[newbie] Networking
Hey y'all, I've goofed up my computer. Just after installing Mdk 6.1 a few weeks ago, I went on my "uninstall rampage" to clean off all the stuff I will never use as a single home user. Uhh...I went too far! Talk about dumb, I somehow disabled all networking on this machine. My hostname is (none). That's not really a problem for me until I try to run something like printtool from the superuser console (when I'm logged in as user). When that happens, I get the "cannot connect to server" error. Well, now I've read that I need to set up my computer as a kind of "one machine network" and I won't get that error any more. So, I went into linuxconf, gave computer a name and domain, gave myself the IP address of 192.168.1.2, gave myself the loopback interface 127.0.0.1. Now, when I reboot, during the boot process I get the following: etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit domainname not found and this line in the checklist gets a "failed" At this point I'm really clueless. I'm not sure if I need to re-install something I had taken off, or if I've just got the configuration wrong. Any ideas and help would be greatly appreciated! But be aware, I'm a networking illiterate...I need it really basic! THANKS! Lance
Re: [newbie] X configure help PLEASE
Hi Terence, Thanks for this info, but I have done this. I have tried it so many times I should be an expert at it by now but none the less I fail everytime. It worked with md6.5 without a problem but with md7 I try and try and try but it wont work. So this time I saved the script that I get on the compiling part that it wont do. I also had luckily written down the script I got when I installed it on 6.5 being new to this and wanting to keep notes on what happens. After this error script I have the difference where things seem to fall over. If someone can make any sense as to why this is happening I would appreciate some help. I have the latest versions you get with mandrake 7 if anyone wants to ask since some of the errors in the script point to kernel version errors and no such files or directories. [newbie] mdk 7.0
I've just installed teh mdk 7.0. Everyhing went smooth, except that 1. I cannot open kde session, because of authentication failure reported from PAM_pwdb. I have only local (files) authentication. ?? 2. I set my user with tcsh shell, when I'm switching to bash simpli by typing >bash. I've got message :'bash: setenv: command not found' . It is due to eval `dircolors /etc/DIR_COLORS` from /etc/profile.d/color_ls.sh. dircolors wrongly use user's shell instead of the current running. Did I something wrong or does anybody else experience these problems/ Thanx for help Tomas

[newbie] NIC Problems.
I have been trying to determine the problem that is causing my LED on my NIC to drop as soon as my boot reaches Bringing up interface eth0 [ok} . My NIC is attached to my cable modem. I have a dual boot and I have connectivity through my cable modem in Win98. I am assuming that the LED dropping means there is no connectivity, and I can confirm this. So my first step is to determine WHY it is dropping. Perhaps someone out there has some ideas? Thanks, --x

[newbie] fsck prob
hello. big problem. i had to disconnect my system components for maintenance and when i reconnected them (with a new cpu), everything went haywire on the bootup. since then, i managed to get to the "unmounting old kernel" bit. then, it says that my linux partition (hda3) was not cleanly unmounted last time, check forced. fsck goes to work, then exits at a consistent 4.6% with error code 11. i then have the option to go in for maintenance, but my filesystem's now read-only, so i can't do a thing. please let me know what fsck is finding wrong and/or how to mount the filesystem to read-write. i can't change any config files without that, and i have a new cpu and mainboard on, so a recompile is in order. also, fyi, i replaced an isa sound card with a pci sound card and removed a hard drive (slave, not master) help, please... must run. my windows went nutty too and i only have a limited time left before it magically reboots itself. ~phil
[newbie] Lilo, Mandrake 7, and Windows 2k?
Hello. I have just reconfigured my system to make it more accessible by non-MS Operating systems. This is what I have. I have a 6.4 gig (C partition) drive on my primary Controller, a DVD as master on my Secondary, a Mitsumi CDR on slave on my secondary. I have a 9.1 gig on my promise Ultra66 card as master, and a 13.6 gig as slave to the 9.1 gig. I have an additional 8 gig hard drive as master on the secondary controller on my Promise card. As I have an ATI Rage Fury in my system (gotta love the hard-ware assisted DVD =), it took Mandrake 7 to get me serious about installing Linux (since it is the first version of Mandrake/Red hat I have seen with native support for the Fury, without resorting to messing with the SUSE drivers). I currently have Windows 98 on my C partition. Windows 2000 Is on my 9 gig hard drive. Here are my questions, 1) If I let linux install lilo. It should have two options it can boot to, right? Linux and DOS. If I let it boot to DOS, will it, in actuality, load the windows 2k boot loader? This would be ideal to me. Would the windows 2k boot loader survive having been moved by Lilo? 2) How do I get linux to recognize the drives on the Promise card, I was under the impression it had built in support for the Ultra66... 3) Is there a DVD player for linux? Thanks everyone!

RE: [newbie] How do I install Mandrake to a 2nd IDE hard drive?
You may already have the answer by now, but I'll put my fourpence worth in. When you boot/install from the Mandrake CD-ROM you will be given the option to configure the hard drive spaces. You will be able to select one of the two hard drives, hda or hdb, for the linux installation, just select the right one and use the automatic partitioning. Use that rpm name in the next command if you are # not on a RedHat system. rpm -Uvh /usr/src/redhat/RPMS/i386/I810Gtt*.i386.rpm 3.Edit the XF86Config file. Setup your XF86Config file. Use your favorite text editor to edit the file /etc/X11/XF86Config. You will need to be root to do this. You may want to do a 'man XF86Config' on your Linux box first to understand this file. Monitor Section Each Mode that you would like to use must be defined in the XF86Config file under the "Monitor" section. They are defined in one of the two following formats. Modeline "name" ... #or Mode ... EndMode This the most difficult part in my case because the monitor that I use is not in the database. If you can find your model in the database, you can ignore this step. 4.Device Section Add the following device section to your XF86Config file. There should be other similar device sections already in the file. You can add this to the file without changing other device sections. Section "Device" Identifier "i810" EndSection 5.Screen Section Add this screen section, you should remove any other "svga" screen sections that may be in this file. Do not remove the vga16 screen section, as it would be useful if you should ever need to fall back to vga mode. You must edit the Monitor line to reflect the Monitor you have. You can get this from another "Screen" section in this file, or from the "Monitor" section of the XF86Config file. Be careful not to specify modes that your Monitor cannot support; you could damage the Monitor. Section "Screen" Driver "svga" Device "i810" Monitor "Your_Monitor_Here" Subsection "Display" Depth 8 Modes "640x480" "800x600" "1024x768" "1152x864" "1280x1024" "1600x1200" ViewPort0 0 EndSubsection Subsection "Display" Depth 16 Modes "640x480" "800x600" "1024x768" "1152x864" "1280x1024" "1600x1200" ViewPort0 0 EndSubsection Subsection "Display" Depth 24 Modes "640x480" "800x600" "1024x768" "1152x864" "1280x1024" ViewPort0 0 EndSubsection EndSection 6.Set up the X server link. You will need to be root to do this. Since distributions set this up in differing manners, two methods have been included below. If neither of these work, you will need to contact your distribution to get more complete setup information. Case 1: /etc/X11/X exists. ls -l /etc/X11/X #If this does not exist use case 2. ln -sf /usr/X11R6/bin/XFCom_i810 /etc/X11/X Case 2: /usr/X11R6/bin/X exists AND points to your current X server. ls -l /usr/X11R6/bin/X #If this does not exist and case 1 didn't exist, contact #your distribution for assistance. ln -sf /usr/X11R6/bin/XFCom_i810 /usr/X11R6/bin/X 7.Start the X server. If you are already running X you will need to exit and start again. If you are set up to start X automatically then you will want to restart it by doing a "CTRL-ALT-Backspace". If X is not running you should start it with a command like this: startx -- -bpp 16 The "-bpp 16" tells the server to start in 16 bit depth. You could also use 8 or 24 bit depth. "CTRL-ALT-KeyPadPlus" and "CTRL-ALT-KeyPadMinus" will rotate through the resolutions available at the current color depth. [newbie] New install... Network problems
Hello, I have a problem that nothing I have seems to explain... I have a linux box running on an Asus P2B-S motherboard with 32 meg of memory, Celeron 300a, Diamond Stealth 2000 video card (Pci with standard S3 chipset.), 8 Gig hard drive, LinkSys 10/100 Network card and a CD rom. I have Linux Mandrake 6.1 installed on my machine and am trying to get it to work on my network. My original plans were to get this Linux box up and running as a Server for my 2 Win 98Se machines. Internet server as well. I recompiled the kernal (2.2.13) with the tulip driver included with the network card. I was able to get into the Linux Config utility from the KDE desktop. At the time It showed as one of four adaptors and said it was inactive. I told it to be active upon boot and to activate it at that time. I then later tried to get into it and it would no longer show it as one of the adaptors and only showed four adaptors. I did NOT add an IP address to the card at the time. (The other three "adaptor" slots are empty) The card is recognized when Linux first boots up and the eth0 shows up in my /Proc directory. What do I need to do to make it show up on my net work? I currently have my Win98se machines setup as peer to peer and see no reason to change that. I currently am using the Win98se internet sharing but I have to have my main win 98 machine online to use it. I would much rather get linux up and running full time and let it connect when necissary and then no longer use internet sharing with my win98Se machine. Eventually I expect to put my system on the net when I can do so cheaply. I am assuming the SAMBA utilities will get me there and I am sure its something real simple to setup. Without swimming through tons of man pages etc can someone tell me what I need to do to get it to recognize and be recognized on my network? I should also be able to use the net from my linux machine at the moment through my Win98se machine with internet sharing active shouldn't I? I may get my linux machine hooked up to my ISP tomorrow so I can try linking up that way as well. I also tried changing my HOSTNAME but I did it from within linux config and it doesnt seem to like it much. Says something about unknown name HOSTNAME = myhost.com. Just trying to change the name the machine has. Thanks for any help! I used to run Linux way back before it was a 1.0 version and it sure has come a long way. Eventually I expect to have numerous computers on my little network. (well one for every member of my family and extra hookups for those nights friends come over and wanna play games etc.) Thanks again. [EMAIL PROTECTED]

re: [newbie] Mandrake Install Problem
Question: What do you mean "drive D reserved for Linux"? Ideally the partition you are gonna install into should not be defined at all (Linux will do the partitioning for you). do you already have NT on drive e:? If it is necessary to keep the drive letter for the NT, then I believe you will have to use WinLinux or one of the others that will install on a FAT16 partition. [newbie] Stupid RAM troubles.
OK, i had MDK 6.1 on my syatem a week ago, and in my lilo.conf file i added append="mem=128M" to get all my 128M of RAM supported. But now with MDK 7, this does crap, and I still get 64Ms at boot. Running Netscape and other things all at once *deserve* all my RAM, but i just cant get it supported. What is one to do? How do i get ALL my RAM supported?? thanks ~Jerrud D.

re: [newbie] Logging in as root trough telnet
Dude ... that would leave a big hole in your security. Linux has deliberately blocked root from logging in remotely. If you really want to do it, then I think you can create a "super user" with access to everything (haven't tried it but told by a friend it can happen) OR: load VNC server on the server and VNC Client on your client and set up a virtual network connection (you will need IP addresses on the machines, it is IP based), that will allow you to operate your server via "remote control" for free Alan > ** Original Subject: [newbie] Logging in as root trough telnet > ** Original Sender: Cameron Kerr <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > ** Original Date: Tue, 08 Feb 2000 09:25:46 +1300 > ** Original Message follows... > > Why is it that I can telnet to my box as an unprivilidged user, but not as > root? > > Cameron Kerr - Computer Technician > Email: [EMAIL PROTECTED] > > Ph:474 3367 or 474 3800 if unavailable > > Cell: 021 2938869 > > > > >** - End Original Message --- ** >

Re: [newbie] CVS
In simple language, CVS is where you keep your code when lots of people are working on it at the same time. When one person makes changes to the code, he/she submits them to the cvs repository so everyone else can see them/modify them. Obviously, this helps open source by making it easier for many people, spread out over a large area to work together. BTW, cvs isn't the only thing out there, it's just the most popular in the open source community. [newbie] Problem with PCMCIA IDE CD drive?
Greetings all, I recently bought an HP Omnibook 800CT at a computer show for school, and am in the process of wiping it clean and installing Mandrake 7. Minor problem though... DrakeX doesn't seem to like my PCMCIA CD drive. Just as a quick background, I'm using the 7.02 ISO burned to a CD, along with the PCMCIA boot floppy (and I have the standard CDROM boot floppy if needed). The CD drive is a Toshiba 10x model something, standard IDE, connected to the laptop through a CitiROM PCMCIA IDE controller. Bootup through the install floppy and everything runs fine, and PCMCIA Services start up perfectly, as the CD drive gets power through the PCMCIA card (obviously Services need to be on to turn on the controller, and you get the idea...). But when I go to select CD and then IDE-CD, DrakeX states that it can't find the CD drive. Here is the output from the message tracker on console #4. I post just the part that I think is involved as I have dealt with Linux PCMCIA before, and for all reasons the card manager loads fine: <30> Feb 7 17:22:54 cardmgr[17]: executing: './ide start hdc' <30> Feb 7 17:22:54 cardmgr[17]: + cat: not found. <30> Feb 7 17:22:54 cardmgr[17]: + ./ide: ./MAKEDEV: not found <30> Feb 7 17:22:54 cardmgr[17]: + ./ide: /sbin/ide_info: not found <30> Feb 7 17:22:54 cardmgr[17]: + usage: ./ide [action] [device name] <30> Feb 7 17:22:54 cardmgr[17]: + actions: start check stop suspend resume <30> Feb 7 17:22:54 cardmgr[17]: start cmd exited with status 1 So there it is. Obviously, if I could somehow drop into a command line and manually run the command(s) by myself, things would be peachy. But there's no way to drop to a command line... Grr... Any ideas? Thanks! Since there are minor variations between the many different flavours of *nix boxes, M$ would be forced to distribute many versions of binaries, which would really be bad, since there would still be site-dependant configuration details that probably couldn't be changed. I will grant M$ this though, the interface of IE is (in my oppinion) far supperior to that of Netscape, and it's here Netscape should concentrate in order to maintain there market. For any Netscape developers out there, please get some of the following going 1) Smooth Scrolling 2) Hotkeys that work (Alt-O don't do a thing on Mandrake 6.0) 3) A more refined interface (like IE) Anything to keep the Microsofties away, after all, why did most of us convert from Windoze,... freedom -Original Message- From: David van Balen [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Tuesday, 8 February 2000 9:39am To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [newbie] what web browser do you all use? [newbie] RAM question and Time
Hi! I just installed Mandrake 7 and I noticed that it is only reading 64 Mb of my 224 Totyal RAMS I have. Is that an error that 7.0 has? Another thing that I am perplexed about is the fact that it is giving a qrong time. I live here in New Jersey and all my other OS' like redhat works fine with this machine except the Mandrake 7 which is giving a wrong time. Anyone know of this same problem? ~ John

Dale Morris wrote: > > I want to use exmh mail program, or maybe mutt. I have a cable modem > connection with DHCP and am running Mandrake 7.0. Can anyone tell me how > to configure Postfix? I think there are some good html docs available for postfix installed with Mandrake. Try looking in: /usr/doc/postfix-19991231/html/ While on the subject of postfix, I would like to point out the following: Postfix appears to be a "default" startup service. Personally, I had no idea what postfix was at the time so left well alone. Unfortunately, it wasn't long until I realised some of my e-mail wasn't getting delivered. The reason was that postfix was listening for my ISP to send mail via smtp, which they do by default. Because postfix wasn't configured properly, the mail was getting rejected and returned to the sender. The only mail I received was the stuff that I managed to download via pop3 before the smtpd kicked in! My point is this (sorry to waffle). If postfix is going to be enabled by default, it should be made clear what it is etc. on the kde desktop or some other obvious place. Better still, it should be disabled by default as I think most ppl now use pop3 to get their mail. (anyone from Mandrake care to comment on this?) Or maybe the main.cf file for postfix could be set up during the install routine for Mandrake, just like kppp is etc. Hopefully I'm not completely wrong about this, I'm still very much a newbie to Linux, although I've been on the 'net for several years and used to use smtp via a DOS port of a UNIX program called KAQ9. Re: [newbie] what web browser do you all use?
Yes, it's been discussed before, Netscape for Linux blows and there's not much else if you want to view flash or javascript content. I often end up using Windows to view web pages that make Netscape crash. As to alternatives that may be available in the future, there's Mozilla which is entering its first beta stage, there's Konqueror (for kde users) which should ship with kde2 and sun's hot java, along with quite a few others most of which don't have full java support... and, yes, there's supposed to be a port of IE in the works. However, I've heard rummors that IE isn't quite as good under *nix (currently solaris and hp-ux) as under windows which, frankly, doesn't surprise me. In short, you'll have to wait a bit if you want a decent Linux browser. Then after it starts up, go to "Xtns" in the menu bar, then hit the "Screen Shot" option. Then it'll give you a dialog box asking whether to get a single Window, or the whole screen. Make sure the package is installed; edit /etc/inetd.conf to make sure that the line starting with telnet is not commented out; restart inet with: /etc/rc.d/init.d/inet restart Good luck. -- Ronald

I imagine you could probably re-alias lsd to do whatever you wanted from within your local config or use your script and override it... which shouldn't cause any problems as far as I can see (though I can't always see very far :) DvB > > /Ian > __ > Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com > >

Re: [newbie] Config Problems
There's a module that you can load for your genius ethernet card. /lib/modules/2.2.13-7mdk/net/ne2k-pci.o I have a 2500II Genius pci card and it works fine. I Hope this module work for you too. Re: [newbie] telnet
You need to set it up from Rpm's. Mandrake doesn't install telnet daemon and any other things in a normal installation. Bye, Julian *** REPLY SEPARATOR *** On 2/4/00 at 8:52 AM Agi Subagio wrote: >How to activate telnet daemon in Linux Mandrake 6.1? > >Regards, >agi
