[newbie] "Print" shell script
Dear friends: May I ask for your help in writing a very simple shell script for the Print function. I have been using a lovely text editor called Cooledit for quite some time. It's a programmer's editor but can also be used for any editing. It is color coded so it's especially great when editing configuration files. The only thing that's missing from it is a Print function. I wrote to the author, who advised me to do the best I can or get someone's help in writing the shell script. I guess he didn't want to be bothered. Well, I clicked on Scripts, New Scripts, then was asked for for the name of the script, the menu item (no big deal here -- just typed "Print" in both cases), then hotkey (typed P). Now the biggie: I am asked for the argument. First, I don't know whether I can use Print as user or as root. Secondly, I tried to put "lpr" in it and then "etc/rc.d/init.d/start lp0". That didn't work, either. What argument would I use that would allow me to click on Print and have it print out any file I wish? And as user, if possible? Thanks so very much. Benjamin If you are at all interested in trying out Cooledit for yourself, you can get it from: http://www.netins.net/showcase/Comput-IT/cooledit/download.html (It's available as an rpm) Check the screenshots and you'll see why I like using it. If you do decide to use it, you need to know the following: After installing Cooledit, whenever you log into KDE, you see a message from Cooledit for another program called Coolicons. To get rid of this message, you need to go to /etc/X11/xinit. First, delete the pre-coolicon file, then open xinitrc and delete the section that has to do with coolicon. Thank you all so much. Find a howto on IP masquerading ( or the older style of IP Chains ). It's not hard.. There are possibly some other rinkydink ones out there, but as far as resource hungry goes, I could have sworn that Microsoft's Outlook consumed alot more resources than Netscape. Granted Microsoft Outlook IE 5.0 may be somewhat better Than Netscape, nothing hogs memory like Micro$haft legacy software. I'm not too sure about fax software, But I think KDE has an application for this also. Try visiting linux.tucows.com and search teir software archive for some. I'll bet you will find more apps than you can shake a stick at. This may solve your last question also. There are a ton of apps for Linux. Just start searching the web. You can find educational software for Chemists, mathematicians, biologists, astronmers, etc... I'm sure you'll have no trouble finding software you need. It is a Micro$haft publicty lie that there are no Linux apps out there. I could find thousands in just one day of searching the web. Plus, they are all FREE. Shopping: http://shopping.yahoo.com When you installed RedHat, did you try to manually set your partitions. If not, the installation software probably erased all that was on your harddrive and made it one big ext2 partition to install linux on. If this is the case, then format your harddrive and reinstall win98. Once you do that you can get software like partion magic and resisize you win98 partition, or you can reformat the harddrive and use fdisk to make a smaller FAT partion and reinstall win98 on that partition. Once you do this, reinstall linux, but go into custom and set up your partitions manually. Make sure you do not set the win98 partition to be formatted when the ext2 partitions are formatted. As for setting up your partions I suggest the following for the beginer: /boot = 15M swap = 100M / = whatever is left over. Now this is a very simple and not very secure setup. I suggest that you look over the Howtos on how to setup your partitions manually. And also the howtos on multiple OS systems (ie.. win98/linux). These can all be found online at the Linux Documentation Project. (LDP) and you may be able to find them on your distribution's CD. This will point you in the right direction. Also make sure that you lable your win 98 partition like /win98 or /mount/win98, something like that when you manually set your partitions, otherwise your linux won't read the win98 partition, and you'll have to go back and change some other files afterwards to get to work. Just a timesaver is all. As for your second problem, Redhat's 6.0 and up distributions have been somewhat unstable and need some fine tuning and tweaking by the individual before they stabilize. Hopefully RedHat will get over themselves and fix this in the future. Until then you will just have to go through each bug individually to get them fixed. Or, you can change to Mandrake 6.1 which is much more stable. Good Luck, SA -- Do you do Linux? :) Get your FREE @linuxstart.com email address at: http://www.linuxstart.com

This is puzzling. This could also be the result of some kind of virus. Because in several of my other mail accounts I have been getting duplicate emails from totally unrelated sources to the newbie list. However one common factor has been that they were either automated replies or from list servers. So could this be a new virus? One that targets list servers? But I would think that any server running on a unix or linux derivative box would be immune. Something else to ponder.

The reference id for your message is ABUSE#39157 Please quote the reference id in the subject line or the body of any replies you send to this or subsequent messages from us - for example if you need to send us further information having read the rest of this message. We always investigate any allegations of network abuse. However we can only deal with allegations that involve our network - ie they originated on or transited our network. We are generally unable to help with complaints relating to news or mail received by a Planet customer but sent from another network - these complaints should be taken directly to the originating network. Information on addresses and domains can be researched at our web site http://www.abuse.theplanet.net We often will *NOT* reply to abuse reports sent to us (other than this autoreply). This is generally because we are unable to release any useful information about an abuse incident, especially if there is a possibility of legal action being taken. If you need a reply make this clear in your message (or a follow up) to us. We cannot release details of our customers due to laws on privacy and computer data - even if those customers have been involved in network abuse. Mail & News Abuse - When reporting mail or news abuse it is imperative that you give us as much information as possible to allow us to effectively investigate the problem. This normally means that we need the *FULL* headers from emails or news postings. For mail the headers must contain all the "Received:" headers (these headers are normally multi-line - we need all the lines of all the headers), and for news we need the Path, Message-Id and Newsgroups headers. If you are complaining about multiple messages then please send us the headers from a representative set of the messages (for example at least the earliest and the latest allows us to get a good time frame to check within). Should your original message not give sufficient tracking information, then please can you reply to this message giving all the header information from the orignal messages. Other Network Abuse --- If you are reporting other network abuse we need to have details of what was happening, what IP addresses (addresses are better than names for this), and the *EXACT* time that things happened. When giving us time information - for example if you quote some log information - please tell us what time zone the times are for, and whether the time source is accurate and trusted (ideally systems logging time sensitive information should be synchronised using the network time protocol (NTP) to a good reference time source). Urgent Reports -- If you have a *VERY* urgent report of network abuse (this normally does not apply to mail or news, but does apply to other network abuse that is still in progress), then you can contact the 24 hour support team on +44 113 207 6207 [[end of autoreply]]
[newbie] Mandrake 6.1 (web iso version) and ADSL
A while back I had a Redhat 6.0 howto tutorial for cable modems and adsl modems and I've lost it, now I cant find it. Its not the everyday howto, although the author called it one. It contains a good bit of info on setting up DHCP (im using..ugh.. bellsouth.net for adsl) and routing with a gateway to win machines. Does anybody have any idea where I can find a similar one (and please dont give me the 'read each howto', I'm WAY to lazy for that :) 0-=chiphead

Familiarize yourself w/ all the RPMs in Kpackage, as well as the ones on the CD's. I found that I had alot of packages installed that I'd never use, and then some that I'd use, but didn't install. Compatlib would indicate a compatiblility library (feel free to correct me), so there's probably some package you need to install to satisfy some dependency. I just installed nearly everything, and then, later, uninstalled packages as I decided I wasn't going to use them. This is just my experience, as I'm in no way a "seasoned" linux user. Hi, i,ve seen many problems similar to mine. I've installed RedHat 6.0, and it erased Win98 FAT. I thought that was my fault, but i've seen many complains, not only in this news group about that thing. Did anyone know somyhing about it? On the other hand, i've got a problem with RedHat. It is extremely unestable. Sometimes the X crashes. The sreen gets full of vertical lines, and the system get hangs. Someone know what is happening? Thanks a lot, Jesus Angel __ Do You Yahoo!? In that case, the service you need, is ipchains (called ipfwd in kernel 2.0.x). I believe that there's a HOWTO in /usr/doc/HOWTO called IP-Chains-HOWTO or similar. Read through that. If you use a modem to dial to the Internet, you would need diald to (There's a howto on that too) and perhaps even a DNS server (of course there's a HOWTO on that too). Another goood source of information is stored in the man/info pages. You access these by typing 'man diald' as an example. Many of the config files in /etc have their own man file to. Try it. If there's no man page, it will let you know. info pages are another form of man pages that you access though a cammand called 'info' just add the command/filname after and it will get that page. /Jocke!

The NIC works fine as long as I don't try and run sndconfig. 2nd the update icon doesn't work in KDE. 3rd I used fips to make room for Linux (he has Windoze98 as well on the machine) and now, when he boots into win98 the desktop appears and then the computer freezes for about 4 minutes, then is OK. In the control panel the Linux partition is visible and If I click on it, once again the computer freezes for about 4 mins. I believe that maybe Windoze98 is trying to access this partition at the end of it's boot and that is what is causing the freeze. Does anybody have any ideas what to do about it? You have to install telnet. On the cd rom, go into Mandrake/RMPS and look for the telnet-server rpm. If you log in as root and go into kde, you can just click on the rpm and then install it. ftp://ftp.cdrom.com /pub/linux/redhat/old-releases/redhat-6.0/i386/images/rescue.img For the rescue disk. Did you make a boot disk? If not, check the mandrake ftp site under the /images subdirectory for 6.1 for the boot disk. You need to run mkinitrd to make new scsi support and change the /etc/lilo.conf to point to it. Can you ping localhost (127.0.0.1)? Can you ping your eth0 card address? If you can, then try rebooting the Win system. I found that when I first setup the ethernet card, my win system had to be rebooted in order to see it. Don't know why, and don't have to do it anymore. [newbie] Passthrough PS Printing in WordPerfect
Recently I picked up Linux Unleashed from Sam's Club and noticed that it suggested using the "Passthrough Postscript" driver in WordPerfect 8 for linux thus relying on your RedHat print filters or whatever you use to print PS files under. Well since the WordPerfect driver I use for my Epson 640 is flakey at best (crashes regularly when printing graphics) I decided to try this. All works well with one small problem. It will not print in color. Looking at the set-up page for this driver in WordPerfect the "Print in Color" option is not available. This is confusing because I can print any PS file in Lyx or anything else in Technicolor splendor. Does this mean that WordPerfect has chosen to limit the passthrough driver or do I need to change something else ? Many of us use text-only mail readers, and the HTML makes it nearly impossible to read. LILO is the LInux LOader. That is the software can install the needed code in the MBR to allow you to make a choice of which OS you want to run. If you are using BootMagic, you will need lilo installed in the Linux partition. That is because lilo still needs to load the linux kernel when you boot Linux. I use LILO as my boot manager, so I always see it run at startup, however I think lilo works transparently when used only to load Linux and not as a boot manager. Re: [newbie] LILO
briefly and in depth? no. Yes, if you use bootmagic you still need lilo. But don't install it on the boot record of the *disk*. Install it in the Linux parition. If you use it like this, think of it more like io.sys and msdos.sys that DOS uses to boot. They are written to a specific place on a disk so they can start the boot process for the operating system. To make a bootable disk for DOS, you use the command sys a: or sys c: to write the system files to the diskette or hard disk, so the operating system can boot. Don't think of lilo in this use as another boot magic program. You're only going to use it to get linux going, so it's like sys x: for DOS. I used partition magic to resize old partitions and make two paritions for Linux first. You need a linux parition and a swap parition (both used only by linux). You can tell it that the new paritions are for Linux and a linux swap parition if you are using a recent version of parition magic like 5.x. Install boot magic in the boot disk partition, and configure it for DOS/Win and Linux (even tho it's not installed yet). You can do this from windows if you have the full version of parition magic. Install Linux to your new partition. When you get to the lilo part, don't install to the master boot record of the disk. Install to the Linux parition. You'll get a menu for operating systems to boot with lilo in this part, probably win95/98 and linux. You don't need the win95/98 one, since you get to win95/98 from boot magic. But you can just leave them as long as the linux parition has the * next to it as the default boot partition. If you can't boot once you have linux installed, the problem might be that you have to enable/disable LBA (linear?) in lilo. You'll get a screen with this option when installing lilo. I f you can't boot, try this option the other way. I have to have it enabled. If you need to reinstall lilo because you do a kernel upgrade someday, you have to edit the /etc/lilo.conf file to point to the correct files/names. (if you have scsi, you also have to run mkinitrd) For example, if you are installing from an older Mandrake 6.1 cd, there is a kernel upgrade that you can download and install. If you use the update icon in kde, it should install the new kernel for you. It gives you a little prompt that you have to edit lilo.conf manually. It's easy to do. Look at the /etc/lilo.conf file for the programs that it points to, such as vmlinuz-2.2.13-7mdk. If you look in your /boot directory, you should see vmlinuz-2.2.13-7mdk and vmlinuz-2.2.13-22mdk. The -22 version is the new one. Just change the name in /etc/lilo.conf and save it. Then just type lilo at the command prompt (running as root). It should look like it didn't *do* anything. You just get a prompt back. That's actually good, since you didn't get an error. It just takes a second to write it's little file out. In the /etc/lilo.conf file, it says where lilo should install itself. So, once lilo is installed correctly, it shouldn't overwrite boot magic. The /etc/lilo.conf file is for writing new lilo to your disk. It's not like a config.sys in DOS/Windows that is read when the system is booting. You must run the lilo (config) program for it to read your setup (/etc/lilo.conf) and put lilo (boot) on the disk to boot. You should make a linux boot disk *and* a rescue disk. The version of Mandrake cd I have doesn't have the rescue.img file on it. Look in the dosimages directory on the cd. If you have one, make the rescue disk. If you don't, download it in your windows system and make the disk. I don't know if the rescue.img file is on the Mandrake ftp site or not. I used a RedHat one from 6.0 and it works. There are lots of options for lilo. Usually you don't need to use them or worry about them. There are lilo HOWTOs you can get to from almost any of the linux sites on the web. This is a copy of my lilo.conf file. It's little and not as horrible as it all sounds. boot=/dev/hda2 # (where to write to) map=/boot/map install=/boot/boot.b prompt linear # (LBA?) timeout=50 image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.2.13-22mdk label=linux root=/dev/hda2 # (parition to boot) initrd=/boot/initrd-2.2.13-22mdk.img # (commented out if no scsi) read-only [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: > can someone briefly explain in depth about lilo? and if i use > bootmagic to dual boot my pc, do i still need to use lilo?

Re: [newbie] mandrake for 486

Where can I find this? | | Thanks, | jeff Hrmmm... I am using Mandrake 6.1 with kernel 2.2.13-7mdk on a 486-style AMD X5-133Mhz powered system. It is not exactly a i486 system, but it's close. The only thing I had to do to use Mandrake was to edit the rpmrc file so rpm would allow me to install updates and new rpm packages: FYI: the file is at /usr/lib/rpm/rpmrc and you edit the appropriate lines to look as the following: arch_compat: i486: i386 i586 arch_compat: osfmach3_i486: i386 osfmach3_i586 buildarch_compat: i486: i386 i586 when you see the rpmrc file, what to edit becomes obvious when armed with this information above. Mandrake with the KDE desktop does run a little slow on my old beast, but I am a patent man, and I think the trade off between convenience (I'm lazy!) and speed is well worth the slight amount of extra load up time. Mandrake may be optimized for the pentium machines, and if you are not using one, you will not be able to take advantage of the optimizations, but you should still be able to use Mandrake on the 486 machines. It will simply run a little slower that on the pentiums. Hope something in here has value, Ernie

I got it to work by typing just mc in the execute window and ticking the run in terminal option down the bottom. Re: [[newbie] LILO]
> can someone briefly explain in depth about lilo? and if i use bootmagic to dual boot my pc, do i still need to use lilo? === LILO is the LInus LOader. If you use BootMagic, or some other third party boot mechanism, I believe it launches LILO when you choose linux. When you install, you'll want to put LILO on your Root partition (hdax)[where x is some number - the number of your root partition]. If you don't use a third party boot program, put LILO in the MBR (hda).
