[newbie] Windows and Linux networking

2000-02-16 Thread sdos

Hello, I have isdn, and can connect with my Linux machine, I want to use my
Linux bow as a gateway/firewall/file server. Can anyone give me an idea on
how to do this. I know almost everything about windows networking, but I'm
new to connecting Unix/Linux and windows and new to using Linux as a gateway
through isdn. the 2 are linked up via ether, and I have connectivity.

Linux system specs:
external 3com isdn TA
10mbps network card
mandrake 7
all packages install (I think)

Win sys:
3com 905b 10/100
win98se and win2k pro retail

Re: [newbie] Modem jumper settings

2000-02-16 Thread Steve Leseman

Hi - I followed your instructions for getting Plug & Play to work for my
PnP USR modem, and everything went as you laidout, until I rebooted. In red
text, it roughly said, "don't know what to do with start dependent
functions no action taken can't parse isapnp.conf... around line 64
or priority acceptable". It was only on the screen for a brief amount of
time so I might not have it typed out exactly right, but it's close. Here's
what the section of the isapnp.conf file I modified looks like:

start dependent functions: priority acceptable
# logical device decodes 16 bit io address lines
minimum io base address 0x03e8
maximum io base address 0x03e8
# io base alignment 8 bytes
number of io addresses required: 8
(io (size 8) (base 0x03e8))
# IRQ 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 10, 11, 12, or 15.
IRQ 2
high true, edge sensitive interrupt (by default)
(int 0 (IRQ 2 (mode + E)))

and the line I added to the end of the rc.local file reads:

setserial dev/ttyS2 port 0x3e8 irq 2 spd_vhi autoconfig

I really appreciate any further help! I've been trying to get it working
for over 2 hours tonight alone! The strange thing about it though, is that
before my computer was upgraded the same modem worked fine in the same
version of Mandrake (6.0). But the shop installed it back in a different
slot, and now it is on COM 3 (it was COM 2 before). Thanks!!!

[newbie] Toshiba Configuration Problems (3 different things!!)

2000-02-16 Thread Dave Felice

I just put Mandrake 7.0 on a Toshiba Satellite 205CDS laptop and was
wondering how to configure a few things:

1) last year I had RedHat 5.2 on this machine and found configuration
parameters to get the system to allow an 800x600 display instead of 640x480.
I went into XF86Config and put everything as I had before and after
rebooting I can't get back into X Win because it doesn't seem to like its
new configureation.

2) Has anyone successfully gotten a SyQuest Spar-Q drive to run through the
parallel port with Mandrake? I have seen a little bit online about PARIDE,
but so far havn't seen enough...my main HD is only 774MB so getting an ectra
gig with Spar-Q would be nice.

3) I opened up "CD Player", popped in a CD, hit play, heard it spin, watched
the seconds go by and got NO sound and a message about it not being able to
find CDDB something or rather...any ideas??? I do get system beeps but
haven't heard anything else so far...

So if anyone can help with any of these problems, I would appreciate it.

Thanx in advance

[newbie] need help...

2000-02-16 Thread jean seberg

linux users,

i recently(couple weeks ago) installed linux on my 3gig pc along side win95.
everything was going good, but tonight i had a problem starting linux. (i
have bootmagic to switch the oses) the problem:

right after linconfig, before the x window loads...the screen starts flashing
on and off. i could not see any message or error due to the flashing, so i
don't know what's wrong with it...
i just proceeded with control, alt, delete to bootout.

i know it could be anything, but where and how can i find out the error(s)?
i haven't done anything differently this time except that i unplug a zip drive
this morning(that's not a probable cause right?)

thanks,

After turning on scsi emulation, your cdr will appear as a scsi device so
you need to mount it as such. I use /dev/sr0

Try "cdrecord -scanbus" as root. If that shows a burner attachted, edit
/etc/fstab and see where the line for your CD-R is trying to mount the device
from. It should probably be changed to /dev/scd0. If you've got 7.0 just try
to change the line dev=blah to "dev=/dev/scd0".

RE: [newbie] mandrake admintool ?

2000-02-16 Thread Paulus Hendarwan

Hi,
Oliver,

- For
installing bootloader, network (change hostname, IP address, etc), you can use
Linuxconf, type : linuxconf at command prompt
- For
installing software, you can use kpackage (software that packaged with RPM
format), type : kpackage at prompt.
- For
installing hardware, maybe you can use isapnptools or if you use Mandrake 7.0
use DrakConf.

May it
helps.

Hello Brent,
Look at your /etc/fstab
For my setup, I added the line:
/dev/hda4 /nt40 ntfs defaults 0 0

then I added the directory "nt40" to my "/" partition

There is proably a cmd to make all this work. However I had to do a
reboot and it was up.

I must admit to a few dumbfounded hours spent staring at the "man
fstab" to try to figure it out. Hopefully you're a quicker study.

Re: How about Roadrunner? Re: [newbie] Nic problem

When I installed Mandrake, I just set up the nic for dhcp and did not have
to worry about the DNS. Apparently, that is done dynamically by RR. Oh, I
did have to set the gateway. I got that from winipcfg in windows.

Now the question is whether or not RR in your area is set up the same way.
Also, if they require a log in, then you will have to locate some scripts to
do this. RR here stopped using the login just before I installed Linux.

Hope this helps,

Re: [newbie] core files absent???

2000-02-16 Thread Christian Geisler

Try the following: In a xterm type
'ulimit -c unlimited' (without quotes)
now a dying program should produce those core files.
there seems to be a restriction set for the maximum size of
core files a program can produce. with that line above, you
can change this.
ulimit is a bash-built-in command. You find more in
the manpage for bash
i had the same problem and this had done the trick

Cool so when they give you your netmasks and all that
where all in linuxconfig's network setup thingy
do you type where?

I'm wondering if the ISP gives the DNS numbers
the same name as what they are listed in
the network configger, or if its similar to
dialup or closer to like setting up a straight
network thingy like a lan connection to the
internet?

Sorry this is the first time I have ever configged
this kind of connection and I want to get it
done correctly the first time so i won't be cut
off after switching ISP's.

Thankx

[newbie] NTFS in Linux

2000-02-16 Thread Brent Timmer

Anybody know if there is a way to see my ntfs partitions in linux?

Re: [newbie] CD-rom

2000-02-16 Thread Brent Timmer

Here's a message I got from someone
else.

First become root and edit the /etc/lilo.conf and
add append="hdd=ide-scsi" to it. Here is mine:

/etc/lilo.config

boot=/dev/hda6map=/boot/mapinstall=/boot/boot.bprompttimeout=50append="hdd=ide-scsi"image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.2.9-19mdksmp label=linux root=/dev/hda11 initrd=/boot/initrd-2.2.9-19mdksmp.img read-onlyimage=/boot/vmlinuz-2.2.9-19mdk label=linux-up root=/dev/hda11 initrd=/boot/initrd-2.2.9-19mdk.img read-onlyother=/dev/hda1 label=dos table=/dev/hda

You then need to run lilo to update the boot files:

lilo

Then, add the following lines at the end of your
/etc/rc.d/rc.local:

/etc/rc.d/rc.local

  /sbin/modprobe
ide-scsi  /sbin/modprobe sg

This will configure your CD-RW to emulate a SCSI
device.

optional

I had an error message about block-major-11 so I
added this change:

/etc/config.modulesalias scsi_hostadapter0
ide-scsialias scsi_hostadapter1 advansysalias parport_lowlevel
parport_pcpre-install pcmcia_core /etc/rc.d/init.d/pcmcia startalias
sound es1370alias block-major-11 ide-scsi

Note that I have a real SCSI card installed for a
Jaz drive and I had to change the alias for the Advansys SCSI card and add one
for the IDE.

The last step is to link /dev/cdrom to your CD-RW.
Only do this if you want your CD-R to be your CD-ROM device and it isn't
currently your CD-ROM device.

 ln -s /dev/scd0 /dev/cdrom

Reboot!

To make sure everything works. As root type:

 cdrecord -scanbus

My results were: Cdrecord release 1.8a22
Copyright (C) 1995-1999 Jörg Schillingscsibus0:    0)
*    1) *    2) *    3)

  I'm unable to use
either of my CD drives ( one is a CD burner) in Mandrake 7.0
  they are both Atapi/IDE drives.
I' ve read posts and articles about
recompiling the kernel  to change the IDE to scsi . that doesn't seem to
work because I really don't have any idea what I'm doing.

Anyway my question is can I reinstall Mandrake

You can probably pull 'em off the mandrake ftp site and install 'em

I think it is because it is a FAT partition, permissions do not work.
Instead , you have to edit /etc/fstab and specify the general
permissions.

Don't knowt the details, try man mount for info.

You don't have a directory /proc ?

If not, try

dmesg > ~/startlog
vi ~/statrlog (use your fav editor instead of vi if you like)

Does it list the IRQ settings in there?

In case you are wondering, dmesg allows you to view all of the messages
produced during IPL (boot-time). It's the stuff that flies up your screen
as Linux is starting up. All you've done is redirect the output of it to a
file in your home directory and then view it. I /think/ IRQ settings are
displayed at boot time, but I'm not 100% sure.

Did you type 'cat /proc/interrupts' or 'cat proc/interrupts'?

This is a common mistake for people new to unix. The first will look in
the 'proc' directory located in the root dir while the second will try to
find a 'proc' directory in the current directory and result in a "no such
dir/file" error.

Other people have ROOT access to your machine? Then it could be
just anything.

You can try checking the consistency of your rpm-packages
with "rpm -Va" (see the rpm man page), or you could try "updating" your
distribution with the same CD you previously used for instaling it...

But, basically if someone else has a root access you will see similar

I'd never considered that root user would have a diferent nice level to
normal users. I've no idea why as the OS I used to use (VME) has a special
ID you can login to when the machine is so heavily stuffed that normal
users are hanging. Effectively running right up there with the kernel.

Saying that, if the suid bit is set and the process picks up the
permissions of root, will it not also pick up the niceness of root also?

RE: [newbie] unsubscribe newbie.

2000-02-16 Thread steve . flynn

If the list server is not honouring unsubscribe commands, then we need to
inform mandrake and get them to check out the logs.

You are sending the email to unsubscribe from the same address you
subscribed to are you!

Failing that, go to

http://www.linux-mandrake.com/en/flists.php3

and unsubscribe from there. Although I find it hard to believe that the
server is not honouring unsub commands, it's not beyond the realms of
possibility.

Let me know what you think. Actually the only "user input" required is to

Perhaps linux-mandrake could create an "[EMAIL PROTECTED]"

"[EMAIL PROTECTED]" , might be as bad as one of those DOS
attacks that are becoming so popular these days though for hotmail as I
doubt that their servers could take the load :-(

Jeez I should stop taking those sarcasm pills

[newbie] Printing to NT

2000-02-16 Thread Ron Warren

I installed Mandrake 7.0 and want to print to my
HPLaserJet 5P on my WinNT 4.0 server. Samba was already installed by Mandrake
7.0. I also enabled TCP/IP printing on the WinNT server. I can ping the WinNt
server so TCP/IP is working. I tried to install the network SMB WinNT printer
during setup but it didn't work.

Thanks,

Whilst I agree that people's inabitity to "unsubscribe" can be frustrating I
fail to see the need for the 'f' word in group email. By all means tell the

[newbie] Permissions to /mnt

2000-02-16 Thread steve . flynn

Someone else on the list is attempting to dothe same thing as myself.

Basically, root has the ability to write files back to my DOS partitions,
whereas 'steve', my normal user does not.

This is very incovenient as it means I have to run my distributed.net
client under root to allow it to write back to the buff-out file (located
in /mnt/D/Utilities/distributed.net/).

I'd like to do two things:

Give 'steve' permission to write to this drectory. My attempts at chmod'ing
permisions to rwxrwxrwx as root have failed - no change in permissions.

Run dnetc (the distributed.net client) from the user 'steve' and have it
run with root permisssions. I've chown'd it to root, I've performed a
'chmod +s dnetc' and I've changed the owner of the directory it live in to
root. No joy - it still runs with 'steve' permissions. The only way I can
get it to run with root's permissions is to su to root and then fire it up.

I'm missing something obvious out, and I can't for the life of me, see it!

Re: [newbie] Can anyone recommend a good email program?

2000-02-16 Thread steve . flynn

Eh! Nah! Lovely programs.

Actually, I say this never having used ELM or PINE on my installation. I've
used them both before under other flavours but never under Mandrake. Saying
that,
I used to use ELM as my email package on my Amiga 3000 alongside TIN for
news. Being connected via a modem in the UK meant I was offline 99 percent
of the time. I found them to both work beautifully. I fact, I used to use
TIN to gate newsgroups from Usenet across in Fidonet. Worked beautifully.

Not the most friendly of packages, I'll freely admit, nor are either of
them 'pretty' (well, they weren't when I was using them about 3 years ago!)

I do appreciate the nicities of a GIU interface though - using Win98 for
the last two years as made me lazy.

"What? You mean I can't just click on install? I have to compile it first
and then install it by hand? modprobe? WTF is that? Why doesn't it just
work" :)

Re: [newbie] Unsubscribe

2000-02-16 Thread steve . flynn

NO!

Dammit!

Address the message to [EMAIL PROTECTED] This means put
'[EMAIL PROTECTED]' in the space marked 'address'

It's usually the first box at the top of the screen. Might be called TO: or
something similar.

No click in the bit where it says 'SUBJECT'.

Type UNSUBSCRIBE NEWBIE

For Christ's sake Joe, it's not difficult. If you screw this up, you're
never, ever going to keep a Linux box working. As for recompiling a
kernel

Sigh..

Seriously, this is a great list - very helpful. I've only been subscribed
for a few days and was suprised at the signal to noise ratio. However, and
it seems to be the same on many lists, many people throw away the
introdutory message they get when the subscribe. I don't know if the
problem of unsub requests to the list has gotten worse then usual recently,
but I've been mailing people privately for the last two days sending them
the unsub reqs. We'll see if it dies down.

The one thing I can't understad is that this is a really easy list to get
on - you go to the mandrake webpage and fill in an online form, click
subscribe and that's it. Now, if people can find the subscribe button
easily enough why can't they find the unsubscribe button right beside it!

Sheesh! :)

I fell better after my rant though - it's getting funny now! :)

Now, if I could persuade my usual login id to have write access my mounted
DOS partitions like the other guy on the list trying to do the same
thing

Actually, I'll go and post a question on my predicament.

LOL!

I don't mean to belittle anyone but this is getting very dumb!

How hard is it to follow simple instructions???

Re: [newbie] random 'find' process

2000-02-16 Thread steve . flynn

The cron daemon.

man cron
man at
man atq
man anacron

Have a look at your crontab file - it controls what starts up, how often
and at what time. It's a scheduler running constantly. In your case, it may
have been cleaning your /tmp directry, rebuilding your RPM database or
several other things.

For example, ever month, on the 1st day, at 0300 hours, my machine goes
through the entire machine, moving any files which end in ~ (normally
backup files from kedit) into a backup directory. On the 14th of the month,
it empies this backup directory. Cron controls the running of these
scripts. It's really very useful

Subject: [newbie] random 'find' process

I have noticed that my computer will often go into periods of furious disk
access at very odd hours so, last time it happened, I decided to take a
look and see what was going on (I also wanted to get to sleep).
My search turned up a find process running as root for no apparent reason
at all so I proceeded to shut down all applications that were running and
kill it, after which the disk activity stopped. Any idea what may have
spawned the find process?
I was running, as far as I can remember, the following:

-Netscape
-a couple Konsoles
-LICQ
-Grip (the cd player)
-xmms

None of them should've been doing anything special (i.e. downloading,
playing music, etc.)

I used to HATE that.
Here's what I did:
I don't let kmail check for my mail. I use kbiff.
It does the checking. You can set it NOT to give you any visual notices (that
little box is as annoying as kmail's), but to play a sound (I use the gong
from StarOffice). When I hear the gong, I click on the little applet on the
panel that kbiff sets up and it automagically launches or wakes kmail to
download the mail. It's great!! It never gets in the way, just conveniently
tells me when mail arrives on my server and lets me decide when to use kmail
to actually fetch it. Give it a try.
HTH,
Mike
