Re: [newbie] mirroring

If you download the raidtool090 latest software RAID package, it won't work. Someone
from mailing archive said that you have to patch it by raid145. But I still cannot
figure out the file format of raid145, it is neither a rpm nor tar (after gzip -d)
file. Anyone comment?

The raidtools package should contain what you need.

Hmmm
Just ran Xconfigurator & xf86config - xf86config gave me a
bigtime crash as I didn't comment out the 16 bit VGA modes
(HEE..) Xconfigurator *did* give me an option to custom
configure my monitor (right at the top of the list),but
Steve is right, it only gives you 4 options for hsync.
works o.k. for me. Just don't choose an option higher than
your monitor can do.
I'd reccommend using Xconfigurator, rather than xf86config,
& SiS chipsets can't use XF86Setup

[newbie] plugger's not cooperating

1999-11-02 Thread David van Balen

I tried to install plugger under netscape 4.61 (libc5 version of both).
I first tried the rpm and it appeared to install fine but then whenever I
went to a page with audio files, netscape would die.
Since then I have uninstalled the rpm, installed the tarball by placing
the plugger.so and pluggerrc files in the right places (specified in the
README file), upgraded to netscape 4.7 and reinstalled plugger, first in
my user's home dir and then globally and netscape still dies. This is even
worse than not having any sound.
I got plugger working fine when I had LM6.0, I'm not sure what, if
anything, I did then that I'm not doing now. Any ideas?

I've had the exact same results with plugger.. Obviously I'm ( we're )
doing something
wrong.. I since marked it as a no no.. If anyone has any info as to
how to make this work
without crashing netscape it would be greatly appreciated.. I find it
easier and better just to
go into netscape and edit the apps to call a program to handle the
task..

I was just curious mostly about what it would require to go isp-less. So it's
basically out of the question for the average user looking to host his own site.
I may have found a way to do it, but with a twist. A site called myinternet.com
has a forwarding service that allows one to host a web site at home. I haven't
checked the detail yet, though.

Unfortunately, the 3C509b is an ISA card and the genius is a PCI. My MB
has only 2 ISA slots, one used by the soundcard, and the other by the
ethernet card so I can't switch. The setup works with (yuk) win2000 and
win98, so I don't think IRQ conflicts are the problem. My next move will
be to try modprobe 3c509 as suggested by another answer. Thanks for the
suggestion though, It increases the knowledge base.

We run Sybase at work for our in-house apps. But, if your application does not
need to do "fancy" transactions or stored procedures than MySQL is my choice. The

[newbie] ne2000 problems

1999-11-02 Thread Chuck Hartford

I am having problems getting my nic recognized by Linux. Upon start when
all the devices and whatnot are mounting I get a failed message beside
"Bringing up eth(0)" (or something like that). I've been to several
websites. One of them said not to put in any irq's or io addresses, while
another said that you should set the default irq/io to something other that
10/300 as everything gets autoprobed at that address. I've tried 5/320 as
well as leaving the fields blank. One solution seems to switching to a
Cabletron (yuck) card, at least it gets recognized by the o/s.

I'm running a P133, 64 mbs of ram, 1.2 gb hard drive Mandrake 6.0 (venus
edition).

As a side note when I had installed the Cabletron card my mouse failed and I
had X loading by default on startup. Couldn't even do a 3 point crash
(ctrl-alt-del) to shut the server down or stop X and get into text mode.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks Chuck

Nope, we already had THAT fight. Approximately 80% of the timestamps
utiltized by our ERP software takes the server-side notion of time. Time
cards, of course, are one of those types. We've had knock-down, drag-out
discussions about how "they punched in before the bell, but the computer
said they were late." So, we installed clock sync software to all of the
workstations. Now it's that they want to play with the clock (because it
will, for the most part, flip back to the correct time within 10 minutes).
Unfortunately, THAT PC isn't one of the clock sync clients.

I find it amusing that we got a shareware solution for the clock syncs (this
was before we discovered "net time /set /yes"). After a couple days, we
started having problem with the clients erroring out when started. Wrote a
nice email to the developer, included the full error message and asked if he
had any suggetsions... never heard a thing from him.

We use completely open source solutions for our web/email server. We needed
some additional functions from qmailadmin to deal with a quirky situation in
our operation. I wrote an inquiry to the qmailadmin author and had a patch
in my mailbox in around 45 minutes. God, I love Open Source!

[newbie] NMB Services.

1999-11-02 Thread Sean Armstrong

I finally got NMB services to boot [OK] when I start up. But, I still
can't see my computer on another NT box's netbios. I ran the nmbd -B
'server name' and got back the correct IP addres for my server. I also
ran nmbd -d 'server name' '*' and got back a slew of IP addresses from
the server. So, I believe that my Linux box is correctly communicating
with the NT server. The way I corrected the NMB [FAILS] at boot problem
was to add the servers' name and IP address to hosts and lmhosts files.
Also I left the hostname on netconf as localhost.localdomain and left
out the gateway address and netmask address. This left my netconf
almost the way it was when I first installed the Mandrake 6.1
distribution. If anyone knows how to fix my current problem I would be
most appreciative.

Thanx,

Thanks for the reply! So, KDE is a Window Manager, as is Enlightenment,
correct? So I don't need Enlightenment, correct? How can I get rid of it or
tell if it is indeed installed? I have the default installation of Mandrake,

Is rc.firewall executable? You might have to 'chmod 775 rc.firewall'

I didn't realize the delay on these posts were over an hour. Thanks in
advance to anyone who answers it in the next hour. But I did get
IP-Masquerading to work. But I have more newbie questions.

First, is there a way to send an ifconfig command to eth0 before Linux
tries
to initialize it upon bootup? It keeps hanging for a few minutes and
failing
and then I have to poke it with an ifconfig command that changes some
specs.
It would be nice if I could automate this.

Also, according to the IP-Masquerading FAQ, there's a file called
/etc/rc.d/rc.firewall that I had to make for it to work. But after I made
it, and upon rebooting, it didn't take effect. I had to type all the code
at
the command prompt line-by-line before my Masquerading worked. So my
question is, what is this directory? Are all these rc files supposed to
automatically run on every bootup? Why didn't mine run? Do I have to assign
each one somewhere?

Much thanks in advance!

Re: [newbie] Monitor and Video Card configuation problems...

1999-11-02 Thread Tuan Nguyen

Hello,
Thank you for all the response on my Monitor configuration problems. I got a lot of
response and would like to ask a couple more question.

1. I will try to run XF86Config or XF86Setup to try to configure my monitor setting
manually. However, I don't know how to run them. After I boot Linux from LILO boot,
a screen ask me to logon. Should I log on as root or user? After that, what do I
have to type in to run XF86Config or XF86Setup? At the Linux show, after the
installation, the computer reboot directly to window interface (Genome). How can I
set up like that?

2. In case I need to upgrade to X3.3.5, what do I need to download, what files? How
may I install it to my computer? I am so new to Unix/Linux that I don't understand
the Linux system.

Please help.

[newbie] KDE windows not refreshing

1999-11-02 Thread Gregg Carrier

Hello all,

I just installed Linux-Mandrake 6.1 Power Pack and managed to get my X
server configured. I am able to run startx and get into KDE. The
appearance of KDE is, to say the least, weird. It's pretty much
unusable. Here's whats wrong:

Click on any pop-up menu like the K menu and the menu is displayed as
word only, very difficult to read against the desktop background. In
other words, there's no solid window background against which one can
read the words. The same is true if I open the KDE Manager. I see the
frame of its window, the words in it vaguely, but the background of
the desktop shows through. I can't tell how to change a thing,
because I can't read anything. If I try to move windows around,
strange afterimages are left all over the place.

Another annoying effect is that submenus display right on top of the
main menu. For instance, I click the K menu, and marginally readable
selections pop up. I roll over a selection that has sub-selections,
and those are displayed right on top of the original menu without
repainting. The result is a jumble of characters that quickly becomes
unreadable. Layer upon layer of windows and menus can pile up creating
total gibberish. I tried opening the GIMP and the same situation
occured: no substance to its window, dewsktop shows through, and the
destop menu shows through, making the GIMP controls unusable.

Having looked at some screenshots on the Web, and determined that
everyone isn't getting these same terrible results, I still don't know
where to start solving this problem. Looking for a solution via KDE is
tough, since its unusable. If anyone has any ideas or has seen this
before, any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Are you using Mandrake 6.1?

I am really interested on installing Octuber Gnome on my system but I don't know if
it's a good idea to mix Redhat's and Mandrake's rpms.

Yes, it is one file manager in KDE (it seems to be the default one whenever
I click on a shortcut to a directory, which is why this problem annoys me so
much.
I am using it in KDE and have these problems. Incidentally, it also
behaves this way when accessed from Gnome.

Hi everybody.

I had that problem after install Mandrake 6.1 on several machines. I fixed it by
editing the file
/etc/csh.cshrc. In this file you will find the following:
limit coredumpsize 100

change it to:
limit coredumpsize unlimited

Thats worked to me.

Should be an install text file that tells you how to install the wine
package. Maybe:
./configure
make
make install
I'm not sure. But, the mandrake 6.1 distribution should come with the
wine rpm then all you have to do is install the rpm.(much easier) You
can use kpackage to do this.

it to my Win98 computer, so they're both able to ping each other with no
problem. I understand Linux is IP-Masq capable out-of-the-box, so is there
just some switch I have to set somewhere? Thanks!

[newbie] as of last posting, i got ip-masquerading to work... but...

1999-11-02 Thread Ronald Rand

I didn't realize the delay on these posts were over an hour.
Thanks in advance to anyone who answers it in the next hour. But I did get
IP-Masquerading to work. But I have more newbie questions.

First, is there a way to send an ifconfig command to eth0
before Linux tries to initialize it upon bootup? It keeps hanging for a few
minutes and failing and then I have to poke it with an ifconfig command
that changes some specs. It would be nice if I could automate
this.

Also, according to the IP-Masquerading FAQ, there's a
file called  /etc/rc.d/rc.firewall that I had to make
for it to work. But after I made it, and upon rebooting, it didn't take effect.
I had to type all the code at the command prompt line-by-line before my
Masquerading worked. So my question is, what is this directory? Are all these rc
files supposed to automatically run on every bootup? Why didn't mine run? Do I
have to assign each one somewhere?

Much thanks in advance!

I'm having the problems with the Davicom DM9102 PCI Ethernet Card.
How can I make my Mandrake 6.1 recognize this board? What should I do to

It is not supposed to have GNOME menus under KDE. I am running KDE. None of
the menus have KDE things on them. I don't have my system here but when I
pull down the first entry - Applications?? - it has things like gEDit and
all the GNOME things instead of the KDE things. The rest of it is
unaffected. The desktop is KDE. The task bar is KDE and has KDE things on
it. It's just the menus are screwed up and look like the menus you would get
if you logged into GNOME.

Here is the permission on my resolv.conf which does not work:
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root0 Nov 2 11:07 resolv.conf

I also checked the permission of the kppp link for "user", and all he can do
is read and execute, but not write. Even so, kppp keeps deleting the
content of resolv.conf as "user". I also notice that, while the connection
is open, the text inside resolv.conf is "search localdomain". Summing up:

As user, the contents of resolv.conf are:

nameserver x
nameserver y
before using kppp

search localdomain
during kppp usage (neither kmail nor netscape can find the server)

empty
after kppp usage

Any help would be appreciated,

/Gustavo.

  | Of course, I know about having to have a swap partition and I'm not having a
  | problem with that. It's only 128Mb.
  |
  | I deleted a 5GB partition and tried to make one 2 GB and
  | one 1.5 GB partition which only totals 3.5GB. That would leave 1.5GB for Linux
  | to use to reserve space for the bad spots you mention, wouldn't it?

Is there any un-partitioned space in your extended partition? I think you are
allowed four partitions in the primary space, one of which needs to be an
extended partition. If you want to use any non-booting partitions, they have
to be in the extended partition. When you removed the 5 Gig partition, it was
most likely in the primary partition area (outside the extended partition), so
when disk druid tried to write the second Linux (/home) partition, it could not
find any free (unpartitioned) space in the extended partition.

To change this situation without doing yet another re-install of Win98, you
could try fips to set up or resize your existing partitions, or if you have the
full version of PartitionMagic 4 (my personal preference), that will work well
too. I am not familiar with fips, since I use PartitionMagic here.
Unfortunately, the limited version of PartitionMagic that comes with the
Macmillan publication of L-M 6.1 will not produce more than one Linux
partition, and I do not know if it will re-size your DOS partitions in the
extended partition or not.

The advantage of fips is that it is free, and should be on your L-M CD.

Sorry I couldn't be more helpfull,

Ernie

  |
  | I don't think the Disk Druid (used during Mandrake installation) asked me
  | whether i wanted the partitions to be extended or primary. It just asks if I

This is assuming that you are using KDE as your desk top.

Check the "updates" icon's properties by right-clicking the icon, then
selecting "properties" in the pop-up dialog, then select the "execute" tab. In
the text box which contains the MandrakeUpdate command, edit it to look like
"kdesu -c MandrakeUpdate" (without the quotes). I did this and all goes well. I

I've played with KDE Ctrl, and all my KDE apps are OK, it's

That's how I have Windows, everything's a single clk.

Try leaving access to the system clock alone and inform them that their time cards
and payroll checks are tied into it. It's amazing how people leave things alone when
they believe any discrepancy in the date/time will effect their paychecks. (kind of
like installing a non-working smoke detectors in the bathrooms here at work to

Re: [newbie] Clean uninstall

1999-11-02 Thread Ernest N. Wilcox Jr.

Karen,

Unless I am mis-informed, when you remove a partition, all the information in
the partition is irrevocably lost - forever! To my knowlege, Linux does not put
any kind of information in the CMOS, or re-do the BIOS. If you remove the Linux
partition, then do the DOS fdisk /mbr, that should remove any trace of Linux.
Then reinstall to your hearts content. On the other hand, if the problems are
persistent, then you may have either a hardware problem, or some
incompatibility.

KFM, unless I am sorely misinformed is the KDE file manager (perhaps a typo?).
Since it is a KDE app, are you using it in KDE, or GNOME?

If you can give more concise information, perhaps someone on this list can
assist you. Please include hardware information too.

Sorry I could not be more helpfull,

Ernie

  |
  | c.) I boot to DOS with a disk and using "fdisk \mbr" to delete LILO
  | d.) I reinstall Linux
  |
  | All three methods fail to get rid of my problems. For ex., KDE freezes when I
  | use KFM to browse the /mnt directory. No other file managers (Gnome, KDE file

  | just KFM/KDE! When I click the /dev directory in KFM and look at its

  |
  | GAIM (AOL Instant Messenger clone) is retaining my contact list, when that

  | but just an indicator that I still have old information from previous
  | installations haunting which are likely the cause of my persistent
  | problems.
  |
  | Gnome's "Settings" on the panel is kaput. I can click Gnome Control Center and
  | get it running, but if I click anything else on the Panel under
  | Settings, (Multimedia, Peripherals, etc. ) nothing happens. That's just a
  | minor annoyance since I can use these from Gnome Control Center anyway, but
  | annoying nonetheless.
  |
  | During installation, I am never asked certain questions that I vaguely remember
  | being asked the very first time I installed Linux, such as how much RAM do I
  | have, etc. It seems to install as if it knows or thinks it's installing on top
  | of another installation of itself.
  |
  | What gets me is that after I tried Route #1(above), by filling up my hard drive,

Benjamin,

In KFM, right-click an open area of the KFM window, then in the pop-up menu move
the cursor to "New" (the top item), then select the "folder" item in the pop-out
menu.

1999-11-02 Thread Chip Wiegand

Thanks.
I have a static ip from my isp already. allowing port 80 access will be no
problem, as I am going to set up another pc just for the purpose of hosting my
web site, on the world side of the firewall, this way there will be little
chance of someone getting into my home lan. At least I think this will work.
What do you think?
Do I still need my isp for basic internet access, or is
there a way for me to get that access without the isp?

Yes, you are. There is an option like choose monitor from list or choose
from a range of
specified settings. at the bottom of the list of specified settings, there
is an option to enter
your own.

Mandrake 6.5 (Macmillan) is 6.1 which ships with X3.3.5
But do go to http://www.xfree86.org/3.3.5/SiS.html&; look at the
options you have to add to your config file etc. Sorry, I forgot
about that

Re: [newbie] Monitor and Video Card configuation problems...

1999-11-02 Thread Warren Doney

Have you tried Xconfigurator? XF86Config? (case sensitive
I may have got that wrong eg: xf86config)
N.B. XF86Setup will not work with SiS chips.
Type "SiS" in the search window at:
http://www.redhat.com this is a common prob & they are a
mine of imformation on it..
this is the third time I have answered a question on SiS chips
tonight. I am sick of it. I am going to write a HOWTO. Could anyone
with other imformation on the 6326 please mail/post to the list.
specificly, I am interested on how it goes with X3.3.5 as I have
heard it *might* be buggy (this could have been a reference to
X3.3.4 that the person made by mistake though...)

Try checking the icon's properties (right-click the icon, then select the
"properties" item in the pop-up menu), then look in the device tab. In my L-M
6.1 icons it reads /dev/hdxy (where x=disk letter, y=partition number). There
is also a folder under the /mnt folder for each partition which can be mounted.
I didn't (and still don't) know how to set up the partition mounting icons in
KDE under L-M 6.0, so I simply used the console window to mount partitions when
I needed to do so. After the first time I mounted a partition, I used the up
arrow to return to the command when I needed it again. However, in L=M 6.1 the
icons work as advertised (at least on my system).

Re: [newbie] executing programs

Don't know about the "sh", but try using the full qualified path to the
program. The folder in which the application is located may not be in the
system search path.

This is second reply. Read the post again. You may have to make the program
executable, unfortunately, I do not know how to do this, as I have never had
the need to do so - I am not a programmer as yet - maybe someday.

You're right, it doesn't. You'll need to edit /etc/X11/XF86Config after
running through Xconfigurator to get it "close". Just modify the HorizSync
and VertRefresh lines to read what your monitor manual shows.
