and all apps, data, etc.). My primary slave is a
2.5 GB with no data on it.

I tried to install Linux-Mandrake, with the intention of putting it on
the smaller HDD. I messed around with Disk Druid, and I thought I told
it to create two new partitions (Linux native and Linux swap) on the
smaller HDD. It messed up, though, and I had to reboot. Now, Disk
Druid, Linux's fdisk, and Win98's fdisk all say that that drive is not
accessable. Win98's fdisk is the only util that will actually do
something with the drive. It appears to let me delete the two
partitions and create a new one, but when I reboot, I run Win98's fdisk
again and it still gives me the same warning message and the two non-DOS
partitions on the drive. It appears totally FUBARed. Any ideas?

looking more and more likely. Besides, with a crossover cable you're

I have for the last few years been an Amiga refugee - forced into exile in
the Win world - and frankly hated it for the most part - every day felt
wrong, like it didn't fit - now I am a linux newbie (day 6), and in the
last couple of days was starting to notice little niceties which I had
nearly forgotten all about, and almost discovering them afresh. What you
have said has bought back many memories, and much hope for the future -
thanks for it. This could hardly have come at a more pivotal moment for me!

I had become stale and easy to please under Win - what piffle that stuff
really is - only a couple of days ago I found out for myself about the myth
of MS long file names - how can anyone think that an illusion like that is
ever going to succeed at doing anything other than fooling people? The real
macoy is what's called for. Enough of this damn fooling about, time for some
real stuff! OK MS you got one seaked past me - but now I have found you
out - god help you. Your credibility in total tatters now. It's so easy to
get taken in by sales type people these days - and boy does it happen
gradually - how incidious that cancer which is MS. Heads Up - the rats are
amongst the corn!

Sorry to have ranted a little, but some days the scales just fall from the
eyes, and you spot your culprit clear in the sights - I'm not religous by
any stretch of anyone's imagination, but that has to be like what people
mean when they say "a religious experience" - well at least I don't have to
wonder about that now! ;-)

I was going to take it e-mail, but why not share a good feeling? We're all
in this together aren't we?

Ian

There's some .rpm's and instructions at the above link. I believe
they're also on the Mandrake CD (the rpm's, not the instructions).

Someone mentioned that there's support in XFree 3 3 5 vga server
for 3dfx. I tried that (the 6.1 3dfx rpm's), and it didn't work
for me. I used the rpm's off the Mdk CD. I used the rpm's from the
link above a coupl'a months ago when I was runnin Phat (a dos Linux
version of Mandrake 6.0). I've since switched to the 'real' deal.

I didn't try to get 3D goin Patrick, 'cause in Linux I don't use
it. I built this system just to fly airplanes, and I don't figure
M$'s gonna port their flight simulators to Linux anytime too soon,
so I still switch over to W98 for that. The V3, clk'd to 178, with

Still no luck:

Options Indexes Includes FollowSymLinks
AllowOverride None

order allow,deny
Allow from 888.888.888.888 777.777.777.777
deny from all

OR:

Options Indexes Includes FollowSymLinks
AllowOverride None

order deny,allow
Allow from 888.888.888.888 777.777.777.777

What must I do???

Can't work: With the "order allow, deny" command, you tell httpd to
process allow first, then process deny, and override the allow settings.

You want "order deny,allow" instead.

Re: [newbie] loading imwheel at x startup?

1999-09-30 Thread bay56

Many thanks - that got it! - had to do full reinstall mind you - I always
said no to emulate - but it was still set to yes, so I edited some files
where I spotted the error, and it still would not go away!

I notice it works properly under gnome - well really properly, and also that
Nestcape blissfuly ignores it most of the time. Mid button is fine.

Wish with web browsers they would allow the focussed window to scroll,
rather than forcing you into the gutter every time to use it - kinda makes
it almost pointless again! ;-)

I'm still having problems even with script below;
Please verify my portion of access.conf for httpf access:

# Note that "MultiViews" must be named *explicitly* --- "Options All"

Options Indexes Includes FollowSymLinks

# This controls which options the .htaccess files in directories can

order allow,deny
deny from all
Allow from 888.888.888.888 777.777.777.777.777

Can you see any errors?
What is the syntax between IP number's ???

Also, should the following 2 lines be included???

AllowOverride None

Actually, this sounds similar to the initial problem that I had when I
installed 6.0. I discovered that, even though all the parameters that I had
originally selected fell well within the capabilities of my monitor, when I
chose a different set of even more conservative sync ranges and specified a
non-interlaced monitor, the problem vanished...

3dfx Voodoo 3 Glide 2.60-9 and XFree86 3.3.5

3dfx Gamers has released Glide 2.60-9 and the XFree86 3.3.5 server for the Voodoo 3
chipset.
Changes in Glide:

The previous release, Glide_V3-2.60-7.i386-7.glibc20.rpm, had an unnecessary
dependency on libNoVersion. This release removes that dependency and simplifies the
installation process. However, there are no functional changes in this release, so if
you
were able to install the previous revision you have no need to upgrade.

You are probably having problems with your video card...I had one of
those for awhile and it needed some extra tweaking in the conf file.
The Xfree86 web page has a faq section that includes help for setting up

If you can find one. You can get a 10-mbit only hub for as
low as $50, and that'll DEFINITELY be easier to find than a
"crossover cable." It may come down to making one yourself
if you can't find one. The information is out there on the
web just cut one end off your existing patch cable, get
a couple new RJ-45 plug ends and a crimper, then go follow
the instructions out there on the 'net!

Hello there, in reference to monitor xserver configuration problems, I had
them installing Mandrake Linux 6.0 with the SIS 620 AGP. The problem was
the with the Xfree driver (86.3.3). This problem has now been fixed with
the SVGA Xfree driver 86.3.5, which is also included in Mandrake 6.1
If you don´t wan't to switch to 6.1 yet, go to the www.xfree86.org
  website and get 86.3.5

Hope this helps a bit

Much cheaper and easier is to make it yourself out of your patch cord..

Check out http://avenir.dhs.org/windows/hardware/crossover.html for info
on how to make it.

[newbie] Starting httpd (or any program for that matter) on boot

1999-09-30 Thread Arcana

I posted this question before but I received about six or seven
entirely different responses and so I'm going to ask again.

I have the SOURCE of Apache 1.3.9 on my machine and I built it from
there, so it's NOT the RPM that comes from the Mandrake site.

Now that's cleared up...

Axalon's solution of using 'ntsysv' didn't work because httpd doesn't
show up in the list of daemons to execute.

Mr Jones' solution of creating a link in the init.d directory and using
chkconfig gives me an error like, "chkconfig does not support service
httpd".

I'm also hearing things like, "just put it in the ___ directory".

Basically, I'm now thoroughly confused and so I'd like to know what to
do.

On the same note, I'd also like to start up another program I have on
boot. It's Fuzzball (MUCK server) if you want to know. I figure that
this question falls into the same category.

Right now, it's a patch cord. I do NOT have a hub.
So all I need is to go to a store and ask for a "crossover cable"?

I downloaded this latest release, installed it, and I configured
Netscape to use it... BUT! when I click on a link from a web-site the
G2 comes up but doesn't play the file (link) I clicked on.

>From there to get the G2 to play the desired link I had to manually tell
it to "Open Location". To do this I had to "button 2" the link (open
link in a new window) so I can get the full link address to type it in.

1. Anybody know how to configure this thing to automatically play the
link selected?

2. How does one change the icon on the KDE desktop for the symlink I had
to drag & drop?

On the CD under /apps/drivers3DFX there's 6 .rpm's. Install
the 3 that begin with 'XFree86_3DFX' and run 'XF86Setup', choose
your V3 (2000, 3000, 3500) and your all set.If you don't have
the CD you can get them from Mandrake's FTP sites, or www.3dfx.com
has a link to Linux drivers (the same .rpms) on their Web page.

I have the 2k (143mhz), I run it at 178mhz in W98, so I
chose '3000' hopin it's runnin my V3 at 166mhz in Linux (?). All
in all, the 2D performance is better with Linux than W98, at least
on my system (PII 3.50x133).

[newbie] L-M screwed up HDD completely?

1999-09-30 Thread Kevin DeGraaf

Any ideas?

Voodoo 3 is supported in XFree86-3.3.5 that included in Mandrake 6.1.
Go and get Mdk 6.1 :)

Or u can just download the XFree86-3.3.5 from Mdk6.1 and upgrade it in
Mdk6.0.
It should work.

[newbie] Allowing DNS Zone Transfer

1999-09-30 Thread Eric Solberg

I need to allow zone transfers to my ISP (pacbell) for secondary DNS.
In my named.conf I have:

zone
"112.32.195.63.IN-ADDR.ARPA"{    type
master;    file
"112.32.195.63.in-addr.arpa";
allow-transfer{
ns1.pbi.net;
ns2.pbi.net;    };};

From my logs though I see that this is failing:

Sep 29 00:36:56 ns named[1419]: unapproved AXFR from [206.13.29.11].42136
for "112.32.195.63.in-addr.arpa" (acl)

Will this work if I change the allow-transfer entries to the ip addresses,
or is there some other access-control-list that I need to set up to allow
this?

Thanks,
Eric Solberg

Hi All,

I am trying to write a script that will run occasionally, and send email to
me
when certain events happen. I have hit a brick wall in trying to
completely
automate
either sendmail or mailto. I can get them to run automagically up to where
they
expect a text message followed by ctrl-d. I have tried unsucessfully to
get it
to send the contents of a text file as its message. The man pages for both
are
cryptic as best. The one for mailto seems out of whack to boot..

I found a win app called wsendmail that lets you do this all on one command
line:

wsendmail

I even have the source code for wsendmail. I fooled around and compiled it
in
Linux just to see what would happen, but it apparently nees a couple of
files,
and I don't know enough c to get around that!!!

Obviously, I would like to do the same in Linux.

Is there something else non-GUI that I could use to completely automate the
sending of email? Am I missing something obvious in the man pages?

Thanks,
Bryan

this only happens from select sites on the internet.
