[newbie] StarOffice Browseing
I have had Star Office 5.1 for a while now and just thought about posting this to the listserv. I can not browse my windows directories under Star Office for some reason. They are mounted for sure. [newbie] RLilo and Win98
I am getting ready in my clutzy ignorant way to try to rewrite lilo so that I gives me choice between Linux Mandrake 6.0 and Win98. Does anyone have any suggestions? Linux is on the master hard drive and win98 is on the slave. I notice that linux recognizes the win98 drive on boot-ing up although it doesn't seem to any but the first partition on the windows drive. [newbie] writing lilo for choice to boot either linux or win98
I just set things up with Mandrake 6.0 on one hard drive and win98 on the other. I used to have lilo set up to give me the choice of one or the other. Does anyone know how to do this? I don't have a K7 but I read an article at www.cpureview.com/rev_k7-linux1_a.html. It appears that the Pentium optimization specifically the MTRR prevent it from loading. I guess until an Athlon specific compilers come out, the only way to use an Athlon is with a kernel compiled for use on a 386. Re: [newbie] Changing Graphics and setup programs
I'd have to disagree with youwhen I start the installation of Linux-Mandrake the installer says RedHat. Now I wonder why that would be if there was no connection between the two. In the Introduction on page 4 of the Getting Started Manual it says "This award-winning distribution of Linux is based on the popular Red Hat 6.0 distribution and is 100% compatible with the Red Hat distribution." It also states "Linux-Mandrake has been customized by MandrakeSoft S.A. to be easier to install and use, without sacrificing any of the distribution's capabilities. I have (I should say I had) the same prob as you. To solve it, tweak with the file /etc/X11/xf86config file. U need to do it manually b/c Xconfigurator is uselss when it comes to configuring Sis6326. For example, u'll see that the Option "no_accel" is commented out. Uncomment it. There's few others u need to tweak. But I warn you even with the tweaking, u will gete very bad performance (ex. color and refresh rate) for some odd reason. --- peacemkr <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > Mandrake 6.1 .. > using xconf > I can't get beyond the background and a bunch of > white squares where the icons > should be. any right clicks bring up the menus but > with blacked out lines. > I have used the proper Horz & Vert info for monitor. > I have been trying the generic SiS6326 video card. > > Is it possiable I should use one of the other 6326 > cards instead? > Anyone else running the hot 161 card? [newbie] problems!!
Hi everyone, this is the first time I get on list. I have tried to install Mandrake 6.0 on my Pentium, 2Gb, computer without success. Two main problems occcur me: first - when the installation process gets to the rescue disk step it doesn't seem to find a diskette driver (the light doesn't turn on at any moment) and then obliges me to ommit this step. Second - After the diskette driver problem has occured LILO is not able to install itself, I have tryed all possible options given in the installation menus. My hard disk is recognized by LBA mode. So, after all these things I have all inside but I'm not able to reboot because I have no LILO installed nor a system disk to boot from. Can anyone help me?? I guess I will have tu put on some more information in order to bring you a consistent clue, but at the moment my knowledge about Linux is limited so when you were so kind to do so ask me whatever you find necessary. Thank you very much in advance

I downloaded the files need for the display driver under windows and those are the files I am trying to move...But you might be able to answer this.. can I mount all my windows drives (4 of them) under the same directory in Linux or does each drive need its own mount? something like this: /mnt/windowsC: this is where C: shows up... I was thinking something like this /mnt/windows/C for the c drive /mnt/windows/D for the d drive /mnt/windows/E for the e drive /mnt/windows/F for the f drive or how do I move drive to drive under linux. in all actuallity all I need is one drive and that is F where all my files go when I download anyways... [newbie] KDE help files are missing Kmail app won't start
I recently purchased a CD-ROM of Mandrake 6.1 from Linux Mall. I did a workstation install (not an upgrade) to my Gateway Pentium 100 PC. To my delight this fixed my video problems with my monitor that I was having under 6.0 but now Kmail will not start and KDE help files are missing. In addition the icons on the KFM viewer are screwed up. It appears that the necessary files to define the icons are missing as well. I makes me wonder if Linux Mall sent me a beta of 6.1 instead of the final version of 6.1. Re: [newbie] Moving files
I will only add one thing to the other comments already mentioned. The following web page is excellent: http://www.mandrakeuser.org/admin/amount.html#Handling Alright, one more thing: If the Windows partition is listed in the fstab file, you can mount it by typing "mount /mnt/windows". If it's not setup in fstab, then you'll have to mount it using the command, "mount /dev/hda1 -t vfat /mnt/windows". Hope that helps, Matt >From: Jesse Royall <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> >Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] >To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] >Subject: [newbie] Moving files >Date: Thu, 14 Oct 1999 20:50:02 -0500 > > I need to get some files from windows to Linux. the only way I have of >updating anything in mandrake is to download it under windows and move it >over to the linux drive.. now I need to know how to do that > >I used the /mnt/windows to get files I needed from linux to windows so >that I could send a file or 2. that worked with no problem.. but when I >try to go from windows back to Linux I got kinda lost. What should I do to configure a modem in Mandrake 6.0? [newbie] system crash after installation on AMD K7
Hello, I am trying to install Mandrake 6.0 on this system: AMD K7-600 128 MB RAM disk1: WD AC29100D (Western Digital, 8.5 Gb) as master on IDE1 * disk2: ST 36531A (Seagate, 6 Gb) as master on IDE2 * Diamond Viper V770 AGP (32 Mb) Sony DC_RW CRX-120 as slave on IDE2 soundblaster 128 PCI * modem Rockwell HCF 56K PCI The components marked with (*) were in my previous PC (DELL PII-400) on which I could install Mandrake 6 without problems. Disk1 contians a primary NTFS partition (which contains WinNT4) and an extended partition which is divided into two NTFS logical drives. Disk2 contains a primary FAT partition that contains Win98, and extented partitions for win98 data (fat) and Linux The installation runs without problems. After the reboot, however I get a system crash (every time). The last lines before the crash occurs are: checking POSIX conplyance mttr These are the things that I have tried: - replace the CR-RW with the CD_ROM from the DELL PC - remove the HDD on IDE 1 - empty the HDD on IDE 2 (no win98). So the problem has nothing to do with the presence of Win98 on disk2. It occurs also if Linux has the disk all to itself. Anyone out there have any idea what goes wrong? If not, you'll have to specify the whole thing. Here's what I have (it auto-mounts my Windows partition): /dev/hda1 /mnt/dosvfatdefaults0 0 When I want to get a file off my Windows partition, I just type "cd /mnt/dos" and then cd to the directory where I have the file located! It really sounds like you haven't mounted your windows partition. Type "mount /mnt/windows" at the prompt (as root, minus quotes) and see if it works. If it doesn't, you'll have to specify the partition to mount, the filesystem type and where to mount it. Good luck! John

Re: [newbie] Upgrade to Octuber Gnome.
I'm not sure, but I would think that it is not a wise choice to mix distros. Mandrake does some stuff it's own way, and so I would think does RedHat. These are not the same distributions any more. I think that is why all the Mandrake packages have the "mdk" in the filenames, just to remind us. Re: [newbie] Moving files
Go to a konsole screen or window in Linux and use the command mount -t vfat /dev/hd#%/Windows . The "#" sign is replaced with the HD designation (a, b, ... ) and the "%" sign is replaced with the partition number ( 1,2, ... ) on which your windows partition resides. The Folder name /Windows is the folder in your Linux filesystem under which you wish to access the DOS partition. For myself, I do not want to have the DOS partition mounted all the time, so I never tried to learn how to do this, but I think there must be a way. Then when you are finished with your DOS partition, you can use the command: umount -t vfat /dev/hd#%/Windows I hope this is clear and helpful, Ernie ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) - Original Message - From: Jesse Royall <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Thursday, October 14, 1999 9:50 PM Subject: [newbie] Moving files > I need to get some files from windows to Linux. the only way I have of > updating anything in mandrake is to download it under windows and move it > over to the linux drive.. now I need to know how to do that > > I used the /mnt/windows to get files I needed from linux to windows so > that I could send a file or 2. that worked with no problem.. but when I > try to go from windows back to Linux I got kinda lost. Re: [newbie] dual boot setup
Hrmm..., sounds like LILO is trying to boot Linux through DOS, as you surmised. If you can boot Linux with a boot disk, try editing your /etc/lilo.conf file with a text editor from within Linux. To do this, use either a konsole window from X-windows or run the following command from the Console screen outside of X: pico /etc/lilo.conf This will start the pico editor with the /etc/lilo.conf file loaded. Pico is quite simple to use, it's about on a par with the DOS edit command, however it is a keyboard oriented editor. I think you will have to do this as "root". Then check the file to be sure that LILO is loading Linux from the partition on which you have installed it. I'd almost bet that for some reason, the configuration file is pointing to the DOS partition. Then in any case, when you are sure that the configuration file is pointing to the Linux partition, quit pico (the exit options are at the bottom of the display), saving any changes you may have made there, and run the LILO tool by simply entering the command lilo [ENTER] at the prompt. This will rewrite the LILO boot loader to the MBR with your new configuration, or with the configuration in the lilo.conf file. I do not know if this will work, but it sure sounds better than another re-do! Let me know how it works out, Ernie ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) - Original Message - From: Tony Zocolillo <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Thursday, October 14, 1999 2:23 PM Subject: Re: [newbie] dual boot setup > Ernie, > > Thanks. [newbie] Weird PPP problem
Hi I've been using Mandrake for quite a while, and recently upgraded to 6.1 While I was adding some RPM's that didn't go in from the CD during my install, I've noticed something odd has started happening Kbiff, Kmail (actually all of the internet programs) don't seem to want to use pppd if I connect to the internet after I've started the program. What I mean is...I usually leave KBiff running in my in tray..when I connect to the internet, what used to happen was when Kbiff did it's usual poll, it would see it could connect to my POP3 mailbox and just do what it's supposed to. Now..even when I force it to check, it dosn't seem to do anything (and I can't see any network traffic happening during the checks). If I start a new copy of KBiff...it works like a dream I've checked KPP and theres nothign weird there in teh setup (changed all the options and checked just in case). Looked at /etc/ppp/conf and removed the lock option. Deleated and Reinstalled the kdenetwork RPM. I'm basically out of ideas anybody got any suggestions on where else I could look? Andrew
