I'm just trying to trim down the kernel cuz there's alot of stuff I won't be doing w/ my box any time soon and i'm seeing if I can get back a little memory. This will be my first time attempting this, but menuconfig makes this task much easier for a newbie that doesn't understand alot of these options. I figure that if I trim the kernel only to support things I'm gonna use soon, that my box might run a bit faster. I mean, sh**, I don't really have any use for much of what Linux has to offer, but it still hasn't crashed yet and that's reason enough for me to be using it. Then I can sound cool talking about building my first kernel ;-) In time I'll be doing more w/ this brilliant system as I learn more about it. Seriously, menuconfig is s easy to understand and it has HELP for most of the options. I can hardly wait to to finish the kernel, but now, I need some sleep... [newbie] Network interfaces not set at boot time
Hi I just installed a network card in my computer. Everything works fine if I run the "ifconfig" commands manually to activate the loopback and the eth0 interfaces. I suppose that these interfaces should be activated during the boot process but I did not find any way to do it. Thank you for your help Frédéric
[newbie] GNOME Panel
Im new to using GNOME, but i knew on previous versions, and on redhat 6.1, when u minimize apps they went down to the "start" bar type thing. Well when im using gnome w/ mandrake 6.1, theres no place to minimize them. How do i enable this on the tool bar? Thanks in advance!
Re: [newbie] /boot/System.map
Look in your /boot directory. THere should be a System/map file which is linked to your new kernel like: System.map -> System.map-2.1.132smp-mdk Or is it still linking to your old kernel? Re: [newbie] Root Password Problem
Well, I ran out with it at 350 Mb and that was recommended in a book I have on the topic of partition sizes. Matter of fact, most of the other partitions were either empty or close to it. Somewhere it's putting everything in / I do believe. Either way, I won't run out for a while now. Recommendation was to check the log files for their sizes. Too late since I've already repartitioned and installed. but I noted the current size and will check the log files soon to see what they're up to. Maybe they grew realy big? It's all on my "throw away" box now anyway. If I destroy it I just rebuild it and start over. It's my learning tool and I don't have to mess with other OS's on it. (I don't throw old parts away.) I made the following this time: / = 1.2 Gb /usr = 400 Mb /home and swap files on the rest of the drive space available. Drives include hda = 1.2 Gb hdb = 400 Mb hdc = 212 Mb Should be enough there to do something with. B. B. R_Yeo wrote: > On Tue, 28 Dec 1999, Toyswins wrote: > > I think I discovered the problem. [newbie] is smp and nfs possible with 2.2.13-7mdk?
Hi, Is anyone out there running an smp kernel 2.2.13-7mdk with nfs support? I've been trying to get this configuration for three days now, but I'm completely unable to compile a bootable smp 2.2.13-7mdk kernel. When booting, either from floppy or lilo, it hangs at "Finding module dependencies". I can compile a bootable 2.2.13 kernel using the source from www.kernel.org, but this gives me no nfs support. What can I do? The system was running fine under Mandrake 5.3 kernel 2.2.9. This upgrade from 5.3 to 6.1 has practically shut us down for the last three days. Thanks, Hidong

[newbie] Installing after installing
I was wondering how it is possible to install applications from the CD after installing Linux? I installed Mandrake 6.1 and chose not to install things like Gnome and Samba. Now I would like to install these packages, do I have to go back to the CD and run install from there, or is there a command line (Yes I'm an old MS-Dos user...:-) ) commmand to use that installs application packages? Re: [Re: [newbie] Mouse freaks]
By default COMs 1 and 3 share IRQ4, and COMs 2 and 4 share IRQ3...it's possible if your using a Serial Mouse on COM 1 and a modem on COM 3 that there is an IRQ conflict. I would recommend either changing Modem to a diff. IRQ (eg: 9 or 10), or Modem to a diff COM (eg: COM 2/IRQ3). just my 0.02 worth...:) HTH Jaguar Dennis <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > On Sun, 26 Dec 1999 21:27:03 -0500, you wrote: > > >On Sun, 26 Dec 1999, G_REEPER wrote: > >> -BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- > >> Hash: SHA1 > >> > >> this is aproblem that has just started in the last few days. It appears I have the same problem no matter what the volume is set at for the modem. I turned on the debug log to watch and the sound up to listen once the problem arose. Still the same problem. The modem is a PCMCIA card. I wonder if that could be an issue. Although it is treated just like any other com port. I also tried changing from the /dev/modem to the /dev/tty1(I think that is what is what the help file mentioned doing) and that didn't change anything either. So I am kind of stumped at this point... I, myself being a newbie, had the same problem as you. I did however manage to get the silly thing to work by following the directions included with the readme that gets unzipped from the tarball. Note however that I found them to be a little confusing but by stumbling around I finally figured it out. Let's see if we can keep you from having the same problem. I'm going to assume you have very little knowledge (like myself) so forgive me if I go into too much detail, it's easier than assuming too much. NO RECOMPILING OF THE KERNEL SHOULD BE NEEDED, so don't panic. 8-) 1. log in as root ( I selected KDE as my login simply because I could easily open windows and move file around) 2. download the latest tarball from http://opensource.soundblaster.com to a temporary folder in your home 3. disconnect from the Internet (don't want to stay connected to long for security reasons) 4. from the KDE menu bar open your home directory and select the folder where you downloaded the tarball 5. with the cursor over the window press "CTRL + T" to open a terminal window (or open it from the file pull down menu) 6. in the new terminal window type "tar xvzf emu10k1.whatever.the.name.is". this should create a sub folder which will contain a whole bunch of files. the 2 important ones to you will be the readme and a "makefile", sorry I think that's the name. 7. tag the readme file and in there will be a whole lotta scary words like recompile and kernel - IGNORE THEM. just leave this window open so you can follow the directions. 8. using the "UP ARROW" buttons in your home window back out to the "root" directory and find the "/etc" folder and then the "/etc/conf.modules" file. right mouse click it and tag it. this should open an editor window and you can proceed screw things up from there (just kidding). 9. do a "save as" from the file pull down menu to give yourself a back up, something like old.conf.modules and close the window. Very important here. if you don't close the file after saving and editing it the computer will NOT recognize the saved information - this cost me several days of head banging trying to figure out what I did wrong. 10. refresh the folder window and select the "conf.modules" file. this shooed open the file in a new editor window. 11. the readme file tells you to remove the lines referring to "soundcore". go ahead and remove them (if you've got any, it is possible you may not if you haven't installed any other sound cards) then add the "alias -something-something- sound" line at the end of the file per the "readme" file. 12. next add the two lines referring to the "insmod -something-something" (can you tell I have a poor memory and am not sitting in front of my linux box 8-)). 13. save the file and CLOSE the editor, you're done with the scary part. 14. go back to your "home" directory window and press the home icon in the tool bar. next select the temp folder with the downloaded tarball file, then the "emu10k1" sub folder until you see the "readme" and "makefile" files again. now open a terminal window (CTRL + T). important, you must be in the sub folder when doing the next step. 15. now you're ready to compile the sound module a. type "make" b. type "make clean" c. type "make install" the "make install should take care of copying the "emu10k1.0" file the proper directory for you as instructed by the "readme" file. 16. YOU'RE DONE. I always logout and reboot but I'm certain there is a better way (like I said I'm new to this) when you log back on you should be able to get sound ( watch the startup listing to see if any modules fail ). IF YOU DON'T then there is one more step we need to take. 17. goto the sub folder that contained the "readme" and "makefile" and select the "makefile". this should open a new editor. 18. in the very beginning are a couple of line and I believe the third line contains a reference to "versions". it is currently set to "versions = n", change the "n" to a "y" and save the file and CLOSE it. rerun step 15 above. this should fix the problem. good luck and drop me a line if I left any thing out. -- Joseph S

[newbie] What am I missing?
I went to the MUO site, and found out what I needed to get to work. I've been running Bash, so all I needed was the kernel-headers-rpm, source, docs, binutils, ncurses-devel, and glibc-devel. Installed everything, but when I get to glibc-devel, it appears to install, but b4 it's done, I get the msg: ERROR: "execution of script failed". So when I look at the RPMs, it's there and it's installed, but is it installed completely? So, I logged out, logged back in, and as root, tried again to run "make menuconfig", but I still get the msg: "bash: make: command not found" I'll continue reading any of the README's in /usr/src/linux, but I think I'm almost there, I'm just missing something really simple. In "Running Linux", the 6 steps to building a Kernel are described as "quite painless", but I can't get past 1. Run make config (or menuconfig in my case). If someone could either tell me what I need to do or direct me to the proper documentation, i'd really appreciate it. Thanks! -Josh

[newbie] LILO won't boot from Hard Drive
I installed Mandrake over the Week End it was working fine and for different reasons I reinstalled it a couple of time. Now each time I reboot my machine, LILO doesn't start, it tells me disk is not ready, please insert diskette in drive A and press any keys I went to check my lilo.conf and added the linear option (ran it from sbin/lilo). It doesn't do any good. Any idea?
Re: [newbie] rescue.img
mkbootdisk only makes the boot disk. You have to make your own root (rescue) disk. Re: [newbie] sis5597
I am so happy, I finally fixed the darn sis server. I kinda cheated, I just went and rename XFCom_SiS to XF86_SVGA in the KDE while running in VGA mode. Thanks for the help, specially Jeanatte and John. Now for another question, how to I configure/install my modem to run on linux. Also when I start linux it gives me to failed messages, one for mounting file systems and the other for... other file systems. How do I fix this? One last thing, how do I make Windows boot first, can't I edit lilo? This is the last: what's a good site for linux learning... one that goes kinda like a book in your opinion. kxicq worked best for me, the others had dependancy probs. lets you register too IIRC I got it from http://www.freshmeat.net Warren. - Original Message - From: "John Aldrich" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Wednesday, December 29, 1999 4:04 AM Subject: Re: [newbie] ICQ reg. [newbie] PPP dialup hangs in the negotiation of connection
I just installed 6.1 Mandrake Linux on my laptop. Installation was smooth and very nice. I love the KDE environment. I am having a problem getting my dialup to work. I have a Global Village 56k modem. The kppp configuration is setup, when I tell it to connect it dials, the ISP answers there are two sets of tones very long and drawn out and hangs on the tones then the modem will finally disconnect and say no carrier. The ppp package is 2.3.8. Has anyone ran into this problem and what do I do to fix it? Do I need to get a new version of ppp or is it possibly a setting in the modem? I tried to modify the s11 register to speed up the connection, and this did increase the speed in which it dials, but it didn't seem to fix the tone negotiation of the connection. Thoughts? Re: [newbie] cannot boot
Go to mandrakeuser.org, then go to the kernel section. There is a page that wlks you through each step you need to do to get it to boot with the new kernel and tells you exactly what changes you need to make to lilo. Re: [newbie] X/Mandrake 6.1
I can see one problem already > Section "Pointer" > Protocol"PS/2" > Device "/dev/mouse" If this is a PS2 mouse, the device should be /dev/psaux Also, did you try picking a std ps2 mouse first. I had problems with the mouse under suse when I tried running the intelliwheel add-on, and the problem was similar to what you're experiencing. > Section "Keyboard" > Protocol"Standard" Try using it as a 104 key keyboard, I have a clone of the MS natural keyboard and it runs fine with this selected. On the TNT2 card- many of them will run fine if you tell it ok when the video setup tells you you have a Viper 770 (this depends on how closely the mfg stuck to the reference std established by nvidia). I have a Leadtek Winfast and this worked for me when trying to set the parameters manually didn't work. > Thanks in advance for your help, > Toby Walsh
