[newbie] Netscape Mail Threading

1999-10-16 Thread R_Yeo

Hi all,
Netscape hgas a habit of putting my message threads in the wrong
places, ie sometimes a mail doesn't joing a particular thread and
sometimes a totally different message gets appended to a thread. ANd
this has not been helped by some posters who either post something twice
or their email program foes it for them. Has anyone else seen this, or
am I the only one (not the double posting).
I have tried to get Netscape to re-sort by first sorting by date and
then change to sort by thread, but to no avail. Any workarounds, or any
recommendations for a more capable mail client? Oh I miss Eudora, but
not the crashes. It seems rather silly if I have to run Eudora in
VMware.

Any suggestion, recommendations appreciated.

Re: [newbie] SiS 5597/5598

1999-10-16 Thread Jesse Royall

XF86 is what I used...
goto
http://www.xfree86.org/#getting

click the download... it will then send you to a FTP site.
goto the binaries directory
goto the linux-ix86-glibc directory
download:
preinst.sh
postinst.sh
extract
Xbin.tgz
Xdoc.tgz
Xfnts.tgz
Xlib.tgz
Xlib.tgz
Xman.tgz
Xset.tgz
Xjset.tgz
then goto the Servers Directory
download:
XSVGA.tgz
XVG16.tgz

Then you need to goto:
http://www.xfree86.org/3.3.5/RELNOTES9.html
read it and print it since you might need it for reference.
That will get you half way there... you will then need to install those
files per the Reference that I noted. Then when you get all that
installed you will run:
XFSetup to configure your display.
I will have to get outa windows and back into Linux to give ya the
details on the driver and such.
but from what I can remember you have to select the video card (BTW, it
will ask you if you want to use the config file when you start that and
hit yes.). and then there is a option at the bottom about the card list..
click on it... then it will bring up a card list and select the driver
for that and click on Card details... this is where you have to kinda
play with what you got. just make sure if you have the 5597 selected you
use those details and such. it took me a few trys to clean up the text
but it does allow you to test the video before you get it all said and
done there is a option that says to run ld -something or another..run it
and it the text is blacked/boxed then go back and try again something
isn't setup right... I should have the details later when I get back to
Linux. I will check out the details and get back with you. I am trying to
configure a internet connection and it keeps dumping me for some
reason

RE: [newbie] Netscape Tinytype

1999-10-16 Thread Ken Wilson

To find out if you have the 100 dpi fonts installed type the following

rpm -q XFree86-100dip-fonts

Do this from the text console if that's how you log on or from a
terminal window if you start up in XWindows.

Notes: Changing fonts is not just a question of editing fonts.dir.
There is a tool that will create a proper fonts.dir file for you. It
has been a while so I can't really tell you what the name of it is. The
mail list archives on Mandrake could help you though, this subject has
been worked to death.

After that you can delete the fonts you are pretty sure you won't be
using but don't change anything else, except for the count value at the
very beginning of the file. That has to be equal to the number of fonts
the fonts.dir file actually refers to.

There is some talk of deleting reference to all fonts that aren't
referred to as iso8559-1. I personally cannot say one way or another if
this is a good thing or not. My advice on this point is to invoke
"Tinker's Rule #1" which is "Make a backup so you can restore the system
to what appeared to be normal for most folks before you got your fingers
in it and screwed up the works."

I'd follow this mail list in the Linux half of this box but I'm frying

I stand to be corrected but I would also think you need to have the 100

dmesg tells me that
hda: dma_intr: status 0x51 {drive ready seekcomplete

It repeats each of these lines several times and then
follows with a line saying DMA on hda is shutdown.
I guess this means some kind of Direct Memory
Conflict. Can someone start me on my way to solving
the problem, please? Where do I look, etc. Running
Linux is no help on this one.

actually paid for Linux-Mandrake, but I got Redhat for free from a mag. And
I constabtly use Win95 and NT for everything. I also disagree that only
linux is for people who want to "know" their machines. I find NT the best
overall OS, even though it's more expensive.

Re: [newbie] Thanks for insights and one more question

1999-10-16 Thread Benjamin Sher

Dear Seth and friends:

Whenever you exit Linux improperly (su - to shutdown -h now), Linux will
run the fsck on your hard drives to check and fix and file system
errors. It does this magnificently, by the way. It's like the ScanDisk
in Windows, only (I am told by experts) much better and more reliable.

However, what many may not know (please correct me if I am wrong), is
that Linux will run this "check forced" scandisk EVERY 20TH BOOT,
regardless of whether your system needs or not. That's standard
practice.

If there are those still having problems with the SiS drivers I have a

I will try to get the links for the new drivers. they can be found the

Re: [newbie] Thanks for insights and one more question

1999-10-16 Thread Jesse Scott

Nothing to fix really, simply means that you have reached the maximum
number of times Linux will mount your hard drives without checking them for
errors. Normally it only checks for errors if it was not properly
unmounted before the last reboot, so if you always properly shutdown your
hard drive won't be checked for errors until you hit this maximal mount
count feature. It is simply preventative maintenence and should be nothing
to worry about (unless it's coming up every time in which case something is
probably amiss...)

That's just Linux checking your hard disk partition for errors. Kind of like a

Re: [newbie] NetScape 128bit encrypted

1999-10-16 Thread Benjamin Sher

Dear Paul and friends:

Think twice about Netscape's 128 encryption version! It is only secure
and effective on sites that support 128 encryption. Otherwise, you are
getting only 56 encryption and a false sense of security.

To read all about it and get your free real, total 128 encryption
security, go to:

www.fortify.net

(notice the "net", NOT .com)

In a nutshell, install the 56 encryption Netscape, then fortify it with
Fortify 128 encryption, which will give you full 128 encryption
EVERYWHERE on the Internet, whether the other party uses it or not.

It's absolutely free. Same, by the way, goes for Internet Explorer. But
Fortify currently supports only Netscape, up to the latest 4.7 version
(for Windows, Mac and Unix/Linux). It's real easy to install. Read their
README file on their site. Read it from beginning to end and learn about
the pitfalls of shopping online. Get the real 128 encryption protection.

You cannot add Fortify to your existing 128 encryption Netscape. You
must install the 56 encryption Netscape and then fortify it with Fortify
up to 128 encryption. They offer extensive ways to test your Fortify
encryption to make sure you reall have 128 encryption protection. So,
after installation, MAKE SURE YOU TEST IT BY FOLLOWING INSTRUCTIONS ON
THEIR SITE.

Yours,

Benjamin

Have you considered using tar to gather them up, gzip to compress them,
and ftp to transfer them to the other computer?

Sometimes the "quick and dirty" solution is the best. :) Of course, it

I suggest you re-read the cd-writing howto. The necessary information

CDRW. A good program to erase CDRW is gcombust. I don't mean to be rude

Sometimes it is necessary to re-read a document, since some of them are

are going to need strong reading skills if you want to succeed as a Linux
user. Sorry about it but it is the cold hard truth.

You might want to also try Biff as your notification tool. Set it up with the
right info (try 180 or 300 seconds) and every few minutes it will check your

You'll want to do:

typically, you can do the following to find the path to a program.

which XF86Setup

you could also do a find from the command prompt.

find / -name XF86Config

I think that StarOffice5.1 is a great program. You can save files as
word97 file or a starOffice file. The only problem that I have with
starOffice is the amount of memory that it can take up. It is all
around great. It also comes with a version of Excel and PowerPoint that
you can open and save files as the word versions. The best part of all
of this is StarOffice is free. I use it instead of that damn
office2000. I have a copy 2000 it and I will not install it because of
StarOffice.

kdelibs does not fully install, most of it makes it in, but it does not

[newbie] Run LEVEL 5

1999-10-16 Thread Jesse Royall

Is there a way to change the run level? I have command line only
availible to me but Mandrake insists on booting all the way up to the
Desktop where I can't see a thing to beging with. I SWEAR Bill Gates has
his fingers in with Madrake or Linux (Mandrake would be my choice right
now). OR windows 98 has somehow leaked over to the slave drive and
infected Linux. Everytime I turn around something keeps me from
proceeding to my goal.

But for now I need to know how to get to the command line after Linux
boots. I can't do a thing with the desktop. is there something like a F8
key or some little button to push to kick me back to the line? I have
tried reinstalling Linux 6 times 6 different ways and they all have sent
me back to the KDE. I even deleted the partition (which usually works)
and started from scratch. any ideas?

[newbie] Mandrake 6.1 installs perfectly!

1999-10-16 Thread Benjamin Sher

Dear friends:

Am too tired after a night of downloading (just 90 minutes),
installation, organizing desktop, etc. The printer problem, as Jose
Sanchez suggested, was caused by the switchbox that connects my two
computers. With the printer cable connected directly to the computer,
Mandrake had no problem configuring it perfectly. I tested it out in
printtol. Perfect. I then added the swithbox and once again tested
printtool and everything is working perfectly. In fact, printed out a
whole document. Only problem that remains is that I cannot get a queue
message (and therefore a dequesing message). When I do a lpq, I get: "no
entries."

The DISPLAY problem also disappeared when I entered the correct command
in .bash_profile.

Otherwise, Mandrake is lovely and all my RH rpms installed perfectly.

And, oh, the FTP problem was one of those unnervingly simple problems in
Linux: I typed /linux/Mandrake/6.1/Mandrake when I should have left the
last Mandrake off and just typed "/linux/Mandrake/6.1" Same as in Red
Hat, you type 6.1/i386 but you don't type Red Hat after it because that'
s the directory the install is looking for. Somebody on the Mandrake
list suggested this. First time I did this (at 8 p.m.) it was a total
success. My thanks to a list member whose name I cannot recall because
of my frantic state.

On the whole,I am very pleased.

By the way, here is something that might be of interest to some of you:
the rpm update function (that some have said does not work) does in fact
work PERFECTLY. But you have to log out of KDE (no need to reboot), just
log out and log back in as root. In root, the update functions perfectly
and I was able to add five current updates.

All my thanks to everyone for your wonderful help and encouragement
during this crisis.

[newbie] [OT] Just tried kmail!

John,

All your talk about k-mail made me try it out. It's really ok! I like
it better than Netscape, but you are absolutely right about the HTML!
It produces nothing but headaches! I'll probably keep using it for my
email, now that I tried it. Now if KDE would only get the browser

need to go back to Windoze at all. Just thought I'd let you know, you

Re: [newbie] RLilo and Win98

1999-10-16 Thread Ernest N. Wilcox Jr.

In a console screen, you can usr the "man lilo" command and the "man
lilo.conf" command to get the information you will need. I think that
there is a HowTo document as well on the subject. I have included my
own lilo.conf file below. As you can see, it is not standard, as my
default boot is into Windoze (for the sake of my family), and I do
not use the default labels (I am too lazy to type out the entire words
either linux or dos, so I use "l" for linux, and "w" for Windoze). I
only include it so you can see what's in the file, and maybe with the
docs in your Linux system, it will be of help. LILO is, and must by
nature be specific to each system it is installed on, so the best
help you can get will be found in the documentation.

boot=/dev/hda
map=/boot/map
install=/boot/boot.b
prompt
linear
timeout=50
other=/dev/hda1
label=w
table=/dev/hda
image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.2.9-27mdk
label=l
root=/dev/hda3
append="mem=80M"
read-only

If you want a hard copy of some usefull Linux commands, one source is
the Linux for Dummies book. It is not as good as I would have
hoped, but it does have a few really usefull things in it to help us
"dummies" who are new to Linux, including some info on LILO.
I don't know how usefull this will be, but I hope it helps.

[newbie] boot disk & LILO installation crash down

1999-10-16 Thread granduke

Hi everyone,

this is the first time I get on list. I have
tried to install Mandrake 6.0 on my Pentium, 2Gb, computer without success. Two
main problems occcur me:

first - when the installation process gets to the
rescue disk step it doesn't seem to find a diskette driver (the light doesn't
turn on at any moment) and then obliges me to ommit this step.

Second - After the diskette driver problem has
occured LILO is not able to install itself, I have tryed all possible options
given in the installation menus. My hard disk is recognized by LBA
mode.

So, after all these things I have all inside but
I'm not able to reboot because I have no LILO installed nor a system disk to
boot from.

Can anyone help me??

I guess I will have tu put on some more information
in order to bring you a consistent clue, but at the moment my knowledge about
Linux is limited so when you were so kind to do so ask me whatever you find
necessary.

Thank you very much in
advance

Re: [newbie] writing lilo for choice to boot either linux or win98

1999-10-16 Thread Ernest N. Wilcox Jr.

This should not be too hard to do. Boot into Linux with a boot disk (I
hope you have one). Then check that your /etc/lilo.conf file has a
section to boot either system using the text editor of your choice (if
you did a reinstall of Win98, it should be good to go). Next from a
command line run lilo, and it will install the boot loader again for
you. Then re boot, and you should be able to do the dual boot thing
again. If I am mistaken on this, maybe someone else with greater
experience than I can give you better advice.

Re: [newbie] Office Suites

1999-10-16 Thread Ernest N. Wilcox Jr.

I like it. It does the job. It is big though, and the decision on
installing it depends on what your needs are. If you just want a word
processor, StarOffice is overkill, but if you need a complete office
suite, designed to compete with the one from Redmond, then this baby
is for you. It has everything you could need. Just search
"StarOffice" in your web browser to locate the website. From there
you can check out the features, system requirements and even
do a download or order the CD if you want to. Note that the download
is big!! Some 67Meg.!! So unless you have a cable connection, or an
ADSL connection, or other fast hookup, be ready to spend maybe 6 Hrs.
on the download (with a 56K modem). On the other hand, if the above
is overkill for your needs, you may want to try WordPerfect 8 for
Linux. This is a fine word processor, and has many bells and
whistles. Personally, I used to use the 5.1 version for DOS way back
when, and I liked it a lot (showing my age here). It is not nearly as
big a download as StarOffice, and will provide you with most of what
you will need for home use. The only real drawback is that if you
want to use it for commercial purposes, you will have to buy the
retail version. So, if you need something for home or school use,
WordPerfect 8 is a good choice. If your need is for business
purposes, then I personally would recomend the StarOffice suit, both
for it's completeness, and the fact that it is free for both personal
use and commercial use. Please note that the above are my personal
opinions, and I am not an authority on the subject, as I am only
mildly familiar with either one. I am still learning to use both of
them (WordPerfect 8 is easier for me because of my familiarity with
v5.1). I do hope that this is of some small assistance,

I admire the effort put into StarOffice but I feel it is still quite
kludgy. At the same time, we must not forget that pgms like M$Office,
WP, etc have gone thru' millenniums of evolution compared to
StarOffice. It's biggest selling point (I know it's free) is perhaps
its 'ability' to translate M$Office documents. That's what I use it for
mostly, although it has a habit of screwing up even your simplest
formatting of Excel and Powerpoint.
Speaking of which, what is the difference (read, fixes and improvement)
of Sun's 5.1a over 5.1?

No flame here; just my thanks for sharing your insights with us! I haven't
tried most of these, but I have tried and used SO, Maxwell, and Applixware,

Almost a year ago I downloaded the Win version of SO 5.0, knowing I'd soon be

when dealing with others from the M$ worl using office. Student e-mail eassys
to me as Word attachments. From my linux box, I open the essay in SO, make my

I find PowerPoint easier to use than SO presentation program, but other than

Re: [newbie] Changing Graphics and setup programs

1999-10-16 Thread Ernest N. Wilcox Jr.

The trouble with this is that the document you refer to is produced
by Macmillan, not RedHat or Mandrake. While I think that the release
is truely Linux-Mandrake 6.0, I take anything provided by Macmillan
with a grain of salt, since they are not producing the software
themselves, only publishing (distributing) it for Mandrake. I am only
a user like everyone else here, and I do not know for sure if
Mandrake is based on RedHat, or if it is "100%" compatible with
RedHat or not. However, if installing something from the RedHat
distribution has caused problems for someone, then it would appear
that they are so compatible, and that caution would be in order. As
for the installer, RedHat has produced a fine piece of work there,
and why would anyone want to re-invent the wheel when the wheel
that is currently available is just fine. Maybe someone from the
Mandrake team will help us to clear up this confusion?

IMHO Start Office is great esp. the new version from Sun 5.1a. The
problem I have with it is the PostScript printing. I can get decent
output from Word Perfect but most of these home printers don't seem to
work well with Star Office. But the programs themselves are good but a
bit slow. They also need a lot of memory. Maybe the KOffice suite
and Corel Suite may be better when they come out but for now Star
Office is good.

Re: [newbie] StarOffice net installation

1999-10-16 Thread Ernest N. Wilcox Jr.

I think that you will have to do the client side instalation for each
machine on which you want to have StarOffice available. At least it
makes sense to me. I think that maybe the net install onto the NFS
system is intended as a "server" while the instalation on each client
machine would of course be the client application. I know this is
probably not much help, but I only have one machine, so I do not have
any experience with the network installation for StarOffice. Good
luck, maybe someone else can be of greater assistance,

mentioned that the installation media might be the culprit.

I've been following this thread to see if it would solve my problems as
well. I have an IBM 10.1 Gb HDD, and in order to see anything above
8.4Gb, I had to download and install this pgm called Ontrack Manager.
Am I right in presuming that Ontrack does the same thing as EZ-Drive?
I have been having problems getting Linux to install on this disk.
John, am I getting you right by saying that if I put Linux (and only
Linux) on it, the entire 10Gb (minus partitioning overheads) would be
seen?

I have two more 3.2Gb HD set up as pri slave and sec master. Would I
have a problem then to install a small Win partition on the pri slave?
Would Win choke on not being in the pri master disk? The Win partition
would only be for some 'legacy' programs like the IBM Ink Manager for my

Re: [newbie] Office Suites

1999-10-16 Thread Civileme

Well well well, when I need to hire someone to open a can of worms, I know where to
look.

As with all things, it depends on what you want to use it for.

My point of view?

As a system administrator migrating people from Windows and ClarisWorks and
Microsoft Office, I GOTTA HAVE IT. And I hope we see 5.2 with Office 2000 filters
REALLY SOON or we may need to brand Sun Microsystems dumber than they look.
StarOffice won't even do the job of poisoning Office sales if it does not achieve
parity with files quickly.

Yeah, I know, Microsoft added some trivial and unnecessary features threw in at
least as many new bugs as fixes and is selling an upgrade everybody is buying. But
I have to have file translation capability.

And there is no StarOffice equivalent of Microsoft Publisher. A rinky-dink package
with a new skin and a crippled version of Word dressed up with clip art and it
seems to be inordinately popular. When I show people how StarWriter can do the
same job, it falls mostly on deaf ears.

OK what about Applix?

At least as good as StarOffice, with a much better manual. But the filters stink.
If it were just a matter of using something, I'd choose it quickly.

Siag Office?

Now don't laugh! Pathetic Writer is every bit as good as AbiWord and a whole lot
better at handling memory than Maxwell. And it is available in i586 type
binaries. I like it. Scheme in a Grid is as good as any other spreadsheet.
Filtering (the art of reading alien files) could be improved, but overall it is
surprisingly good.

KOffice?

I haven't seen the plans for filtering. But toss Adobe Pagemaker in favor of Kword
and KLyX. The specialties and embeds are there. This will be THE Killer app of
office suites if ever they get it done. Mandrakesoft is helping see that happen,
BTW. Try a snapshot if you like, but figure a good 6 to 8 hours compile time and
don't use a MediaGX processor to do it, for it will terminate on a compiler error
for some undiscovered buggy reason associated with the MediaGX.

Andrew???

Well, I can't sell this one to anyone, but it does as well in 20Mb as StarOffice
does in 70. Unfortunately the missing item is in the "kiss-of-death" category.
Whoever heard of an OfficeSuite that could check syntax in programs? And where you
could define your own classes? Some would say it is an OO Programming language
masquerading as a suite. Others would say it is an Office Suite with an interface
only a programmer would enjoy.
As a Python addict, I find it fairly easy to use and VERY powerful, but I have
to know StarOffice for my users; so I don't get to use it much. If you want to do
great things and have a lot of time to learn, here you go. If you cannot use it
enough to keep your skills current, don't use it.

Abisuite?

I saw it on the distribution disk for 6.1 but haven't used it. Check it out. It
might be everything you need.

So

General purpose--
HTML, WP, Spreadsheet, Image, etc.--Applix or StarOffice

WP (Short to medium documents) WordPerfect

WP (Quick n Dirty) AbiWord, Pathetic Writer, Maxwell

Special Purpose--

WP (Publishing and longer documents) KLyX or Emacs/TeX

Pizazz/Panache--

KOffice

Crude Power--

Andrew

Imagery--

GIMP

Now I would like to go on discussing all of these for a long time, but I have to
duck the flames from those whose favorites didn't get a rave review. In the final
analysis, a lot of it is taste, and "De Gustibus non est Disputandem" as they say.
