Re: [newbie] X-server

1999-11-16 Thread Ben

If your using 6.0 you can use the XBF server. I believe it is located in
the /apps folder on the cd. Just follow the instructions in the readme
file. Version 6.1 has support built in. It has several different i740
cards listed, as well as a generic agp and pci i740.

Good Luck

Hey guys, my question is: how
exactly do you uninstall Red Hat 6.1. I tried creating a win98 boot disk,
booting it and running fdisk /mbr but all that did was give win98 back control

said that logical drives were in existence. When I tried to delete this
logical drive, it said none were there. I tried again to delete the extended

[newbie] ISP connection only works for ROOT?

1999-11-16 Thread Josh McCaffrey

List,
After getting my modem to work under L-M 6.1 (which support told me
wouldn't work), I've discovered I can't find Kppp anymore (Murphy's
Law?). So, I'm using KWvDial in lieu. There seems to be no way to
change the AT commands, though I changed them under Linuxconf, but when
KWv dials up my ISP it uses an init string other than the one I want.
The wierdest thing is that my modem is only detected when I'm logged in
as root. Also, the FIND utility can't find KPPP, only KPPPLoad
(whatever that does). Anyhoo, the installation went fairly well, and
I've gotten everything setup except for the scanner which I havn't
fooled w/ yet. The modem took the most time, and I ended up disabling
plug n play and setting it up manually (gotta move my box somewhere more
accessible). This is a learning experience, right? Like I spent the
last 3 yrs fooling w/ windoze only to drop it like a hot potato. Good
thing this is my system, and everything I wiped out was mine, right?
Boy, this is fun ;)

Re: [newbie] smp questions

without a more info about your setup it is hard to say a whole lot. Do some
research on the motherboard you own, check out the manufacturer's specs and
see what processors they say they support (types and speeds). If you want to
do SMP buying a "cheap" motherboard is probably not a smart idea. Again, do
some research and find a board that others are reporting success with. Yes,
you want to have the same processors on the board (some even say that
getting processors from the same production batch give you better
performance). Check out http://www.tomshardware.com

The one where you select the printer after you tell it to print something,
before you click OK. (But never mind, I have my drivers in there now).

I have Star Office 5.1a and Mandrake 6.1.

So far I'm caught up with you. I found how to setup the printer and I have
my various drivers set in there (Curiously, the driver that's supposed to
print up to 1440dpi can't be changed in StarOffice's configuration to
anything past 300, but that's another issue). Anyway, after putting in the
drivers, Star Office still botches up envelopes by printing them at the
wrong orientation and then printing numerous pages of gobbledygook until I
turn the printer off and delete the queue.

Too bad, Star Office would be great for my needs if it weren't for this one
problem.

Thanks for any input you can give me!

thing at the test window, my mouse and keyboard where unresponsive... I
couldn't type or move my mouse. I had to wait for the timeout to expire. I

On reboot, my mouse and keyboard are unresponsive althought the kernel does
recognized my PS/2 mouse. My keyboard is responsive until the login prompt.

I unplugged my PS/2 mouse from the system then rebooted. I was then able to
login and browse the system, but X (KDM) still didn't start. I ran

Usually sound card drivers a loaded as modules. Modules are pieces of kernel
code that can be dynamically added or removed from the running kernel. If
you type the command 'lsmod', it will show you a list of the currently
loaded modules. Most likely you will see soundcore, soundlow, sound, sb, and
probably a few others. To unload the modules you use the command 'rmmod
' where is the name of the module that you want to unload
(get those from the lsmod). One thing to note is that some modules require
that other modules be loaded in order to be able to run. The dependencies
are listed on the right-hand side of the list. If you unload the three
modules I mentioned above, and all of the dependant modules, you will have
unloaded the existing soundcard drivers.

> 2) "remove all old soundcard
> references from /etc/conf.modules" (if this is the sound card i had during
> the install of linux do i have to perform this step, if so how?)

use an editor such as pico, emacs, vi, etc. to edit the file
/etc/conf.modules (you have to be root to do this). You will see lines that
define the parameters for the soundcard modules. Before you edit the file,
make a backup of it. Then go into the file and comment out the references to
the soundcard drivers that you already removed (in fact you might want to do
this first).

>3) "know if my kernel is compiled with version information?"

This one I'm not sure about as far as Linux Mandrake goes, but usually the
kernel is compiled with version information turned on. It refers to the
modules being marked with what version of the kernel source they were
compiled from.

Hope this helps

You can usually tell what type of file it is by using the command:

file

It will respond with it's type.

For beginners, system configuration files are in /etc. Files necessary
to boot the system are in /bin, /sbin, /lib, /boot, and /etc. System
administration files are in /sbin and /usr/sbin. Libraries are kept in
/usr/lib. The X Window System is stored in /usr/X11R6. Local software
installations typically go in /usr/local. Files that change frequently
get stored in /var. /tmp _used_ to be cleaned at each boot, but I'm not
sure if that's true anymore (and I'm not interested enough to check the
boot script). System daemons and other services are launched from
scripts within /etc/rc.d. /opt is typically used for large commercial
packages like StarOffice, etc.

Hope that brief rundown gives you a general idea of things...

If the files come in an .rpm package, you can use the command:

rpm -ql

to list the files contained in the package. If you find a file and
wonder what package it came from, you can use:

rpm -qf

To get a brief description of the package, use:

rpm -qi

There is a document called the Linux Filesystem Heirarchy which goes
into much more detail about the hows and whys of the filesystem layout.
If you ever get a free weekend and are still curious about it, do a web
search. It's a great document for understanding WHY things are placed
where they are. It's also a little frustrating to realize that the
thing is a couple years old and distributions STILL violate it's
suggestions.

Use lsmod to list the modules currently installed into the running
kernel. For each of them that looks like it refers to a soundcard, use:

Check /etc/conf.modules to see if there's any sound modules referenced
in there. If there are, just delete the lines and save the file.

Hope that helps!

[newbie] X-server

1999-11-16 Thread Cheeqa Kidman

Hi,
If you want to know who is the real beginner in Linux, well, that will be
me.

I've just installed Linux-Mandrake on my PC, but I can't set up the
X-server.
I think it caused by the false configuration of my Display card. My display
card is i740 and it is not listed when I run Xconfiguration.

Where can I find the right driver for my devices if they aren't listed in
Linux Configuration (especially Display Card)?
How can I install it if I find the file?
Can Linux do plug-and-play?

Thank's before...

What version of Star Office? I have 5.1 from Sun here, and 5.1 from

[newbie] Uninstalling Linux

1999-11-16 Thread Lionel Barrow

Hey guys, my question is: how
exactly do you uninstall Red Hat 6.1. I tried creating a win98 boot disk,
booting it and running fdisk /mbr but all that did was give win98 back control
of the booting sequence. I tried using fdisk to delete the partition but it said
that logical drives were in existence. When I tried to delete this logical
drive, it said none were there. I tried again to delete the extended partition
but still with no luck. How can I take Red Hat off completely. I have another 1
gig drive now that I want to put Mandrake 6.1 one on so I wanna blank my 3.2 gig

[newbie] Re: general info on where files are kept

1999-11-16 Thread Jaguar

Is there a HOWTO on the basic file types, and where certain types are located
ie: as in *.DOC is a document, *.INI is an initialization file located in the
Windows SUB-DIR.
I guess what I would like is to understand the why's/where's of the file
structure and naming convention's of Linux. Maybe knowing what is what will
allow me to get a better grip on Linux. As I see it, when I install a new
program, unless it creates a link TO the file in a menu, I have NO clue where
it ends up on the HD. Only using the FIND FILE can I try to narrow it down,
and even then I can't always find them...:(
Sorry to be long winded, but as a newbie, I am sure other's have similar
problems, and understanding them might make it easier on me/us.

I just installed L-M 6.1 on the same size disk. Mine was installed as a
primary slave to a smaller Windoze drive. You can rule out the "Disk is too
big theory".

You do need to make a /boot partition at the beginning of the drive. That
could be your problem. It sounds like you haven't fully settled into this
new machine yet. Can you rework it so Linux can be at the front of the drive
and Windoze on the rest? Also, I didn't make partitions before running
install, but just let Disk Druid do it in the install program. That worked
quite nicely.

Good luck!

How do I:
1) "unload all existing soundcard drivers, including soundcore?" (if this
step requires compiling the kernel, i am going to need really detailed
instructions because i would not even know where to begin :-) , if not,
what else do i have to do?)

2) "remove all old soundcard
references from /etc/conf.modules" (if this is the sound card i had during
the install of linux do i have to perform this step, if so how?) 3) "know
if my kernel is compiled with version information?"

It's true that USR doesn't exist as a separate company since they were
absorbed by 3Com, however, they still sell modems under the USR Brand name.
All external modems are serial modems. Their ISA internal modems are not
Winmodems unless labled such. I believe them may make ONE PCI modem that is
not a Winmodem, but am not sure on that one.

[newbie] connect/software issue?

1999-11-16 Thread PadLocke

This one was an enigma till I "fixed" it.
Mandrake dist. 6.0. Used kppp to dial into my ISP and all was well. The problem
was that I couldn't launce anything while I was connected. No email client,
browser, filemanager, terminal, nothing. Thing was though, that any app that
was running before I connected would run normally, unless it launched a seperate
thread. Then, of course, that thread wouldn't run.
My "fix"
I was installing a new kernel and messed up. Of course I didn't make a backup
of my working kernel. That would have been the smart thing to do right? Anyway.
I had to reinstall from my dist. CD and everything worked the way it was
supposed to work after that. I could launce whatever I wanted before and after
and during my connection to my ISP.

It wont unmount a drive at shutdown

I have Mandrake 6.1 Kernel 2.2.13-22mdk

I have a command to auto mount a drive to a win box
it is in the rc.local file and it is a basic smbmount command

It used to unmount with no problem when I shutdown using the ctl+alt+del
Now it hangs and doesn't unmount, I have to shut the system off.
The only changes I made were to the chown of that directory, I changed it
from root to my user name.I switched back the ownership after this
started but it still does it. If I manually unmount the drive it shuts down
ok.

  ..any ideas ???

a WinModem (I know...there are a couple exceptions to the

Even if your modem is NOT listed, it does not mean it's not

[newbie] bounced emails

1999-11-16 Thread John Aldrich

Hey, folks...
Let's get Mindspring's attention -- anytime you get a
"bounce" message from a server that ends with
"private.mspring.net" forward it on to
"[EMAIL PROTECTED]" with FULL headers.

They seem to be in denial that this is THEIR problem. It
appears that "[EMAIL PROTECTED]" has subscribed to
this list, but that Mindspring doesn't know that.
"racetrac.com" is a dial-up domain of Mindspring with "stor
& forward" email (it says so on the "host" line )

Unfortunately, apparently Mindspring isn't set up to
automatically route all incoming email for "racetrac.com"
(regardless of what's before the "@" symbol) to their
mailbox *sigh*

Let's make 'em sit up and take notice that it's NOT just
one or two people having problems!

[newbie] ADSL soon (I hope)

1999-11-16 Thread Eric Mings

I can almost taste it :-)

After months of waiting it appears that I will soon finally get adsl
through a local ISP provider (assuming Bell South actually shows up to do
their part). In anticipation I had my linux box built with dual ethernet
cards. Currently one card connects to my home network and I have
connected to the net via a 56k modem. Now instead I will have my other
ethernet card connnected to an adsl modem. Has anyone setup a system with
adsl connection to the net and might have some pointers about issues I
need to consider? For example, I think there is more than one type of
adsl modem available and I don't know if it makes a difference which one
I choose.

Mandrake (and probably RedHat) have a separate RPM for the
telnet SERVER and telnet CLIENT. Go get the Telnet SERVER
package.

For SSH, you need to add sshd to your /etc/rc.d/rc.local
Did you install the ssh CLIENT or the ssh SERVER? This also
comes in multiple "flavors" such as "ssh-client..."
"ssh-extras..." and "ssh-server..."

The vast majority of PCI 56k modems are "WinModems" and as
such are unuseable under Linux. If you want to be

Does anyone know what script / file I need to edit?

Re: [newbie] modem install

1999-11-16 Thread M Thompson

Take it back and get a USR fax/modem that's not labeled "PCI" or "winmodem."
Sorry to be so blunt, by I would rather let my CPU do other things than
run my modem.

I love my 3COM/USR V.Everything 56K Internal modem. It took me 5 minutes to
install it and make it work with LINUX. The 3COM manual has 1 page devoted
to LINUX. I followed the instructions, intalled the modem, and loaded KPPP
under LINUX. It worked first time...I just set KPPP to use /dev/ttsy1
(ttsy1 since I set the jumper on the modem to COM2). The V.Everything works
great with Win95OSR2, NT4, and LINUX.

Check out http://www.pricewatch.com or http://www.shopper.com for the best
prices out there.

If your patient, which I'm not, you could check out http://www.linmodems.org
and see if there is any progress on this topic.

I'd say that to cut down memory usage:
 - don't use Netscape Communicator 4.61, maybe just the barebones
   Netscape Navigator 4.7 though.
 - If you're using KDE:
- don't use backdrop pictures.
- use only two desktops
Following these two ideas I've made a P100 pretty usable with KDE, but
once I get the server working right I'll probably stop it booting into
X at bootup.

Re: [newbie] Linux and bios\harddrive settings (OT)

1999-11-16 Thread Larry Steiner

On a somewhat related note, I noticed in MD 6.0 udma support was default
but
in MD 6.1 you can recompile the kernel to make it so. This can be
checked by
running the hdparm utility as root to check the hard drive throughput.
Can
this be done in the initscripts as well. I don't know. But I never got
any
messages during boot up or shutdown because of it, just a slightly
slower
hard drive. I assume they did it because it caused some prolems with
some
older hard drives my making udma support default.
I have newer hardware so I use "auto" in bios and support udma in
kernel.

Check the "rejection" message, if it's a "undeliverable" message from
mindspring then it wasn't the list rejecting it, it's due to whatever
trouble mindspring is having and should be ignored... it is quite annoying

DNS, is it running? are the settings correct? is there a
named.conf.rpmsave sitting in /etc with the original settings in it.
Upgrades blow, in the future you should back up the important config
files to a floppy or separate /home partition and do a fresh install.
Remember you don't need to format and zap the files in the /home during
the install. This is a great way to do an upgrade without losing files.

[newbie] Install problem: it won't see my partitions

1999-11-16 Thread Warren Taylor

I want to be a Linux newbie, but I don't qualify yet because I can't even
install it.

I just bought a new computer with a Quantum Fireball 20.4 GB hard drive. The
included special version of Partition Magic in the 6.5 version of the
Mandrake-Linux seems to work fine; it builds a Linux partition and swap
partition on the tail end of my hard drive. They are primary partitions and
the main Linux partition is 3 GB in size. I intend to keep most of the drive
dedicated to the Microsux OS until I get a better idea of whether Linux will
meet my needs.

When the install program starts up, it gets to the part where it has me
choose Disk Drake or fdisk. When I choose either, it comes back with an
error saying it can't find any valid partitions on which to install Linux.

Someone told me it was because my hard drive was too big and that the Linux
partition (or a boot partition for Linux) needs to be below some address. I
don't really want to split up my Windows partition into two separate small
paritions with a Linux partition in the middle, and in any case, I see no
way to make Partition Magic put it somewhere other than the default place it
chose (the end of the disk).

Any help would be appreciated so that I can join the proud ranks of Linux
newbies.

Warren

Just a positive word here, yes it is possible to do it. But no, I don't know
how. My Kingston ethernet cards came with a DOS based program designed to
make DOS networking work, but I haven't felt the need to try it yet. It
looks similar to a 'drive mapping' kind of idea, but not quite, if you know

Let me know offline (home email in cc) if you don't get what you need, and
I'll give it a go, and tell you what happens.

Good luck!

How did you check before purchasing? A couple of others on the list have
claimed that this is a "confirmed" winmodem. I hope you're right and they're
wrong.
Anyway, you can give this a try:
The modem can probably be configured using kppp (assuming you're using
KDE). It's on the menu. You'll need to know which COM port it's on. If it's
on COM2, for example, choose ttyS1; COM1, choose ttyS0. Then query the modem
to see if it's being recognized.
If you're not using KDE and do not have kppp, I'm not sure. Perhpas someone
else will jump in.

[newbie] DOWNgrading To Mandrake 6.0

1999-11-16 Thread BryanMoorehead

Sorry if you get this twice. I sent it about 5 hours ago and still it hasn't
shown up.
Also, In that 5 hours, I checked the archive and found someone with the same
problem

Hi Folks,

Well I couldn't leave well enough alone. I listened to the voices and
upgraded from 6.0 to 6.1 the other night. Everything seems fine except for
my "Web Server" Before the upgrade, anybody browsing to kband.net saw the
contents of /home/httpd/html. Apparently the Apache upgrade points somewhere
else? Anyone know where it points to now? I tried changing the ServerRoot
line in /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf BACK to /home/httpd/html to no avail.
Browse to www.kband.net and you will get "The Requested URL / Was Not Found On
This Server".

Also, the OOS (Other Operating Systems) using my Linux box for a proxy now
cannot browse the 'net. They resolve the address, but are unable to pull up the
site. Perhaps ipchains is screwed up now?

Obvioulsy some files were changed during the upgrade as I see files now such at
httpd.conf.rpmsave and rc.local.rpmsave.

Is it possible to "back out", or should I plow ahead with my site down until I
am miracled the solution? (Or one of you Gurus slaps me silly and points me in
the right direction?)

Forgive the rambling, but its Monday morning, and the coffee hasn't kicked in
yet.

Thanks,
Bryan

I just checked US Robotics site for my modem and in
fact it will work under DOS, so I assume that it
should work in Linux. I just don't know how to
configure it...

No it's not a winmodem... I checked for that before I
bought it...
How is modem configuration done under Linux, and I
will try if it works...

Thanks

[newbie] Samba & Perl

1999-11-16 Thread martin

Hi,

This may be more of a question for the expert list, but i'll try here
first.

I have got samba up and running from the Mandrake CD no problem so my
PC can be seen by my laptop's Win98 network neighbourhood.

At work i am working on some web pages that use perl scripts to
manipulate files on the server (basically a remote control of a
production environment). I would like to continue developing these
pages using my home setup (ie an apache server). I can get the perl
scripts to execute with (relatively) little effort - (don't ask me why
apache doesn't recognise the the '#!' directive at the start of the
script until the files have been manually copied to a new file line by
line).

My question is that the perl scripts use UNC naming conventions to
access the files ie '\\ntaonline1\prodin\*". Not surprisingly when run
on a linux box they fail (presumably the linux box doesn't understand
UNC names). Can samba help me with this ? If so how - if at all - can
it be integrated into apache so that the perl scripts can return the
correct results ?

I have checked out the samba documentation, but can only find info on
using the smbclient tool interactively (which incidentaly works well).
Lot's of questions, can anyone help with any answers ??

Thanks in advance,
Martin.

If this PCI Modem is a winmodem (as MOST PCI modems are), then you more than
likely will NOT be able to configure it to work atthe present under Linux.

Hope I'm wrong about this being a winmodem. Check the box and see if it
requires Win 9x.

[newbie] PRINTING

1999-11-16 Thread Dennis Robertson

Hello All,

Now that I have got my printer working thanks to Steve I would like to
know how to stop it. In Windows you can abort print jobs while they are
running, but can this be done in Mandrake 6.1?

I have been into printer queue while print jobs are running (as root)
and tried to remove the job from the queue. I am asked are you sure?
and on responding yes nothing happens and printing continues. I have
switched the printer off but it cranks up the same job when restarted.

I am very pleased to be able to print but does anyone know how to stop
it mid-process?

Thanks.

Steve,

Yes, I usually notice the problem while I am using Netscape on the
internet. It happened just a while ago while I was on the net and I
noticed that none of the items in K would work either. I found I did
not have to restart X but simply log out and in again to get the system
working. Very annoying though.

On another occasion earlier today I had disconnected, had started to
print some Netscape pages and wanted to stop printing. I found I could
not open Printer Queue and then noted most icons had stopped working. I
was not connected then. But on each occasion I am fairly sure I had
either been connected or was connected just before; ie I had used kppp
to dial the internet shortly before. I hope I am right in thinking you
have an idea of what is wrong.

Regards.
