You do -NOT- need to mess with the kernel to set up IP-Masq on a stock
mandrake box. Read the IP-Masq how-to and follow the directions, but
don't worry about the kernel.

Re: [newbie] Networking question

1999-12-26 Thread HowyClark

First, you'll need to be able to compile the kernel so you need all of the
sources, compilers and so on loaded onto your box. If you didn't do this at
install time then you'll need to use rpm to get them (it's easier at install
time). There's a couple of "experiment" flags that need to be set in the
kernel so it's unlikely the kernel you're using will work. Give it a try
anyway.

There's a good web site that tells you all you nedto know about IP
Masquerading. It's http://members.home.net. Go to the
/ipmasq/ipmasq-HOWTO-1.79.html page and browse away. Section 3.3 tells you
what to set for compiling the kernel. Follow it exactly.

When setting the kernel options use "make xconfig" instead of "make config".
This brings up a GUI screen that makes it much easier to set the flags you
need (I learned this the hard way). It has help for just about every option
so you can understand what you're doing. At the end of the make process
instead of using "make" or "make zImage" I found I had to use "make bzImage"
to get a kernel small enough to load. There are plenty of HOWTOs for
building the kernel.

Use the same addresses that are used in the examples. They're not absolutely
necessary but will keep you from making a simple type-os and spending hours
trying to figure out what you did wrong. You can always change them later.

My problem is that I started with a "good" book which had one line in one of
the rc files wrong. It took two days to figure it out. When I did EVERYTHING
on this web site it worked perfectly.

This stuff's slicker than Willie. Lemme know how it works. I'm using it the
same way you'll be, with two network cards in the Linux box.

Regards,

Tom

First let me show my suspicion at someone who misspells their own name

Jokes aside, you need to set up your box for IP Masquerading. This includes
compiling the kernel and a few startup scripts. Been there, done that. It
ain't hard, just a hassle. This will let your Win98 box into the internet,
as mine does.

Lemme know if you wanna do the kernel thing.

If the SCANNER connects to the Paralell port, it's a Paralell
scanner. Period. No M$ tricks can make it into a SCSI scanner.
According to Microtek, the X6 comesx in three versions:
USB, EPP (Paralell) and SCSI. If your scanner came with a proprietary
card, then it's SCSI. If it plugs into your printer port it's
paralell. If it plugs into the USB port, it's probably not supported
yet. There is only "beta" support in current release versions of
Linux for USB. The URL for the info on the Scanmaker X6 is

[newbie] Grip - CD ripper/encoder - problem solved

1999-12-26 Thread Chip Rose.

I solved the problem with grip (version 2.9) - it was only recording 3/4
of the song and then quitting. It was using "cdda2wav" for the rip and
"lame" for the mp3 encoding - I changed the configuration of grip to use
"bladeenc", instead of "lame" (had to install bladeenc first); now it
rips and encodes the whole song easily. Guess it was just a lame
problem (heh).

But when i booted, lilo cannot find the new kernel (i
guess, since it
stoped after the prompt) I booted using bootdisk and
tried to change
lilo configuration to boot the new image file
'/boot/vmlinuz-2.2.13-22mdk'. But there was an eror
that won't accept
my root partition which in /dev/hda7. It says that
hda7 either invalid
or not linux partition. I dont understand because
before this (for
kernel-2.2.13-7mdk) the root partition is the same,
/dev/hda7 which is
linux partition, and that where my root partition is.

Even before this (when i still with
kernel-2.2.13-7mdk) when i tried to
change the label (in lilo, for boothing linux) it
won't accept it with
the same error.
What's the problem?

Run 'locate wine'. You'll get back a lot more than what I
copied below, and the '991114' part will likely reflect a different
date, but you should see at least:

/usr/X11R6/bin/wine<-- executable
/usr/X11R6/bin/wine-config
/usr/X11R6/bin/wine-strip
/usr/X11R6/man/man1/wine.1.bz2 <-- man
/usr/doc/wine-991114 <-- many docs

 So, what is the correct
> syntax to print a man page (lpr filename is obviously wrong)? I need a
> hard copy of this (and other) man pages to study.

Actually I believe the best source of info is the wine-howto on
your CD. Concentrate on the example wine.conf in the how-to as a
guide to editing your /etc/wine.conf. As a newbie myself, I'd say it
takes very little studying to get wine up and running and test your
first program:

cd /windows
wine sol.exe

After that it seems to me you need to rapidly elevate your Unix
and wine ability to that of super guru, to take on more challenging
Windows programs ;-)

1999-12-26 Thread root

Hi,

I have a question for when I log on. Once kppp logs on to my ISP, I
can't open the browser or ANY other program. This occurs as the root
user and as a normal user.

If I open a program BEFORE I log on, I can continue to use the program
normally. However, I can't open any program that wasn't aleady opened
before logging on.

Thanks,

Sam Walker

Alejandro,
I think this may be the best place
for you to get information:

They do a great job of maintaining
linux scanning info!

1999-12-26 Thread Sevatio Octavio

I'm in search of an email client that can receive and send multiple accounts. I've
seen ones with the ability to receive from
different accounts but they can only send from one.

Also, the source files are stored in the .rpm format just as are the binaries.
Windows will not recognize this file format - who'da guessed? - I think MS is
unwilling to recognize anything Linux. To look at them, you will need to
extract the contents from the .rpm's.

Sorry I'm unable to be more help,

I'm not 100% positive about 6.1, but 7.0 should recognise it.
Run this to find out.

Xconfigurator --help >& ~/delete.me
grep Diamond ~/delete.me
